The reason why I'm being so persistent with this is because when I started voicing concerns to my "friends" about my alcohol consumption (when I still had something of a handle on it), they said "nah, you're fine." They just wanted someone to party with, they didn't want to deal with my concerns.

I had the opposite situation several times. Conversations that involved fair quantities of alcohol derailed gradually, and afterwards I realized everyone's attitude had shifted in a more aggressive direction, including my own. So this wouldn't be a useful strategy for myself 😊.

For profit companies who have built walled gardens and wish to stay that way (reddit, tumblr, meta, linkedin, etc.) are at ethical odds with the ActivityPub world, insofar as people are trying vehemently to get away from these companies. But you'll notice for profit companies who are within the ideals of Fedipeople (for example Nitro, or Tuta, or Proton, or Mullvad) do not get griefed due to alignment of values and morals of the communities in question.
But the pitch wasn't "everything will be interoperable unless the company doesn't mean it or wants to make money or we aren't "morally aligned", whatever that means".
I don't understand how you can be a "walled garden" and still feature interoperability with a set of open source platforms under a pre-established set protocol. This is not an ethical problem or a problem of ideology, those two things are mutually exclusive.

With "Beginners Guide to Linux" in the title, I don't think the video is suitable for anyone who hasn't already tried Linux.
There's not even a mention of what a "distro" is, and if I had never used Linux before and watched this video, I'd run away as fast as I could. It's way too complex, and mentions way too many things that I've probably never heard of before.
That being said, I don't know who his demographic is. I'm always glad to see some effort into helping people discover Linux, but I fear this might have the opposite effect.

This PC is basically my life, I use it for work (freelance business), entertainment, and to self host a server so I'm hesitant. I have a handful of questions for now while I look into it more:

My personal experience says: try dualbooting first, because it will make you to have a working machine continuously. Taking into account that all Linux-based OS behave vastly differently from MS Windows, it is possible to break things, when learning a new way of doing things.

I've been using an external NTFS drive for compatibility and big files storage: works as charm. The worst case scenario is you will need to install an ntfs-3g driver, although it is usually included with the distro.
As for production: I don't have much experience with that, although I can recommend you looking around tooling that solves the problem. You will need quite a bit of patience and trying things, because switching platform will definitely require you to make some shifts in usual processes you have now. Don't expect things to be obvious 100% replacement: unfortunately lots of people have this expectation, and get frustrated.
As for hardware, just looking the model up on the internet with adding "linux", or "ubuntu", or "fedora" should do the trick of figuring out if it will work.
2) I use Audacity because it's super simple and has a familiar interface. Ardour is a DAW with way more features and mixing available, but a lot of people just use ONE as well for the "one and done" method. VSTs are going to be hit or miss depending on what they do and how they were written (many are windows-specific), but there are other things available for replacement if needed. Link.
3) NTFS is fine to read from on Linux, but I wouldn't suggest read/write because NTFS will 100% corrupt itself over time. Stick to either read-only from NTFS and save elsewhere, or copy them to a new destination and work from there.
4) There's a lot of info on these on Linux. Sounds like support for the Scarlett hit with kernel 6.8, so you'll be fine there. The Behringer EV1 should be standalone hardware, meaning it does it's work with the PC.
You can just run a LiveUSB of Fedora or whatever and try all this stuff out to be sure with no commitment. You could also get a second drive cheap and make this easier to test out fully if you really want and make the switch from dual booting a lot safer.
Either way, you have easy options to test all this out before even installing.

Yeah, download the ISO, use a media writer to put it on any kind of removable media, plug it in, reboot, and you'll have a fully functional desktop in a few minutes are running in memory. This is the way it should be tested, and it gives you the option to test as many as you want to find the one that fits for you.
The only caveat is that it's running completely in-memory as I said, so if you plan on testing out installing software to test, keep in mind your usual amount of RAM available will be slightly reduced.
If everything looks great, then you'll have the ability to install directly, without harming your Windows partition. PLEASE BACK YOUR STUFF UP ANYWAY.
Yes, what you suggest is possible, but just be careful to backup your data. Burn the Gparted ISO onto a USB and then boot from it. You will then be able to use this tool to delete the Win partition and resize the Linux one. For complete peace of mind in case something goes wrong, I suggest using CloneZilla to create an image of the drive for backup purposes before messing around with the partition. Of course, you will then need a spare internal or external drive of the same size, or larger, onto which you will save the image... Grub will easily cope when the Windows partition is removed, but I also suggest installing Refind, which provides a nice interface at boot-time to choose which system to use and also recognizes any changes when partitions are added or removed. You should find the package in the repositories of most distros.

Linux can handle NTFS. On my Linux server I used Samba to share files on NTFS drives over the network because those drives were removed from my Windows PC at the time . Most Linux distros will handle Samba shares through the CIFS-utils package. I read that there is no great performance loss between sharing Linux's EXT file system over a NFS network share from a Linux box , and NTFS over a Samba network share from a Linux box, but there is one potential issue as I see it: Linux distros do not have the tools to check NTFS drives for errors. Therefore, if a powercut was to happen, then you may then have to remove the NTFS drives from your Linux machine and go find a Windows machine to check the disks and correct any errors. I coped with this for a few years before deciding to create new EXT4 partitions and copy the data across from the NTFS partitions. I recommend that you employ a similar migration strategy.

Dual boot should be ok. If and when you decide to fully switch, I'd say it's better to do a reinstall. Messing with partitions always comes with disclaimers. A bit advanced topic if you are interested: when you resize partition usually data needs to be moved, depending what you do with it, so it will wear your ssd; also you should be aware that you must install windows first, Linux second because windows doesn't really play well with others and be sure NOT to format EFI partition when installing Linux.
You have alternatives to dual boot: VMs. Run Linux on bare metal, then boot up a VM if you need something only windows can provide. Gnome has a new VM tool incoming.
No idea for audio, but Photoshop has alternative, gimp. Wether you like it or not, it's another story (people I know really really hate that one). For digital art there is a tool called Krita that runs on kde. People really enjoy using it.
NTFS has one thing that Linux doesn't really like - it is case insensitive. Linux normally works with case sensitive filesystems. There was recently a rant by the Linux overlord about case insensitive filesystems, so you might want to stay clear of it. It's ok to use it on a thumb drive though.
There is software for all your uses on linux, but I would start by using those apps on your current setup to get used to the workflow.
Changing from windows to linux can be really tough but it can be made a lot easier if you are already using programs that work on linux before you switch.
Since OP uses it for freelance business, self-hosting and stuff, I recommend even one step further, by a new computer and try to replicate all workflows there. Don't fuck with the old one until one day OP suddenly noticed that he hasn't booted his old computer for one year, then he can sell it as parts.
That's the problem, I'm freelance and barely scraping by haha. I'd love to grab something to try out but it ain't gonna happen right now. My laptop is a Samsung galaxy book3 ultra which I slapped Mint on a while back and had issues and went back with a cracked windows 11. Apparently linux and the galaxy book line don't play well. But, I'm very tempted to try another distro on it first, like bazzite. Probably be the smart thing before touching my main PC.
That's a rather expensive laptop you got there... I personally bought a used Thinkpad x280 for $160, and I run Linux on there. Another option is to get an small computer (sbc) with at least 8 gb of ram, if you already have a monitor.
Definitely dual boot, especially if you're new to linux, and double-especially if this is what you use for work. You are likely to run into situations where shit just doesn't work and you need a fallback environment to operate in while you figure out what that's about and how to fix it. Likewise, you will run into software that runs badly on linux or just doesn't run at all even under wine/VM, and it will be nice to have that fallback for when you don't have time to fuck around and figure out what the problem is and need to just get shit done. If things go well you will find very quickly that you don't need it and can probably go ahead and delete it after a little bit, but at first you want that lifeboat. Mine stuck around for 2 weeks, but I only even used it the first couple days and the rest was 'maybe I'll run into some weird situation...' and just not needing it. As for merging the partitions and such, I believe that's possible, but you definitely want to make sure you have backups before you try it just in case. There are many good cloud backup services that have linux native clients (I use filen.io myself.)
I've never even touched music software so I have no idea what's out there. I do however know about a great website called alternativeto.net that lets you find alternatives to existing software, and you can select your platform to limit it only to linux software. For example, here's the entry for linux-native replacements for Cubase (it was the obscure one from my perspective, wanted to see if they actually had anything, turns out they do.)
Yes, NTFS generally works mostly fine on linux, though there are a couple of weird cases where it causes problems (one I ran into was adding games I had installed on an NTFS drive for windows to Steam on linux, it was very wonky.) After nuking my windows boot drive I went through and copied all the stuff off my NTFS drives and reformatted them to btrfs before putting the data back on them to ensure that everything would work smoothly, but if you're just using it for regular file access you should be fine. The one caveat I would add is I would probably not recommend editing large projects in files on NTFS drives in linux if you can avoid it, but poke around google and see if you can find people reporting issues with your specific software/use-case to see if there are any problems with it.
Drivers for weird hardware are potentially an issue. Looks like there is a FOSS driver for the Scarlett, didn't see anything at first glance for the Behringer, but also again I have no idea what I'm looking at here so this is something you're going to have to do some research on. I have had some weirdness with audio in general on linux, things cutting out unexpectedly, stuff like that, but that's strictly games/discord/that sort of thing, so it might be worth looking for stuff other people have posted about doing heavy audio work on linux to get an idea for what to expect. I'm sure it can be made to work, but it might require more fiddling than you expect.
If you’re into music creation, chances are you’ve heard of Focusrite Scarletts—they’re practically a staple in the industry. But here’s the kicker: while they’re adored by many, official support from Focusrite is limited to Windows and Mac users.
Actually the safest thing is probably to choose a main system and run the other in a VM like with VirtualBox. For you, you could just install VirtualBox on Windows then Linux inside of a VirtualBox VM. Windows does have a builtin Virtualization solution too you may be able to use, but I have personally never done that. Keep in mind too that VMs are not as performant as bare metal. For video probably NO, for images fine, for audio maybe but you'll have to see if you get the real-time timing you need in a VM. Good way to play in any case. 2nd best if you have a workstation, not a laptop, you could put in a hot mount SATA drive enclosure, and just swap in the drive you want and get full bear metal performance. Dual boot takes some tech skill. Be sure to back everything up if you do that. Should do that anyway before fiddling. Also if you use bitlocker and secure boot make sure you have all your recovery keys and know how to work with your bios settings too.
Maybe I am missing something, not sure why you care about NTFS. If this is a separate computer you don't really care about that, just the sharing protocol (SMB for example). If it is on the main box, then you'd probably convert this to Ext4 or something similar. No reason to stick with NTFS with Linux. There are a lot of great FS options on linux plus BTRFS, LVM, or RAID to if you want redundancy.
Regarding apps. The alternativeto site is great. Linux has a bunch of audio and photo software. If your a pro, you may not find any of it sufficient. Especially a lot of people cannot do without Photoshop. The common quoted photo programs are GIMP and Darktable. There are many other photo and image programs. Common audio program is Audacity. Again, there are many others. Looks like some handle vst but I have no personal experience.
There is no shame in dual booting. That will give you the freedom to find alternatives for everything in your workflow until you stop needing to boot into Windows at all. The preferred way is with a separate physical drive, because windows updates will sometimes overwrite the ESP partition or do other weird things which could break your Linux install.

Linux has no trouble reading NTFS. I have an NTFS network drive, and on my dual boot laptop I can simply reach into the NTFS partition on my second drive and grab files from it from Linux (Windows cannot read the Linux drive, though).
Not sure on those specific models, but I have a Behringer UM2 and Linux detects and works with it just fine.
"This PC is basically my life" screams leave well enough alone. I wouldn't even set up a dual boot on a machine I depended on to make my living. If you do, make sure you've got everything backed up before you start. Nothing should go wrong, but that's a very different statement than nothing will go wrong.
If you want to start using linux I'd recommend you buy a cheap second computer and start there. You can safely experiment as much as you like without risking your professional set up.
It is an option to play around. But for audio production you really don't want to be trying to use a VM unless you're fiddling with USB passthrough (which is a pain). Audio latency on Windows is bad enough, adding Linux's on top is awful.
Dual booting on separate drives is safe, especially if you unplug the windows drive while installing Linux so you can't accidentally mix them up. Just don't mess with the windows drive from Linux. It's probably encrypted if you're running windows 11 anyways.
I can confirm focusrite scarlet interfaces work fine, and the uv1 should be fine as well but I don't have one. You may need to get familiar with the Linux audio landscape. VSTs mostly work these days, although I only use foss VSTs so maybe commercial ones have their own caveats.
For pro audio you should be using JACK to connect your sound devices. These days if you run a system that uses pipewire, pipewire can pretend to be a JACK server just fine. I like to use QJackCtl to set up Jack environments, although its not necessary because many DAWs are capable of setting up in the application.
For a DAW I used to love Ardour, now I still like it but am sad that it has been crashing often for me. I don't use any of them but there are some well liked Linux daws like reaper.
You may have trouble with recording without a preemptable (aka real-time) kernel. Afaict this only matters on lower end computers or when you have a lot of live plugins running, but using a kernel with this feature just means that more kernel code can be interrupted to handle things like fresh audio data arriving over USB.
Mostly, you'll need some time to get everything working how you want. I agree with the recommendation to use a separate disk in your existing computer for Linux, or get a whole separate computer. The nice thing about using a separate disk is you can know for sure your windows setup is available if needed. For me I slowly left windows behind, only realizing later that it has been a year or more since I last fired it up.
Ok so I'll just focus on dual booting since there are other thorough replys here.
I really recommend that you DO dual boot but only in a specific way.
When people say "Dual Boot", this can mean two very different things.
A common way to dual boot is to have windows and Linux exist on the same drive by partitioning the drive and installing a boot manager. I strongly advise against this. It's not worth the risk and pain.
Just install linux on a totally new drive and select it as the boot drive from bios. Leave you windows drive untouched.
Linux is much better than it ever has been. There is a very good chance it can do everything you want. But, especially as someone running a business, there will be times when you just need to get something done and will want to fall back to what you know. These times often lead to people giving up and rolling back to windows in a panic.
Just leave yourself a way to instantly and effortlessly fall back into windows as needed and eventually you will end up doing that less and less. Until you don't do it at all and the windows drive gets wiped for more Linux storage.
I was going to suggest something similar. Basically, unplug the windows drive entirely, install linux on a dedicated drive. Then plug them both in and use the bios to decide which one to use. Basically don't have them interact at all. That way, worst comes to worst, you can boot into windows exactly as it is.
If this was a personal machine you use for recreation, I would fully support just dropping windows entirely. But no matter how much I want to support a fellow Linux convert, if you make your livelihood from this computer, I wouldn't risk any downtime that costs you money.
Audition, Photoshop and Cubase you’ll probably have the hardest time to truly replace. Even more if you rely on third party plugins for either of those.
I'm an ex-Windows user and have been using Linux for about 7-ish years now.
If you can handle some downtime, the possibility of some plugins breaking and some time getting used to your new system, you can give it a shot. Otherwise, what I'd more or less recommend is getting a spare computer and just trying Linux out on that. That way you can keep your work computer for critical work while you mess around on the spare.
I checked Cubase on WineHQ, and sadly it won't run via WINE from what I see, so you will either have to look for a different DAW (which will require extra time re-learning everything) or just going with a spare).
If you do plan on biting the bullet and going full Linux on your work machine, here's a couple observations:
The only Windows DAW i've tried on Linux is FL Studio running through WINE. I do have REAPER for aligning audio tracks (it's very good at that) but I haven't really used that enough to become proficient with it. There's also Bitwig, which I haven't used (I checked the price on that when i was kinda on the fence about getting it and oh boy is it expensive! around $800 with the annual upgrade or smth lol).
From my experience, VSTs via WINE (in my case, running through FL Studio 24.2.1), is quite good, although there are is a good bit of jank that comes with it (a few 32-bit VSTs don't work, it's a bit of a gamble honestly) and there are bound to be a couple potential breakages with WINE updates (like what happened today as I'm writing this, I updated WINE and idk if it's just a residual thing but the GUIs on GVST plugins don't render anymore, I can still access the parameters via hovering and looking at the hints panel in FL Studio, but it is a bit cumbersome trying to operate VSTs blindly, especially when they contain things such as waveforms/levels).
Other than that FL Studio's been running like a charm, very very close to (if not native), except for stuff like the Diagnostic thingy not working at all (told you there's jank).
As for replacements, you will need to learn new programs, one which may not contain all the features that you would want (muscle memory can also be a bit of a pain). I'd start out with maybe trying out Audacity and GiMP/Krita on Windows and try learning and getting used to the workflow of each on your existing Windows installation before swapping over. I was using FOSS programs like GiMP/Audacity beforehand so the transition was easy once I swapped over. FL in WINE back then was a little more finnicky but most of it still worked so it kept me going.
If you're still thinking about wiping Windows off of there and going full Linux, good luck, my friend.

This is especially regarding some of your other details. You are not in for a quick and smooth transition (sorry to say).
VSTs are "sort of" supported on Linux. Basically they're not and there are work arounds that I haven't done using wine for compatibility.
I run a virtual machine for the windows software I am reliant on. So basically my Photoshop etc I use Affinity in a windows VM and it works fine. Depending if you get intensive with your work you might need a lot of resources or experience lag. But for the most part it should be fine. Look into virt-manager for your VM if you want to go that route.
Besides the VST issue, audio recording will probably give you additiinal problems. I haven't delved into it because he rabbit hole went too deep for me, but from what I've read there tends to be issues with audio in VMs (tremendous lag for one).
But all that being said, there should be a solution for all of your needs. It probably won't be straight forward though given your use cases. I don't want to sound negative with my warnings, I just want to make sure you don't shoot yourself in the foot with your work.
2: I'm a Bitwig fan-boy. Buy this great piece of software, have tons of fun and never use third party VSTs again. Sound design, modulate everything, wow! You can run many Windows VSTs using yabridge. Reaper might be a good choice for a DAW as well, it's a little more classic and has plugins and scripts for everything.

Just keep in mind, in such a case, that your performance will be quite reduced due to limits on I/O. When you have Linux on a real drive - especially a striped RAID, the system is blazing fast. It’s a substantial difference you should keep in mind when evaluating.
You could acquire a pretty cheap PC for Linux it runs on a potato. Try an electrical scrap heap nearby that you can fossick from or a friend with an old, unused system in storage (even a cheap $20 retro PC from your local marketplace?) to acquire an old retro system. You might not even need a new screen depending what connections your existing screens/TV has and if you could use a cheap adapter and cable from the thrift store.
Linux runs on basically any retro PC and laptop excluding some annoying wifi chips that need planning before the install if you don't have ethernet. Some really old tech may also require specific distributions that still offer support too.
Machines with a 32bit CPU you will want to confirm beforehand if your chosen distribution still offers a supported 32bit install image and retro PC's with obscure expansion cards that perhaps were never supported. This is likely moving into vintage collectors territory though and you would have to be pretty lucky now to find a machine like that super cheap and working.

Andererseits kommen die Plattformen auch schnell an ihre Grenzen, weil nicht ein paar dutzend, sondern Millionen Menschen kontrolliert werden müssen, immer wieder neue Wege zum Umgehen der Zensur gefunden werden, und nicht zuletzt die Zensur stärker auffällt, als bei klassischen Medien, wo diese für Uninformierte unsichtbar bleibt.
Die Linke hat z.B. im letzten Wahlkampf durch gute Social Media Arbeit ihre Themen deutlich besser platzieren können, als es ihr ARD, ZDF & co. jemals gestattet hätten.
Das Problem damit ist, dass man bei sozialen Medien einfach Reichweite kaufen kann. Außerdem haben die Plattformen als Unternehmen ja selbst ein enormes Interesse daran, linkes Gedankengut zu unterdrücken. Klar kann es in Einzelfällen schon mal zugunsten linker Organisationen ausgehen, aber die Politik wird in den meisten westlichen Ländern trotzdem von rechten Parteien dominiert.

“no features in RCs” is a very basic rule, this was a forgone conclusion. If these features were so integral to data integrity, he should have kept bcachefs out of the kernel until they were ready.
There is in this case, and why Linus did accept the patch in the end. Previous cases less so though which is why Linus is so pissed at this one.
The reason for this new feature is to help fix data loss on users systems - which is a fine line between a bug and a new feature really. There is precedent for this type on thing in RC releases from other filesystems as well. So the issue in this instance is a lot less black and white.

My uneducated kernel take. Flexibility is acceptable and desirable in small projects or low impact projects.

Reading all the comments (between Kent and Linux), the problem is that the bcachefs dev thinks that his project (the filesystem) is the critically important one and that the Linux kernel needs to bend to his will.
I am a bcachefs user but it is pretty damn obvious to me that the production Linux kernel is more important than an experimental filesystem.
He posted on Patreon that there'll be a DKMS module. In my opinion, this should have been the option from the very beginning and upstreaming at a later point in time. It would have avoided a lot of drama. And now bcachefs is kind of tainted. The only way I ever see it back in mainline is there is an independent downstream of Kent's kernel that has no connection to him whatsoever.
Shame because I had very good experience with the filesystem. Definitely better than when btrfs was new. But Linus is unfortunately right; Kent is unable to follow agreed collaboration rules.
Unfortunate situation that could have been avoided entirely. Though I don't want to be too harsh on Kent. He spent a lot of time and work on bcachefs and it's his most important project. As such, he's more passionate about all of this. But the same can be said for Linus and the kernel on the other side.
It's an interesting filesystem, but you shouldn't use it at this point unless you know what the hell you're doing. You'll need to be able to notice, report and help resolve bugs, and under no circumstances use it for production or where you can't afford to lose some or all of the data on the partition.

Filesystems are incredibly antiquated, and while I don't agree with Kent's attitude, it is very important in the long run that filesystems catch back up.
As it stands just about any enterprise system you can poke a stick at is rolling their own customised file storage system, with a traditional filesystem typically being a misshapen dead weight sitting somewhere in the middle of it - existing because it's the only thing the kernel can integrate with.
It is pretty important that this trend reverses, and bcachefs was a big step in the right direction. Unfortunate that Kent is the way he is.
I'm really glad Torvalds is the kind of person to flip articles like this off and carry on with his day and just not be affected by it at all. When the time comes, I hope whoever carries the torch is just as well.

It is great. I actually was a heavy critic of pulseaudio and stuck with ALSA on my desktop for as long as I could (until last year) by using Gentoo with USE="alsa -pulseaudio", the X-Fi's hardware mixing and automatic S/PDIF passthrough.
I tried to switch to pulseaudio a couple of times whenever I read one of those "it's good now, trust me bro" articles, but it wasn't, ever. It had and still has a huge amount of hard-coded, opinionated, often perplexing, behavioral quirks that made it feel like it just fought me every step of the way.
Pipewire on the other hand does not only have saner defaults, almost everything is softcoded with a great Lua plugin API. Don't like a default routing choice or want to automate your own, Wireplumber got you covered. Last year my X-Fi failed (or rather got flakey) and I had to choose between buying another used one or moving to PW. Almost everything worked out of the box on PW the way I like it, except a few details which were almost all covered by the settings. For the last problem, encoded streams not clearing the output, I wrote my own routing plugin.
The documentation for that API isn't necessarily the best, but it's easy to start from something small and work your way to understanding how to get the result you want.
If it's a pure DAC, it's default output will likely be between 1 to 2 Volts RMS. If your listening on iems or ~30 Ohm headphones that is gonna be crazy loud. It seems like you are using digital audio control to manage this (i.e., the audio level in your DE), which is possible, but certainly not ideal. It also is kinda bad for the audio quality, as you are digitally remixing it, and if you ever switch to high impedance headphones (or already have), the output current will be sub-ideal.
If I'm assessing your situation correctly, then this is quite easy to solve though. You just need a preamp! This will give a nice knob to control audio with much more precision and finesse. I know that both JDS Labs and Schiit Audio offer headphone amps with built in preamps in the USA. I can highly recommend the JDS Labs Atom Amp 2. In Europe your a little more limited, but FiiO has some nice options I think.
Of course none of this is necessary if you don't want audiophile levels of quality, but it would boost the audio quality (presuming your DAC doesn't have a proper preamp), and would certainly give you a tactile, wonderful knob.
I can certainly attest that my HD600s sound quite a bit better out of a JDS Labs Atom Amp 2 than out of just my DAC or—god forbid—my Mobo audio... They sound even better out of my vintage 100W Onkyo amp, of course, but really not by much. I am really impressed by the Atom Amp. I initially just bought it for travelling, but it has now basically become my main amp lol.

I love what Valve is doing for Linux, but longer term, the onus is on them to solve the 32-bit compatibility layer issue (a-la Proton for win-to-linux, as well as their upcoming x86-to-ARM layer).
Expecting all distros (who again, are staffed mostly by volunteers) to do this work separately (i.e. duplicating all that work), for all time, is a big ask.

No. Valve (the biggest offender) will have to make native 64-bit Steam before then, as will the remaining holdouts, so Linux distros will be able to remove 32-bit packages in a timely manner.
Removing then now will break too much to be worth doing.
I mean, I have more than one machine. Some can be closer to guinea pigs than others. In this case, it's a laptop that I don't keep anything unbacked-up on. Had Fedora on it for about 6 months and I cannot remember an update breaking anything for me so far. The previous machine I had it on was used less but I had the same experience. If you're mainly just web browsing on a machine, bleeding edge is good imo
32bit does need to go but we're at a time where a lot of people are switching their main PCs or gaming PCs over to Fedora to get ahead of Windows 10 EoS. The timing in this change couldn't be worse (even if it's two versions ahead.)
It's bad PR to break Steam and gaming at this time. Valve needs to sort this out on their end but the Fedora Project needs to check in with their users to see what they're using on Fedora.

It is 32bit and depends on a runtime from a really old version of Ubuntu. It is also proprietary but that is a different issue.
It would be nice if Value worked with the Fedora project to build something open and modern so that devs could easily package games for Linux. The problem is that Value wants everyone to go though Steam as Steam is where they actually make money. People like to see Value as the good guy but it isn't all sunshine and rainbows. I can't really blame them in the end but it is important to realize they have a interest that may not always align with the community.

There are and will always be distros optimized for running on everything. Fedora is a "move fast" distro, it's hard to move fast with a lot of baggage.
I think the last time I had a 32 bit CPU was around 2005 but I could be remembering that incorrectly. Supporting 20 year old hardware isn't always easy.
It isn't easy, but this isn't about the hardware. It's about the software packages. Tons of software meant to run on 32-bit hasn't been updated to run on 64-bit natively. Thus the burden of keeping a lot of packages that serve as backwards compatibility.

32bit only Linux apps are basically non-existent, anything with the source available and maintainers would have been ported at some point in the last 2 decades, otherwise they have very specific technical reasons for being 32bit only (like OBS iiuc), the source has been lost somehow, or it's a proprietary program where the company has no interest (e.g. Valve with Steam)
In the Fedora 31 release, the 32-bit i686 kernel and boot media are no more. Read more about the background on this change, and what to do about it, here.
To be a little more precise, Linux is still available for 32-bit x86, just not from the Fedora distro. The Linux project is just now dropping support for 486 CPUs, because the maintenance burden for a virtually unused system type is too high for the mainline. That still leaves 32-bit Pentiums and newer though.
Being able to run on everything is nice, but what you're actually asking for here is for a highly skilled (and rare) distro maintainer to dedicate substantial amounts of time to maintaining and testing thousands of packages on 32 bit systems in case someone wants to use it. It's not just like users get to click a button and voila, they can run more games than before.
If you really need to use 32 bit software, eventually you'll just have to manage it yourself because no one else is able to do it for you. That capability will almost never go away.
I don't think Apple is concerned with making every app and game work on their systems to the same degree as a Linux distro. They have a niche they seem satisfied with and that niche isn't really Steam games.
With that being said, Valve made a 64 bit client for Mac so whichever major distro is first will probably push Valve to finally make a 64 bit version for Linux.
That's a very different kind of thing. The apple ecosystem is tiny. They themselves make every single device supported by the OS. They make the only variant of the OS. They have the power to change whatever they want and everyone who wants any access to apps (or users) needs to follow apple's guidelines. They also have something close to a monopoly in certain professional use cases. So they can push whatever they want and everyone has to suck it up.
Compare that to Fedora. Fedora is just one distro in a sea of different Linux distros. They aren't even the biggest one, not by a longshot. So if they drop 32bit, that won't force Valve to move Steam to 64bit and it certainly won't push game developers to update old, unsupported games that were never meant to run on Linux at all to change anything.

There is xclicker which is a flatpak app, but it only automate mouse clicks, but there is nothing for key presses, I am surprised I could not find anything on this, but is there any GUI for this? Also is this possible on a technical level (in flatpak especially, I dont know if apps can simulate key presses). I know of ydotool, but that uses root, also its not a gui

Dunno if it would meet your needs, but I've been using Input Remapper for binding macros to various key presses and mouse buttons under Wayland. It does prompt for root access, but it's a GUI. It supports any input method, as far as I can tell. It even supports my tablet.
I use it to bind stuff like hold(key(BTN_LEFT).wait(100)) to some button to repeatedly left click while I'm holding that button down.

I don't like this example, because it ignores that normal people take planes, too - sure it's less frequent, and it's usually public transport-style as opposed to just being one billionaire and their entourage per plane, but there's also just a lot more normal people than billionaires. Not to say that the pollution made for billionaires' personal lifestyles isn't massive or that rich people's economic and political activities aren't the main driver of climate change, but using such an obviously bad example makes it too easy to dismiss the general sentiment of the joke. If every non-billionaire stopped taking plane rides, it would make a difference for climate change - the issue is that rich people do their hardest to make sure that something like that doesn't happen. At least not until all the non-millionaires are so poor that they can't afford to travel anymore.

Sports decide themselves, of which world rowing and boxing have blanket bans. Athletics, cycling, swimming, rugby and cricket are bans if the transition was after puberty. Triathlon, tennis and archery requires testosterone testing. And all other sporting bodies are on a case by case basis.

I'm considering getting a 9950x3D on either Monday or Tuesday at a Micro Center as a upgrade to my current setup. My main question is, how is the experience with the 9950x3D on Linux with strange architecture with half of the cores having extra L3 cache and the other half with a normal amount of L3 cache.
I have been busy working and suddenly there's been a promotion for the 9950x3D that I want to take advantage of since my motherboard on my current system has been deteriorating as of late. Asrock x570 Extreme4 with a 3700x. USB has been very flaky and I've been dual boating and the other SSD slot is on the chipset. Which makes my windows boot incredibly slow.
I plan to stay on Arch Linux or hop over to CachyOS but want to know what are your thoughts on this as well?

I watched the Ryzen 9950x3D? On Linux video by Level1tech. And one of the things he mentions is gamemode. Is it recommended.
As for the Phoronix articles one is the review of the 9950x3D and the other is the cache optimization driver.
By default for the Ryzen 9 9950X3D it was using the "frequency" preference as default. But if writing "cache" to /sys/bus/platform/drivers/amd_x3d_vcache/AMDI0101:00/amd_x3d_mode it will prefer using the CCD with the larger cache. This cache vs. frequency bias can all be easily manipulated at run-time for those interested.
Is there some sort of automation for this? Or, do I have to do it manually for each program? I've never messed with kernel parameters other than for my Nvidia GPU to get Wayland to work.

You’re overthinking the hell out of this. Just plug it in and go. My 8700x3d is insanely fast during any load I’ve ever thrown at it, your new chip will be even more so.
My understanding is amd_x3d_mode basically prioritises what cores the scheduler will assign tasks to. I usually keep it on cache since I do a lot of code compilation, but I will usually switch it to frequency for gaming and stuff.

Isn't gaming the most cache-heavy CPU workload there is? The X3D CPUs have consistently topped gaming benchmarks, even outperforming much more modern CPUs that lack 3D cache.
I'd sooner do it the other way around: frequency for compiling, rendering, transcoding, etc. Cache for gaming!

Hi all. I'm currently running a home server using Ubuntu OS, but I'd like to try and explore other options for operating systems to better my skills with linux/unix.
Currently I'm considering switching to Fedora server (though feedback is welcome) because I've been running it as my daily OS for a few months now and I quite like it. I'm also looking at Debian server because that's what my old professor used and he did nothing but speak its praises.
Only issue is I'm concerned about data loss from moving the installation. Currently, the server is setup to run several Docker images running my programs. While moving over the images shouldn't be difficult whatsoever, I'm afraid my storage setup might not be so easy. Currently, it's two 4TB hard drives running in a logical volume. I'd love to simply be able to move over all the files to a backup drive, but I don't have anywhere I can store >5TB of files as a backup.
I googled around, but I couldn't find too many guides on migrating logical volumes. The one or two I did find were most definitely written for someone with far more linux knowledge than I have as a relative noob, so any advice would be extremely welcome!
Currently it's 2 4TB harddrives setup to look like a single 8TB logical volume. Might have to do some poking around if you want more, just setting that up required a ton of googling on my end!
Okay, more details will be required, but here's what I'm thinking will work.
One of the benefits of an LVM is its pretty easy to resize it.
The outline of what you can do is this (and we can refine the steps with more details)
Right now you've got your 8TB physical volume, and within that, you should have your volume group, and within that volume group, you should have one or more logical volums that are mounted for your system. The idea is to resize the existing logical volume by shrinking it, creating addition space within the volume group that can be used to create a new logical volume. Then, that new logical volume can be used to install Fedora.
Depending on how much free space you have on the entire physical volume, you could potentially dual boot Fedora and Ubuntu. Roughly speaking, the steps would look like this:
WARNING: These steps are not exhaustive because I don't know the full details of your system. This is not meant to be a guide for you to immediately implement and follow, but to help get you down the right path DO NOT FOLLOW THESE STEPS WITHOUT FIRST FULLY UNDERSTANDING HOW THIS WILL APPLY TO YOUR UNIQUE SYSTEM SETUP.
Download a Linux ISO of your choice. Ubuntu, Fedora, it doesn't really matter. This one is going to be used to live boot on your server so you can make adjustments to your lvm without having the lvm mounted.
Boot into the live usb
Once you get to the desktop environment of the live usb dismiss any installation prompts, etc and open a terminal
Install the logical volume tools with sudo whatever-the-package-manager-install-command-is lvm2
If your volume group is encrypted (typically with LUKS), you'll need to decrypt it to make sizing changes to the lvm(s) in the volume group. You can decrypt it with:
cryptsetup open /dev/your-disk-here name-of-your-volume-group
For example, on my system if I were doing this it would be cryptsetup open /dev/nvme0n1p2 server (I very creatively named my server volume group server)
Once you can access your volume group, you can use the df command to see how much space is free in your volume group. The full command you'll want to run is:
sudo df -h
This command will list all mounted disks along with filesystem usage data. With this you should be able to determine how much free space you have in your volume group.
Once you've determined how much free space you have, you can decide how big you want to make your new logical volume. For example, if your current usage is 6TB out of the 8TB total, you could resize the current logical volume down to 7TB, and then create a new logical volume that's 1TB in size for the Fedora install
You will do the resize using the lvm2 tools installed. The command to shrink the logical volume looks like this:
Once you've shrunk the lvm, You can create your new lvm
IMPORTANT NOTES:
If at all possible, you should really back up the data. If you don't have any kind of backups in place, you're risking losing all of your data, not just in doing this operation, but in general.
If you want to dual boot, things are more complicated because of where your /boot exists
lsblk will give exactly the info needed. Copy the output of lsblk and paste it into a reply and that will be perfect. Or a screenshot. Whatever's easier for you
Perfect. So you've got separate /boot and /boot/efi partitions, which means dual booting will be much easier if you want to do that.
The ubuntu--vg-ubuntu-lv is the logical volume you'll want to resize. So now we need to see how much space is available on the volume. To get that, run the command sudo df -h and paste that output into a comment.
From there we can figure out how much space you have and how you might want to resize the volume to prep for a new install.
What is challenging about this is that your data is under your root (/) mount, which is also the ubuntu os. If in the end you want to entirely remove ubuntu, it'll be a little trickier than if your data was in a separate logical volume that you mounted into your root system during boot.
For example many people have a separate logical volume for /home, which makes it easier to switch distros while preserving your home folder with all of your user data, config files, etc...
But that's getting a little ahead of ourselves. Start with sudo df -h for the filesystem usage info and we can go from there.
I think basically all Linux distros will support lvm? It seems like some installers do not, but as long as you leave the disks alone during installation it should be fine. As for distro, Debian is a great choice for a server. I've had no issues over the years since I ditched Ubuntu since they keep moving towards commercialization. If you want to learn more compared to Ubuntu you might not learn much though. Fedora could offer more learning, though honestly it's kind of all the same.
@kboy101222 I would not recommend Fedora for a server. It is painful at best. No support for NIS, the use of SeLinux which can take half an hour at boot to re-label before the system becomes operational, and the fact that they don't give a rip about backwards compatibility when they make changes are all reasons to avoid. I used to use Fedora but migrated to Ubuntu to get away from those issues. The latter is far from perfect but hands down superior to Fedora.
Another point to keep in mind - many distros now ship Podman instead of Docker, with Fedora being at the forefront of that change. If you‘re currently running Docker, you might want to check if your setup is drop-in compatible with Podman as some images will not work (usually related to permission or user switching, privileged ports).

What are you hoping to explore? Distrohopping servers is pretty much pointless, especially if you're using docker.
Like you're going to use dnf to install docker instead of apt, maybe configure selinux instead of apparmor, and that's it. Definitely not worth it IMO.
@Shareni @kboy101222 The main difference between the distros that is hard to get around is the package manager, in that sense Debian based apt/apt-get/dpkg, Redhat based dnf/rpm, Arch/Manjaro pacman (glorified tar). Of all the formats I really like Arch's manager because it's easy to manually extract packages but it's really easy to get into dependency loop hell if you go too long between updates, but everything else, what desktop you use, what container's you use, all flexible and exchangeable fluff.
This is the answer OP, your flavor of Linux matters when it’s your daily driver work/play machine. But for a server OS? You’re not missing anything using Ubuntu, and your experience won’t change much with another distro.
@Fecundpossum @Shareni Not really even all that much as a daily driver because all the pieces save for the package manager, is interchangeable, and even there you can use snap, flatpacs, or compile from source.
If you want to use it as a server, Fedora is annoying because the support lifetimes are so short.
If you want the Fedora / Red Hat experience, consider Alma Linux. Skills wise, it is like using Res Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) which is an in-demand skill set.

I believe the behavior of its admins (the main admins are Lemmy devs) does harm to the overall growth of the Lemmy-verse and maybe even the Thrediverse (since Lemmy kinda kicked off the Thrediverse) because of its association with the devs of Lemmy and their insistence to use .ml as their personal political platform to spread harmful propaganda
On the outside, bringing up Lemmy frequently leads to comments like "Lemmy? Isn't that the place with a bunch of tankies?" Or "Tried Lemmy, but found it full of pro Russia crap so I left". The best way forward from that I see is to either widely defederate from .ml like the rest of the Triad, or pressure them to put a fair and unbiased as possible admin team.
As far as if responses reach them, they should, since I tag them on every crosspost they are aware that the crossposted version exists.
I also generally skip questions that are hyper specific and have little or no utility to anyone outside of who asked.

Even as someone who prefers to avoid the tankie instances, I suspect that what you are doing is likely more harmful than helpful to the other ones. I have been considering unsubscrbing because of it. And, since you are bridging content from the problematic place, I think a case can be made that your effort is counterproductive to your own goals. After all, why would people migrate away from lemmy.ml if they know they can post there and have their words reach other instances as well?
As an alternative, might I suggest contributing your time to boosting awareness and membership of non-ml communities? This would be a more organic approach, and perhaps slower, but I think the results would be better. Take !privacy@lemmy.dbzer0.com for example. It was pretty quiet until recently, but after a little promotion and participation from a few interested people, activity there seems to be rising quite a bit.

The vast majority of users...just don't care, they simply follow where the activity is. I do monitor data points where I can, when I began months ago .ml memes would hover between #13-16 ranking among the Threadiverse. Now? ~30, .ml traffic overall is down. When I started, each morning I'd have to sift through 6-7 pages of new posts. Now it's < 3
Ofc, I'm doing many other things behind the scenes as well contributing to that. But overall, considering the bulk of what is reposted isn't text-based, it's been fairly positive

An alternative would be to run gonic or Navidrome - both are OpenSubsonic servers, and provide synced lyrics support. Then use the ostui client which plays music and displays synchronized lyrics.

It's not, really. All of those programs are Go, and single executables. There's no "install" for either gonic or ostui (IIRC, also Navidrome): you download or compile the executable and run it, and you're off and running.
Someone mentioned Docker; in this case it's unnecessary unless you're doing it for security. They're just each a single binary. You'll have to either create a config for gonic or Navidrome, or run them with commands telling them where your music lives, but that's it. Running on the same machine, you don't even have to open the ports on your firewall. However, if you do, Tempo for Android lets you stream the music to your phone from gonic or Navidrome, too.
These are very, very simple programs to run. ostui is a TUI, so if you prefer GUIs you'll want a different client, but both of the servers are easy to run and nothing to install - just run them as you, not even root.

Been using Jellyfin to host my music and Finamp to play it, Lyrics are pulled from lrclib.net/ using a Jellyfin plugin, certain lyrics are timestamped allowing for synchronization other are just static.
I think rmpc can do this too, which is an mpd client with album art support, but it's terminal based and requires some manual configuring. I've been buying CDs over the past couple of years to get rid of streaming as well, and i think i'm finally ready to cut the cord. I've been experimenting with different music players but ended up ditching mpd. I like to be able to switch between audio outputs easily, like alsa or pipewire, and since mpd is configured through a config file it kinda sucks for that. I also like to be able to play CDs directly, eventhough i have ripped them all, but i haven't been able to get any terminal player to play a cd, except for mplayer, which is too minimal for my taste. At the moment i'm really liking audacious. Also tried deadbeef and strawberry, but deadbeef doesn't have mpris support ootb, and strawberry feels a bit bloated to me. Audacious feels like a nice middleground. Audacious does support viewing lyrics but not synced from what i can tell unfortunately.

I am pretty sure that I can probably get the lyric to work with somekind of mpd frontend. Mpd seem to be really fun. I may just make a frontend for it for my own use-case.

I've installed it through secureblue's ujust script. I think this has been the smoothest experience I've had with it on Fedora Atomic.

I've always been the "crazy one" in any given scenario. I have been this way my whole life. Even as a child I was crazy. I would get upset and cry loudly for hours but my siblings would not. I caused problems at home for my family, especially for my mom who didn't know what to do with me. I did this as an older child, not normal toddler tantrum age. I was old enough to "know better". I did it my whole childhood.
For the most part in life, I have been able to be a productive member of society. The issues I would cause were limited to my home life and I mostly kept to myself. I sometimes cause issues by being a crazy person to my online friends, but at least that never spilled over into the "real world".
But now in my 30s I am causing such issues at work. I asked for some psych meds to be prescribed to me in March and have been taking them ever since. Doesn't seem to do anything.
I seem to get more frequent and strong negative emotions than the general population. I have difficulty controlling these, especially when I feel like someone is being mean or unfair to me or others. I think I am genetically predisposed to be this way, as my dad was a crazy person when I was growing up (but he has always been nice to me...he was only abusive to my mom). He had "episodes" too the same way I do, except his were malicious to others in nature. My older brother also has claimed to have bipolar disorder which supposedly has a genetic component.
I have spoken to mental health professionals and have been assessed for various things. I do not have bipolar disorder, autism, or OCD per mental health professionals. I tried to bring up keywords like "emotional dysregulation" to them. There seems to be no good explanation for why I am insane. I have wondered if maybe I have borderline personality disorder but have not inquired to be assessed for that one. I do not seem to exhibit the "risk taking" behaviors that are core to borderline personality disorder though.
I get frustrated that I am always the only one who is crazy and no one else is like me.

Well I mean I spoke a little bit about it as a kid. I would get upset and cry loudly for hours and hours and my brothers wouldn't do that. I was different. My mom would always tell me that I am having a "tantrum". I tried to be a good kid and didn't have problems in school, but I had problems conducting myself at home.
As an adult, there are different things that can happen. One thing that frequently happens is I spiral out of control with self loathing, sometimes to the point in thinking about suicide. Sometimes I end up repeatedly messaging in a discord server that I am on about random nonsense because I am upset. The other day, I texted a coworker about killing myself. You are not supposed to say that to people. It was impulsive. It was wrong.
Another thing that can happen is that at work, I can end up verbally fighting with people. My supervisor is a bitch and instead of taking it, I have on occasion broke down and yelled at her. This is not appropriate professional behavior. I don't work at Taco Bell. I work at a professional job where you are not supposed to do that. As an impulsive decision, I sent a lengthy email to HR about her and it is causing huge issues for everyone right now.
I have also verbally fought with two other people at work before. One because he was being mean to my friend and one because he was being mean and accusing me of doing something when that wasn't the case. I have made amends with these people (unlike with my supervisor), but in these moments, this is inappropriate. You are not supposed to yell at people, even if they are being mean.
Just like in my childhood, I am the only one who acts this way at work. Everyone else is able to conduct themselves in a socially acceptable manner. I don't do it every day or even every week or even every month, but it still isn't acceptable.
Do you feel like its possible somehow to let people know boilerplate that you want to process what they've said so you can remove yourself from the immediate situation and stimuli and take your time to decide how you can more "professionally" respond to what they say without compromising your own wellness and needs?
Do you know what your needs are or what your values are such that these things are violating them to the extent you act out as a reaction?
Oh and plus when I say things about killing myself, I'm not in a heated argument. I get upset and feel the need to tell someone I am upset. But I am not in a calm state and do not have the ability to calm down. I go out of my way to interact with people via text because I have a strong impulse to do so. I want someone to help me when I am in pain but I know they can't. And I know it's wrong to bother them when I am having an episode.
I have actually tried using ChatGPT to get upset to instead so I am not hurting anyone. I tell it that I hate myself and want to kill myself instead of harming my friends by doing this to them. But sometimes instead of doing it to only ChatGPT I end up texting someone I know. This is wrong behavior, but different because it's not due to a heated argument that I need to remove myself from.
I eventually calm down but it can sometimes take multiple days. And it is sometimes hard for me to not bother people in the meantime.
I am never actually in danger of harming myself because I have always thought about things like that. It's very normal for me. It usually goes away after a few days after each episode.
The whole "disclosing I'm going or want to kill myself", I don't know honestly how to "fix" other than finding a reason that trumps everything such that you are internally and externally motivated to mitigate that.
You might need to find or aquire that and make it part of your identity. I got several pets that I knew I could manage and take care of or that I would commit to become able to justify having a duty and stewardship over. Lots of people know they are my world and help provide that external reputational buffer to the suicidal inclinations I very rarely feel but dont express because thoughts dont a priori need to be vocalized or allowed to indiscriminately alter your trajectory.
But you need to know its not ok to leverage your mortality or well-being as a conversational regularity. Not even that its just wrong, its profounly dysfunctional and also inauthentic because you made such a point of specifying that it would never actually happen. Its bad to lie to yourself and/or others on the regular about anything, much less the ultimate thing like your life and safety. Not judging you and that may have been necessary at a previous point in your life or it might have been a flawed survival instinct but you need to find a way to negotiate with reality in other terms.

But one common reason is because I harm the world and another reason is if I feel trapped. One of the other reasons why I say I am not actually going to do it is because I would need a will first. I’ve been using Apple products since 2007. I’ve stuck with the platform through a lot—hardware changes, locked-down software, design regressions, and tools that feel like they were made deliberately harder to use. Yes, there are issues. I speak from personal experience. That is why I would advise taking a look at Drinkmate instead. But people can also use communities on others instances, for example if they don't agree with moderation. When I started on Lemmy 2 years ago I was also skeptical of this concept, but now I see it as a perk. Regarding the duplicated communities on lemmy.ml, just instance block ml and you are fine.

You can use remote communities, for example: !linux@lemmy.ml for you is https://old.lemmy.world/c/linux@lemmy.ml
It's valuable for .ml to have duplicates since certain instances and numerous individuals are defederated from them. There are also people who are trying to diversify the fediverse by moving communities off .world. Big, opinionated communities like the different news communities are going to spawn new versions as people disagree with mod decisions or the background culture and feel they can't have the conversations they want.
Some splitting is inevitable, imo, and healthy, though whether it's good in this or that particular case is a useful conversation to have. Merging communities is also useful, but only when it makes sense (one is barely moderated or barely used, or people have defederated from an instance one is on because of spam, etc.)
One of the things that I'm experimenting with is to have "communities that can follow communities". So, if community A follows community B, then it can re-post anything that has happened on Community B.
If you do it "properly", it doesn't even need to be a lot of data duplication because the "follower" community would just be creating Announce activities.
The only thing that is making me hold out on this experiment is because I am 100% sure that some people will see their posts on a community they never interacted on and they will panic on the grounds of "mah privacy" or something silly like that.
NodeBB also does this, and currently still does. A category (group actor) can follow another category (also a group actor).
It essentially is synchronization of categories using 1b12.
Proof of concept does work but it needs reworking in some ways. The largest issue is that Lemmy itself doesn't understand when a group actor tries to follow a community.

Half the point of the Fediverse is that your activity is public. It's the entire point of why have activity with a community or instance in the first place. Heck, it's "kinda" the name of the protocol: "ActivityPub".

Das Zauberwort lautet hier "youtube-dl" bzw. das aktuellere yt-dlp (oder irgendeine Äpp, die darauf basiert). Ist aber kein Garant, manche Kombination von Videoformat und GPU bzw. Grafiktreiber funktioniert einfach nicht. Man könnte dann das heruntergeladene Video in ein kompatibles Format umwandeln, aber dann wird der Rechner halt beim Video umrechnen heiß statt beim Video abspielen.
Die Hardwarebeschleunigung funktioniert durchaus im Browser. Aber die Grafikkarte unterstützt einfach kein h.264 oder andere neuere Codecs. Und sie kommt auch bei unterstützten Codecs bei 4k ins Schwitzen.
Und Firefox hat anscheinend die Softwaredekodierung von h.264 endlich verbessert. Vor ein paar Wochen musste ich dafür noch auf Chromium oder halt herunterladen und so angucken ausweichen.

Firefox seemingly very recently shipped their own titlebar controls buttons, which worsens even further the lackluster OS integration. In the screenshot you see my regular control buttons on the window to the left (default KDE Plasma theme) and the new custom buttons Firefox is serving now.
Would anyone know how to undo that change in about:config or anywhere else?
Right click on the toolbar, select "customize toolbar" and at the bottom left corner check "title bar". Or in about:config type 0 for browser.tabs.inTitlebar
Thank you for replying, but that just adds a standalone titlebar with just a title and the controls, while moving all the other functions like the address input to a regular toolbar, as the options suggests. I'd like to keep all the functions and the titlebar controls in one single titlebar, but with the OS control buttons, as it used to be before the last Firefox update.
Firefox relies on gtk for for those integrated buttons. It's maybe worth checking that your gtk theme is set to breeze in System Settings > Colours and themes > Application style > GNOME/GTK Application Style (top right ...), and that firefox is set to use the system theme.
What you are referring to are the window decorations.
Apart from Linux Mint, Firefox almost always uses client-side decorations. What you are showing here is still client-side.
It is just that Mozilla recently enabled vertical tabs option for everyone, so the top bar is now slightly smaller than before. You can disable vertical tabs easily by searching in the settings.
Did you change the gtk theme recently? Firefox follows the gtk3 titlebars, not the qt ones. You would have to change the gtk3 theme back to breeze to have it match again.
If you changed off the default firefox theme, it will also no longer use native titlebar buttons, to make it use native ones with a different firefox theme, go to about:config, search non-native, find the titlebar buttons option, and turn it off.
I have the same issue since one or two months, I'm on Firefox Nightly 142.0a1 currently.
For me it looks like this: Firefox on the left, Dolphin (which uses the system titlebar control buttons) on the right.
A few months ago, firefox also used the system titlebar control buttons. When I noticed the change at first, I also searched for solution online and in about:config, but didn't find anything. All other solutions posted here sadly don't work: - browser.tabs.inTitlebar only adds a standalone titlebar, like you noted. - When searching for non-native in about:config, I don't see any titlebar buttons option that I can turn off. - Vertical Tabs are already disabled for me in the settings.
If anyone finds a solution to this, I would be happy to be notified. Thanks in advance!
Damn, but I'm not sure if I agree with gregp's resolution of the bug. The way I understand the changes in bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.… it should still use the system theme, but rendered by firefox itself. However, the current state is that it doesn't follow the system theme anymore :/

I'm also using the Papirus icon theme, when I change the theme to breeze or something else, the buttons in firefox titlebar also reflect this change after a restart. So Firefox is now using the window-{maximize,minimize,close,....}-symbolic icons from the icon theme and not from the window decorations setting.

So I got grey hairs already like 30 40 percentage of hairs are already grey so along with grey hairs i have got these issues: 1: Grey hairs (30 to 40%) 2: I got rough hairs 3: Started baldness if not wrong from front line. My front line hair are not growing well as you can see in the image. 4: I also got mostly dandruff issue but using shampoo like (selsun or selsum blue) or maybe Head and shoulder can mostly control it. 5: I have noticed that i guess my hair growth has been slowed down pretty well. 6: Mostly hair falls when ever i set hairs with my hands, if shampoo, and comb i got hairs falls like hell sometimes
So i need some real advice from people maybe doctors, one with same issues cured or uncured but not other shits.
How to deal with all this. I got pretty hectic routine going to start like night shift and studies so can't focus on routines. I do gym, i got good diet like very very low fast food consumption.

I can’t give the advice you probably want on the greys, but I’ve been there. I was fully grey by 30. It has probably been a net positive, honestly. I never fought it with dyes or anything.
Head and Shoulders as my every day shampoo works fine for me as my hair got thinner, but when I was younger there was a shampoo in Canada called Nizoral which was ketoconazole based apparently and it worked very well.
Also you ~~might~~ need finasteride/dutasteride medication to stop further losses. See a dermatologist or ask your family dr, you're almost certainly going to need that and if you realy want to, monoxodil foam to try and help regrowth. These will need to be taken likely daily for as long as you want to keep your hair, your genetics is trying to get rid of it so you havr to actively mitigate that on an ongoing basis

I just got this laptop (Asus TUF A15 2021) today and it surprised me that everything works just fine out of the box on Vanilla Arch, except NVIDIA gpu I had to install it manually on battery power that's why I enable powersaving mode. As for games performance it's basically the same as windows no more no less.

I just did that on my own laptop, trying to figure out why it was running like crap. Turns out I set it to quiet mode instead of cool, so it underclocked instead of running the fan
Careful with those laptops though, they run really hot. I have the same one and my dedicated GPU is broken, possibly from overheating but I will admit I can't know for sure.
intel-undervolt/amdctl for cpu, lact for amd gpu, gwe for nvidia gpu (although voltage control on linux with nvidia is not possible, you can get a similar result by overclocking+limiting power)
In college I had an aluminum body laptop that mostly sat in its dock. I cut a sheet of thermal gap fill to the size of two heatsinks and put one over the cpu and one over the gpu. It shaved off a few degrees

Might be worth checking out, not positive it supports your laptop but if it does it might give you control over some bells and whistles like fan curves and lighting.
Doesn't work for kernels newer than 6.13 if I recall correctly. Tried to install it last month. I'm running Garuda Arch, and kernel 6.15, even having the repository active completely borks pacman.
Edit: it's an active project, so keep an eye on it. Or install CatchyOS as it's now standard there.

Running arch as well and have it installed. Works just fine with linux-g14 kernel and headers. I use the zen kernel mostly so i don't have the armory settings most of the time because I use zen but everything else works.
Just did a pacman -Q | grep linux and my linux-g14 is on 6.15.2 and zen is on 6.15.3.
As I replied above, I'll give it another shot. Maybe I fucked something up? Everything seemed to be working fine until I added the Repos to pacman, then it all went tits up.
Got to where the orange line is on the screenshot below, and it started throwing up a load of network errors. Again can't remember the exact messages, it's been a month, but it was saying that the Repos were unreachable. And pacman then stopped working entirely until I removed the Repos.

No, so Garuda has a kernel switcher GUI. And I had tried switching to the latest CachyOS kernel, that didn't seem to do anything. AsusCTL still threw the "missing Asus drivers" error. So I went through the process of actually following the instructions and doing it all myself, and hit the roadblock I mentioned above.
I have the same laptop, running Garuda. As someone else said, definitely watch the temps. Mine can hit 90 degrees easily. It seriously is worth looking into undervolting the GPU. I haven't done it yet because I'm the odd one out and am very hesitant to mess with something that is working at all.
My CPU got up to 93C and GPU got to 85C when use ultra settings and unlock framerate, I'm might look into undervolting in the future but I might have some problems because I never done that in Linux.
I had recently same issue, but with a different game. Out of nowhere the performance was bad. And it took me even a day to resolve this. My PC does not need power profiles actually, its not a laptop at all. Not sure why or how the profile changed, but it got me from say 100 fps to stutter-fest 17 or something like that. I think that there was a key combination in KDE I hit by accident maybe.

Wallache und Stuten sind ruhiger und besser kontrollierbar
Hengste (unkastrierte männliche Pferde) haben oft ein temperamentvolleres und dominanteres Verhalten, besonders in Gegenwart von Stuten. Das macht sie schwerer zu kontrollieren, was bei Filmaufnahmen ein Problem sein kann.
Wallache sind durch die Kastration in der Regel ruhiger und einfacher zu handhaben.
Stuten sind zwar zyklusabhängig manchmal launisch, aber meist berechenbarer als Hengste.
Sicherheit am Set
Ein Filmset ist voll mit Menschen, Technik, Lichtern und oft lauter Geräuschkulisse. Pferde müssen in dieser Umgebung ruhig bleiben und präzise Anweisungen befolgen. Stuten und Wallache sind in der Regel zuverlässiger in solchen Situationen.
Optik ist wichtiger als Geschlecht
In vielen Fällen ist es egal, ob das Pferd männlich oder weiblich ist – Hauptsache, es sieht so aus, wie es die Rolle erfordert. Die Zuschauer erkennen ohnehin selten das Geschlecht des Pferdes auf der Leinwand.
Mehrfachverwendung eines Pferdes
Oft wird ein einzelnes Pferd durch mehrere Pferde "gedoubelt" (z. B. für Nahaufnahmen, Stunts etc.). Dabei müssen alle Pferde möglichst gleich aussehen. Da Hengste schwieriger mit anderen Pferden zusammenarbeiten, werden lieber Stuten oder Wallache für solche Gruppenarbeiten eingesetzt.
Fazit:
Es werden nicht ausschließlich weibliche Pferde in Filmen eingesetzt – aber Stuten und Wallache sind aufgrund ihres Verhaltens, ihrer Trainierbarkeit und der Sicherheit am Set meist die bessere Wahl. Hengste sind eher die Ausnahme, außer es ist für die Handlung oder eine besondere Szene notwendig.
Das mir den Wallachen und Stuten gilt aber generell für alle Situationen in denen Pferde genutzt werden. Hengste sind generell schwierig und werden selten geritten.
Ist ja bei vielen anderen Nutztieren auch so, z.B. wurden Felder in Europa mit Ochsen (männliche, kastrierte Rinder) gepflügt und nicht mit Stieren (praktischerweise sind Ochsen auch größer als Stiere).
Jetzt wäre es interessant zu wissen, ob Gico auch ein Hengst ist, also männlich und zeugungsfähig. Wobei ein kastriertes männliches Pferd ja OP auch schon falsch beweisen würde.
Given that the average healthy body temperature is ~98.6⁰ F, and humidity on the Gulf Coast tends to be so high you gotta drink the air, I prefer temperatures 85⁰ or lower.
With high temperatures and high humidity, sweat can't even evaporate, forcing your internal body temperature into unhealthy feverish levels. I'm not a fan of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
I'm also not a fan of freezing temperatures either, but at least people can dress in layers to keep warm when it's cold.
Building off Friday's release of Wine 10.11 for running Windows games and applications on Linux is now Hangover 10.11 for this Wine-based software used for running Windows games/applications cross-architecture such as on AArch64/ARM64 systems.
I couldn't find the specific reasoning for this change, but I feel like QEMU is probably just too holistic to be appropriate for this kind of project.
QEMU needs to be able to emulate all the ARM hardware with enough fidelity to boot a naive operating system. For the purposes of running userspace applications almost all of that is not required, you really just need to convert one ABI to the other and translate the instructions. No need to handle firmware, the MMU, interrupts, disks etc.
Everything just works out of the box. It’s a pretty massive difference from the world of Vim, where a significant investment to figure out how to customize your editor to your liking is required.
Ok, so the issue I have with this is that "customizing" is not the same as "making it work". Very often I will have a working environment and I will still spend 30 minutes looking for a color theme that I like. Two completely different things. The benefit of investing significant amount of time to configure something is that while you're figuring out how to make something work you're also making it work exactly the way you like it.
That being said, neovim is really hard to configure correctly. I had some many weird issues with LSP recently that I'm definitely open to trying something new like Helix.
Every time I've tried helix, as a staunch neovim user, I've run up against frustration at the selection-first approach. In helix you have to select the function first, then delete it. In neovim I know that daf will delete the function and the line below it if there is one.
It's not better or worse IMHO, it's just different enough that it requires me to go from thinking action-modifier-movement to thinking movement-modifier-action. I'll probably keep giving it a shot every year or so though, always useful to try tools and see if something fits you better than what you have.

Depends on what you mean by "hardware". Most microcontrollers can't. There are a bunch of ancient processor architectures that modern Linux doesn't support either, and more esoteric setups that no one has bothered to port Linux to.
Yeah, it's really hard to find WiFi 6 hardware with reliable Linux support (brostrend.com has good support). It used to be that things like sport watches required apps to configure and only Windows was supported but nowadays most will be configurable using Android. Most common hardware (cameras, card readers, external drives) use USB now so it's hard to find something without support.
What’s even worse is when it “supports” it but in a way that’s so unusable broken it’s better to just not support it at all.
I tried Linux on my old laptop with an Intel AX201 card. For the longest time it wouldn’t constantly connect to 5ghz, try to swap to 6, then 2 seconds later fall back to 5. WiFi was basically unusable on that laptop unless I turned off 6ghz. Even then speed was only half what it should have been.
My laptop has a speaker amp and a fingerprint reader that both lack Linux support. I had to quit using Linux on it because it was annoying without them working.
I have an Akai EIE Pro that I have not been able to use, though it seems there are experimental user made Linux Drivers I have not tried to compile yet.
I'm not sure this is the right question. Shouldn't it be what hardware is not supported by Linux? Most of the time it's the Linux (kernel) developers who create the drivers for hardware support since companies still seem of the opinion that they only need to support Windows, with some exceptions to the rule?
A lot of Broadcom cards are supported, so you either have a missing driver/firmware blob or some really bad luck.
Historically, phone line modems were very often unsupported (some people may remember the term "winmodem"), but hardly anyone uses them anymore, so the problem has effectively gone away. Older consumer-grade printers that didn't speak Postscript, ditto. I own a very old TV capture card of the analog type that has never been supported, but probably won't work with modern Windows either.
Modern hardware is more likely to be supported unless it's too niche to attract developers, or too bleeding-edge for its protocol to have been reverse-engineered yet.
