It shouldn’t, you probably have a modern setup. Super high level is that: UEFI is like a mini os on the mainboard, replacing the old bios chips that were very limited, including on partitions on disks: max 2 physical (whereby the 2nd was used to embed “soft” partitions), and any boot code was confined to cramped spaces, below certain amounts of blocks and cylinders etc, hence the peculiar /boot partition. UEFI had to support this of course, but it’s at best like wearing clothes that you accidentally washed at the highest temperature: bleak, way too tight in uncomfortable places and prone to tearing.

I washed mine in a standard washer/dryer for about two years before a pouch tore and it began to leak weighted material. I am still unclear if it was a washer/dryer damage issue or if my new dog with God damn demon nails poked a hole in it. I honestly think it was the dog.
Most should be machine washable in cold water on the gentle/delicate cycle without any addons (no fabric softener, certainly no bleach) before tumble drying on low, which you may need to do twice and could also be where I fucked mine up (I dried it on Hellscape Hawt one time.).
Regarding your mention of an outside or slipcover, mine did not have that. If you do not see an obvious set of snaps or zippers, do not assume that your does either.

From what I've read, most older recipes are 2:1? And most modern recipes are 1:1? What do you use?
I use 2:1 when I bother to heat it in a pot, but recently I've taken to just filling sugar and boiling water into the intended container and shaking it every couple of minutes, and that method leads to somewhat more watery syrup. Still more sugar than water, though.
If a recipe needs more dilution, you can always add water while mixing the cocktail. I do that pretty often.

I have a Gigabyte motherboard, and the only issue I've run into—even with Arch—is this specific B550 board uses some third-party sensors, and the necessary it87 module doesn't load and isn't included by default. This makes it impossible to utilize tools like CoolerControl to manage fan curves.
Thankfully, some kind soul manages a DKMS module via the AUR, in spite of both Gigabyte and the IC manufacturers being less than helpful.
No issues with Debian / Ubuntu on many laptops since early 2010s, mostly with Intel graphics. I had a Vostro 1400 with Nvidia and it also resumed fine, but that was 2009-11 so the experience with the Nvidia driver from that time is likely irrelevant.
System76, Framework, even Dell officially supports Ubuntu in limited cases.
I'd just try a couple different distros and see which one has the fewest issues for you. If you like, you can pay for official support from Dell or Canonical. If you do identify an issue in a supported scenario (Ubuntu version + device model) they will actually help you troubleshoot and resolve the issue. RHEL is the same if you want to pay a bit more.
I'm running CachyOS with Gnome, Gigabyte motherboard, AMD processor, closed Nvidia drivers, and sleep works just fine. I haven't had any issues in that regard.
Could try Fedora based like Bazzite or just regular Fedora. Obviously a sample size of 2 isn't saying much, but Bazzite is less buggy with the hardware on my HP laptop, and my destop with an Nvidia GPU.
Before asking for another distro, you should figure out, what is the root cause of the trouble you observe. Usually sleep/wake up under Linux are highly hardware dependent. Even the SteamDeck, which has payed first level hardware support by Valve, has sometimes trouble waking up properly after sleep, at least in desktop mode. Good luck!
A problem with PikaOS is that the log files seem bad or I couldn't find the right one. Lots of seemingly amateur errors in log (no permission for system to write to system) that don't seem to lead to imminent crash. Log files don't pick up having to hit power switch maybe.
My main question was the easy "did a distro switch solve sleep issues for anyone"? Maybe switch to Mint would at least have more google hits on solving issues? Someone downvoted the "switch to x11 graphics driver before sleep" try, and I'm losing patience on tracking it down as you suggest.
Not sure if it is applicable, but wouldn't it be an option to use the Fedora Workstation Live CD, mount your swap partition into the live system and send it to sleep via SystemD?
This should give you feedback with a fairly recent kernel and Gnome has (at least for me) been the desktop option with the least amount of bugs I encountered.
Waking up from sleep is of course part graphics card/drivers, and BIOS code. My husband had his share with his nvidia card crashing the system when coming up from sleep under Wayland, but I believe these things have been mostly ironed now. However, if you have a buggy BIOS, you're out of luck. I've had such a DELL laptop, latest firmware installed, and no matter which distro I tried, it wouldn't wake up from sleep properly. So, if that's your issue, there's not much you can do, apart from getting compatible hardware. There are hardware lists of compatible hardware in some places, including archlinux's wiki i believe.
It's probably more to do with hardware than distro. That said, using major distros is more likely to win. FWIW I've used fedora and voidlinux on my 3 Dell laptops over the last 12 years with nary a problem. One of them had nvidia but I used nouveau.
I use Fedora with KDE and never have issues. Though I no longer have NVIDIA cards in any of my computers. The drivers suck on Linux in general and were the cause of many of my previous issues with Linux overall.

Exactly. MBR is pretty much not used at this point except on legacy hardware where EFI is not supported. As mentioned, it's also unreliable in this particular combo.
Removing this does two things:
1) Ensures the most reliable way of installing is enforced by default
2) Removed untested and entangled bits of code that allows this to work (though the volume of code removed won't be huge)
And that is still largely true - I’m still running XFCE with xorg on Debian, and I think the only issue I’ve had was Waydroid.
Will there come a day where what you say is true? Yes.
However, right now, a more apt example to convey your point is systemd; that’s true for most distros with a lot of community support. Even then, its hold isn’t absolute - Alpine seems like the most livable non-systemd distro, though I could be wrong.
As I’ve commented elsewhere on this post and others have said, this is a change that affects pretty much no one. I didn’t even know MBR (legacy BIOS) partition tables on UEFI boot was possible, honestly.
By no longer putting in the effort to maintain this bit that no one uses, work can be put to something someone uses.
Also, with Linux, specific distros can get encrapified (kind of happened to Ubuntu), but as others have said, there’s usually always another distro to jump to at worst.

For those panicking about it, this is not something you need to worry about. Here’s what this actually does:
Enforce the use of GPT partition tables for all UEFI-based Fedora installations for x86 architecture. This removes support for installing Fedora in UEFI mode on MBR-partitioned disks on x86 systems
You probably have already been using GPT on your UEFI system since you had a UEFI system. Even if you somehow were using MBR, this probably; 1. Won’t break existing installations, as it’s merely support for installs of this type 2. Would not be a problem even if somehow the broke existing installs, as it’s not difficult to convert MBR to GPT.

How did you format the USB drive? I could never get a usb to boot on my Surface Go unless it was made in Rufus using Windows. I believe you need to format the USB (with no iso) as an unbootable disc with fat32 and GPT and THEN put the iso you want on it. (Two separate operations on the same USB stick.)
There's also a custom Linux Kernel just for Surfaces that you can use for better driver compatibility.
Edit: I see you mentioned Ventoy. I got some ISOs to work with it, but most didn't. Then again, I couldn't get some ISOs to work with Rufus either.

Es gibt einen wesentlichen Unterschied, der von allen Forschern, die sich mit der geschlechtsspezifischen Wirksamkeit von Frauen- und Männernetzwerken auseinandergesetzt haben, beschrieben wird: Frauenbünden fehlt häufig eine relevante Anzahl an Alpha-Mitgliedern – also Entscheiderinnen, die bereits in Machtpositionen sind und insofern die anderen Netzwerkmitglieder mit nach oben ziehen können oder durch ihre Multiplikatorinnenfunktion einen messbaren Benefit für die anderen Frauen im Netzwerk erzielen können. Das ist insbesondere bei den sogenannten Old Boys Networks (als Beispiel etwa der Andenpakt der CDU) anders. Wobei gerade dieses Beispiel zeigt, dass ein Männernetzwerk mit wichtigen Entscheidern allein noch nicht wirksam ist – und von einer einzelnen Frau durchaus "besiegt" werden kann. Generell haben Frauen schlechtere Chancen, Mitglied in einem Old Boys Network zu werden. Man muss hierzu mit den zumeist älteren und männlichen Entscheidern befreundet und bekannt sein – und diesen Entscheidern sympathisch sein. In der Regel basieren die stark wirksamen Männernetzwerke auf informellen Seilschaften, die ohne Rahmen und nur auf Sympathie und Ähnlichkeit beruhen.
Networking haftet immer noch ein eher schlechtes Image an. Besonders Frauen halten sich zurück. Dabei sind Netzwerker besonders erfolgreich im Job. Was machen die anders?

Błaszczak said that PiS would submit a bill to parliament introducing a temporary ban on entry to Poland for third-country nationals from “specific countries outside Europe…whose citizens illegally cross borders”.
Previously, on Monday, PiS party leader Jarosław Kaczyński had called for an “immediate ban on entry to the territory of Poland for people from the Middle East and North Africa”.
PiS has not yet specified which Middle Eastern and African countries would be included in its proposed ban. It says they would be selected based on analysis of data showing which nationalities most often cross borders illegally or are transferred to Poland from Germany.
A government information campaign discouraging people from trying to illegally enter Poland was recently launched in Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, Iraq, Pakistan and Egypt, countries from which Poland has identified the largest numbers of people crossing the border from Belarus.
Since 2021, tens of thousands of migrants and asylum seekers – mainly from Asia and Africa – have tried to enter Poland from Belarus, with the encouragement and assistance of the Belarusian authorities.
In response, Poland has heavily fortified its eastern border with physical barriers and electronic monitoring. The government also recently banned asylum claims by people crossing from Belarus. Those measures have led to a dramatic decline in the numbers entering via that route.
In his remarks on Tuesday, Błaszczak made clear, however, that PiS’s proposed entry ban was designed to address the issue that has recently caused most controversy, which is Germany’s policy of sending back to Poland thousands of migrants who crossed the Polish-German border illegally.
Many of those sent back are Ukrainians. Others are non-Europeans, often from Asia and Africa, who have either claimed asylum in Poland – and therefore must remain there while their applications are processed – or have simply passed through it after entering the EU irregularly.
“After the introduction of this [proposed] law, Polish border guards will be able to prevent citizens of these countries from entering our territory,” said Błaszczak. “So those who are today being transferred from Germany by the German authorities, or who are trying to cross from Germany to the Polish side, will not be able to do so.”
The migrant returns carried out by Germany take place under a combination of EU regulations, bilateral agreements with Poland, and the border controls that Berlin reintroduced in 2023. Earlier this year, Tusk declared that Poland may stop adhering to such agreements.
However, some Poles have sought to take matters into their own hands, organising self-declared “citizen patrols” – some of them hundreds strong – at the German border to monitor and prevent migrant returns.
Błaszczak said that PiS politicians will be visiting the German border to make clear that “we support the border defence movement”, which he described as “Polish patriots who took matters into their own hands when Donald Tusk’s state abdicated [its responsibilities]”.
He also pledged that the party “will provide support to those who are persecuted by the current authorities of our country” for undertaking such actions, reports the Polish Press Agency (PAP).
Earlier this week, Tusk and interior minister Tomasz Siemoniak criticised the actions of the citizen patrols, saying that they are disrupting the work of border officers and spreading false claims about the number and types of migrants being transferred by Germany.

Let's be clear about something; climate scientists almost universally agree that there is no such thing as "winning" or "losing" the fight against climate change (Suzuki, for the record, is a zoologist, not a climate scientist). The battle against climate change is about mitigating harm. The worse we do, the more harm there will be. But there is never a point where it is "too late". That is completely, utterly wrong. Climate scientists are talking about the physical concept of the tipping point, which is observed in nature and also comes out of their models. In climate, it's the point at which reversing a change that originally happened over decades would take thousands of years. My point is, tipping points are absolutely not an arbitrary thing. They are very solid predictions based on the physics of the climate. I think it helps to look at other problems caused by fossil fuel use. Higher CO2 concentrations make breathing air worse. Ocean acidification kills fish etc.
I think the bigger impact is thinking about changing weather patterns long term leading to new and larger deserts in the centres of continents and regular, massive storms on the coasts. That’s a changing climate beyond “everybody is a few degrees hotter” that is implied by global warming. CO2 isn’t going to effect breathing, but does cause acidification.

The +1.5C threshold is a somewhat arbitrary line designed around tipping points. The tipping points themselves are not imaginary/arbitrary. Forest fire spread increase. Methane defrosting. Polar melting path certainty. All of these increase GHGs and warming. Hurricane intensity+drought+intense rainfall events destroying property values is somewhat of an economic tipping point starting to affect some right now.

Even if we intentionally released as much co2 as we could all life on earth is not at risk. And who knows maybe there's even a small adaptable mammal or 2 that gets out and evolves enough for a second attempt at sapience.

What I am saying is that this company is facially evil. They are not even putting on much of a show otherwise. They are likely violating all kinds of laws at different levels.
Any government can place laws, regulation and boundaries on the actions of companies which are housed within it. If you scroll up I linked to a federal department which does just that. Theymake decisions about enforcement. I think it would have been possible at any time over the history of this company for the federal government to make use of the tools at its disposal to prevent some horrors from taking place. Not doing so was and is a choice. This is a giant company and even if you or I just learns of it this week, the federal government has been aware of it for the whole time.
The other person was making a joke about Carney's euphemisms. I think the government as a whole institution is to blame and PM is a component of it.

I think I was just pigeon-holeing myself in regards to this exact situation and how silly I found it that people were happy to blame Carney specifically within hours of a story (about a private company doing evil) getting published, literally less than a few weeks totally of them specifically doing this particular evil.

Let me know if Carney ever does anything about this after any amount of time... Other than offer them a contract, give them a business grant, or adopt some international policies that assist them in their evil deeds. Somehow I don't think time is the limiting factor.

That timeline is horrifying, as is their LinkedIn feed. They seem to position themselves as a private militia for corporate interests. If the Canadian government had any spine whatsoever they would seize all of their assets immediately.
It appears that they are operating in the open without any effort to obscure. If people paid attention to his history, yeah, they'd see it. What Carney did at the Bank of Canada and his various comments there are pretty telling.
The 2008 financial crisis, we avoided the worst of it because Carney and them were 'slower' to roll out the same dangerous lending practices that we saw down south, but they were still going forward with them -- we just had less exposure at the time the US popped, so they were able to quietly prop up the big banks (and just the big banks, they let the smaller ones figure it out themselves) using the CMHC. Canada's small FIs, Credit Unions and such, got through it without a scratch, because they weren't in to risky convoluted mortgage block trading, and had various safeguards in place already like a shared liquidity pool. Carney's reaction to Canada doing so well in 2008, was to demand that the industry align more with the international standards which had allowed for those issues to occur. Things like the shared liquidity pool were dismantled as a result. Fast forward, and Thiel and his buddies pop SVB -- and suddenly regulators are making noise like "Maybe banks and FIs should have some kind of shared liquidity pool for this sort of issue!". Carney's comments at various events also displayed a blatant lack of understanding for the smaller financial industry players in Canada -- likening Canada's credit unions to spain's private banks (which were run by oligarch-ish families, with zero underwriting due diligence).
The guy trusted the international community hierarchy / structure, more than the Canadian system. He trusted that hierarchy even after it had failed, while the Canadian approach had more success. He forced Canada's FI's to align with worse-practices, just because it aligned to international norms. He is not pro-Canada, nor is he pro-small business.
Huh, so apparently the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) is paying GardaWorld around half a billion dollars per year to do security screenings in over half of our airports.

That last one always pisses me off. "It just gets out of my way". Who sits there and interrupts their thought process because a window animation they've seen a thousand times before happens again?

Xbox was the only Microsoft product that I liked, paid for and used. I don't use Windows or Office -except when mandated at work-, but I've had the Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox One S, and Xbox Series S. I have over 300 owned digital games on Xbox. I decided to move away from Xbox a year ago, I never used Steam before Autumn last year, and now I game on the Steam Deck more than anything else. The writing has been on the wall for a few years now though, so this news isn't surprising. I still wanted to get an Xbox Series X to keep playing the digital games I collected over the years and was waiting for a price cut but they went and raised the prices instead.

Lemmy.ml is an instance run by admins who are hardcore tankies and will enforce their ideology on their instance through various means from allowing (and pushing it themselves) propaganda (Such as Russia being justified in some way to invade Ukraine) and known propaganda outlets (Like RT) to removing content on their instance critical of their favored authoritarian regimes such as Russia or China and even banning users for such speech or speech critical of them if it's off their instance (Just like the Reddit mods of ol!).
If it was just some random instance it would have been defederated from long ago like the rest of the "Tankie Triad" (Hexbear and Lemmygrad), but they've positioned lemmy.ml as the "flagship" instance and abused that position and influence to become large enough to keep other instances from defederating from them.
Which I believe is harmful to the Lemmy-verse's overall growth and outside reputation. I have seen it come up before on Reddit threads (and other testimonials from people who came back and tried it again) that "They tried Lemmy but it was a bunch of tankies and went back to Reddit"
I don't know about you, but I'd prefer Lemmy to not end up with the reputation for being "Tankie Central " or even worse "Voat 2.0".

I've been thinking about this a bit since I read it this morning, and I think the only reason they were able to get rid of STV is because it was only STV for Calgary and Edmonton. With a single party still able to sweep the rural ridings, they were given solid majority governments, which shouldn't be the case with "real" STV.
I have no idea how we'll get either half of the LPC/CPC to enact STV, when FPTP has them oscillating between consecutive usually majority governments, but I expect STV will be hard to get rid of once we've had a single election with it. Not much incentive for minority partners in a coalition government to accept moving back to FPTP, right?

One recent study indicates that 78 per cent of Canadian students have used generative AI to help with assignments or study tasks. In China, authorities have even shut down AI apps during nationwide exams to prevent cheating.
The support structures and policies to guide students’ and educators’ responsible use of AI are often insufficient in Canadian schools. In a recent study, Canada ranked 44th in AI training and literacy out of 47 countries, and 28th among 30 advanced economies. Despite growing reliance on these technologies at homes and in the classrooms, Canada lacks a unified AI literacy strategy in K-12 education.
Without co-ordinated action, this gap threatens to widen existing inequalities and leave both learners and educators vulnerable. Canadian schools need a national AI literacy strategy that provides a framework for teaching students about AI tools and how to use them responsibly.
AI literacy is defined as:
“An individual’s ability to clearly explain how AI technologies work and impact society, as well as to use them in an ethical and responsible manner and to effectively communicate and collaborate with them in any setting.”
Whether you think AI is a good or bad thing, the fact is it’s here. AI literacy enables students to make safe and informed decisions when using AI, preventing habits that compromise academic integrity.

Any use of Ai in its current form is not responsible or ethical. It’s an environmental disaster and threatens to harm the collective intelligence of every citizen.
Ai is another way to lower the intelligence of the general population and keep them under corporate control.
What intelligence is there, we can't even build homes for people given the overbearing regulation by mouth breathers. AI has the potential to eradicate all this bureaucracy.
Calculators also made people dumber, but the world goes on with technology elevating peoples ability to be productive despite being dumber. Trying to stop technological progress is never going to be a good thing, you can scare monger all you want that it will turn us all fascist but youre no different than those complaining about cars or the internet.
The technological progress LLMs represent has come to completion. They're a technological dead end. They have no practical application because of hallucinations, and hallucinations are baked into the very core of how they work. Any further progress will come from experts learning from the successes and failures of LLMs, abandoning them, and building entirely new AI systems.
AI as a general field is not a dread end, and it will continue to improve. But we're nowhere near the AGI that tech CEOs are promising LLMs are so close to.
Learning about how AI works and what it is/isn't good at, is a good thing? It will most likely make kids use generative AI less, and be careful about what they use it for
People who are pro-AI seem so weird and dystopian, people who are anti-AI seem logical and reasonable, but my employer requires us to use AI, and I've even been forced to work on multiple AI projects recently. It does seem it's unavoidable unfortunately, but honestly Copilot has given me some of the most useful autocompletions I've ever had, especially for tedious things like logging, and I've had good luck with ChatGPT assisting with tedious things as well like writing both scaffolding and queries. Considering all of that, I'm torn on AI. I am afraid of the consequences of AI, the fallout of all of it, but I also do find AI/LLMs useful in my day-to-day job and I'm required to use them for my day-to-day job as well.

An Iranian woman in Diamond Bar, who supports President Trump, was detained by federal agents due to immigration issues stemming from a past conviction.
"At that time, I was pregnant with my first kid," she said. "I lived in a two-room apartment … it was an OK building, but it was small for us."
[She] went to an online portal, entered her income and requirements, and was ranked alongside thousands of other residents. Soon, she was assigned a new apartment: a three-bedroom unit in a brand-new building, adjacent to Vienna's Central Station.
"I love it. It's in the middle of Vienna," she said. "A lot of young families moved in at the same time…. There's a big campus here, with a kindergarten and primary school. There's dancing classes, and a boulder bar, and a huge park."
[She] wasn't desperate to find housing. She and her partner earned middle-class incomes. But in recent years, Vienna has become renowned among housing experts for its model of social housing, which provides heavily subsidized rental units to more than half of the city's two million residents.
The key is taking profit out of construction (at least 96.5%), and a robust government that isn't afraid to impinge on the private sector.
I would love to see something like this in Canada, but I don't think our politicians (or electorate) have the guts.
You can't build high rise due to zoning, social housing isn't a solution it's a work around, to the problem of severe urban sprawl coupled with 1960s infrastructure and mass immigration.
.ml is not much different than the rest of the Triad, continued federation with them is continuing to allow them to spread toxic misinformation and behavior across the Threadiverse.

And for anyone asking "Why are we boycotting/blocking lemmy.ml?" Here's a quick recap:
Lemmy.ml is an instance run by admins who are hardcore tankies and will enforce their ideology on their instance through various means from allowing (and pushing it themselves) propaganda (Such as Russia being justified in some way to invade Ukraine) and known propaganda outlets (Like RT) to removing content on their instance critical of their favored authoritarian regimes such as Russia or China and even banning users for such speech or speech critical of them if it's off their instance (Just like the Reddit mods of ol!).
If it was just some random instance it would have been defederated from long ago like the rest of the "Tankie Triad" (Hexbear and Lemmygrad), but they've positioned lemmy.ml as the "flagship" instance and abused that position and influence to become large enough to keep other instances from defederating from them.
Which I believe is harmful to the Lemmy-verse's overall growth and outside reputation. I have seen it come up before on Reddit threads (and other testimonials from people who came back and tried it again) that "They tried Lemmy but it was a bunch of tankies and went back to Reddit"
I don't know about you, but I'd prefer Lemmy to not end up with the reputation for being "Tankie Central " or even worse "Voat 2.0".

Because individual blocks, be it for a user or instance, are not blocks. It's a barely functioning "mute", and is likely the way dessalines wants it since it was implemented this way 4 years ago and not a peep on fixing it since. Even now as they barrel towards a 1.0 release, nothing.
The only true block on Lemmy, is defederation or site bans (for individuals)
Even if it did work as expected, it still allows their toxic misinformation and propaganda to spread throughout the Threadiverse. Scaring away new users and making it look like we "accept" it because there's ever decreasing push back to it
.world has not defederated from Lemmy.ml, I really wish they would, being the largest it would be of huge boost to the health of the Threadiverse

Thanks for the heads up. I’m surprised that the support channel/community on .world doesn’t have a post requesting outright defederation from .ml. I’ve searched through nearly two years of posts there but found nothing substantial.
I don't think it was on the support comm, but they did respond on a thread about it once on why they don't defed from them like they did the other 2.
It boiled down to 3 things: big comms, official Lemmy support comms and the fact the devs rolled out instance blocking tools
The 1st one, I'm hopefully solving with my cross-posting and calls for boycotting, the third one is by calling attention to the fact that it doesn't work as one would think. Pretty sure everyone thought block meant block when it was being discussed.

Haselnusshack, mit etwas Öl rösten gehackte schwarze Oliven braten gekochte Nudeln, z.B. Fussili (wichtig ist, dass die Nudeln so klein sind, dass man sie mit dem Löffel essen kann) ordentliche Portion Parmesan o.Ä.
Alles mischen, mit Löffel essen damit Oliven und Nusshack auch zusammen mit Nudeln und Käse in den Mund kommen. Schmeckt ziemlich gut und ich liebe die Textur.
Mit dem Öl vom Braten/Rösten und der Feuchtigkeit der Nudeln (sie sollten nicht so lange getrocknet sein, dass sie zusammenkleben) geht das schon. Ist aber schon Teil der Textur, dass es trockener ist im Vergleich zu einem Nudelgericht mit einer richtigen Sauce. Hab aber auch schon öfter eine halbe Portion Nudeln ohne alles gegessen (Kochwasser sollte dann gut gesalzen sein), wenn man sich das überhaupt nicht vorstellen kann ist dieses Gericht vielleicht nix für einen.

I got completely annihilated on Korean rice wine once. Tested like slightly sweet water. Ice cold, very refreshing. By glass number four, I was at stage 2 snot bubble. Something like 24% ABV and I was drinking water glasses of it
It is a little bit like vodka. It is served ice cold, tastes like mildly sweet water and comes in a beer-style bottle so people who don't know what it is drink way too much of it too fast and then get hit like a hammer.
Now I kinda want to try soju. I have yet to meet a drink with any appreciable amount of alcohol in it that doesn't taste like paint thinner smells to me. The only way I've ever been able to "not taste the alcohol" is if there's barely any in the drink.
If that's your metric just drink "flavored fortified wine" aka bum my wine like MD 20/20. It's really high alcohol content and super sweet to mask the poor quality.
I've tried wines like that before. I apparently have that gene where you super taste bitter and it just tasted like flat LaCroix mixed with paint thinner.
That's gotta be a different gene, bourbon and rye taste like bitter wood to me (because of tannins from the cask aging) instead of the boozy vanilla that many people claim it tastes like, yet (decent) vodka tastes completely neutral to me. But I do believe that some people perceive alcohol itself as bitter while others do not.
Do you dislike bitter flavors in general, like coffee, tea, or salad?
Soju tastes kinda like vodka. I think sake is a good balance of "high enough alcohol" and "doesn't taste like paint thinner." Not a connoisseur by any means but a bottle of Kurosawa is cheap and tastes pleasant and fruity, and has around 14% ABV.
I probably won't be able to tolerate it then sadly. I'm super sensitive to bitter flavors that's seemingly why alcohol is always so unpleasant to me. I've tried so many drinks that even friends who barely drink at all say they can hardly taste the alcohol that all tasted just vile to me. Thanks though!
Can you elaborate on that? I've never seen anything about people adding water or other mixers into their sake (except the rare case of sake cocktails, which are definitely not the default way of drinking sake).
That said, I usually add water when I drink sake, but I do that because that's what I do with most of my alcoholic beverages; I never got the impression that this is actually the normal way of drinking it.
Yeah, just a few ml to take the edge off - it's not even about the alcohol for me (I happily sip 63% ABV rum if it's the good stuff), but about the unusual sake-specific flavor. I could probably sip a milder sake as-is, but we don't exactly have a huge amount of choice where I live.
Kinda sounds like it's just something you do, which isn't a bad thing in itself, but you wrote that as if it's the standard way to do it.
I'm mostly working off magazine articles, blog posts and books like David Wondrich's "Imbibe!". Most of the time, a simple web search with terms like "how to drink [beverage]" will yield results. e.g. for single malt whisky you can easily find articles and lengthy forum discussions over how much, if any, water to add, and plenty of articles write about what temperature to drink sake at and how to make hot sake. Though it's always possible that something is fairly common in Japan that western bloggers are not aware of.

No, she is saying your power is in pressuring MPs and other politicians to push back against C-2, push back on Carney being an American suck-up, supporting sanctions on Israel, boycotting products and services that support the genocide and Trump's deportation scheme, push companies to drop Gardaworld for their involvement in constructing the concentration camp, and on. The point is that all this bad doesn't take away what options we have as individuals to resist it.
If you could please refrain from spreading misinformation based on unfounded hunches, I would appreciate it.
