Xbox was the only Microsoft product that I liked, paid for and used. I don't use Windows or Office -except when mandated at work-, but I've had the Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox One S, and Xbox Series S. I have over 300 owned digital games on Xbox. I decided to move away from Xbox a year ago, I never used Steam before Autumn last year, and now I game on the Steam Deck more than anything else. The writing has been on the wall for a few years now though, so this news isn't surprising. I still wanted to get an Xbox Series X to keep playing the digital games I collected over the years and was waiting for a price cut but they went and raised the prices instead.

Lemmy.ml is an instance run by admins who are hardcore tankies and will enforce their ideology on their instance through various means from allowing (and pushing it themselves) propaganda (Such as Russia being justified in some way to invade Ukraine) and known propaganda outlets (Like RT) to removing content on their instance critical of their favored authoritarian regimes such as Russia or China and even banning users for such speech or speech critical of them if it's off their instance (Just like the Reddit mods of ol!).
If it was just some random instance it would have been defederated from long ago like the rest of the "Tankie Triad" (Hexbear and Lemmygrad), but they've positioned lemmy.ml as the "flagship" instance and abused that position and influence to become large enough to keep other instances from defederating from them.
Which I believe is harmful to the Lemmy-verse's overall growth and outside reputation. I have seen it come up before on Reddit threads (and other testimonials from people who came back and tried it again) that "They tried Lemmy but it was a bunch of tankies and went back to Reddit"
I don't know about you, but I'd prefer Lemmy to not end up with the reputation for being "Tankie Central " or even worse "Voat 2.0".

I've been thinking about this a bit since I read it this morning, and I think the only reason they were able to get rid of STV is because it was only STV for Calgary and Edmonton. With a single party still able to sweep the rural ridings, they were given solid majority governments, which shouldn't be the case with "real" STV.
I have no idea how we'll get either half of the LPC/CPC to enact STV, when FPTP has them oscillating between consecutive usually majority governments, but I expect STV will be hard to get rid of once we've had a single election with it. One recent study indicates that 78 per cent of Canadian students have used generative AI to help with assignments or study tasks. In China, authorities have even shut down AI apps during nationwide exams to prevent cheating.
The support structures and policies to guide students’ and educators’ responsible use of AI are often insufficient in Canadian schools. In a recent study, Canada ranked 44th in AI training and literacy out of 47 countries, and 28th among 30 advanced economies. Despite growing reliance on these technologies at homes and in the classrooms, Canada lacks a unified AI literacy strategy in K-12 education.
Without co-ordinated action, this gap threatens to widen existing inequalities and leave both learners and educators vulnerable. Canadian schools need a national AI literacy strategy that provides a framework for teaching students about AI tools and how to use them responsibly.
AI literacy is defined as:
“An individual’s ability to clearly explain how AI technologies work and impact society, as well as to use them in an ethical and responsible manner and to effectively communicate and collaborate with them in any setting.”
Whether you think AI is a good or bad thing, the fact is it’s here. AI literacy enables students to make safe and informed decisions when using AI, preventing habits that compromise academic integrity.

The technological progress LLMs represent has come to completion. They're a technological dead end. They have no practical application because of hallucinations, and hallucinations are baked into the very core of how they work. Any further progress will come from experts learning from the successes and failures of LLMs, abandoning them, and building entirely new AI systems.
AI as a general field is not a dread end, and it will continue to improve. But we're nowhere near the AGI that tech CEOs are promising LLMs are so close to.
Learning about how AI works and what it is/isn't good at, is a good thing? It will most likely make kids use generative AI less, and be careful about what they use it for
People who are pro-AI seem so weird and dystopian, people who are anti-AI seem logical and reasonable, but my employer requires us to use AI, and I've even been forced to work on multiple AI projects recently. It does seem it's unavoidable unfortunately, but honestly Copilot has given me some of the most useful autocompletions I've ever had, especially for tedious things like logging, and I've had good luck with ChatGPT assisting with tedious things as well like writing both scaffolding and queries. I would love to see something like this in Canada, but I don't think our politicians (or electorate) have the guts.
You can't build high rise due to zoning, social housing isn't a solution it's a work around, to the problem of severe urban sprawl coupled with 1960s infrastructure and mass immigration.

Because individual blocks, be it for a user or instance, are not blocks. It's a barely functioning "mute", and is likely the way dessalines wants it since it was implemented this way 4 years ago and not a peep on fixing it since. Even now as they barrel towards a 1.0 release, nothing.
The only true block on Lemmy, is defederation or site bans (for individuals)
Even if it did work as expected, it still allows their toxic misinformation and propaganda to spread throughout the Threadiverse. Scaring away new users and making it look like we "accept" it because there's ever decreasing push back to it
.world has not defederated from Lemmy.ml, I really wish they would, being the largest it would be of huge boost to the health of the Threadiverse

Thanks for the heads up. I’m surprised that the support channel/community on .world doesn’t have a post requesting outright defederation from .ml. I’ve searched through nearly two years of posts there but found nothing substantial.
I don't think it was on the support comm, but they did respond on a thread about it once on why they don't defed from them like they did the other 2.
It boiled down to 3 things: big comms, official Lemmy support comms and the fact the devs rolled out instance blocking tools

Haselnusshack, mit etwas Öl rösten gehackte schwarze Oliven braten gekochte Nudeln, z.B. Fussili (wichtig ist, dass die Nudeln so klein sind, dass man sie mit dem Löffel essen kann) ordentliche Portion Parmesan o.Ä.
Alles mischen, mit Löffel essen damit Oliven und Nusshack auch zusammen mit Nudeln und Käse in den Mund kommen. Schmeckt ziemlich gut und ich liebe die Textur.
Mit dem Öl vom Braten/Rösten und der Feuchtigkeit der Nudeln (sie sollten nicht so lange getrocknet sein, dass sie zusammenkleben) geht das schon. Ist aber schon Teil der Textur, dass es trockener ist im Vergleich zu einem Nudelgericht mit einer richtigen Sauce. Hab aber auch schon öfter eine halbe Portion Nudeln ohne alles gegessen (Kochwasser sollte dann gut gesalzen sein), wenn man sich das überhaupt nicht vorstellen kann ist dieses Gericht vielleicht nix für einen.

I got completely annihilated on Korean rice wine once. Tested like slightly sweet water. Ice cold, very refreshing. By glass number four, I was at stage 2 snot bubble. Something like 24% ABV and I was drinking water glasses of it
It is a little bit like vodka. It is served ice cold, tastes like mildly sweet water and comes in a beer-style bottle so people who don't know what it is drink way too much of it too fast and then get hit like a hammer.
Now I kinda want to try soju. I have yet to meet a drink with any appreciable amount of alcohol in it that doesn't taste like paint thinner smells to me. The only way I've ever been able to "not taste the alcohol" is if there's barely any in the drink.
If that's your metric just drink "flavored fortified wine" aka bum my wine like MD 20/20. It's really high alcohol content and super sweet to mask the poor quality.
I've tried wines like that before. I apparently have that gene where you super taste bitter and it just tasted like flat LaCroix mixed with paint thinner.
That's gotta be a different gene, bourbon and rye taste like bitter wood to me (because of tannins from the cask aging) instead of the boozy vanilla that many people claim it tastes like, yet (decent) vodka tastes completely neutral to me. But I do believe that some people perceive alcohol itself as bitter while others do not.

Soju tastes kinda like vodka. I think sake is a good balance of "high enough alcohol" and "doesn't taste like paint thinner." Not a connoisseur by any means but a bottle of Kurosawa is cheap and tastes pleasant and fruity, and has around 14% ABV.
I probably won't be able to tolerate it then sadly. I'm super sensitive to bitter flavors that's seemingly why alcohol is always so unpleasant to me. I've tried so many drinks that even friends who barely drink at all say they can hardly taste the alcohol that all tasted just vile to me. Thanks though!
Can you elaborate on that? I've never seen anything about people adding water or other mixers into their sake (except the rare case of sake cocktails, which are definitely not the default way of drinking sake).
That said, I usually add water when I drink sake, but I do that because that's what I do with most of my alcoholic beverages; I never got the impression that this is actually the normal way of drinking it.
Yeah, just a few ml to take the edge off - it's not even about the alcohol for me (I happily sip 63% ABV rum if it's the good stuff), but about the unusual sake-specific flavor. I could probably sip a milder sake as-is, but we don't exactly have a huge amount of choice where I live.

I'm mostly working off magazine articles, blog posts and books like David Wondrich's "Imbibe!". Most of the time, a simple web search with terms like "how to drink [beverage]" will yield results. e.g. for single malt whisky you can easily find articles and lengthy forum discussions over how much, if any, water to add, and plenty of articles write about what temperature to drink sake at and how to make hot sake. Though it's always possible that something is fairly common in Japan that western bloggers are not aware of.

From what I can observe lurking, communication between Lemmy and Mastodon is pretty half-baked, with things overall boiling down to users on Mastodon being able to follow Lemmy users, but not the opposite, and posts from Mastodon users may appear on Lemmy but with the text body appearing as title instead. Issues like these may appear due to how each site engine handles the data received. If you must follow users from Mastodon on Reddit-like forums, Mbin is far more compatible.
From Mastodon you can follow Lemmy communities and Lemmy users. Some Lemmy communities name gets hashtags on mastodon, e.g. if you follow #idm there, you will see posts from !idm@lemmy.zip
From Lemmy you cannot follow/subscribe to anything from Mastodon. You can see replies and posts of Mastodon users in Lemmy communities
If you want to follow all from one account with a Lemmy-like interface, the closest you can get is with Mbin. There you can follow Lemmy communities, Mastodon and Lemmy users. You cannot follow Mastodon hashtags though.

Have you considered installing the roundabouts anyway and removing the driving licences of those incapable of manoeuvring around a simple roundabout?
Driving is not a right. If they can't perform simple manoeuvres without endangering others, they shouldn't be controlling a machine that can easily accidentally kill.
They solve the average driver. A certain number of drivers are jsut shit that need their licences removed, there's no question about that.
But let's consider the majority, myself for example.
I'm keenly aware of vulnerable road users, and active at the municipal and provincial levels in improving road safety, I take active and public transportation whenever practical.
When I lived in Montréal, I rarely sped, logs of questionable accuracy show somewhere around 10% of the time. Now that I'm in Kingston it's around 80% of the time.
I'm even a less aggressive driver in Kingston, but the geometry of the roads here leads me to unconsciously speed a lot.
While not ideal, this can still be useful. In Sweden, we employ speed cameras strategically around areas of higher risk, such as intersections with cars coming onto a larger road with an obscured view. Reducing the speed in that particular spot does probably save lives.
Still, adjusting the design speed is the preferable alternative, but that does not make speed cameras completely ineffective.
No, and they really don't need them. Ottawans merge somewhere between 60 and 80, and drive more slowly in general. In most Ontario cities, driving at 100 in the left lane will get you run over. In Ottawa, you will be passing everyone.
Maybe take it down about 20 percent there, friend. You commented that Ottawa drivers speed up to 90 between speed cameras. I replied, a bit tongue in cheek, that Ottawa drivers don't drive 90, not even on the 417, where they're supposed to. Ottawa is the only city I have driven in where significant numbers of people drive at or below the speed limit, even when traffic would permit them to go faster, and that was the case even before the speed cameras. That generally forces everyone else to be honest enough, but I concur, Ottawans definitely hammer the brakes down even harder right before a speed camera. Or while merging on the 417.

Bigger problem is people are bad judges of risk while driving. People's perception of how fast they can safely travel doesnt line up with their actual abilities.

Nah, I don't believe that's what happens, because we've had so many single vehicle crashes because people have no idea what feels safe. They drive like they're behind a screen, like a video game. Except that screen is a windshield and their face can go through it.
Someone going 100km/h in a 40 zone is an asshole who has no regard for human life. No road design will make them care, and the solution to that problem is to not allow certain people to drive.
Equip vehicles with behaviour sensing tech, and if someone is routinely driving aggressively, not stopping when they should, speeding, and parking in areas that put others in danger, they should lose their license.
I don't really care that much either way for speed cameras. They work in a very limited fashion, but they punish the poor the most, and the money goes to cops.
At the end of the day speed cameras are a solution to a problem that doesn't need to exist. We are failing to use technology available to us for basically no reason - without any kind of economic/punitive incentive.

Hey I got a ticket for going 57 in a school zone where the posted limit is 50, except the road only borders the far end of the school yard at the tip of its soccer field, with no way for students to exit, and the road itself is 4 lanes and should really have a speed limit of 60, and it was Sunday... Easter Sunday to be precise, so it was literally a school zone surrounded by days off.

I believe rural school zones are sometimes 50km/h. In context the non-school zone speed limit is usually 80km/h or more, often with visibility from one horizon to the other and a sprawling parking lot, it's not quite the same as a congested urban school with a driveway big enough to fit a single bus and dozens of cars parked along the curb.

I know someone who got a ticket but the sign was obscured by a tree branch. After contesting the ticket, the ticket was dropped and the signage was fixed
It isn't illegal to go under the limit. If you were unsure of the timing of the 40 zone, the safe thing would be to just do 40 anyway. I agree its still not a great system, my area typically has a 40 sign with yellow lights that flash during times the 50 zone drops to a 40. It'd be better to just always have it be a 40 zone.

Yea we've avoided the mass privatization of speed cameras so far and the vast majority of the fines goes into the city municipal budget, where it can be spent pretty much anywhere but often is spent on the roads themselves.
We literally do not have enough law enforcement to properly enforce traffic laws. It is part of why average speeds have crept up to 10-20 over the limit. In fact enforcing traffic laws was kinda just something that was thrown at the police when cars were invented and we've never really stopped to think about it since.
I can't even remember the last time I even saw a cop doing speed enforcement in Toronto. Definitely not on the highways. It makes total sense to automate this, and I highly doubt anybody lost their job over it.
How about instead of speed cameras you change your road designs? People won't speed if they cannot speed safely.
Make your roads less wide. Add some curves, depending on required max speed, you make the curves larger or smaller. On lower speed roads, add obstacles to drive around.
There are many forms of traffic management that don't require speeding cameras but then again, speeding cameras are for making the government money, not for traffic safety
Honest to god, it's not that hard to do 40 km/h in these zones. They post a sign telling you there's a speed camera coming up. You just have to go 40 for like 20 meters to avoid a ticket.
Why should we socialize the cost of fixing the road design, when we can instead make the individuals who speed pay?
Both is good, because the way our streets are designed are both dangerous and expensive. Narrowing that 40 zone by the school can remove excess road space that now doesn't need to be maintained, cleaned, plowed, or salted. The excess space could be used by school, have trees planted, or be used for alternative transport like transit or bikes.
The roads are currently designed to prioritize driver throughput and provide "wiggle room" for driver error, often at the expense of people outside of the vehicle. Many of the concepts that engineers use to make highways safe were applied to city streets, which in hindsight maybe we don't want our city streets to be designed like highways.
The problem is that people are AWFUL at evaluating their own risk when driving, and drive at speeds that ARENT safe. Look at how few people leave appropruate stopping distances between vehicles, which is the #1 factor in preventing accidents.
The methods you proposed would likely decrease the speed vehicles travel at (ie from 80 to 60) because drivers feel like they can't travel at that speed, but the road likely still isn't safe for vehicles to travel at 60 when its that narrow.
Speed cameras catch everyone speeding, 24/7, and are the single best, economical, way to eliminate speeding from a road. Cop can't pull over every vehicle going 80 on a 4 lane road rated for 60, but the camera can ticket them all.
For sure, promote a narrower road, encourage MUP over sidewalks, and encourage safer driving when you talk to your councilors, but road reconstruction happens, generally, once every 25-50yrs. We can't wait for that timeframe to fix these problems.
We donthat because we found that wide roads make people drive faster unconsciously. If you design roads badly, people will speed, it will be dangerous. Design roads better and you save lives.

A slightly different post had road fatalities in a graph for the US, Canada, and Australia, showing insane levels of road deaths. A secondary graph was added showing the Netherlands at a fraction of those countries, even though the Netherlands is much more densly populated.
Wanna know why? Because the Netherlands does this all the time. Any time an intersection has a lot of accidents, they break up the damn thing and put in a completely newly designed one, and traffic deaths go down. A road has too much speeding? They'll tear out that crap, put in a new road designed in such a way that people will automatically drive the correct speed et voila, speeding stops, Ross fatalities go down

Sure, thereay still be an eventually asshole but with the right design you could make a risky (for you) 80 in a 60 zone, but you can't do 100 because you wouldn't make it. It also COSTS an incredible amount of money. Ontario has some pretty terrible, unmaintained roads, before we start hand holding BMWs so they don't get tickets we should be repairing our existing infrastructure and maybe putting in some more bike lanes.
Why make it more complicated for self driving cars? Several companies already have decent AD systems. Realistically more than 100% of cars will be driven with some degree of automation in the next decade.

At no point did the article claim a desire to ban cars, we are just asking cars to go the posted limit. The idea that hating car dependancy is classist and racist is absurd. Providing free public transit can be one of the most effective ways to lift people up in society. Plenty of people would use their electric scooter in the winter. Tons of people have fun all winter in cold conditions riding snow mobiles, the same gear that works for them could keep a scooter rider warm. The bigger issue for scooter riders is our cities refuse to maintain safe infrastructure for them.
UK we have had speed cameras for ages. There was a trend for people to either spray paint the lens or even firebomb the camera. So they had to put in a second (video) camera mounted as high as possible to protect the first camera, quite amusing that a safety camera has to be kept safe by another safety cameras, its cameras all the way down.
Personally I think speed cameras that monitor a fixed point are pretty dumb unless that fixed point is an accident black spot such as outside a school or a red light camera for dangerous set of traffic lights. Its far better to have average speed cameras for a large section of road but those are more costly as you need way more cameras to make them work outside of motorways as you need to cover all the junctions properly.
Latest cameras we have in testing can see if you do not have your seat belt done up or are using your phone. Just stopping people from using their phone has to be the biggest step forward we can make with modern road safety.

One of the first speed cameras I remember in Belgium was just behind the crest of a highway. Drivers would give more power to drive up the hill at the speed limit, they'd cross the crest and that same power would make them overshoot the speed limit. So they put a camera right there to maximize the fines. Without the camera there was nothing special about that spot, but with the camera there were a lot of front end collisions. Fine revenue was apparently more important than safety.
Placement of new speed cameras has gotten more sensible with time fortunately, but those old speed traps are still left in place unfortunately. For highways we now have a lot of average speed tracking and that has really improved the flow of traffic. And for villages/towns, there is often a clearly visible lone camera box at the beginning of the low speed zone, those work so well that there is often no camera in them, just the box is enough.
Instead of wasting money on speed cameras and reducing speeds, we should be aggressively ticketing distracted drivers and pedestrians, and people who struggle to reach the limit in the first place.
Speeding is an inherently human problem, you cannot solve the human, you can only trick the human into solving the problem for you, i.e. scaring them and making speeding actively risky for their own car.
Ultimately, on top of traffic calming, we need way better public transit and making driver's licences harder to acquire with longer, more rigorous training. That way, driving is not an obligation and those who don't want to drive or should not be driving do not have to drive. Not everyone was meant to drive.
Speeding is inherently a human problem because speed limits are a human constraint. There's no reason why we should have 4 lane roads (2 in each direction, sometimes even with a middle turning lane) at 50-60km/h. There's also no reason why they should be going from 80 down to 50-60.
What's more effective at changing bad driving behaviour, being caught in the moment and spending 10 min on the side ofbthe road getting a ticket, or getting a ticket in the mail a couple if weeks later when you've probably forgotten that you were even on that road at that time?
Then you tick the court date box and mail it back to them. Then two or three years later, you get a court date, so you dust off your form letter charter 11b challenge, send it off to all relevant parties, head down to the Winchester and wait for all of this to blow over.
Aware, and I fully agree. I am just adding to the point that not only does it fail to address the safety issue, but the massive uptick in tickets generated by this solution will inevitably spill over into an already overwhelmed court system, which will cost us economically and socially.
Depends on how often the camera needs to be repaired/replaced and where the money goes for the tickets it writes.
Cops need to start ticketing: - people changing lanes without indication - people turning without indication - people driving in the inside lane when they're not passing - people who take more than 2 seconds to react to a light change - People following bumper-to-bumper forming left-turn trains through yellow/red lights - People who take more than a few seconds to get back up to speed
And also: - Pedestrians who stand on the edge of the curb at the corner waiting for the light to change so they can cross - Pedestrians standing literally on the edge of the road at the corner waiting for the light to change so they can cross
Ticketing people for going under the limit is not wise. The biggest issue is due to inclement weather. We don't want people driving faster than is safe for conditions due to fear of a ticket.

Hi peeps, My big trip through Canada is only three weeks away now and I'm starting to feel nervous 😬 So I thought I'd post here to ask y'all a few things, mainly about socialising and meeting folks. - specifics about my travels at the bottom
1.) I'm still looking for couch surfing hosts in Vancouver and Toronto. People on beWelcome aren't really answering. Is there some advice? Or advice on cheap accommodation for 1-3 nights in those towns? Or maybe even some of y'all who'd like to hosts me 😀
2.) what are some good ways to meet people on the road? Are there social media apps that are favoured in Canada? Specific places for travellers? (YMCA, hostels, clubs...?)

My trip is: arriving in Vancouver on the 25th of Juli, renting a car on the next day. Plans to travel the west for about 3 weeks. Domestic flight to Toronto on the 16th of August, rental car in Toronto on the 17th, driving around Ontario and the east for two weeks. Departure from Toronto on the first of September.
I can't help for places to stay, but I can apologize for the beer in advance. Try to relax and have a good time, if you quit worrying about meeting people, you will meet people. Go see and do the things that look good to you, everything else will just happen. Enjoy your stay.
If you're going to be in the West for 3 weeks, make sure you get over to Vancouver Island for a few days. The ferry with a car is pretty expensive, around $100 each way, but the ferry ride itself is beautiful and then island has lots of wonderful places to visit from the City of Victoria at the south end with the BC Legislature, Empress Hotel, Butchart Gardens, etc. then you can take a trip up to some pretty spectacular locations in the mid-island like Cathedral Grove (Giant Douglas Fir Trees) and Coombs Market, and then maybe into Tofino (Expensive accommodations but amazing surfing and ocean beaches)
Just stop a lot if you want to meet people. Make small talk, be open about your travels, ask locals where the cool spots are. Since it's summer, you could make a point to check out some public trails, lakes, and national or provincial parks. You'll definitely find people there.
For accommodations, unfortunately summer tourism is big business in "cottage country" and the cheap spots, even for a few days, were likely booked months ago. You may be able to park overnight at a campground for a decent price, though. But I suggest you still keep looking at B&Bs and motels just in case something pops up last minute.
Here's a tip I heard from a person living in their car: if you can't find a place to stay, try looking for a large parking lot (like a Walmart or something) with a big transport truck parked at the front somewhere; that often means it's okay/low-risk to park overnight.
I can't help with find a place to stay but if you're hitting up Vancouver I'd recommend renting a bike near Stanley Park/aka weed island and go bike around. I found it easy to meet people and make new friends there plus the oceanic beach view and super fresh air is soooo nice💖
So I am a full-fledged Canadian, lol, but this is not stuff I know a lot about. Reddit might be a good way to find more suggestions for local things like inexpensive places to stay or fun things to do. AirBNB is a place to find short-term rentals. Hostels are a thing. How East of Toronto do you plan to go? I think you'll find Canadians quite welcoming. Check out the things that are up your alley and I'm sure you'll strike up some friends in those spaces. A solo vacation is really cool, good on you. I haven't done it, but I hope to in the next couple years
Vancouver people aren't as friendly and open as in other parts of Canada. Of course there will be people, but as a rule there is the Seattle/Vancouver freeze, where they are just cold shoulder types.

A friend of mine lived in a Vancouver apartment for years, and people were super cold. He lost his shit after a few years, when he's walking to the elevator and the person sees him a few steps away and hits the close button. Probably not a great response but went off like " I see you everyday, you know me, and you know I live here and your just going to close the door and make me wait 5 more minutes while elevator hits all the other floors. Wtf is wrong with you."
My wife and I play a game when we go for a walk, we take in turns saying hello to those passing on the sidewalk in a suburb...and see who gets snubbed the most.
See, I grew up in Vancouver, and I always thought exactly the same. Then I moved to the UK and realised that it's only cold for Canada. There's loads of situations where I'd normally have a chat with someone, in line to buy groceries or a coffee, but try that here and people look at you like you've grown a third arm. Another thing that still trips me up after 5 years here is internalising the fact that when someone you see often but don't really know isn't actually trying to start a conversation when they say "you alright?" it's just the same as saying hello. And good luck getting directions if you're lost.

1) hostels in Canada are generally fine, not luxury but social. Vancouver's Chinatown is cheap, downtown and well connected. However the downside with the cheap area there is the street can smell and there are plenty of homeless people, minding their own business. Otherwise you'll be on the outskirts.
2) if you're getting to know people my age, instagram is pretty popular (i dont have it)
3) people are generally nice all over Canada, hospitality will vary by area and person. Go to nightclubs Fri and Sat mostly if you're into that. Social spots are cafes bars and beaches.
Bad news: Toronto traffic is nuts, and accoms are expensive. Good news: transit is good. Assuming you're landing at pearson, the UP Express train takes you straight into downtown & it's like $10. Anywhere you could want to go in the city centre is walkable or easy to get to on transit, no reason to drive, really. In certain spots during rush hour, it's actually faster to walk than drive. But, that's a good thing for exploring.
Don't be afraid to ask people for help or directions while you're here. People in Toronto and Vancouver have a lot of pride in their cities, and want visitors to have a good time, especially if they're coming from overseas. Canadians are typically kind, and helpful!

I've got an IKEA Tradfri LED driver and a Rodret dimmer. When I first installed them I thought it would be good to also control some non-IKEA pendant lights with the same dimmer, in sync with the cabinet lights connected to the Tradfri - so, I created automations in Home Assistant corresponding to each of the actions the dimmer can perform and this is working fine. However, we've decided not to control the pendant lights in sync with the cabinet lights so it's now unnecessarily complicated. I plan to remove the automations and link the Rodret direct to the Tradfri again.
I understand that I can do this by following the IKEA procedure to pair the devices. But I'm also curious about the option in Home Assistant to bind devices.
Finally to my question - are these two methods to achieve the same result, or is IKEA pairing somehow different than Zigbee binding?
Zigbee devices have their pairing process defined on the device. It's just a method of generating a trust with a Zigbee network, so whatever method will end up with the same result.
Those IKEA devices have issues being part of multiple networks in my experience. Some are not even capable, so if that's your plan, expect problems.

I kinda badly want to fully switch to Linux in the short term but wanted to first properly test how different distros feel at these specs (and maybe try some basic gaming too); maybe someone that wants to do the same can find this post useful (I hope this is the right community to post to).
To do this I used QEMU, and had to edit the source code and recompile it to enable 240hz. Forcing higher refresh rates is surprisingly not that hard, I only had to edit a single line of code (hw\display\edid-generate.c, line ~390, set '75000' to '240000'). So far Mint, Fedora and KDE Neon work perfectly at that refresh rate (after adjusting mouse input polling rates), then I added a couple other nice features like shared clipboard and mouse device toggling (I tested q2pro and it wouldn't work with absolute mouse coordinates, and relative mouse was a pain to use in normal desktop browsing, so I had to find a way to toggle them if I didn't want to reboot the VM every time).

Yep my intention is to do that as soon as I switch, honestly the biggest obstacle for me right now is gaming (I'm unfortunately on an nvidia gpu so I'd get like 20% or more performance penalty with the drivers currently shipped for most distros, a little too much for me) hopefully it'll get even better
I did exactly that when I switched to Linux a couple of years ago. Took around a week to setup, it runs well enough, but you lose the use of your main gpu under Linux that way. I tried lutris for gaming under linux and quickly realised the games run very well via wine. O in my opinion the qemu windows with gpu passtrough is not really worth the hassle nowadays. All games I tried work just as well via wine/proton.

I use forgejo and it's expected to have federation eventually, but it would've been amazing for gitlab to have AP support. Hopefully in the future it might be picked up again.

Also: I can see a LOT of security issues with not having a centralized source of truth on what the commit hashes should be and so forth. is fedgit dot zip the source of truth for this app or fedgit dot ml or fedgit dot ca? Theoretically that is where signing comes into play but that gets back to: What advantage does a "fediverse" frontend have?
I think the federation was more about interacting with other instances. Like creating issues and pull-requests without needing to create a new account for every instance.
I think this would be useful, as reporting bugs on GitLabs can be annoying if you have to create an account first.

You don't know that, because you've never once heard what someone didn't say. Their time is limited too.
I always assumed it was more or less targeting the federation of issues/MRs.
The git side of things is already distributed as you said, but if you decide to host your random project on your own GitLab instance you'll miss out on people submitting issues/MRs because they won't want to sign up for an account on your random instance (or sign in with another IdP).
This is where a lot of the reliance of GitHub comes from, in my opinion.
I have most of my projects on either notabug or chiselapp (Fosil, not Git) and to this day I get e-mails asking for stuff or notifying about issues, so it's not like the "social" / "Hub" aspect of "GitHub" is needed.
Github's dominance comes from the network effects. Everyone's on github, so if you have your project on a different repo, you won't get as many visibility. If your project is on gitlab only and someone wants to report a bug, they need to:
Find your instance.
Create an account.
Deal with an unfamiliar interface
Create the ticket
Hope it gets seen.
Potentially forget about it, unless they set up notifications.
A Federated forge solves all of that.
You follow remote projects without having to create an account in the remote instance.
You open an issue on the remote forge without having to open in an account in the remote instance, and you do it from your local server.
If you have a PR ready, the remote instance gets notified.
It makes a lot easier to separate CI/CD from source management.
It makes a lot easier to separate source management from issue tracking.

That's what signed commits are for. Also, pull/merge requests and issues are sent to the origin instance, just like in the fediverse. Like now, you made a comment on a post on Fediverse@lemmy.world through your instance lemmy.zip. The same would happen with your comments, pull/merge requests, issue reports, and so on. There's no need for a "central authority".
Issues from people who can't even be bothered to make a burner account are almost never useful. And issue tracking that is not fed directly to passionate people who care about maintaining a project is worse than worthless.

The comparisons you're making are off base and it feels like you're mocking something you don't understand, while doing so with a lot of confidence. I'd suggest you either read an article, watch a video, or read the ActivityPub spec's intro. It isn't long and should help you understand the basics. Then you can move on the ForgeFed spec which is the ActivityPub extension for source forges. And you can always ask an LLM to summarise it for you if you really don't understand.

Running a federated GL is conceivably a set-it-and-forget-it like a lot of federated stuff already is, and you debug the glitches and patch like normal.

I hate to break it to you, that's your fault for making an assumption (and a bold one at that) or you're just quite naive. Most places that you sign up for will either have you agree to a Terms of Service, or they'll make you agree to the rules. I have even more bad news for you: Advertisements usually try their best to show only the "good" of what is being advertised (such as how an advertisement for a toy doesn't usually make it very clear that batteries are required to use it).

No, they might be angry that their comment was removed, but it's a pretty common understanding that moderators will remove content at their discretion, even if people don't necessarily agree with the decision.
I'm not sure why I'm even engaging in this, usually it's pretty clear when someone gets upset that their "free speech" (that they were never entitled to) is being violated that their intent is to spread hateful content.
Perhaps that isn't you, but nonetheless that is the group you're putting yourself in (even if unintentionally) whenever you ride under that banner.
It would also be worthwhile double checking what actual "Freedom of Speech" is and what it covers. Assuming you are referring to the US' first amendment, it has absolutely nothing to do with anyone other than you and the government (and even then it has its bounds).
As an example, let's say you're a writer for a newspaper. The government cannot take down an article that you write in which you criticize them (because that would fall under protected speech, unless you are making direct threats towards someone), but your boss could absolutely say "No way, we're not publishing that" as they are not a government official.
This doesn't even just include "Freedom of Speech", as another example, with the right to assembly you can publicly assemble and protest the government - but it wouldn't allow you to start a protest on someone's private property.

Most terms of service are very similar and are broken down into categories usually. Finding the content and privacy sections doesn’t take long and once you read a few they all become easier to understand.

That was the big problem on sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit. They advertise themselves as a public square. Then they would censor speech in various ways unknown to the speaker. A lot of people in this thread don't understand that. In case you are not familiar, sounds like you are, Martin v. City of Struthers (1943). I know these sites aren't just U.S. citizens, so a lot of the comments come from foreigners who only familiar with their limited freedoms their government allows them.

Recently switched a system from arch to tumbleweed. After another required manual update intervention. So far I quite like it. And if as claimed is stable enough to not have me having to troubleshoot updates. I will likely be switching several more. It's not quite as on the bleeding edge as arch. But it still has plasma 6.4 and blender 4.4 etc which are the big things for me.

Unfortunately, the "block" isn't really a block on Lemmy, it's barely a mute and that goes for user and instance blocks. Because dessalines refuses to implement a proper system (unsurprisingly). It's been 4 years since "blocks" rolled out
In any case it still allows their toxicity and misinformation to spread, trolling new users who come here unaware of the need to block and such

But, on PieFed, at least block means block, blocking lemmy.ml or any other instance on PieFed blocks comms and users alike and blocking an individual user on PieFed means they won't be seeing any of your comments or posts. So none of this mute BS on Lemmy where problematic users can still brigade your content and comment "behind your back" on your posts/comments without your knowledge
Seemingly for the first time, the Bazzite gaming-focused Linux distro has appeared on the Steam Hardware Survey. Well done to the Bazzite team for making such an amazing distro for gaming (and now just general usage as a while too)! Been my main choice for going on a year now for my general use distro, and I haven't looked back.
Lag? And discontinuous of stuff like X11 and PulseAudio. They even tried to pass removal of 32 bit packages recently. It may not sound important for 64 bit systems but actually a lot of apps (especially proprietary ones) are in themselves 32 bit.
You only have to replace it if the disadvantages affect you. Usually they affect old hardware, specialist hardware and NVidia GPUs. If you have none of those, you should probably be fine.
