The generic answer for this is to get a refurbished thinkpad. Pretty much any T-series fit your needs and there's plenty of pre-leased corporate machines around which are refurbished and often have even a some kind of warranty.
I think what just_another_person means that Lenovo, specially at the beginning when they got the Think-brand from IBM years ago, tried to ride the brand and released sub-par laptops under ThinkPad -brand. At least some of the L-series were closer to what you could get from your local supermarket than actual work machines.
The brand-riding is now greatly less and the crappy ones generally aren't the models you can find refurbished from 3rd party retailer. I'm currently using T495 and it was ~300€ from a sale couple years ago, now you apparently can get L13 for less than that. And of course, when you buy used units do your homework and only make deal with a reputable seller, there's always an option that previous owner didn't treat the thing nicely.

Instead of just throwing random preferences out there, I'll help clarify the field of comments:
1) Thinkpads USED to be a safe choice, but Lenovo has been tainting that model line for a few years. Search and find specific models, and don't just buy because it has the Thinkpad brand. 2) Framework is 100% ready to go. They have a Refurb store where everything is cheap, but if you find one cheaper, get it. 3) Dell had a ton of Linux ready laptops under the XPS brand not long ago. Search and find out which to make sure, but they shipped with Linux installed. 4) I hate to say it, but HP Probooks were solid and shipped with Linux also. Terrible company, but they make decent enterprise products. They'll sell for cheap on eBay.
If you're in the US, refurbished thinkpads are probably the best option. Not so much here in Australia (but you mentioned GBP so perhaps you're in UK). Whatever. I bought a refurb Dell Latitude 3120 for AU$229

If you're able to code from a terminal, and care about longer battery life (my main concern when working from a coffee shop or elsewhere), I'd recommend getting a used android tablet, pry something from xiaomi or oneplus. You can find a decent model used for around that price with > 8 hour battery life easily.
Get a good stand, a solid bluetooth keyboard (logitech makes some great portable ones), and put termux on it (can probably handle light python locally).
If you need it to do CPU powerful tasks, use termux to remote into a VPS or your home server, and let a plugged in linux machine do the work so you can save your device's battery life. This is how I code at least.
I'm in the UK, and I've had decent laptops from rapidIT and ITZoo, both .co.uk as far as I remember. I can't remember which laptop I got from Rapid as it was a few years ago, but the first one had a faulty motherboard, and they swapped the laptop with no issues.
I had a Stonebook branded Clevo N750BU from ITZoo, which is an i7 based laptop, and Mint works perfectly on it. It's quite old now, so you'll probably get a newer one for your budget, but with a RAM upgrade it runs everything I throw at it. I use it for designing and editing logos in Inkscape and Krita, and for editing a website in html, css, and javascript, so anything newer should do it even better 😀

Thinkpad Thinkpad T480. Can find many within your price range. Great quality, most of it is replaceable including keyboard and display. Aside from actual hardware failure or damage, the one thing that gets hit long term with laptops, the battery, is super easy to replace and there is both an internal and external if you want really long life

T490s - i5 intel T14s - Ryzen 5 AMD
Both are tick all your requirements except for the numbpad, the T14s is definitely worth the extra money, though. It can even handle some medium gaming. Both have upgradeable nvme ssds. However the ram is soldered on the "s" versions of these laptops so find one with 16gb or more.
I've had great results with various refurbished Dell Latitudes from eBay over the years. I have a stack of about 5 or 6 of 'em and they've all run many mainstream Linux distros with fantastic out-of-the-box support. I pass 'em out to members of the household whenever a laptop is needed and they'll usually get the job done.
I'd just type in "Dell Latitude" on eBay and filter by price and such. I suspect any model with an i5 and 8GB RAM oughta be fine for light programming work. I've found sellers with high ratings (like 97% or higher) and thousands of sales are pretty reliable (and tend to have return policies in case you get a lemon). Just test all the hardware (webcam, microphone, headphone jack, USB ports, ethernet, etc) as soon as you get it.
I've saved a lot of money over the years buying secondhand, and these machines have been running without a hiccup for years of casual use.

Okay, just from the pictures, let me say what I think is happening:
1) You're growing too many different kinds of plants in a small space. 2) You're growing Cannabis, which draws literally every sweet-sensing pest. 3) Those things on the underside of the leaves you posted are Ladybug larvae, and they are GOOD.
You clear this up in about a week with a few simple things:
1) Get a clutch of ladybugs from your local nursery or plant stores. This should be available almost everywhere in the US. 2) Although I don't want to advocate for this because I love local pollinators, get a pheromone trap for the stinging insects. They cost about $10, and don't lure honeybees, but WILL kill local carpenter bees and yellow jackets. 3) For the aphids, get a soap-based spray, or make it yourself. It's pretty much just dish soap and water, but there are guides online. Spray EVERY MORNING AND AFTER SUNSET. This plus the ladybug clutch will make quick work of the aphids. 4) I see you have Basil in containers, move that AWAY from the plants that are infested with scale or aphids. 5) Depending on where you live, your nursery's may sell Mantids. Get them. They are beneficial, but ruthless in eating and killing anything in their grasp, including wasps. 6) If you have wasps around, there is a nest nearby. Inspect your building awnings, trees, or under anything shaded and find that nest. It's not two doors over, it's within 100ft of where you got stung. Find it, set a pheromone trap around your plants (not where you think the nest is), then after a lot of them are dead, go find and remove the nests next.
Don't leave standing water around, and make sure that you stay on schedule with the soap spray. Most of this will be cleared in just a week.
Edit: also for the slugs and stuff, you're growing a lot of stuff in a mostly shaded area, so you're just asking for slugs. Line a general area around your plants with Diatomaceous Earth. It's cheap, easy to use, and doesn't harm anything that doesn't crawl. Also, organic.
Double edit: DO NOT spray this black bugs with the striped butts. Those will be ladybugs soon that eat all the aphids. They are good.

Those larvae pictures are already a bit older, maybe two weeks? They probably got killed by the ants or wasps, because I rarely see them around anymore. I also rarely see any other aphid eating insects anymore, only ants and ants carrying carcasses 🙁
Wasps fly a rather straight pattern back to their nest. Find the nest by using some food they like, such as a sugar drink, and see where they fly to when they leave. Move the container closer until you find the nest.

Learned Japanese on a whim so I could watch anime without subtitles. Now by complete coincidence I'm in Japan and not banging my head against the nearly insurmountable language barrier (Japanese people are really bad at English).
I decided to start learning French last year and have been essentially speed running it. Learning another language makes my brain happy (I'm fluent in 2 already).
When I was in high school, I convinced my parents to sign me up for Japanese classes on the weekend because the sequel to my favorite game didn't get translated. Didn't end up getting all that far in it, my ADHD/autistic ass had a hard time paying attention in class and I had too much actual schoolwork to keep up with so I kinda just didn't do the homework.
But last year I started getting back into it just for fun, and I am having a lot of fun learning. Helps that I can go at my own pace without any pressure from being in school anymore. Still a long way from 日本語上手, but I passed a N4 mock exam and I just ordered a shipment of books and manga to try and see how far I can get. Saving up to travel in a few years too.

At work I regularly need to take short notes. I like to fill the page to the full. But it gets messier and more complicated aa the day goes on. So I'd strike through and cross out notes I don't need anymore. The thing is, crossing things out triggers a feeling of making mistakes. So instead of crossing out I started using check-marks (Dutch-style)., which feels like a succes and is also a quick fun flourish to draw. So small annoyances have turned into small victories.

Because they are not, in fact, older than the universe. That is literally, definitionally impossible.
The age of objects are derrived from simplified equations that proximate real-world phenomina. They're mathematical models, not absolute facts. When an object appears to be "older than the universe", it can mean many specific things, like the acceleration of the expansion of the universe changes over time when most mathematical models do not account for that. It could mean the object is simply further away than we expect to be able to see. It could mean it's simply traveling away from us in some uniquely fast way.
Basically, it means the mathematical model used to derive how "old" the object is, is likely wrong in some way, or that the measurements taken may have inaccurate results, both of which are absolutely and wholly normal for science. Again, they're mathematical models, based on measured observation, not absolute universal truths. There are many, many, many ways data can both be gathered incorrectly or analyzed incorrectly, not even requiring anyone to make a mistake. Science at the fringe of knowledge is very difficult, and requires rigerous testing and validation before it should be trusted. NEVER trust clickbait BS, especially if it's not directly from a scientist's mouth.
We already know our mathematical models are inaccurate in several ways (see dark matter and dark energy for the obvious ones). We just need to figure out how and why they are wrong.

Blender is getting HDR on Linux via Wayland before Windows! This isn't by accident, but shows how creating a system with a different design creates better results for users and application developers.
Firefox is in this same boat too. It will get HDR support on Linux* sooner than Windows. Firefox currently only supports HDR on MacOS.
The latest alpha of the upcoming Blender 5.0 release comes with High Dynamic Range (HDR) support for Linux on Wayland which will, if everything works out, make it into the final Blender 5.0 release on October 1, 2025.

I've learnt to check the endeavouros forum before a kernel update (normal updates are fine), it can save you from having to chroot and tweak stuff... It takes 5 minutes to check against 2 hours to fix

The package archnews2 also provides an arch news reader. This issue was also announced in Arch forums before it was rolled out - I saw it in Lemmy.
But, yeah, you really do have to read archnews release notes. Frankly, it annoys me a bit - pacman should have the concept of breaking changes and show related news before upgrades. I think one of the news packages (maybe archnews2?) has a config setting that always displays news before upgrades, but it's only annoying because it is ignorant of whether the news item affects any given system, so it's often just noise; I think I turned it off because it kept showing me the same news every time.
It's the worst part of Arch, and it's poorly handled. I don't know of a rolling release that handles informing the user of, breaking changes better, though.
The good thing is it fails properly. This should not continue because it would break your system. The package ownership of those files has changed but the package manager would have to remove the current owning package then install the new owning package after in two separate transactions. Exactly. The article says that 90% of hardware doesn't run on it, but in reality, 100% of hardware doesn't run on it. Only Qemu supports it, which is an emulator (and very slow to emulate RiscV in my experience -- latest version we tried with my husband on a very fast PC).
The Orange Pi RV2 was the perfect introductory Risc-V SBC, everyone is going gaga for it, for being a good middle of the road solution for those who want to try Risc-V, and yet, Ubuntu won't support it (and even the current implementation is done by the Chinese, not by Canonical, so I wouldn't touch it).
So I'm not sure what they're thinking. My own conspiracy theory is that EITHER Canonical, OR Raspberry Pi (which are close geographically), are preparing RV23 hardware, so they want to undercut the competition that way.
When compatible hardware is available, it's expected that having packages built for RVA23 will have a big impact on performance. You can already see a big part of that with the vector (V) extension: running programs built without it is akin to using x86 programs without SSE or AVX. RVA23 is the first RVA profile that considers V mandatory rather than optional.
You might see a similar performance impact if you target something like RVA22+V instead of RVA23, but as far as I know the only hardware systems that'd benefit from that are the Spacemit ones (OPi RV2, BPI-F3, Jupiter) while that'd still leave behind VisionFive 2, Pioneer, P550/Megrez, and even an upcoming processor UltraRISC announced recently. The profiles aren't exactly intended to be used for those kinds of fine-tuned combinations and it's possible some of the other RVA23 extensions (Zvbb, Zicond, etc.) might have a substantial impact too.
Hardware vendors want to showcase their system having the best performance it can, so I expect Ubuntu's aim is to have RVA23 builds ready before RVA23 hardware so that they'll be the distro of choice for future hardware, even if that means abandoning all existing RISC-V users. imo it would've been better to maintain separate builds for RV64GC and RVA23 but I guess they just don't care enough about existing RISC-V users to maintain two builds.
Source : I have a Banana-Pi SBC banana-pi.org/en/banana-pi-sbc… and... it works, running Linux proper, with a desktop environment, which is in itself pretty cool IMHO but damn, you have to be patient. That being said "just" already being at that stage on economically affordable hardware is amazing. We are probably not far, say few years at most, with usable RISC-V chips for mundane tasks, e.g. text authoring, coding, Web browsing, but don't expect compilation of a browser, Blender, or gaming on this for few more years. IMHO it will go fast because it's catching up so the path is rather well laid down, which is much harder than innovating and pushing the envelope.

I guess it depends what you mean by "chip production".
AFAICT mostly via Chip War (2022) and reading a bit on the topic there are few bottlenecks, e.g chip design IP like ARM (UK) or lithography machines like ASML (NL) or high efficiency chip production like TSMC (Taiwan) but overall the grip from the US is mostly on democratization and scale with AMD, NVIDIA, Broadcom or even Intel, namely making a LOT of chips, not necessarily high end (some are) or mobile (also some), for a relatively low price. What I mean is that China is already claiming that they are producing about on-par IPS with e.g. Loongson.
So yes there are for sure incumbents based in the US that do not want RISCV and overall open architectures to make significant progress but is it fair to call them "the US" I'm not sure. Are they heavily leaning on US lawmakers to get their positions strengthened? Maybe. Maybe they do not yet do so simply because they don't believe it's a threat yet, nor it might be ever be.
I believe that in chip production you can lock production via innovation but also, like in other sectors, solely with the supply chain. ASML is powerful because they basically own their markets but also because who would contract with newcomers versus a very well established company that can provide all the insurances imaginable that they will indeed deliver on time a specific amount? Why risk it when you are already contracting with the leader?
Sure there is a potential innovator dilemma but what could prevent e.g. NVIDIA or Intel to switch to RISC-V if somehow they can dominate there too thanks to both their existing expertise but also supply chain stronghold?

France has announced a “historic” accord with New Caledonia in which the overseas territory, rocked by deadly separatist violence last year, would remain French but be declared a new state.
“A State of New Caledonia within the Republic: it’s a bet on trust,” the French president, Emmanuel Macron, posted on X on Saturday, hailing a “historic” agreement.
Receiving the signatories later, the president said that “after two agreements and three referendums, New Caledonia, through what you have signed, is opening a new chapter in its future in a peaceful relationship with France”.
Macron had called for talks to break a deadlock between forces loyal to France and those wanting independence. New Caledonian elected officials, as well as political, economic and civil society leaders, gathered near Paris to hammer out a constitutional framework for the territory.
After 10 days of talks, the parties agreed that a “State of New Caledonia” should be created.
Manuel Valls, the minister for overseas territories, called it an “intelligent compromise” that maintains links between France and New Caledonia, but with more sovereignty for the Pacific island.
The priority now is New Caledonia’s economic recovery.
Last year’s violence, which claimed the lives of 14 people, is estimated to have cost the territory 2bn euros ($2.3 bn), shaving 10% off its gross domestic product, he said.

As part of the agreement, New Caledonia residents will in future only be allowed to vote after having lived 10 years on the archipelago.

Most file managers I've encountered default to icon view. One of the first things I do is set the default to detailed list view. Might be a preference for seeing names and dates over many identical folder icons, or just an old habit from using Windows. But I'd be curious to hear about the benefits of icon view and why it's usually the default in Linux GUI file managers.
What does everyone else use and any reasons to prefer one over the other?
All jokes aside, its personal preference. If you're working in a dense file tree, you probably need the info that details view gives you. Icon view really only matter for media.
I work in a design industry that requires a lot of source files so I end up having to constantly switch. Lists when I’m looking for the relevant folder, or looking for a particular file based on name, or icons if I’m looking for something based on image. There’s no consistent way to switch between them with a keyboard shortcut among different OSs, either.
I have it on grid view :3.. just cause it can fit a lot more files into the same screen space
In list view I have to scroll to see all the files in my home folder, and in grid view it only takes like half of the available space, if I have the app maximized
I mostly prefer Detail view, but I enable Icon view in Videos, Photos, and Music folders so I can see previews.
I’m guessing most file managers have similar behavior, but on XFCE Thunar, I’m able to set detail as the default but have it remembery choice per folder.
I prefer details since it's easier for me to scan visually, with my eyes only having to go straight down, to find either a name, date, or size. Sorting I also find more intuitive. However, I prefer icon view for my pictures and videos folders
For some reason, I can’t ever find a view that feels like “list view” from Windows OS. That would be my preference. Detail view is useful in specific conditions—such as troubleshooting or in search results. As is icon view (mostly for images).
I use Krusader on Linux which I don't think has icon view.
When I have to use something else (eg Windows Explorer at work), obviously I prefer detailed list view. I like seeing things like the last modified date.
I think it heavily depends on the files one has to browes the most. I deal with text files all the time, so i dont need an icon to jump in my face telling me, that its a text file.
The media-, design people I know love the previews that icons give them, because its much easier to spot the image file, they are looking for while scanning through a directory
When I am not on the terminal, I use list/detail view all the time. In the details most of the time only last modification date is relevant to me. I always make the list icons one step smaller as the default and sort directories before files in Nautilus.
I don't need thumbnails. When I need to see pictures, I open them with the now new image viewer in Gnome and use the arrow keys to go through, if I am unsure what I am searching for. I most cases I go by file name.
The last time I found icon view useful was in Mac OS 9. There were three main characteristics that made it useful that no current systems have AFAIK:
The icon grid was tight (32 pixels) and you could either snap items to that grid or place them freely.
Window sizes and places were directly associated with folders. (There was no "browser-style" single-window mode.)
File names used dynamic spacing. Longer names would occupy multiple grid spaces as needed.
These factors meant that every folder had a consistent and potentially unique size, placment, and layout.
OS X took the Finder and either ruined or neglected everything good about it. Windows explorer has always been garbage. Never found a Linux file manager with a compelling icon view either (though to be fair, I've never looked all that hard). The lack of system-level metadata for layout kind of mandates an abstraction between a directory and its display.
I mean that an individual folder will always look the same (consistent), and also look distinctly different from any other folder (unique) if that's how you arranged it. So you could identify a folder instantly.
Everything in list view looks the same at a glance, and most file managers don't retain a folder window's size and placement. Modern macOS kiiiind of does but you have to fight it if you don't want a single-window browsing UI.

I hate the fact that I now question every interaction that seems a bit off - it seems such a stupid waste of my time and I'm afraid I might just end up blocking real people who happen to express themselves in a strange way - as a neurodivergent person I know how bad I would feel about being ostracized as 'too strange to be real'. Lemmy.ml is an instance run by admins who are hardcore tankies and will enforce their ideology on their instance through various means from allowing (and pushing it themselves) propaganda (Such as Russia being justified in some way to invade Ukraine) and known propaganda outlets (Like RT) to removing content on their instance critical of their favored authoritarian regimes such as Russia or China and even banning users for such speech or speech critical of them if it's off their instance (Just like the Reddit mods of ol!).
If it was just some random instance it would have been defederated from long ago like the rest of the "Tankie Triad" (Hexbear and Lemmygrad), but they've positioned lemmy.ml as the "flagship" instance and abused that position and influence to become large enough to keep other instances from defederating from them.
Which I believe is harmful to the Lemmy-verse's overall growth and outside reputation. I have seen it come up before on Reddit threads (and other testimonials from people who came back and tried it again) that "They tried Lemmy but it was a bunch of tankies and went back to Reddit"
I don't know about you, but I'd prefer Lemmy to not end up with the reputation for being "Tankie Central " or even worse "Voat 2.0".

You are correct that it’s not 0 though. Tbf it never is. To make it safer and extend shelf life you can add an acid at the end like 1-2tbsp black vinegar or rice vinegar after cooking. This will adjust pH enough to inhibit botulism spores further but again the risk still isn’t 0
Frying everything first, then pressure canning to get to 250 for several minutes puts it at what would be commercially safe and shelf stable. There's guides from culinary university extensions online, but that's the gist.
Store bought stuff goes through a much more rigorous process to sterilize the finished product. It'll be clear when you first open it, but open to mold and everything else once opened. That's why you always see the "Refrigerate After Opening" line on labels.

I say "similar" because I'm not sure if it's changed with time, but I'm having trouble finding and/or installing the mentioned dependencies such as libQt53DLogic.

Do you have some custom repos enabled? Seems like you're trying to update a package that has a dependency not available with whatever is in the default repos. Disable all custom repos and then see if it updates first.
... And at worst, actively making your bedroom less functional and more cumbersome to use. The arguments I hear in favor of it are completely asinine and I will address them one by one.
It makes it more comfortable to sleep in.
I have absolutely no idea where that comes from. Do you all sleep like Dracula? My bedding is usually tussled about within minutes of me laying in bed. Blankets balled up for knee support, one leg sticking out for temperature venting. I couldn't imagine sliding under the covers and laying perfectly supine like Vladimir Lenin.
It doesn't take much time, so you might as well do it.
I find any task not worth my time to be a waste, so unless it has a purpose, it is actively infuriating to do.
It looks nice. And an unmade bed looks lazy
Given that this is an entirely subjective reason, I can't exactly "disagree" with it. But if there was someone I trust enough to be in my bedroom, I'm not going to waste my time convincing you that I do not, in fact, sleep in my bed.
Not to mention that if you want to nap or even sit on the end of the bed, you have to make it again. It is an incredibly unstable artwork, making me avoid using my bed unless I really need to.
If you make your bed, I have no judgment for you. Just like people who fold designs into the ends of their toilet paper. I couldn't imagine caring about something like that, but it literally doesn't affect me at all, so go nuts.
But I think we should be honest and call it what it is: some kind of shameful cleaning ritual that is probably some vestigial military chore, and I want nothing to do with it.
I had no idea people past my grandmother's generation still felt compelled to make their bed... I thought we had collectively grown past the compulsion to do pointless tasks like this, along with other wastes of time like manually wiping the dishes or ironing everything including the dish cloth. Maybe that's just me, though.
(I'm not talking about doing it if you want to because you like it, only about the expectation that you should be doing it no matter what.)
