I like to imagine I'm not overly susceptible when it comes to marketing but maybe I'm just lucky most of the market doesn't cater to my childlike whimsy.
I'm less susceptible to marketing because I always have adblockers active (where at all possible)! Most people don't even see the fact that they subject themselves to ads as issues, even after you show them how easy it is to set up adblockers in a webbrowser.
But this kind of marketing, it can't be easily blocked ...
I found non-invasive ads exceedingly rare in recent years. I sometimes tried putting certain sites from creators I want to support on allowlists and always went back almost immediately because the ads were so invasive. I'd rather donate to content than view ads, even $0.5 is probably worth years of consuming most ad-paid content, considering how little ads actually pay per visitor.

One of those cocktail stirring spoons with a long, round handle. Makes stirring a glass full of ice extremely easier compared to normal spoon handles. In contrast, I found mixing glasses and cocktail shakers fairly optional (and those tend to be more expensive than $20 anyway if they're decent quality).
Oh man, there's this German company Beurer that makes simple equipment for medical home application. They make this sort of zapper thing, which is battery oper and it just heats the shit out of a little ceramic plate. Put that on a bug bite, it heats away the irritation. No more itch, no more venom in your body, just gone.
I am no longer careful around biting bugs. Keep in mind it's not supposed to work for stingers.

Broke single mom here. My H&M usually offers a buy one get one discount on boys’ cotton boxers, so whenever I buy a pack for my 12 year old son, I grab myself one as well and they serve pretty well as pajama shorts which I pair with a cheap oversized cotton tee.

Got myself a Dell Latitude ~~E4310~~ E6410 and Thinkpad T510 for free, both with discrete Nvidia graphics soldered to the mainboard. I've installed Linux on them and just went with the nouveau driver since the proprietary Nvidia driver for such old cards is no longer in the Debian 12 repo. Not going to do anything cutting edge on them, but it does leave me wondering:
I read that I could, with some effort, install the proprietary driver manually. Am I missing out on anything at all without them, or is nouveau mature enough and the graphics old enough that I wouldn't notice?
Is nouveau with old discrete graphics better or worse than having just Intel's integrated graphics?
Does power consumption vary significantly between nouveau and proprietary drivers?

Answering myself after going down a rabbit hole with the T510:
The dGPU is the NVS 3100M, which does have some level of hardware acceleration support under nouveau, so at least it isn't draining power for zero benefit. However, the dGPU is unable to go past its lowest power state without manually manipulating /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/pstate (I did not try to) and I suspect that this is what kneecaps 3D performance. There should be a marked difference, but I won't be doing any serious work on these machines, so I'm leaving everything as-is.
This situation is worse than having just integrated graphics due to the inherent power consumption of the GPU core while unable to benefit from higher power states and other optimizations.
Power consumption is probably less, but for much worse performance. At least it is a much better fallback than leaving at maximum.
A later variant has the BIOS option to disable the dGPU, mine is an early variant with no options
1) No, you can't install the drivers manually if they aren't supported. Nvidia does rolling driver releases removing aged out hardware, and the drivers do not support new versions with older hardware. Same with Windows.
2) Nouveau is the only option you have as far as hardware acceleration goes, but if these are laptops, you'd be better off just using the Intel graphics, because that's what's available, and they are very power efficient.
3) Power consumption is immediately bad once you engage the Nvidia hardware. Disable it in the BIOS. You won't have better performance in any meaningful way, just horrible battery life, especially since these are devices so old the modern drivers won't support the hardware.
Are you sure? I know the successor the T420 supports disabling the graphics. I dont think my 410 ever had it though. It's under display settings in the bios. Not sure about dell though, they might not have had it.
Unfortunately, I'm only given a choice between Boot Display Devices under that menu.
edit: Apparently, there is a menu for it if the T510 is a later model with Optimus support. Early dGPU variants like mine are forced to use the discrete graphics, even if the BIOS is hacked to reveal the menu.
Perhaps just uninstalling Nouveau and falling back to the Intel driver, if it's already installed, is sufficient? Or if that doesn't work, worst case OP could blacklist Nouveau and and update initramfs? I'm just guessing as long as the Nvidia driver is never actually active perhaps that's enough to avoid excess power consumption.
OTOH there isn't much harm in OP keeping Nouveau enabled and seeing how things go though I'm in agreement with you, on an older laptop there's not much advantage to be gained with the older Nvidia hardware.
don't know about that latitude, but for the thinkpad you'd do well to disable the nvidia graphics in BIOS setup. intel graphics is adequate for daily stuff and you can actually use the thing as a mobile device i.e. on battery,
Honestly, if these laptops also have Intel gpus, just use these to do your 2D work. And if you feel adventurous, then install the 390 drivers as secondary, only for the apps that need computing (e.g. Blender). For anything else, just use Intel, they work great for both video and 2D desktop acceleration.
In my experience, nouveau is painfully slow and crashes constantly to the point of being virtually unusable for anything. The developers agree, as in the last couple months nouveau has been phased out of Mesa entirely. More recent Mesa versions now implement OpenGL on Nvidia using Zink on NVK, and the result is quite a bit faster and FAR more stable.
If your distribution currently still ships a Mesa version which uses nouveau, I would personally recommend you just stick with the Intel graphics for now.
One thing to keep in mind about older versions of the nvidia proprietary drivers is that they will only work with specific kernel versions (and specific X versions—not sure about Wayland). Once the driver series your card needs stops being updated, you can't update your kernel without patching the driver. Assuming you have the skills to patch the driver, or someone who does makes their patches public.
I went through this song-and-dance with a very old laptop that had a card of the NV40 generation as its only GPU (no integrated graphics). Eventually I did install nouveau on it, and used it for several years without any issues.
NVS 3100M has codename NV50 (Tesla), so you can see the feature matrix. nouveau.freedesktop.org/Featur… nouveau.freedesktop.org/PowerM… So you can see almost other things has been done but the power management especially Automatic Reclocking still unfinished. So the feature set and stability should be fine and the performance will be bad.

I lost my esphome config in HA. I have several devices (sonoff S31) that show up in HA asking for encryption keys when I try to add them, which I don't have as old HA vm is gone. Is there anyway to reset them to base esphome config without disassembling and reflashing esphome? From what I can tell googling this, the answer is no, but thought I'd ask before I go ahead with that plan.

I ran Gentoo back in the early aughts; it was hella better than Redhat, but it felt like I was constantly compiling stuff, and new installs and upgrades could sometimes take more than a day. I don't remember what I jumped to after Gentoo, but I've never considered it again because of the lack of prehbuilt binaries. It seemed bitcoinish to have thousands of people wasting CPU cycles compiling the same package when it could be compiled once and redistributed.
Where Gentoo is nice is in the build flags: there's really no way to get around compiling yourself if you want to exclude optional dependencies, and Gentoo had that in spades. I am just not sure how much that's actually used anymore, but having binaries gives you the best of both worlds.

The most popular Linux distros are binary based. Gentoo upgrades build all new software from source. If you don't want long install times, don't usr one of these compile-everything-from-source distros.
There's no option to install Windows from source, and it doesn't really come with anything more than the OS, anyway, so it's apples yto oranges. Windows might not even be compilable on consumer hardware.
I dunno. I have a fair number of packages installed from AUR, and the Rust ones take forever to compile. CPUs may have gotten faster, but some popular languages have gotten much slower to compile.
I used Gentoo almost exlusively from like 2003 to maybe 2012 or 2013. I switched to Arch about then. But quite recently I made the switch back to Gentoo on my primary box and I'm happy I did.
Only thing I still need to do to really make it long-term sustainable for my particular use is to set up a build server on my network. My "primary box" is in the room where I sleep and I need it dark and quiet when I'm sleeping. Can't have MOBO color-shifting LEDs and fan sounds overnight. And I can't compile something like Chromium in less than the 15-to-16-ish hours I'm awake in a given day. (And I'd prefer to compile it myself rather than using a binary package.) Hence the need for a build server.
gentoo is less about compiling from source (I mean it can be about that too) and more about having a lot of choice and really nice tooling. it's in some ways a bunch more stable and declarative than arch. packaging your own stuff is even easier and you can just have most packages be stable while only running unstable version of the packages you explicitly care about 😀
So, I've been using Arch Linux ARM on Raspberry Pis for some "desktop systems" as well as for a janky-ass NAS solution, but that project is kindof dying. They go many months in a row sometimes without any package updates. It's wild. And when people ask WTF is going on and ~~offer~~ beg to be allowed to help in some way, the admins lock the thread.
So, I've been looking to switch my Raspberry Pi's to something that doesn't depend so much on some "project" out there to be able to continue to use.
The main Gentoo project fully supports ARM. And even if it didn't, it'd be a lot easier to use Gentoo without support than Arch.
Switching my main box (not a Raspberry Pi -- it's an x86_64 system) to Gentoo was basically for the purpose of trying out Gentoo again and evaluating whether I want to take the plunge and switch everything to Gentoo.
Aside from that, there's SystemD which is yucky. (Yes, I know about Artix, but when last I tried it, it didn't really feel "ready for prime time". It depends a lot on the main Arch repos.)
Plus, I do kindof like the idea of "more control over my system(s)". Configuring/compiling my own kernel (yes, you can do that on Arch, it's much less "in the spirit of" Arch) to make it as minimal as possible and disable everything I don't need. And of course USE flags are a plus if you want a light system.

I have / had some Ras Pis on it, but they wrapped up .. Pi0? a while back, so had to look at Raspbian (or whatever it's called now)... I'd not considered Gentoo for them... hmmm
Running a couple of Pis with Gentoo myself right now. It works as well as anything, although unless you're very patient you'll want to set up a binary package host (or distcc or something) to take the load off the Pi's somewhat anemic processor.
I have a soft spot for Gentoo, even though I haven't used it in years. It was one of my first experiences with Linux, since it was installed in one of the computer labs in college. I just remember that the windows had this physics jiggle effect when you dragged them around. I was so surprised that Linux had a more "fun" aesthetic than Mac or Windows did.
The “fun” aspect was what drew me to BeOS when it was near its heyday. What that thing would do in comparison to Winbloze at the time and the user experience in general was astonishingly more pleasant.
I remember their simple web server called Diner I had a website hosted on an older machine running Diner in my lab and it was just always on and when my office got DSL I felt like a king having that site up and accessible from anywhere, knowing it was on a box in my office and running Diner on BeOS.
I tried to make this logo from scratch in Blender for a wallpaper and kinda couldn't get the shape right because the angle of the actual logo is a bit weird.
Gentoo is great. I used it for a few years 20 years ago and I still think the package manager is the best I've ever used. I wouldn't use Gentoo today, but I'm really glad I went through the install and maintenance process. It didn't make me a guru, but I did learn a thing or two about Linux.
It sounds like a cool distro but I don't see any advantages compared to NixOS, aside from maybe the option to make it more minimal for constrained environments.
it's a lot less scuffed in some ways while still giving you a lot of control and a lot of tools for declarative system management. it's also waaay better documented. it's comfy.
Why does every one need to compare every distro to NixOS? We get it. It's neat. It's immutable. It's indestructible. But they are fundamentally different stuffs.
You can set it up to compile all your software yourself with the exact options you want, just like Gentoo. Not how most people use it, but still, NixOS can fulfill some of the same roles as Gentoo, they are very comparable.
I used Gentoo for ages.... it was the only distro I'd consider for my personal projects. Eventually, the amount of time it took to compile packages wore me out and I switched to fedora. Maybe I'm just old but watching gcc fly by for hours on end to compile X11 was neat but is not how I want to spend my Saturday anymore. Maybe I'll build out a VM for old times sake....
defeats the purpose? Also, like I mentioned, I used it ages ago....binary packages when I was using it weren't very common. I see they "went binary" a few years back... but then, why bother with Gentoo?
I'm in the same boat as you. Loved it for what it was on my old Pentium 2 (no internet). Learner a lot and had a blast. Not a daily driver now I have time constraints and binary packages lose what made it special. Happy on Arch for personal stuff and Debian for mission critical stuff.
What if you electroplated a plastic 3D print, and then melted off the plastic to leave just the metal behind? [HEN3DRIK] has been experimenting , with some impressive results.
For this work, [HEN3DRIK] prints objects in a special PVB “casting filament” which has some useful properties. It can be smoothed with isopropanol, and it’s also intended to be burnt off when used in casting processes. Once the prints come off the printer, [HEN3DRIK] runs a vapor polishing process to improve the surface finish, and then coats the print with copper paint to make the plastic conductive on the surface. From there, the parts are electroplated with copper to create a shiny metallic surface approximately 240 micrometers thick. The final step was to blowtorch out the casting filament to leave behind just a metal shell. The only problem is that all the fire tends to leave an ugly oxide layer on the copper parts, so there’s some finishing work to be done to get them looking shiny again.

I could see this process being useful for jewelry making. Traditionally, a custom pendant will be made in wax (these days that part can be 3D printed), put in plaster, burned out and then the cast metal is poured in. With this process, you could make your own re-usable metal molds.

I had the opposite situation several times. Conversations that involved fair quantities of alcohol derailed gradually, and afterwards I realized everyone's attitude had shifted in a more aggressive direction, including my own. So this wouldn't be a useful strategy for myself 😊.

For profit companies who have built walled gardens and wish to stay that way (reddit, tumblr, meta, linkedin, etc.) are at ethical odds with the ActivityPub world, insofar as people are trying vehemently to get away from these companies. But you'll notice for profit companies who are within the ideals of Fedipeople (for example Nitro, or Tuta, or Proton, or Mullvad) do not get griefed due to alignment of values and morals of the communities in question.
But the pitch wasn't "everything will be interoperable unless the company doesn't mean it or wants to make money or we aren't "morally aligned", whatever that means".
I don't understand how you can be a "walled garden" and still feature interoperability with a set of open source platforms under a pre-established set protocol. This is not an ethical problem or a problem of ideology, those two things are mutually exclusive.
This also sounds a whole lot like it disproves skrlet13's point on the heterogeneous Fedi where everything fits under different but overlapping bubbles. Seems to me you think Fedi has the one moral and ethical position on this.

Das Problem ist die Dauerpropaganda gegen die Interessen der Wähler, in den letzten Jahren massiv durch soziale Medien vorangetrieben. Stichwort "manufactured consent".
Social media kann auch manufactured consent unterlaufen. Deswegen sind die Amis z.B. so rabiat gegen TikTok vorgegangen.
Problem ist natürlich, dass privatwirtschaftliche Plattformen den gleichen "Filter"funktionen unterliegen, wie klassische Medien. Andererseits kommen die Plattformen auch schnell an ihre Grenzen, weil nicht ein paar dutzend, sondern Millionen Menschen kontrolliert werden müssen, immer wieder neue Wege zum Umgehen der Zensur gefunden werden, und nicht zuletzt die Zensur stärker auffällt, als bei klassischen Medien, wo diese für Uninformierte unsichtbar bleibt.

I use xtoolwait for programs I want multiple windows on different desktops for, like terminals.
I have three monitors; one is a status window, and the other two are grouped together in 8 different tags. Mod4+9 focuses the status screen, Mod4+[1-8] switch the other two monitors in sync to the other workspaces. It's all set up when I log in, including the creation of several terminals each running tmux from sessions restored by trum-session. The only thing I have to do is enter a password to unlock my secrets so background processes can start doing their thing.

It's an interesting filesystem, but you shouldn't use it at this point unless you know what the hell you're doing. You'll need to be able to notice, report and help resolve bugs, and under no circumstances use it for production or where you can't afford to lose some or all of the data on the partition.

Filesystems are incredibly antiquated, and while I don't agree with Kent's attitude, it is very important in the long run that filesystems catch back up.
As it stands just about any enterprise system you can poke a stick at is rolling their own customised file storage system, with a traditional filesystem typically being a misshapen dead weight sitting somewhere in the middle of it - existing because it's the only thing the kernel can integrate with.
It is pretty important that this trend reverses, and bcachefs was a big step in the right direction. Unfortunate that Kent is the way he is.

He posted on Patreon that there'll be a DKMS module. In my opinion, this should have been the option from the very beginning and upstreaming at a later point in time. It would have avoided a lot of drama. And now bcachefs is kind of tainted. The only way I ever see it back in mainline is there is an independent downstream of Kent's kernel that has no connection to him whatsoever.
Shame because I had very good experience with the filesystem. Definitely better than when btrfs was new. But Linus is unfortunately right; Kent is unable to follow agreed collaboration rules.
Unfortunate situation that could have been avoided entirely. Though I don't want to be too harsh on Kent. He spent a lot of time and work on bcachefs and it's his most important project. As such, he's more passionate about all of this. But the same can be said for Linus and the kernel on the other side.
The problem is that kent is a bullshitter and acted like he doesnt get what a feature freeze is. If he cant communicate with linus as to why his patch is actually bugfix then he cant contribute to the kernel.
It is great. I actually was a heavy critic of pulseaudio and stuck with ALSA on my desktop for as long as I could (until last year) by using Gentoo with USE="alsa -pulseaudio", the X-Fi's hardware mixing and automatic S/PDIF passthrough.
I tried to switch to pulseaudio a couple of times whenever I read one of those "it's good now, trust me bro" articles, but it wasn't, ever. It had and still has a huge amount of hard-coded, opinionated, often perplexing, behavioral quirks that made it feel like it just fought me every step of the way.
Pipewire on the other hand does not only have saner defaults, almost everything is softcoded with a great Lua plugin API. Don't like a default routing choice or want to automate your own, Wireplumber got you covered. Last year my X-Fi failed (or rather got flakey) and I had to choose between buying another used one or moving to PW. Almost everything worked out of the box on PW the way I like it, except a few details which were almost all covered by the settings. For the last problem, encoded streams not clearing the output, I wrote my own routing plugin.
The documentation for that API isn't necessarily the best, but it's easy to start from something small and work your way to understanding how to get the result you want.
If it's a pure DAC, it's default output will likely be between 1 to 2 Volts RMS. If your listening on iems or ~30 Ohm headphones that is gonna be crazy loud. It seems like you are using digital audio control to manage this (i.e., the audio level in your DE), which is possible, but certainly not ideal. It also is kinda bad for the audio quality, as you are digitally remixing it, and if you ever switch to high impedance headphones (or already have), the output current will be sub-ideal.
If I'm assessing your situation correctly, then this is quite easy to solve though. You just need a preamp! This will give a nice knob to control audio with much more precision and finesse. I know that both JDS Labs and Schiit Audio offer headphone amps with built in preamps in the USA. I can highly recommend the JDS Labs Atom Amp 2. In Europe your a little more limited, but FiiO has some nice options I think.
Of course none of this is necessary if you don't want audiophile levels of quality, but it would boost the audio quality (presuming your DAC doesn't have a proper preamp), and would certainly give you a tactile, wonderful knob.
I can certainly attest that my HD600s sound quite a bit better out of a JDS Labs Atom Amp 2 than out of just my DAC or—god forbid—my Mobo audio... They sound even better out of my vintage 100W Onkyo amp, of course, but really not by much. I am really impressed by the Atom Amp. I initially just bought it for travelling, but it has now basically become my main amp lol.

I love what Valve is doing for Linux, but longer term, the onus is on them to solve the 32-bit compatibility layer issue (a-la Proton for win-to-linux, as well as their upcoming x86-to-ARM layer).
Expecting all distros (who again, are staffed mostly by volunteers) to do this work separately (i.e. duplicating all that work), for all time, is a big ask.

No. Valve (the biggest offender) will have to make native 64-bit Steam before then, as will the remaining holdouts, so Linux distros will be able to remove 32-bit packages in a timely manner.
Removing then now will break too much to be worth doing.
I mean, I have more than one machine. Some can be closer to guinea pigs than others. In this case, it's a laptop that I don't keep anything unbacked-up on. Had Fedora on it for about 6 months and I cannot remember an update breaking anything for me so far. The previous machine I had it on was used less but I had the same experience. If you're mainly just web browsing on a machine, bleeding edge is good imo
There are and will always be distros optimized for running on everything. Fedora is a "move fast" distro, it's hard to move fast with a lot of baggage.
I think the last time I had a 32 bit CPU was around 2005 but I could be remembering that incorrectly. Supporting 20 year old hardware isn't always easy.
It isn't easy, but this isn't about the hardware. It's about the software packages. Tons of software meant to run on 32-bit hasn't been updated to run on 64-bit natively. Thus the burden of keeping a lot of packages that serve as backwards compatibility.

32bit only Linux apps are basically non-existent, anything with the source available and maintainers would have been ported at some point in the last 2 decades, otherwise they have very specific technical reasons for being 32bit only (like OBS iiuc), the source has been lost somehow, or it's a proprietary program where the company has no interest (e.g. Valve with Steam)
In the Fedora 31 release, the 32-bit i686 kernel and boot media are no more. Read more about the background on this change, and what to do about it, here.
To be a little more precise, Linux is still available for 32-bit x86, just not from the Fedora distro. The Linux project is just now dropping support for 486 CPUs, because the maintenance burden for a virtually unused system type is too high for the mainline. That still leaves 32-bit Pentiums and newer though.
Being able to run on everything is nice, but what you're actually asking for here is for a highly skilled (and rare) distro maintainer to dedicate substantial amounts of time to maintaining and testing thousands of packages on 32 bit systems in case someone wants to use it. It's not just like users get to click a button and voila, they can run more games than before.
If you really need to use 32 bit software, eventually you'll just have to manage it yourself because no one else is able to do it for you. That capability will almost never go away.
I don't think Apple is concerned with making every app and game work on their systems to the same degree as a Linux distro. They have a niche they seem satisfied with and that niche isn't really Steam games.
With that being said, Valve made a 64 bit client for Mac so whichever major distro is first will probably push Valve to finally make a 64 bit version for Linux.
That's a very different kind of thing. The apple ecosystem is tiny. They themselves make every single device supported by the OS. They make the only variant of the OS. They have the power to change whatever they want and everyone who wants any access to apps (or users) needs to follow apple's guidelines. They also have something close to a monopoly in certain professional use cases. So they can push whatever they want and everyone has to suck it up.
Compare that to Fedora. Fedora is just one distro in a sea of different Linux distros. They aren't even the biggest one, not by a longshot. So if they drop 32bit, that won't force Valve to move Steam to 64bit and it certainly won't push game developers to update old, unsupported games that were never meant to run on Linux at all to change anything.

It is 32bit and depends on a runtime from a really old version of Ubuntu. It is also proprietary but that is a different issue.
It would be nice if Value worked with the Fedora project to build something open and modern so that devs could easily package games for Linux. The problem is that Value wants everyone to go though Steam as Steam is where they actually make money. People like to see Value as the good guy but it isn't all sunshine and rainbows. I can't really blame them in the end but it is important to realize they have a interest that may not always align with the community.

There is xclicker which is a flatpak app, but it only automate mouse clicks, but there is nothing for key presses, I am surprised I could not find anything on this, but is there any GUI for this? Also is this possible on a technical level (in flatpak especially, I dont know if apps can simulate key presses). I know of ydotool, but that uses root, also its not a gui

Dunno if it would meet your needs, but I've been using Input Remapper for binding macros to various key presses and mouse buttons under Wayland. It does prompt for root access, but it's a GUI. It supports any input method, as far as I can tell. It even supports my tablet.
I use it to bind stuff like hold(key(BTN_LEFT).wait(100)) to some button to repeatedly left click while I'm holding that button down.

I don't like this example, because it ignores that normal people take planes, too - sure it's less frequent, and it's usually public transport-style as opposed to just being one billionaire and their entourage per plane, but there's also just a lot more normal people than billionaires. Not to say that the pollution made for billionaires' personal lifestyles isn't massive or that rich people's economic and political activities aren't the main driver of climate change, but using such an obviously bad example makes it too easy to dismiss the general sentiment of the joke. If every non-billionaire stopped taking plane rides, it would make a difference for climate change - the issue is that rich people do their hardest to make sure that something like that doesn't happen. At least not until all the non-millionaires are so poor that they can't afford to travel anymore.

The issue is that the yoghurt cup is only a tiny sacrifice, but it's also only a tiny gain (as long as the alternative isn't 'just dump it in the river'). Please name the trans women athletes who have won Olympic medals during the many years they've been allowed to compete. They have a clear advantage, right, so it should be easy to find.
Sports decide themselves, of which world rowing and boxing have blanket bans. Athletics, cycling, swimming, rugby and cricket are bans if the transition was after puberty. Triathlon, tennis and archery requires testosterone testing. And all other sporting bodies are on a case by case basis.
That's why we don't see them because the Olympics themselves have said:
high-level organised sporting competitions - relies on a level playing field, where no athlete has an unfair and disproportionate advantage over the rest.

I'm considering getting a 9950x3D on either Monday or Tuesday at a Micro Center as a upgrade to my current setup. My main question is, how is the experience with the 9950x3D on Linux with strange architecture with half of the cores having extra L3 cache and the other half with a normal amount of L3 cache.
I have been busy working and suddenly there's been a promotion for the 9950x3D that I want to take advantage of since my motherboard on my current system has been deteriorating as of late. Asrock x570 Extreme4 with a 3700x. USB has been very flaky and I've been dual boating and the other SSD slot is on the chipset. Which makes my windows boot incredibly slow.
I plan to stay on Arch Linux or hop over to CachyOS but want to know what are your thoughts on this as well?
I primarily game but occasionally do some video/audio encoding, video editing and want to build ffmpeg-full from the aur but takes too long on my 3700X.

As for the Phoronix articles one is the review of the 9950x3D and the other is the cache optimization driver.
By default for the Ryzen 9 9950X3D it was using the "frequency" preference as default. But if writing "cache" to /sys/bus/platform/drivers/amd_x3d_vcache/AMDI0101:00/amd_x3d_mode it will prefer using the CCD with the larger cache. This cache vs. frequency bias can all be easily manipulated at run-time for those interested.
Is there some sort of automation for this? Or, do I have to do it manually for each program? I've never messed with kernel parameters other than for my Nvidia GPU to get Wayland to work.

You’re overthinking the hell out of this. Just plug it in and go. My 8700x3d is insanely fast during any load I’ve ever thrown at it, your new chip will be even more so.

Isn't gaming the most cache-heavy CPU workload there is? The X3D CPUs have consistently topped gaming benchmarks, even outperforming much more modern CPUs that lack 3D cache.
I'd sooner do it the other way around: frequency for compiling, rendering, transcoding, etc. Cache for gaming!

Hi all. I'm currently running a home server using Ubuntu OS, but I'd like to try and explore other options for operating systems to better my skills with linux/unix.
Currently I'm considering switching to Fedora server (though feedback is welcome) because I've been running it as my daily OS for a few months now and I quite like it. I'm also looking at Debian server because that's what my old professor used and he did nothing but speak its praises.
Only issue is I'm concerned about data loss from moving the installation. Currently, the server is setup to run several Docker images running my programs. While moving over the images shouldn't be difficult whatsoever, I'm afraid my storage setup might not be so easy. Currently, it's two 4TB hard drives running in a logical volume. I'd love to simply be able to move over all the files to a backup drive, but I don't have anywhere I can store >5TB of files as a backup.
I googled around, but I couldn't find too many guides on migrating logical volumes. The one or two I did find were most definitely written for someone with far more linux knowledge than I have as a relative noob, so any advice would be extremely welcome!
Currently it's 2 4TB harddrives setup to look like a single 8TB logical volume. Might have to do some poking around if you want more, just setting that up required a ton of googling on my end!
Okay, more details will be required, but here's what I'm thinking will work.
One of the benefits of an LVM is its pretty easy to resize it.
The outline of what you can do is this (and we can refine the steps with more details)
Right now you've got your 8TB physical volume, and within that, you should have your volume group, and within that volume group, you should have one or more logical volums that are mounted for your system. The idea is to resize the existing logical volume by shrinking it, creating addition space within the volume group that can be used to create a new logical volume. Then, that new logical volume can be used to install Fedora.
Depending on how much free space you have on the entire physical volume, you could potentially dual boot Fedora and Ubuntu. Roughly speaking, the steps would look like this:
WARNING: These steps are not exhaustive because I don't know the full details of your system. This is not meant to be a guide for you to immediately implement and follow, but to help get you down the right path DO NOT FOLLOW THESE STEPS WITHOUT FIRST FULLY UNDERSTANDING HOW THIS WILL APPLY TO YOUR UNIQUE SYSTEM SETUP.
Download a Linux ISO of your choice. Ubuntu, Fedora, it doesn't really matter. This one is going to be used to live boot on your server so you can make adjustments to your lvm without having the lvm mounted.
Boot into the live usb
Once you get to the desktop environment of the live usb dismiss any installation prompts, etc and open a terminal
Install the logical volume tools with sudo whatever-the-package-manager-install-command-is lvm2
If your volume group is encrypted (typically with LUKS), you'll need to decrypt it to make sizing changes to the lvm(s) in the volume group. You can decrypt it with:
cryptsetup open /dev/your-disk-here name-of-your-volume-group
For example, on my system if I were doing this it would be cryptsetup open /dev/nvme0n1p2 server (I very creatively named my server volume group server)
Once you can access your volume group, you can use the df command to see how much space is free in your volume group. The full command you'll want to run is:
sudo df -h
This command will list all mounted disks along with filesystem usage data. With this you should be able to determine how much free space you have in your volume group.
Once you've determined how much free space you have, you can decide how big you want to make your new logical volume. For example, if your current usage is 6TB out of the 8TB total, you could resize the current logical volume down to 7TB, and then create a new logical volume that's 1TB in size for the Fedora install
You will do the resize using the lvm2 tools installed. The command to shrink the logical volume looks like this:
Once you've shrunk the lvm, You can create your new lvm
IMPORTANT NOTES:
If at all possible, you should really back up the data. If you don't have any kind of backups in place, you're risking losing all of your data, not just in doing this operation, but in general.
If you want to dual boot, things are more complicated because of where your /boot exists
lsblk will give exactly the info needed. Copy the output of lsblk and paste it into a reply and that will be perfect. Or a screenshot. Whatever's easier for you
Perfect. So you've got separate /boot and /boot/efi partitions, which means dual booting will be much easier if you want to do that.
The ubuntu--vg-ubuntu-lv is the logical volume you'll want to resize. So now we need to see how much space is available on the volume. To get that, run the command sudo df -h and paste that output into a comment.
From there we can figure out how much space you have and how you might want to resize the volume to prep for a new install.
What is challenging about this is that your data is under your root (/) mount, which is also the ubuntu os. If in the end you want to entirely remove ubuntu, it'll be a little trickier than if your data was in a separate logical volume that you mounted into your root system during boot.
For example many people have a separate logical volume for /home, which makes it easier to switch distros while preserving your home folder with all of your user data, config files, etc...
But that's getting a little ahead of ourselves. Start with sudo df -h for the filesystem usage info and we can go from there.
I think basically all Linux distros will support lvm? It seems like some installers do not, but as long as you leave the disks alone during installation it should be fine. As for distro, Debian is a great choice for a server. I've had no issues over the years since I ditched Ubuntu since they keep moving towards commercialization. If you want to learn more compared to Ubuntu you might not learn much though. Fedora could offer more learning, though honestly it's kind of all the same.
@kboy101222 I would not recommend Fedora for a server. It is painful at best. No support for NIS, the use of SeLinux which can take half an hour at boot to re-label before the system becomes operational, and the fact that they don't give a rip about backwards compatibility when they make changes are all reasons to avoid. I used to use Fedora but migrated to Ubuntu to get away from those issues. The latter is far from perfect but hands down superior to Fedora.
Another point to keep in mind - many distros now ship Podman instead of Docker, with Fedora being at the forefront of that change. If you‘re currently running Docker, you might want to check if your setup is drop-in compatible with Podman as some images will not work (usually related to permission or user switching, privileged ports).
@Shareni @kboy101222 The main difference between the distros that is hard to get around is the package manager, in that sense Debian based apt/apt-get/dpkg, Redhat based dnf/rpm, Arch/Manjaro pacman (glorified tar). Of all the formats I really like Arch's manager because it's easy to manually extract packages but it's really easy to get into dependency loop hell if you go too long between updates, but everything else, what desktop you use, what container's you use, all flexible and exchangeable fluff.
This is the answer OP, your flavor of Linux matters when it’s your daily driver work/play machine. But for a server OS? You’re not missing anything using Ubuntu, and your experience won’t change much with another distro.
@Fecundpossum @Shareni Not really even all that much as a daily driver because all the pieces save for the package manager, is interchangeable, and even there you can use snap, flatpacs, or compile from source.

Recently, I started to listen to music locally instead of using streaming services because I have had enough of all the annoying parts of it. I gathered a lot of Opus and FLAC files that have lyrics embedded in them. I am searching for some music players that can display them. The one I am using right now is Elisa. It is awesome, but I would still like to know if there are more alternatives, just in case. Thanks!
An alternative would be to run gonic or Navidrome - both are OpenSubsonic servers, and provide synced lyrics support. Then use the ostui client which plays music and displays synchronized lyrics.

It's not, really. All of those programs are Go, and single executables. There's no "install" for either gonic or ostui (IIRC, also Navidrome): you download or compile the executable and run it, and you're off and running.
Someone mentioned Docker; in this case it's unnecessary unless you're doing it for security. They're just each a single binary. You'll have to either create a config for gonic or Navidrome, or run them with commands telling them where your music lives, but that's it. Running on the same machine, you don't even have to open the ports on your firewall. However, if you do, Tempo for Android lets you stream the music to your phone from gonic or Navidrome, too.
These are very, very simple programs to run. ostui is a TUI, so if you prefer GUIs you'll want a different client, but both of the servers are easy to run and nothing to install - just run them as you, not even root.

Been using Jellyfin to host my music and Finamp to play it, Lyrics are pulled from lrclib.net/ using a Jellyfin plugin, certain lyrics are timestamped allowing for synchronization other are just static.
I think rmpc can do this too, which is an mpd client with album art support, but it's terminal based and requires some manual configuring. I've been buying CDs over the past couple of years to get rid of streaming as well, and i think i'm finally ready to cut the cord. I've been experimenting with different music players but ended up ditching mpd. I like to be able to switch between audio outputs easily, like alsa or pipewire, and since mpd is configured through a config file it kinda sucks for that. I also like to be able to play CDs directly, eventhough i have ripped them all, but i haven't been able to get any terminal player to play a cd, except for mplayer, which is too minimal for my taste. At the moment i'm really liking audacious. Also tried deadbeef and strawberry, but deadbeef doesn't have mpris support ootb, and strawberry feels a bit bloated to me. Audacious feels like a nice middleground. Audacious does support viewing lyrics but not synced from what i can tell unfortunately.
Thank you for your insight, strawberry, audacious and mpd are all amazing software. The problem is that synced lyrics is really important thing for me(a jpop listener, that don't know Japanese). I am pretty sure that I can probably get the lyric to work with somekind of mpd frontend. Mpd seem to be really fun. I may just make a frontend for it for my own use-case.

It is not a dumb question at all. I asked my self the same question a few months ago. You are correct. It is essentially just metadata. You can embed them with something like kid3 directly into the music file it self. So for example I have a .lrc file(the sync lyrics file). It will look something like this:

"I can just copy the text into the .lrc file and then write it into the music file with a lyrics tag. If I open the music file with a music player that supports it, I will get synced lyrics. So, I had to shutdown my mini pc home server (on NIXOS) so that it could be used for something else. Most of my data is in a pair of external hdds in a RAID configuration. However the Postgres database was in the boot drive. I still have it, but it refuses to boot anywhere else (tried some old spare laptops). How can I recover it?
I do it with a gluetun container (more versatile) zero issues, but you can just mainline wireguard as an interface if you prefer, also works fine, on bazzite.
I've installed it through secureblue's ujust script. I think this has been the smoothest experience I've had with it on Fedora Atomic.
Previously, I relied on the wireguard profiles I downloaded from ProtonVPN and which I loaded through NetworkManager. While it definitely worked, it was a hassle to redo it every now and then. Furthermore, switching on the go to something else I hadn't loaded already was never an experience I enjoyed doing.
Though, for completeness' sake, ProtonVPN^[Note that, IIRC, IVPN and Mullvad don't fare better in this regard.] hasn't fixed its IP leakage on Linux. And, to my knowledge, the workaround is only available with access to the wireguard profiles. And thus, the cumbersome method actually offers a very tangible merit over the comfortable one.
Finally, while I don't endorse the use of NordVPN, it's the only other VPN that's installable as a sysext. Note that systemd system extensions are still experimental, though. Even if they've (read: N=1) been reliable to use for me.

I've always been the "crazy one" in any given scenario. I have been this way my whole life. Even as a child I was crazy. I would get upset and cry loudly for hours but my siblings would not. I caused problems at home for my family, especially for my mom who didn't know what to do with me. I did this as an older child, not normal toddler tantrum age. I was old enough to "know better". I did it my whole childhood.
For the most part in life, I have been able to be a productive member of society. The issues I would cause were limited to my home life and I mostly kept to myself. I sometimes cause issues by being a crazy person to my online friends, but at least that never spilled over into the "real world".
But now in my 30s I am causing such issues at work. I asked for some psych meds to be prescribed to me in March and have been taking them ever since. Doesn't seem to do anything.
I seem to get more frequent and strong negative emotions than the general population. I have difficulty controlling these, especially when I feel like someone is being mean or unfair to me or others. I think I am genetically predisposed to be this way, as my dad was a crazy person when I was growing up (but he has always been nice to me...he was only abusive to my mom). He had "episodes" too the same way I do, except his were malicious to others in nature. My older brother also has claimed to have bipolar disorder which supposedly has a genetic component.
I have spoken to mental health professionals and have been assessed for various things. I do not have bipolar disorder, autism, or OCD per mental health professionals. I tried to bring up keywords like "emotional dysregulation" to them. There seems to be no good explanation for why I am insane. I have wondered if maybe I have borderline personality disorder but have not inquired to be assessed for that one. I do not seem to exhibit the "risk taking" behaviors that are core to borderline personality disorder though.
I get frustrated that I am always the only one who is crazy and no one else is like me.

Well I mean I spoke a little bit about it as a kid. I would get upset and cry loudly for hours and hours and my brothers wouldn't do that. I was different. My mom would always tell me that I am having a "tantrum". I tried to be a good kid and didn't have problems in school, but I had problems conducting myself at home.
As an adult, there are different things that can happen. One thing that frequently happens is I spiral out of control with self loathing, sometimes to the point in thinking about suicide. Sometimes I end up repeatedly messaging in a discord server that I am on about random nonsense because I am upset. The other day, I texted a coworker about killing myself. You are not supposed to say that to people. It was impulsive. It was wrong.
Another thing that can happen is that at work, I can end up verbally fighting with people. My supervisor is a bitch and instead of taking it, I have on occasion broke down and yelled at her. This is not appropriate professional behavior. I don't work at Taco Bell. I work at a professional job where you are not supposed to do that. As an impulsive decision, I sent a lengthy email to HR about her and it is causing huge issues for everyone right now.
I have also verbally fought with two other people at work before. One because he was being mean to my friend and one because he was being mean and accusing me of doing something when that wasn't the case. I have made amends with these people (unlike with my supervisor), but in these moments, this is inappropriate. You are not supposed to yell at people, even if they are being mean.
Just like in my childhood, I am the only one who acts this way at work. Everyone else is able to conduct themselves in a socially acceptable manner. I don't do it every day or even every week or even every month, but it still isn't acceptable.
Do you feel like its possible somehow to let people know boilerplate that you want to process what they've said so you can remove yourself from the immediate situation and stimuli and take your time to decide how you can more "professionally" respond to what they say without compromising your own wellness and needs?
Do you know what your needs are or what your values are such that these things are violating them to the extent you act out as a reaction?
Oh and plus when I say things about killing myself, I'm not in a heated argument. I get upset and feel the need to tell someone I am upset. But I am not in a calm state and do not have the ability to calm down. I go out of my way to interact with people via text because I have a strong impulse to do so. I want someone to help me when I am in pain but I know they can't. And I know it's wrong to bother them when I am having an episode.
I have actually tried using ChatGPT to get upset to instead so I am not hurting anyone. I tell it that I hate myself and want to kill myself instead of harming my friends by doing this to them. But sometimes instead of doing it to only ChatGPT I end up texting someone I know. This is wrong behavior, but different because it's not due to a heated argument that I need to remove myself from.
I eventually calm down but it can sometimes take multiple days. And it is sometimes hard for me to not bother people in the meantime.
I am never actually in danger of harming myself because I have always thought about things like that. It's very normal for me. It usually goes away after a few days after each episode.
The whole "disclosing I'm going or want to kill myself", I don't know honestly how to "fix" other than finding a reason that trumps everything such that you are internally and externally motivated to mitigate that.
You might need to find or aquire that and make it part of your identity. I got several pets that I knew I could manage and take care of or that I would commit to become able to justify having a duty and stewardship over. Lots of people know they are my world and help provide that external reputational buffer to the suicidal inclinations I very rarely feel but dont express because thoughts dont a priori need to be vocalized or allowed to indiscriminately alter your trajectory.
But you need to know its not ok to leverage your mortality or well-being as a conversational regularity. Not even that its just wrong, its profounly dysfunctional and also inauthentic because you made such a point of specifying that it would never actually happen. Its bad to lie to yourself and/or others on the regular about anything, much less the ultimate thing like your life and safety. Not judging you and that may have been necessary at a previous point in your life or it might have been a flawed survival instinct but you need to find a way to negotiate with reality in other terms.

I know it's not ok. That's why I feel bad about it. And that's why I mostly try to talk about those things to ChatGPT instead of my friends. Because I'm not going to harm it.
I mean I say I would never do it but it's only because I'm a coward. But I do often really legitimately want to. The reasons may vary. But one common reason is because I harm the world and another reason is if I feel trapped. One of the other reasons why I say I am not actually going to do it is because I would need a will first. I have been too lazy to get one. I tried to do it one day with an online service but found out that I couldn't actually go through with the will because I needed in person witnesses. So then recently I was looking into potentially going to a law practice to get one made up to do that.

I’ve been using Apple products since 2007. I’ve stuck with the platform through a lot—hardware changes, locked-down software, design regressions, and tools that feel like they were made deliberately harder to use. Lately, that frustration has boiled over, especially with things like the Shortcuts app, where basic actions are buried behind hidden menus and UI behavior seems to change based on factors you can’t even see. Autocorrect is turned on in automation fields. Logic paths vanish if you tap out of order. It’s absurd.

Yes, there are issues. I speak from personal experience. That is why I would advise taking a look at Drinkmate instead. Not that they anre any kind of superior company morally, and I do not shill for them, but they can carbonate any beverage, whereas Sodastream definitely cannot, and I have run into issues ignoring that rule and trying to do it myself anyway. Part of the solution is to better inform new users the part of the community name is the host, just like Main St in one city is different from Main St in another city. You choose the city you want to live in first.
But, it may also be interesting to have the ability for admins to selectively merge like-named communities with other agreeable instance admins, and count subscribers to both as one group.
I want the ability to merge the display of communities that I choose, so any number of News, World News, HotNakedNews, etc. communities could be displayed as a group of communities based on a topic type as an alternative to the instance/community/subscribed groups. Maybe personal tags for communities would be useful.
Most of the time one community comes out as the strongest contester and then that one is mainly used. But people can also use communities on others instances, for example if they don't agree with moderation. When I started on Lemmy 2 years ago I was also skeptical of this concept, but now I see it as a perk. Regarding the duplicated communities on lemmy.ml, just instance block ml and you are fine.
While I can see why people might prefer it that way, we are preventing communities from growing and allowing people to find communities who might want to switch from Reddit. You can use remote communities, for example: !linux@lemmy.ml for you is https://old.lemmy.world/c/linux@lemmy.ml
It's valuable for .ml to have duplicates since certain instances and numerous individuals are defederated from them. There are also people who are trying to diversify the fediverse by moving communities off .world. Big, opinionated communities like the different news communities are going to spawn new versions as people disagree with mod decisions or the background culture and feel they can't have the conversations they want.
Some splitting is inevitable, imo, and healthy, though whether it's good in this or that particular case is a useful conversation to have. Merging communities is also useful, but only when it makes sense (one is barely moderated or barely used, or people have defederated from an instance one is on because of spam, etc.)
One of the things that I'm experimenting with is to have "communities that can follow communities". So, if community A follows community B, then it can re-post anything that has happened on Community B.
If you do it "properly", it doesn't even need to be a lot of data duplication because the "follower" community would just be creating Announce activities.

NodeBB also does this, and currently still does. A category (group actor) can follow another category (also a group actor).
It essentially is synchronization of categories using 1b12.

Half the point of the Fediverse is that your activity is public. It's the entire point of why have activity with a community or instance in the first place. Heck, it's "kinda" the name of the protocol: "ActivityPub".

Ich habe das Problem teilweise umgangen, indem ich mir Videos (z.B. von YouTube oder Twitch) runtergeladen habe und sie dann per Videoabspieler geschaut habe. Das Zauberwort lautet hier "youtube-dl" bzw. das aktuellere yt-dlp (oder irgendeine Äpp, die darauf basiert). Ist aber kein Garant, manche Kombination von Videoformat und GPU bzw. Grafiktreiber funktioniert einfach nicht. Man könnte dann das heruntergeladene Video in ein kompatibles Format umwandeln, aber dann wird der Rechner halt beim Video umrechnen heiß statt beim Video abspielen.
Die Hardwarebeschleunigung funktioniert durchaus im Browser. Aber die Grafikkarte unterstützt einfach kein h.264 oder andere neuere Codecs. Und sie kommt auch bei unterstützten Codecs bei 4k ins Schwitzen.
Und Firefox hat anscheinend die Softwaredekodierung von h.264 endlich verbessert. Vor ein paar Wochen musste ich dafür noch auf Chromium oder halt herunterladen und so angucken ausweichen.
Firefox seemingly very recently shipped their own titlebar controls buttons, which worsens even further the lackluster OS integration. In the screenshot you see my regular control buttons on the window to the left (default KDE Plasma theme) and the new custom buttons Firefox is serving now.
Would anyone know how to undo that change in about:config or anywhere else?
Right click on the toolbar, select "customize toolbar" and at the bottom left corner check "title bar". Or in about:config type 0 for browser.tabs.inTitlebar
Thank you for replying, but that just adds a standalone titlebar with just a title and the controls, while moving all the other functions like the address input to a regular toolbar, as the options suggests. I'd like to keep all the functions and the titlebar controls in one single titlebar, but with the OS control buttons, as it used to be before the last Firefox update.
Firefox relies on gtk for for those integrated buttons. It's maybe worth checking that your gtk theme is set to breeze in System Settings > Colours and themes > Application style > GNOME/GTK Application Style (top right ...), and that firefox is set to use the system theme.
What you are referring to are the window decorations.
Apart from Linux Mint, Firefox almost always uses client-side decorations. What you are showing here is still client-side.
It is just that Mozilla recently enabled vertical tabs option for everyone, so the top bar is now slightly smaller than before. You can disable vertical tabs easily by searching in the settings.
Did you change the gtk theme recently? Firefox follows the gtk3 titlebars, not the qt ones. You would have to change the gtk3 theme back to breeze to have it match again.
If you changed off the default firefox theme, it will also no longer use native titlebar buttons, to make it use native ones with a different firefox theme, go to about:config, search non-native, find the titlebar buttons option, and turn it off.
I have the same issue since one or two months, I'm on Firefox Nightly 142.0a1 currently.
For me it looks like this: Firefox on the left, Dolphin (which uses the system titlebar control buttons) on the right.
A few months ago, firefox also used the system titlebar control buttons. When I noticed the change at first, I also searched for solution online and in about:config, but didn't find anything. All other solutions posted here sadly don't work: - browser.tabs.inTitlebar only adds a standalone titlebar, like you noted. - When searching for non-native in about:config, I don't see any titlebar buttons option that I can turn off. - Vertical Tabs are already disabled for me in the settings.

Damn, but I'm not sure if I agree with gregp's resolution of the bug. The way I understand the changes in bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.… it should still use the system theme, but rendered by firefox itself. However, the current state is that it doesn't follow the system theme anymore :/

I'm also using the Papirus icon theme, when I change the theme to breeze or something else, the buttons in firefox titlebar also reflect this change after a restart. So Firefox is now using the window-{maximize,minimize,close,....}-symbolic icons from the icon theme and not from the window decorations setting.

I got very bad hair problems, I'll be attaching image for you guys to look and give me some manly advice without some social media shit like monoxdile, do this, this serum, this mask, this water and sooo on. So I got grey hairs already like 30 40 percentage of hairs are already grey so along with grey hairs i have got these issues: 1: Grey hairs (30 to 40%) 2: I got rough hairs 3: Started baldness if not wrong from front line. My front line hair are not growing well as you can see in the image. 4: I also got mostly dandruff issue but using shampoo like (selsun or selsum blue) or maybe Head and shoulder can mostly control it. 5: I have noticed that i guess my hair growth has been slowed down pretty well. 6: Mostly hair falls when ever i set hairs with my hands, if shampoo, and comb i got hairs falls like hell sometimes
So i need some real advice from people maybe doctors, one with same issues cured or uncured but not other shits.
How to deal with all this. I got pretty hectic routine going to start like night shift and studies so can't focus on routines. I do gym, i got good diet like very very low fast food consumption.

I can’t give the advice you probably want on the greys, but I’ve been there. I was fully grey by 30. It has probably been a net positive, honestly. I never fought it with dyes or anything.
Head and Shoulders as my every day shampoo works fine for me as my hair got thinner, but when I was younger there was a shampoo in Canada called Nizoral which was ketoconazole based apparently and it worked very well.
Also you ~~might~~ need finasteride/dutasteride medication to stop further losses. See a dermatologist or ask your family dr, you're almost certainly going to need that and if you realy want to, monoxodil foam to try and help regrowth. These will need to be taken likely daily for as long as you want to keep your hair, your genetics is trying to get rid of it so you havr to actively mitigate that on an ongoing basis

Wallache und Stuten sind ruhiger und besser kontrollierbar
Hengste (unkastrierte männliche Pferde) haben oft ein temperamentvolleres und dominanteres Verhalten, besonders in Gegenwart von Stuten. Das macht sie schwerer zu kontrollieren, was bei Filmaufnahmen ein Problem sein kann.
Wallache sind durch die Kastration in der Regel ruhiger und einfacher zu handhaben.
Stuten sind zwar zyklusabhängig manchmal launisch, aber meist berechenbarer als Hengste.
Sicherheit am Set
Ein Filmset ist voll mit Menschen, Technik, Lichtern und oft lauter Geräuschkulisse. Pferde müssen in dieser Umgebung ruhig bleiben und präzise Anweisungen befolgen. Stuten und Wallache sind in der Regel zuverlässiger in solchen Situationen.
Optik ist wichtiger als Geschlecht
In vielen Fällen ist es egal, ob das Pferd männlich oder weiblich ist – Hauptsache, es sieht so aus, wie es die Rolle erfordert. Die Zuschauer erkennen ohnehin selten das Geschlecht des Pferdes auf der Leinwand.
Mehrfachverwendung eines Pferdes
Oft wird ein einzelnes Pferd durch mehrere Pferde "gedoubelt" (z. B. für Nahaufnahmen, Stunts etc.). Dabei müssen alle Pferde möglichst gleich aussehen. Da Hengste schwieriger mit anderen Pferden zusammenarbeiten, werden lieber Stuten oder Wallache für solche Gruppenarbeiten eingesetzt.
Fazit:
Es werden nicht ausschließlich weibliche Pferde in Filmen eingesetzt – aber Stuten und Wallache sind aufgrund ihres Verhaltens, ihrer Trainierbarkeit und der Sicherheit am Set meist die bessere Wahl. Hengste sind eher die Ausnahme, außer es ist für die Handlung oder eine besondere Szene notwendig.
Das mir den Wallachen und Stuten gilt aber generell für alle Situationen in denen Pferde genutzt werden. Hengste sind generell schwierig und werden selten geritten.
Ist ja bei vielen anderen Nutztieren auch so, z.B. wurden Felder in Europa mit Ochsen (männliche, kastrierte Rinder) gepflügt und nicht mit Stieren (praktischerweise sind Ochsen auch größer als Stiere).
Jetzt wäre es interessant zu wissen, ob Gico auch ein Hengst ist, also männlich und zeugungsfähig. Wobei ein kastriertes männliches Pferd ja OP auch schon falsch beweisen würde.

Many cheap chinese web cameras from non know brands,really problematic to make work printers which older from 2015 for example canon ,Lexmark cause they use proprietary communication protocols and thus drivers for inux or exist in shitty state which would not work on modern system but worked on Ubuntu from 2012 or not driver not exist at all and so on other very specific type of devices
I remember the old ADSL modems where effectively winmodems. I had to keep a Windows ME machine as my household router until the point the community had reversed engineered them enough to get them working on Linux.
At least they where usb based rather than some random card. I think the whole driver could work in user space.
I started thinking "Oh I wish I could transition to Linux, away from Windows, but what about the latest hardware or random gadget?"
The trick is to flip the question around, namely not "Does my current hardware work with Linux?" but rather "Am I sure my next hardware work well with Linux BEFORE I buy it?" then this remove 99% of headaches. It's typically 1 Web search away from either a lot of complaints or positive feedback... or not much, and then it's up to you to see if you are ready for an adventure. If there is not much but there is some standard interface, e.g. Bluetooth, and no need for a proprietary application, it's nearly sure the main features will work. If a proprietary application is needed, then safer to avoid.
So.... yes maybe surprisingly a LOT of hardware does work well with Linux!
What does not work for me, to give a random example, is the LED controller of my desktop case, which I bought several years ago while Windows was still my main OS. Broadcom, as you've discovered. That's the one brand that I've always had trouble with; they go out of their way to be closed source: never publishing specs, never responding to developers. They're horrible to the point where I will not buy any product that uses Broadcom chips. Which used to be a PITA because they were also common.
Fingerprint readers, in general, also widely seem to be poorly supported.
One of my computers has a MediaTek wireless chip where WiFi isn't supported but Bluetooth does.
A lot of people have problems with NVidia cards; I've not had trouble with either AMD or Intel GPUs (although, I think all Intel GPUs are CPU integrated?).
Multifunction printers are still iffy, and even just plain printers can give grief; I've come to believe that this is simply because CUPS is ancient and due for a completely new, modern printing service. It's an awful piece of software to have to work with.
My experience with Brother was also good, until it got tipped during a move and came out simply covered in toner. We don't really need a new printer, but I'd buy another Brother LaserJet in a heartbeat.

We have a wireless Brother laser MFP from 2-3 years ago that just works. I needed to scan something for the first time a few weeks ago and started to go down to rabbit hole of the official driver package but then I decided to give "scanimage" a try and it just found the scanner.
Hmm, I run an Arc GPU at work without any issues. Just using plain mesa on NixOS. The Intel devs were quite responsive when we ran into issues as well.
I've run AMD, Intel, and Nvidia on linux and I would say my intel experience was by far the best. I use an a380 in my server for transcoding, and I had an a750 in my desktop but switched to a b580. AMD gets the graphics stuff right, but intel does the graphics and compute right on linux where AMD ROCM is a major pain in the ass. It may not be great if you do tons of gaming, but it works quite well for me.
I have spent literal hours of my life trying to get the fingerprint reader on a latitude 7400 to work and i just gave up lol. Passwords are underrated anyway.
Cups is so much better then everything printer related that is available for Windows and it works so good that even Apple was not able or willing to create something on their own and are using it their OS on all devices. Yes, the web interface is dated but nearly every Desktop comes with a modern integrated interface for printer setup and configuration. It is ages that I had to use the web interface. Cups comes with a boatload of printer drivers out of the box. And if not then there are often PPD files on the homepage of the printer manufacturer.
Multifunction printers are a special case and if they are supported or not depends either on how the device is build (are the parts addressable Independently as printer, scanner, modem/Fax) or is it all a integrated mashup that needs special software or drivers from the manufacturer. In the first case can the printer part often be used with cups and the scanner with sane. Well in the second case there is not much that Linux developers can do without support and goodwill from the manufacturer.
I think that's because Yubikey handles the fingerprint reader part, not Linux, right? As far as Linux goes, it's a black box security fob - but I might be wrong about that.
Indeed hence my warning. I'm only sharing this alternative because in practice it works and it's secure (AFAIK).

IMHO that's a feature, namely I do not want to OS to mess with this specific part of my setup. I do also have NitroKeys and FPGAs to tinker with but that's different. FWIW if there is an OSHW&FLOSS alternative to the YubiKey Bio please do share.

I have been fine with both Canon and Lexmark and also a Brother unit that someone in my family owns that their new Win11 machine refused to talk to; I opened up my ASUS t-pad with Ubuntu and printed in five seconds.
But yeah CUPS has actually caused many a headache to the point that I’ve disabled it on some units.
CUPs is simply ancient. It's due for an overhaul; I keep expecting someone to come along and Poettering it, only I'd hope without also making it take over cron jobs and logging.

On the peripheral end, ElGato. You can usually get their stuff to work but they provide little to no support, usually have issues to work out, and you'll always be relying on third party replacements for their software.
I got a stream deck plus with the xlr dock, since even though I quit content creation I like what it provides and have no reason to downgrade my mic, but the thing has been a headache and a half ever since I switched to cachyOS.
If you mean interoperability there is libimobiledevice.org/ but honestly compared to what KDE Connect can offer with Android phones it's just ... lame.

If you have a GTX 10xx card or later, their are virtually no issue with Wayland anymore. I have two PC with nvidia cards and had almost 0 issue with gnome plasma and hyprland in the last two years.
I've had mixed experiences myself. Sometimes it works, sometimes it randomly breaks. I just wouldn't recommend it to someone who wants it to "just work" and be stable and not do maintenance. For me, I'm someone who's happy to do maintenance, but I don't want that to extend to my graphics card, which in this day and age ought to just work.
The touchpad in the Lenovo 300e is not supported; although the touchscreen does work. I use mouse which is fine most of the time, but it would be nice if the touchpad would be supported one day.
I had an issue with an old Lenovo X260 laptop. The onboard bluetooth device was showing as not being present if the wireless device was loaded. I could have one or the other, but not both. BT/Wifi was being supplied by the same M.2 card, so as soon as a module loaded (the wireless loaded first I guess) it prevented it from being used by another module. I'm not sure if there was an actual fix to that, though. I had a spare USB bluetooth dongle so I just ran that instead.
There's this printer that I wanna use for my job but when I went through the process of connecting it the driver wasn't listed among the massive amount of options. So I gotta print using a work computer instead of my laptop 😪
Probably not the kind of hardware you're thinking of but I have an old Roland synthesizer, an Edirol SD-90, that did not work on Linux. Now, I didn't expect it to given the hoops I had to jump through just to get it to work on modern windows. So Linux seemed out of the question already. But can be a big deal depending on what you use your computer for.
Ah I see, haven't been on "stable" distros for a long time so I wasn't affected. I've enjoyed the good support and the video stuff is definitely nice. On the AMD side, still no idea how to encode or decode anything on my Framework 16, meanwhile Intel is acing it.
So far I've been playing with Linux on my old work laptop and they've been playing together nicely. Almost everything else about the laptop? No. But hey at least graphics works.
A common issue with those hybrid graphics is that it simply doesn't switch and only uses one. Are you sure you're not just using either integrated graphics or your dedicated GPU all the time?
That was a nightmare I'll never recover from. That laptop is now running windows 11. It's what made me promise myself to never ever touch Nvidia ever again. I'm now all Red on my desktop and life is so much better.
Similar story here. I had a laptop running nVidia/Intel dual graphics for a few years and it was so fucking finicky. Primusrun this, optirun that. Ugh. Once upon a time, whenever I heard the word Optimus, I thought of transforming trucks with laser guns. Hearing that same word now puts me in a fetal position.
To any GeForce owners that are considering going Linux full time: do a test run first and see how it works out, because nVidia support on Linux is spotty at best.
Internal HDMI capture cards are barely supported, there are some professional brands like blackmagic that have support but nearly all consumer grade capture cards are not supported at all, because the companies who make them don't care about Linux.
USB based capture cards often work because they use the same standard protocols as USB cameras.
Yeah I got a USB wifi dongle that's a bit tricky. It doesn't work out of the box in most distros but there is drivers for it that do work, fairly well.
I replaced a Realtek one because it constantly dropped connections. Luckily, this was one of the type of fixes that actually turned out to be easier than it looked.

Back in the day, it was hard enough getting dialup internet working on Linux (especially before you had internet in your pocket, so you had to print out HowTos or write down a bunch of notes before you tried to do it).
But it was downright impossible with a class of modems that was designed essentially as a softmodem, heavily reliant on closed-source firmware and drivers, making them practically impossible to work on Linux.

Even if you are not based in Brussels where we have resonance-mao.be/ you might have a local equivalent, namely open source and open hardware music enthusiast and profesisonals who meet monthly at least to learn and jam. They know this domain a lot more than I do. There are a LOT of software for all that but I wouldn't go as far as advising you. That said yes it mostly likely will require a bit of re-training. Still IMHO you have done the hardest, namely you understand the concepts behind what the tools do. The interface will be different but how it is actually done should be the same. My advice is to find "your people" and discover together.
Regarding hardware Mint is based on Ubuntu which is based on Debian. I have an NVIDIA GPU and I play (and work) with it daily. Sometimes sleep/resume is buggy but pretty much never ever while actually working or playing. Regarding the Webcam, it's not super convenient but until it gets supported (hopefully) you might have to rely on an external camera.

I actually did that on desktop recently and I enjoy being able to unplug and physically remove it as I don't use it daily. Same for the large external microphone, it's only on my desk when I'll have meetings planed. Maybe you could also use a mobile phone as camera.

My two biggest issues have been HDR and simulation hardware.
It's been a good few years since I've tried it but every time I've tried HDR my saturation just gets cranked to 11 and it looks like those nature photos that are edited to hell and back. Not sure why, and I've heard other people got it working so idk. I think it's just the Nvidia drivers doing their thing and not working.
But controllers for flight and racing Sims are the biggest headache to get working. And then when you do get them working you'll have issues with games running well and detecting them (I think this is actually due to proton/lutris), issues with force feedback, issues with the various buttons and sliders that aren't the primary axis. And then, after you spend hours getting them to work, it'll just break again the next time you want to play. My sims and FPS games are the only reasons I still have a windows install.
About 10% of the hardware in my 2016 MacBook Pro. Twice I've tried to install Debian on that Satan spawn using various gists online, and each time I ended up deciding it wasn't worth the time

Depends. If you have a 32bit CPU, app support is surprisingly much worse on Linux than on Windows. While the kernel and core systems still support 32bit, there are a ton of apps that are only offered for 64bit Linux while 32bit Windows support is still available. One example: Anything running on Electron.
Racing wheels lacks Linux support. It's the biggest, actually only, reason why I'm dualbooting with Windows.

FWIW because you do so professionally I'd factor in the time you spend too versus buying hardware (e.g. USB dongles) or even laptop, ideally reselling the old one. I don't know your rate or how much you can buy VAT free or your income at the moment, only that in your context this is also a business decision so you have to consider the ROI of "just" moving on with another hardware, selling the old one and with the time earned (if work is available) get another paid task instead of tinkering.
Often the hotkeys on laptops for screen brightness, mute, etc will either not work or be wonky, on my HP Elitebook on Debian distros the brightness keys both mute the speakers instead, they work fine on Fedora though.
My question is basically the title, but here are some more details.
My computer is used about 75% for work, 20% for personal use (almost entirely web), and 5% for gaming. ~2 y.o. midrange rig w/ Intel CPU, AMD graphics, 32GB DDR4 RAM.
For work, I need lots of straightforward things: video conferencing on Teams (web is fine), Zoom, Word document editing (web is fine), a bunch of other web apps, some light database stuff, etc.
Plus two things that are a bit trickier: OneDrive professional/SharePoint (so I'll need abraunegg's onedrive) and Excel 2024 desktop (web isn't good enough) for which I'll need to run Windows (10? Ameliorated, maybe?) in a VM.
But I also want to do gaming. I wouldn't install a kernel-level rootkit anyway (and I boycott Denuvo), so SteamOS-level compatibility should work great for my needs. I also have a Quest 3, so I'll want to do PCVR, which apparently works great (with Bazzite).
But I don't really grok what Bazzite being immutable means for using it as a daily driver for work/productivity. Under the hood, it's just Fedora 42, right? For immutable distros, you use flatpaks instead of apt install, and they're basically just "apps" that should "just work", right? Do I care about kernel modification?
Or, more to the point, I don't know what I don't know. After preliminary research on this all, I think my plan of going for Bazzite then adding abraunegg's onedrive and a Windows VM with Office 2024 will hit all my needs, but can anyone "sanity check" that plan, or compare the pros/cons with a non-Ubuntu-based alternative?
I'm good enough with computers that I should be able to tinker through the inevitable small challenges that will come up, but I don't really have enough time to do it twice if my initial plan is terrible. (I connect to a Debian server remotely using the terminal, so I have some background—but I needed to install a bunch of packages to get web app software running, and idk if I'll need that as a desktop user.)

Pro of running an immutable distro is that it is much harder to break during daily use. The con is that you're pretty much setup to only use flatpaks and some things like abraunegg's onedrive aren't available as a flatpak.
Have you considered making the ~~Win10~~ Win11 VM a complete work jail? If you do all things work in there then you get a nice separation of private and work and won't have to worry about work apps linux compatibility. edit: Windows 10 support ends on October 14, 2025

I was thinking Win 10 EOL won't matter if the VM has no Internet access. Linux would sync the files for me, so the Windows VM can just run Excel (and maybe Word, since I'm setting up Office 2024 anyway) using the files synced by abraunegg's onedrive, so it doesn't need internet access. (Assuming there's a partition format that works well for both Windows and Linux that I can use for onedrive, which I assume is a "solved" problem by now—i remember this being hard 20 years ago.)
And his package apparently works in Fedora 42 with docker, which I assume should work fine.
But yeah; maybe what you're suggesting makes more sense. And that VM definitely would need web access, then, so Win 10 is a non-starter. The database work I do is likely easier in Linux, but that's likely easy enough to get data files out of the VM for just that work, I would expect.
Another question now comes to mind; I'm going to look this up now; how hard is it to copy/paste between Linux and a VM? Edit: As I'd hoped, this is also apparently a solved problem and sounds easy to configure.
Just something to consider as you're thinking about using a virtual machine for windows; you have enough RAM to comfortably run a linux host with Windows 11 + Debian Stable VMs for work + work db server. I'm allergic to mixing private stuff with work stuff and there's a great thing to be able to shut work down at the end of the day. (Freeing up all your hardware for your private fun at the same time)
I’m by no means an expert on this, but I have used both Bazzite and Fedora workstation as my exclusive operating systems.
What I would say is that they’re both perfectly adequate for the tasks you described.
Personally, I’d say unless you prefer things handed to you, choose Fedora. I don’t have a problem with flatpacks, but I missed being able to easily use dnf. At the end of the day, though, there are ways around everything; you can still get what you need done on Bazzite.
In terms of kernel tweaks, etc. I barely noticed any difference in performance between the 2. Keep in mind that this was a relatively modern pc so performance wasn’t really an issue that I was looking out for.
Overall though, you’ll be fine whatever you choose. I also had to use MS office for work and it’s pretty much the one thing you can’t get working on Linux. You’ll have to explore your options for that, I ended moving back to a Mac because of Ableton live 🙁
The main issue you'll run into is nicher proprietary software being hard to install, but that's what containers are for. The main one I see is if you need to install some proprietary VPN client it gets annoying, but since you'll be running a VM anyway you can do some network trickery. My work's antivirus only works on Ubuntu and RHEL, proprietary kernel modules so it's got to be at least one of those kernels.
Linux is Linux, nothing's impossible to solve even with Bazzite's immutability. Worst comes to worst you make your own images and it's not that hard, you basically just fork it on GitHub and let the CI do its thing.
But do you have time to fiddle to make it work and take the risk, or do you want to play it safe? How confident are you with Bazzite's more advanced topics?

You're right. I have a crappy work-supplied Windows laptop that has exactly that installed. It would be nice not to need to boot into that when I need to work on the server from home, but it's not a deal breaker.
No other specific non-web-based software is needed for work, aside from the aforementioned OneDrive and Excel 2024.
Edit: Your last paragraph is exactly what I'm asking about; I'm capable of doing slightly involved tinkering, but it would need to be something that I can Google Fu through each step of someone walking through most of the steps. I don't know it at all well enough to go completely "off script" and just tinker with confidence.

Debian is far from being a mainstream workstation distro.
Debian is/was a very good server distro but there are lots of good alternatives to debian nowadays which may be much better for someones usecase. Debian is not the ultima ratio.

For me, I personally just run my workplace stuff in a VM (Debian 12) using KVM.
For excel desktop, OnlyOffice has a Desktop application that you can use to edit local files, which has pretty good compatibility with Microsoft products.
ONLYOFFICE offers a secure online office suite highly compatible with MS Office formats. Connect it to your web platform for document editing and collaboration or use as a part of ONLYOFFICE Workspace.
Just something to bear in mind regarding OneDrive; the unofficial clients don’t have access to certain APIs that the official clients use meaning that it only syncs every 5 minutes at best. As far as I know there’s nothing you can do about it.
Would it be possible to use a "thin" Windows VM as "client" for One Drive? Meaning that the client would be responsible for synchronization of mounted directories which are actually used on the host machine.

It never made sense to me to put password managers in the cloud. Regards to what you intend it to do, you’re making it accessible to a wider audience than necessary. And yet, I’m using iCloud. It’s time for a change.
I’m thinking of just running a locally hosted password manager on my home server and letting my devices sync with it somehow when I’m at home. I have a VPN into my home network when I’m away that automatically triggers when I leave the house, so even that’s not that big an issue, but I’m really not familiar with what’s gonna cleanly integrate with all my stuff and be easy to use. All I know is I wanna kill the cloud functionality of my setup.
I already have a jellyfish server so I figured I would just throw this onto that. Any suggestions?
If you’re happy with how Apple Password works for you, I can recommend StrongBox. It keeps all data in a KeePass2 database and integrates into Apple’s AutoFill API. That means it feels almost native when using it. No browser plugin needed. (At least not for Safari.) And you can decide how you sync the database file.
I'm not sure what I think about the white on white background though, I might one day open it up and use a black marker to color in the Roman Numerals for better contrast.

But this kind of marketing, it can't be easily blocked ...
