Η νόηση είναι ενσώματη και ενσωματωμένη μέσα σε πολιτικοκοινωνικές και πολιτισμικές διεργασίες που τη νοηματοδοτούν, επομένως η νευροτυπικότητα και η νευροαπόκλιση νοηματοδοτούνται μονίμως στο χώρο και το χρόνο. Αντιληφθείτε τη νευροτυπικότητα ως κυρίαρχο λόγο και μην εγκλωβίζεστε σε δυαδικές διακρίσεις. Καταλάβετε πώς εννοεί τους όρους το παράδειγμα και το κίνημα και κυρίως το Intersectionality. Να μην υπάρχουν παρανοήσεις. Δεν λέμε όλοι οι νευροτυπικοί κάνουν.., όλοι οι νευροδιαφορετικοί είναι… Ο αυτισμός είναι πολύ πραγματικός, αλλά δε βιώνεται με τον ίδιο τρόπο από ένα πλούσιο, λευκό, δυτικό αγόρι και μια μαύρη, φτωχή γυναίκα στο παγκόσμιο νότο. Έτσι και η νευροτυπικότητα δε βιώνεται με τον ίδιο τρόπο γιατί οι άνθρωποι πάντα βάζουν τις αρνήσεις, τις αντιστάσεις, τις επιλογές τους. Μιλάμε για τον τρόπο με τον οποίο ένας νευρότυπος εξυπηρετεί τον κυρίαρχο λόγο και την απόλυτη και αυτόματη δικαιοδοσία του ως προς την παραγωγή τη γνώσης και τον καθορισμό της πράξης. Κυρίως, τι επιπτώσεις έχει για όλους/ες/α μας όλο αυτό, τι δρόμους ανοίγει για να γεφυρωθεί το χάσμα μεταξύ των ανθρώπων που θέλουν αυτό να γεφυρωθεί.

με την επίθεση του Ισραήλ της κυβέρνησης Νετανιάχου στο Ιράν , το ενδεχόμενο του πόσο κοντά είμαστε στην εμπλοκή ΗΠΑ, και την πιθανότητα αυτό να καταλήξει σε μια γενικευμένη παγκόσμια σύρραξη μεταξύ των κρατών που έχουν ή πλήτονται τα συμφέροντα τους εκεί
το προηγούμενο ΠΣΚ που είχαμε το Φεστιβάλ Παλαιστινιακού Κινηματογράφου στο Πνευματικό Κέντρο Χανίων και το ΚΡαΧ ήταν εκεί με στούντιο έξω αλλά και μέσα από την αίθουσα, με ζωντανή αναμετάδοση του παλμό , των εξελίξεων του March to Gaza και των συζητήσεων που έγιναν μετά τις ταινίες
τις εξελίξεις με το δολοφονικό δυστύχημα – έγκλημα των Τεμπών και πως κοινοβουλευτικά με την πλειοψηφία της κυβέρνησης Μητσοτάκη προσπαθείται να μην πάρει τις διαστάσεις που πρέπει , ούτε να αποκαλυφθεί η αλήθεια

2ο Φεστιβάλ Ανεξάρτητου Παλαιστινιακού Κινηματογράφου – PIFF CRETE LEMESOS 13, 14 και 15 Ιούνη 2025 (και) στα Χανιά, στο Πνευματικό Κέντρο Χανίων
«Θα παραμείνουμε όσο υπάρχουν τα θυμάρια και τα λιόδεντρα», Μαχμούντ Νταρουίς
Με αυτά τα λόγια σαν οδηγό, το 2o Φεστιβάλ Ανεξάρτητου Παλαιστινιακού Κινηματογράφου (PIFF) θα λάβει χώρα στις 13-15 Ιουνίου 2025, στη Λεμεσό της Κύπρου και στην Κρήτη, στον Άγιο Νικόλαο και τα Χανιά. Η Λεμεσός μαζί με την ομάδα του “Αντιρατσιστικού Φεστιβάλ Αγίου Νικολάου” και από τα Χανιά το “Κοινωνικό Στέκι – Στέκι Μεταναστών” μαζί με την “Πρωτοβουλία Αλληλεγγύης στην Αντιστεκόμενη Παλαιστίνη” συνεργάζονται από κοινού για να ζωντανέψουν αυτό το Φεστιβάλ, το οποίο θα πραγματοποιηθεί τις ίδιες ημερομηνίες και σε ταυτόχρονο χρόνο, στον Κινηματογράφο Χριστίνα στον Άγιο Νικόλαο, στο Πνευματικό Κέντρο Χανίων αλλά και στην έδρα του, στη Λεμεσό της Κύπρου.
Φέτος, κατά το τριήμερο του Φεστιβάλ θα προβληθούν τέσσερεις ταινίες, οι σκηνοθέτες/τριες των οποίων είναι Παλαιστίνιοι/ες που προέρχονται από τη γη της Παλαιστίνης και από τη διασπορά. Το πρόγραμμα του Φεστιβάλ φωτίζει αφηγήσεις από τη Γάζα, τη Δυτική Όχθη και τα κατεχόμενα από το 1948 εδάφη, εξερευνά την πραγματικότητα, τους αγώνες και την αντίσταση των Παλαιστινίων σε αυτές τις περιοχές.

So, I was originally just going with Mint 22.1, but I’m getting a 9070xt and see mint is only on kernel 6.8 which doesn’t particularly support it?
Is using it still okay? Should I go with Bazzite instead? Or something else. I’m fine with a little amount of work to get shit working nice and all, I am fine with figuring out how to use the terminal if needed and all, just want something stable to play games and other shit on. Mint sounded good, but not if it won’t support my GPU.
I always go arch for stuff that needs the new shit, and debian for stuff that should run stable. Those nix bazzite tubleweed thingies are nice, but too niche, if you have a problem the small communities are less probable to have it as well and good luck finding solutions
@Eggymatrix @TowardsTheFuture The problem with Arch is that there is no support by kernel.org for an arch package, so if you want to customize your kernel it's more of a pain in the ass, where for either debian or redhat derivatives you can simply make -j($tasks) debbin-pkg or rpmbin-pkg. For most other things I would agree.
Arch may be a little more than I would prefer because… just going to look at the site would take learning just what the fuck is going on. I don’t need constant crazy new stuff, I just want the GPU to work.
@TowardsTheFuture @Eggymatrix Arch is pretty build your own, but that said you can customize it to the n-th degree and incorporating source from various repos is easiest when you have modern libs and don't have to build a dozen libs with each project (which is the case with Ubuntu). I just wish the kernel.org folks would create rules to create a kernel package to make mainstream kernels easier. Of all my machines, it is the second last to get upgraded (an ancient centos6 box last).
Is there a particular reason you need an nvidia gpu? Like plans to do local LLMs or other projects that really require a nvidia gpu?
Because I am just so pleased with AMD for gpus in Linux. So simple.

9070xt is an AMD… it’s just new… and I’ve seen a lot of posts saying you want kernel 6.13 or higher for it, and mint 22 is using 6.8. (And that you want mesa 25 but I don’t think getting that’s an issue?)

Yeah I mean, no experience with it and it says it’ll all probably work but I was not sure about it. I had seen mint 22 was made to not be stuck on 5.15 so it might be possible but it seems like they focus on LTS which would go to 6.12 now and not 6.13+. Is it worth doing all that to still use mint or would I be better off just going with like fedora 42 or bazzite or something else.
I've put later kernels on Mint a half dozen times withno dramas, but whether you should depends on what your use case, preferences and skill are.
I personally wouldn't do the arse-ache that is an immutable system, but plenty here love their Bazzite it seems. Different strokes for different folks. Nothing wrong with that.
If you love Mint except for the kernel version then it's an easy fix. If you don't have deep feelings then either try & be ready to ditch, or pick an alternative.

I get the impression you've been enticed/subjected to some confusing technical jargon without noticing. Please allow me to shed some light.

Stable can mean a bunch of different stuff that may or may not be closely related. In the case of Debian, it's the name of its default release; the one in which packages are frozen for two years except for security patches. (Note that this naming scheme is not unique to Debian.) As such, a Debian installation will be unchanging for these two years, earning its stable designation (which, to be clear, just meaning unchanging in this context). Finally, this unchanging environment should provide a ton of stability (i.e. stuff just works), which is also referred to as stable. These three distinct meanings of stable are probably the ones you'll come across the most.

The bold part is a clear demonstration that you understood stable to mean strictly robust; i.e. the third meaning discussed above. And to be clear, Fedora does a decent job at providing a reliable experience. (Bazzite even more so.) But not all three meanings of stable apply to it: - For Fedora (and thus Bazzite by extension), the only stable repository is the one used to create its ISOs (i.e. the images used for installation). Beyond this, some packages are frozen within a release/version; e.g. you'll never get a major release update for GNOME unless you do a major release update for Fedora. But..., that's basically it; (almost) all other packages receive regular updates. As such, Fedora is often referred to as a semi-rolling release distro instead (as opposed to Debian being referred to as a stable release distro). So, to be clear, Fedora and Bazzite are NOT stable in this context. - As (most of) its packages receive regular updates, it isn't unchanging either. And thus, NOT stable in this context as well. - However, in terms of offering a robust/reliable experience, Fedora is pretty good. Bazzite is even better due to its atomicity^[That is, updates either happen successfully or not at all. So a random power outage (or otherwise) is not able to break the system's integrity.] and the superior distro-management allowed by the bootc model.
So, to answer your question, Fedora and Bazzite will not crash regularly. And, while Fedora might fall a little short of providing as robust of an experience as you might find on Debian and Linux Mint (assuming you won't FrankenDebian your installs), Bazzite may actually rival (and perhaps even eclipse/surpass) Debian and Linux Mint in this respect.

This is a nuanced discussion that probably deserves more attention, but I'll keep it short for the sake of brevity. In Bazzite's case, strictly-speaking, immutability refers to how most of /usr's content isn't supposed to be changed deliberately by you. This is enforced by the system (in part) by making those files read-only.
In practice, though, there's very little you actually can't do with the system: - AFAIK, you're forced to use GRUB; which AFAIK is the most used bootloader anyways. Here's a thread discussing support for systemd-boot. - No support for UKI at the moment. But progress on this has been accelerated (relatively) recently; . - The situation around dkms/akmods still ain't great and leaves a lot to be desired; you're basically limited to the ones found here. Thankfully, this is something else that's actively being worked on. - While installing from Fedora's repository through bootc/rpm-ostree is possible, it's actually discouraged in Bazzite's case. Thankfully, there's a plethora of different means to the same end. Furthermore, sysext have come a long way and might become our go-to eventually.
From what I can tell, this is basically present (since the loader syntax is identical), except systemd-boot needs the loaders and kernels to be on the ESP (/boot/efi), not where OSTree places them ...

Perhaps you've already undertaken what I'm about to say, so please feel free to ignore this if that's the case: Have you reached out to their Discord server in hopes of resolving the issue? While their documentation is pretty great, it's possible that it ain't sufficient. Whenever that happens, the Discord community can (and probably will (at least in my experience)) step up and provide excellent guidance when prompted.

As far as what I could not get working, I was able to just set up mouse profiles to do mostly the same. Good enough of a workaround. It’s an old program separate from the game that seems to look at the active window to contain “Guild Wars 2” and if it is, hitting a button will change mouse clicks to whatever buttons. (And hitting certain buttons or not being in GW2 will disable that) so like… idk how Linux works but I feel that ain’t gonna happen without changing it, and the dev has fucked off 13 years ago (and I might be the literal only person still using it.)

Ah okay, thanks for the clarification! I have heard of that interaction elsewhere. Unsure if it's KDE Plasma misbehaving or otherwise. Regardless, I'm glad to hear that you were able to resolve the issue. I did find this discussion (which you may have found yourself as well). In their case, they (somehow) didn't properly create an account, which opens multiple can of worms you'd much rather not deal with. Thankfully, the fact that you were able to deal with the problem suggests that you should be fine 😉.
I tried to disable it, but the password I enter in doesn’t work (I know it is my admin password). A SSH pop up happens as well, enter password, goes away, then reappears. KDE Wallet pops up, click next, no key.
You want a semi or rolling release distro. Fedora is semi-rolling, would be the most user-friendly I think. Anything Arch-based but more user-friendly, like CachyOS, would be good as well. Tim leweed is rarely recommended unless you need like bleeding edge, which it doesn't sound like you really want.
While (I think) you can install HWE (hardware enablement) kernels on Mint, you would also have to upgrade Mesa, which is not as easy on Mint.
Personally in this case, for a truly stable distro, I’d install Debian Stable and install a backports kernel and backports Mesa, which are both currently versions that should support RDNA4 GPUs like OPs just fine. This involves two simple steps after installing: 1. Enable the Debian Backports Repo (see backports.debian.org/Instructi…). It’s like, one file. 2. Install the packages with something like sudo apt install -t bookworm-backports linux-image-amd64 mesa-va-drivers and reboot.
Before you take these steps, you probably won’t have hardware acceleration, but will still get video output so you can perform the steps and reboot.
This is definitely a weird suggestion, and other people’s suggestions might be less work out of the box. I just like Debian, and stability+backports+testing is part of what makes it possible for it to be my everything distro.
I just grabbed a 9060XT open box deal without thinking about driver support, I'm using Mint 22.1 as well. YMMV but I can't get any kernel besides 6.8 to boot, not even the Mint supported 6.11 HWE. Video output works but the drivers don't load and even scrolling down a webpage gives me screen tearing. I did get a more recent Mesa version with the kisak ppa but it hasn't helped. Can't even go above 60Hz refresh rate.
I tried Ubuntu 25.04 on a LiveUSB and it's basically plug and play and might have even automatically switched to the 144Hz monitor refresh rate.
I don't have a whole lot of time for getting a new distro set up right now. I will wait until Mint 22.2 (coming soon? with a newer kernel hopefully) and see how that goes.

LOL, I actually managed to do this with a broken spacebar. Half the bar was missing, so I took a completely different model scrap keyboard that was water damaged, carefully cut it in half, secured that with the original half with a couple paper clips and epoxy, and somehow even managed to make the stabilizer bar underneath line up and work.

Thats why after 3years of debian/kubuntu I switched to arch. But that doesn't mean anything. Just do kubuntu for now and if you have troube installing something ask the community and they will help you get it installed.

Agreed.Also, Windows and OSX, unless you want to have to call your nephew who's Good With Computers™ every couple of weeks. If you're just using a browser for everything and never messing around like a good majority of people, Linux is just as good as either of those. Linux has gotten to the point where it's Grandma proof if you stick to a distribution that prioritizes stability. If you choose a distro that prioritizes bleeding edge software versions, you may come across more bugs and breaking changes.Then you'll need the troubleshooting skills mentioned here. Most of us are here to learn and mess around; the troubleshooting skills grow from that mindset.

You actually make a great point. Really, for me it was mostly a quick idea because I had been musing about PeerTube's streaming capabilities in a different comment thread, and about how it leverages the P2P mechanism, so it was fresh on my mind that I wanted to stress-test my own server somehow (and I wanted to learn how to set-up OBS with chat and stuff for PeerTube). Then, while "working" on the canvas, I had the sudden: "Hey, I'd love to set my pixels while zoomed in, while also watching the whole field zoomed out"-thought ... but of course that would just as easily be possible by just having two browser windows open 🤷
If nothing else, I got some promising data showing my server can handle several people tuning in to live streams at the same time - and I am also using this to test how my server handles someone wanting to encode a 24h+ VOD from a stream, so that will be there, too - probably for another time-lapse in addition to the official ones.

I am currently aiming to try mint, as it has been recommended to be stable and i already dabbled a little bit with Ubuntu on my laptop.
I am not afraid of some tech journey, but even though arch seems the coolest, with Wayland, kde, hyperland customization, i am not confident enough to use it for work. I heard it can completely crash your system if your a noob.

Mint is a great choice, it is very stable, and it really holds your hand via the Software Center.
However, stable also means old: it does not support the latest hardware.
If you have hardware that released after (rough estimate) April 2024, consider something based on Fedora, such as Bazzite, instead. It comes with modern drivers and should support modern hardware much better.
Bazzite was heavenly promoted for gaming, but there was no mention on using it for work. Does it work well for regular productivity, code, graphic design, 3d?

You can crash anything if you try. Been there, done that. Just go ahead and start using it. Just keep backups which you always do, regardless the O/S and situation. (pro tip: TEST RESTORING THE BACKUPS)
Maybe make an extra backup before you try something and you'll live. You could also use a separate partition to store your files so you can re-install without touching your data. Make that partition size 'recognizable' (t.ex. the biggest by far and label it) so you won't mess up the partition selection when you re-install. And NO don't ask me how I know!
Yes Mint is a good choice for your migration. It has been put together in a way that makes it intuitive for a windows refugee. The menu layout has the "start" (mint) button bottom left with your apps in there.
The system apps are named obvious things like "software manager" and it has default apps installed to get you going.
Being derived from Ubuntu it is the best supported platform for commercial apps/games but with Ubuntu's weird choices (snap etc) tidied up.
It's the most recommended linux distro for beginners for a reason. It's a solid reliable well thought out platform
In my experience Fedora with GNOME is really use friendly and intuitive to use, and I've never borked it when not using the terminal. It also has a lot of extensions you can install to customise the experience, and almost everything can be done via a GUI.
I've had smooth sailing both with Fedora GNOME and Fedora KDE. And it's another "common choice" with good enterprise support thanks to Red Hat, just like Ubuntu and all their baby distros.
I'm not sure about unreal engine compatibility, but I've been using Fedora Silverblue and it works good enough. Sometimes I've seen graphical bugs, but they are fixed quick enough for me to not care too much. Since I use the computer for work (and I don't have much time to fiddle with my system) I have found that an atomic distro is the one that requires less maintenance, so it allows me to just do my work without having to troubleshoot things breaking. I have switched a lot of linux distros because I was never satisfied with how things looked or worked (and because of bugs with nvidia and other things, I am a long time linux user and things have never worked as smooth as today, now that we have wayland and proton and a lot of nice things). At the end of the day, I believe that the best thing to do is tho choose one of the most popular distros (Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, Arch) and make adjustments to fit your needs. Distro hopping is fun, but not so much when you're short on time and you have stuff to do. Hope this helps.
I doubt that would help, sadly. There is SO MUCH advice out there already, but people always think they are special and have a very rare and complicated use case.
I think Fedora using either Gnome or KDE would be a great place for you to start. Ubuntu or Mint aren’t terrible choices either.
On the topic of Arch, there’s a Distro I use called EndeavourOS. It’s billed as an Arch based distro that’s geared towards the terminal, but unlike Arch it comes all of the basic software you might need right out of the box, and offers a long list of desktop environments (KDE, Gnome, and XFCE being the best choices on the list)
I use Hyprland on it, but Hyprland isnt advisable until you have some solid experience with a different desktop. Because it is geared towards the terminal, it expects you to install and update your software from the terminal. Not a difficult task, but it might not be ideal when you’re just getting started.
I’ve been running it for a long time without issue. But how “stable” it is depends on how much you read the documentation and developer announcements, and how much you fiddle with things you don’t understand. That can be true in mint or Ubuntu as well, none of them prevent you from breaking things.
Recently endeavour changed the way they deal with some firmware related packages, this would cause an error when updating, causing a handful of packages to not be upgraded. A quick DuckDuckGo search of the error message took me straight to a forum post by the devs explaining that you have to uninstall one of the related packages, and run the update again. If you didn’t think to look you’d probably panic and think your system was broken. Just an example of how the operating system itself doesn’t hold your hand. It’s up to you whether that’s acceptable or not.
On the topic of stability, save your important files on a separate drive. It’s been said elsewhere in the thread but bears repeating. As long as your files are stored in a separate drive, if you run into issues you aren’t able to fix, you can just wipe and reinstall, it maybe takes 20 minutes depending on your hardware, and while you’re experimenting and learning, it wouldn’t be uncommon for you to break some things.

Actually, that was Arch and as Endeavour uses the Arch repositories + the AUR, and their own repository for their additions, they were naturally affected.
If you run endeavour, you are basically getting Arch with a familiar installer, a few useful helper scripts, and a friendly community. You are still expected to know your hardware and your install. You are still expected to keep up with the Arch news, and make any manual interventions required. If you do that, endeavour is remarkably reliable.
Thanks for the advice, I will go ahead with trying mint first. Then a fedora to compare performance and a separate partition/drive for messing up arch/endeavour. Just have to disable bitlocker... Because that's how my last mint experience ended up xD
If Mint works for you, just stick with it. No need to try a different distribution to compare. You'll know when you need it.
I would only go to Fedora if you need it. For example newer drivers (kernel, mesa). Don't go change the kernel and/or mesa on a distribution, probably better to switch at that point. Or if you need KDE or GNOME for some reason. Wayland is disabled in Mint by default, but can be enabled. It's been over a year IIRC since they added experimental Wayland support so it may be fine by now.
Differences between Linux distributions are exaggerated.
Mint is great. It may not work for you if you have super new hardware.
Fedora is great. It’s mint but with newer stuff.
Arch is great. Bleeding edge. But it’s not “set it and forget it”.
Linux is great. There’s a million other options. Any of them work if they work for you. Find someone bashing Ubuntu - they would HAPPILY choose Ubuntu over win11.
And you have to realize the “what version I’m on dependency hell” thing is a thing of the past for the most part. Flatpaks just about solve this problem. You’ve got containers and vms too. Switching to another distro ain’t hard either as a nuclear option.
Just install mint or fedora like everyone says. Your requirements aren’t special, and both options are great.

You're not special and Linux distros aren't that specialized. They differ in packaging, upgrade philosophy, etc. There is no Linux distro that can't do the things others do.
You dabbled with Ubuntu. Stick with it, you'll be fine. Unless you really want mint, then go for it you'll be fine.
The urge to distrohop can be a distraction, but an itch that needs to be scratched now and then. I tend to always end up where I started, but when I do I feel better about it.
I would go with something ubuntu based or fedora. If you want to learn then Bazziteos may not be for you since it's ridiculously easy to figure stuff out on there. Instead, you might enjoy learning a system where you type some commands in the terminal like fedora or linux mint
If you're new to Linux, you won't stay with the distro anyone recommends for more than a month. It's a truism.

That said. Ubuntu isn't the Ubuntu of old. The real selling point is the zfs, but you have all the other NIH stuff like snap etc. I'm not a zfs fan but I appreciate that it's got a huge fan base.
One thing to say is that you don't have to have a one and only. I have at least two distros I use daily for workstation stuff. I use Fedora for typing and Arch for backups, debugging, rescue, and other fiddling about stuff (because Fedora gets in the way sometimes). Every distro has the same set of commands.
Coming from Windows, OK with a bit of tech journey and into gaming here is my take in no order of preference.
1) TuxedoOS if you are inclined to Debian/Ubuntu side. Slow updates but it has latest KDE and very stable in my experience. 2) If you just want set and forget (minimal updates) Linux Mint (Ubuntus fall here too) Now, it is not very appealing aesthetics. 3) Fedora. Probably the best overall, but if you have beef against IBM/Red Hat, ditch it, its superiority is very marginal. Gamers like the spin Nobara, some performance increase but minimal. 4) Arch is not that unstable as portrayed, but one time in a critical time is bad enough, even if very rarely occurs. You assess your risk. The popular baby today is Arch's CachyOS due to catering to gamers. 5) OpenSUSE's Tumbleweed is maintained quite good and very close to Fedora in being perfect overall, but fewer people behind and less support. I would only go with it if you have a specific reason why (German, Yast tools, rolling release but stable,...)
At the end, like many people say, it is likely you will hop... until one day you find that distro hoping is pointless and that all are actually very close to each other and could easily coexist with any of them all. The difficult and uncompromising aspect usually is with the desktop environment like KDE Plasma, Gnome, Cinnamon...

While I have no experience with Unreal Engine, so I can't give an informed recommendation, I just figured I'd point out that you can do this with every distro
I don't recommend Bazzite. I'm far from an expert (I've only used Mint), but I see a lot of people recommending Bazzite. You should definitely test on Bazzite, but it's immutable and so that'll probably cause a lot of issues. I'd recommend strongly against Bazzite for gamedev.
I think basically any major distro will work (Ubuntu, Mint, OpenSUSE, Arch). ~~You'll probably need to run the software in bottles, so if it supports bottles then it should work for your needs~~. Only go with Arch if you're willing to sign up for some extra work.
Be sure to make backups. That way it won't matter if you brick your OS.
EDIT: It supports Linux, I was on the wrong page. ~~It explicitly supports Red Hat (Fedora) and Rocky Linux, OpenSUSE is similar to them, so go with one of those three I guess.~~
EDIT 2: They recommend Ubuntu. Test on Ubuntu and Rocky. I'd go with Rocky just because I hate Ubuntu (on an emotional level, I don't think they're evil or anything).
Oh I see, when you go straight to the Epic Games Store page it doesn't have a download for Linux and doesn't even say Linux is supported.
But that link says Red Hat Linux 8 or Rocky Linux 8, so OP should probably use Fedora or Rocky. Rocky's a bit of a no-name though so forum support might be lacking.
when a particular distro is recommended, almost every time it just means "this is what we have actually tested it on" so as long as your distro has the correct packages/versions available there is a very good chance it will work even when not recommended
It is immutable but ships with distrobox and boxbuddy, which lets you easily create linux containers with mutable systems (i.e. I am currently developing on a fedora container with Qt Creator, for example) and you can install your packages in that terminal.
No chances of breaking your main OS.
I set up my instance like follows:
Boxbuddy -> New distrobox container -> Fedora -> Give it a name.
Wait for the installation (should be about 300MB IIRC).
In the start menu you will now be able to run your instance's terminal (search for your instance name).
sudo dnf install qt-creator
Back in boxbuddy, in my instance I selected "show installed gui applications", selected Qt Creator -> Add to applications menu.
Qt Creator then shows up in the start menu (search for either Qt Creator, or your instance name).
It will run in the container, but has full access to your home directory for development.
I could then install all my other required packages from the same terminal that I installed qt-creator from.
Easy peasy.
Disclaimer: Typing from my phone. The instructions may not be exactly like I said, but those are the steps.
No terminal magic is needed in Bazzite to make this work.
For the new people on Linux, think of my impression playing with the different OS;
Similarities between Windows 10 and macOS is around 15%.
Similarities between Windows 10 and Linux Mint is around 20%.
Similarities between Linux Mint and Ubuntu is around 95%.
Similarities between Linux Mint and Fedora\OpenSUSE is around 90%.
Similarities between Linux Mint and Arch\CachyOS\Manjaro is around 85%.
And with Flatpaks/Snaps I would even now narrow the difference in the Linus OS as 95, 92 and 90% similarity. For what linux cannot do for you, unless it needs high processing or gaming anticheats, a Virtual Machine with Windows will just cover you without any problem.
What makes look different in Linux is the desktop environment (KDE, Gnome, Cinnamon...), no much the distro per se. Find the distro environment you like after playing 20min with it, and choose the Linux flavor you are ideologically/persuaded with the most... don't worry about the rest.
I want to recommend pop OS but it would be wise to switch to it after there is 24.04 (or later release)
In my personal experience pop os has been absolute rock solid especially with flatpaks However latest stable is quite old (they are working on new desktop environment before upgrade).

It's rare that a software compatibility is distribution specific but just in case for games you can verify with ProtonDB and for the rest WineHQ AppDB. That's assuming there is no native support which in this case according to a quick DuckDuckGo search returns linuxvox.com/blog/unreal-engin… indicating that it seems fine.
So... I'd suggest you pick whatever distribution you heard most about, if you are unsure I'd advise on Debian (Stable) but honestly I don't think it matters much. There might be slight difference in hardware support and performances but assuming you use mainstream hardware it hopefully should have minimal impact.
Regardless of what you choose, document the process and as long as you learn while doing it, you're going forward!
If you are in rush... maybe postpone the transition to after that project or do it with a 2nd computer.
Unreal Engine is a powerful and widely - used game engine developed by Epic Games. While it is well - known for its support on Windows and macOS, the Linux version of Unreal Engine also offers significant advantages.
Update: installed mint and i am excited so far. didn't test unreal yet, but gaming perf was great. Customization is really cool and i already got it to look modern with some theme icon combinations. Made a 🥭 in gimp as my home icon. Ran into very little issues so far. Except for one, where suspend instantly wakes up the pc and is therefore unusable. But i will figure that out another day.
Definitely update us on UE, I've haven't explored the EU or Unity on Linux, and it would be nice to know if they work, because "you can use Godot" doesn't work for everyone.

Is this just an automatic suspend after inactivity? Because if so, I think it the inactivity timeout can be disabled in the settings menu, as a workaround until you can figure it out.
I got unreal working by simply unzipping the binaries you can download. It runs great, i would argue even faster then on windows (lumen enabled). Building an app in Linux worked out of the box. Some minor issues i had, left alt did not work. Figuring out how to make a launcher icon. After an update it needed new driver update aswell. Still no IDE to use C++ currently trying Rider.
Much better than I'd expected, that's great to hear! The minor bugs are always annoying, but like you mentioned, the speed boost hopefully outweighs it.
I’m looking at suse tumbleweed for an upcoming build. Ubuntu is getting obnoxious, mint is ugly and way behind on Wayland support and fedora I can’t really trust at this point as it’s a community version of a corporate American product. Like I could ignore the corporate stink before but -gestures broadly- not in this climate.
I liked arch but now that bcacheFS is getting yanked out of the kernel I don’t really have a reason to manually do so much myself anymore.
For example I would selfhost Mastodon with me@fedi.com but then decide to change the server software to GoToSocial but keep the same me@fedi.com. Would everyone who was following me@fedi.com keep me in their follower list or would whole fediverse crash?

I also changed the URL from jemmy.jeena.net to piefed.jeena.net because I don't want the other instances to be confused when suddenly a different software with different contents is available under the same domain. But I'm thinking to start up Lemmy and unsubscribe from all communities and to delete the one community I have on my Lemmy instance which has only very few subscribers.
That at least would be a somewhat clean way to dispose of this lemmy instance. Oh and I should return a 410 Gone to indicate that it's permanently gone.

is not it; if that could make the whole fediverse crash, someone could do it maliciously. At most it will cause problems delivering your messages or delivering messages to you.
It definitely depends on the software, for example in matrix you can easily cause federation issues in some cases. this won't blow up the fediverse, but it could impact the user experience if they rely on or interact with that instance.

Apart from that I am looking for a solution to a personal issue (see my other comment), I posted this because I was thinking this could be a great way to support other new Linux users and friends.
When I tried RustDesk it was not able to easily function on headless systems, including servers and my desktop PC if the monitor was powered off. Has that changed?
Anydesk and Teamviewer don't have that problem, but both companies have had hacking incidents and Teamviewer actually blamed their users instead of taking responsibility. Allowing 3rd parties of any type remote access to my computers is IMO just asking for trouble, especially for always-on systems.
Wireguard plus VNC isn't as seamless but it works fine the vast majority of the time. When I occasionally need features that VNC doesn't support, NoMachine is a full-featured, free for non-commercial use alternative that works great with WG.
Edit: It looks like the latest release of NoMachine now offers a intermediate network service that operates like Teamviewer and Anydesk. Access via intermediate network ID is not enabled by default, so with it disabled it should theoretically be more secure than the other apps.
I remote to a Mint on a laptop with a closed screen, and pop_OS that doesn't have a screen. (Second one has my jellyfin server). Connecting from my android phone and even my Windows laptop at my last job
Yeah if you still run into an issue for some reason add a virtual monitor in Windows, or "sudo rustdesk --option allow-linux-headless Y" (it's in the GUI as well) and it should take care of it, but I haven't had to do that
Ah, I haven't tried Apple products. Works with Mint, Android, PopOS, Debian, without any tinkering in my experience. I remote from my phone to my media server/laptop/and other junk when needed.
I was talking with my brother who was supporting our mother on her Windows laptop. He was using TeamViewer for years but that company now requires to subscribe to an expensive license on top of this is a really security- and privacy-sensitive kind of access.
His main requirements are that the new solution are:

very easy to use for the supported person
better works without VPN, public ports etc though this isn't mandatory.
So, it needs to be easy. I was first thinking in VNC but while I have been using TigerVNC for years in Home Office, this looks not exactly as easy as TeamViewer.
Last week was talking with our stand-in admin at work who turns out to know Linux well. He said he has very good experiences with RustDesk, uses it for home office and also for remotely accessing Windows machines.
There was some concerns about where it was being developed, I think it's entirely Chinese devs.

Such attacks against infrastructure are to be taken serious. But the xz-utils case and Stuxnet also have shown a few things:
Such attacks are incredibly time-consuming and expensive to mount.
Once sn attacker hits such a target, they have blown their powder - they can't continue to use it.
The xz-utils case shows that open source's many-eyed principle works astoundingly well.
xz-utils also confirms that in open source software, you can close a detected backdoor within hours - even if the maintainer of the software does not want that, since you can fork it in seconds. (And using Rust only makes this easier).
So, this topic of foreign state-actor backdoors is less a thing for individuals to worry about. (I agree that lawmakers of democratic states should absolutely worry about this, here a good article be Bert Hubert on the topic.)
However what is actually dangerous is the erosion of privacy and the rising amount of mandated surveillance. But if one is worried about that, one should not use closed-source software in the first place.
I also avoided it for some of these reasons, but in the end it was just the setup that got messy. I ended up using Sunshine/Moonlight for an overall nicer experience. I can use it to stream games if I’ve got a good connection, or toss it in low bandwidth mode for remote admin work. I run it behind Tailscale to access it from anywhere, it supports Wayland, it’s all fully open source, and I’m very happy with the setup.
I host Apache Guacamole on my server, and then VNC/RDP/SSH on the various PCs and servers on my network, so I can connect to them from anywhere, as long as I have a browser, my password manager and my 2-factor auth.
I have used many different RDP's, but RustDesk seems the best option. Yesterday I had to configure my Steam Deck and I am glad that RustDesk can be found in the Discover software manager.
I ran a Rustdesk server and it is constantly unreliable. It's very likely it's my fault and I lack the skills to fix it. I just decided to use Anydesk instead.

So if you do the Docker setup, obeying the instructions and substituting everything that needs to get substituted, but don't proofread the files in detail and so miss that line 40 of docker-compose.yml doesn't have the variable {{domain}} like in every other location you need to write your domain, but instead just says LEMMY_UI_LEMMY_EXTERNAL_HOST=lemmy.ml and so you fail to change it away from lemmy.ml... then, everything will work, until you type in your admin password for the first time, at which point your browser will send a request to lemmy.ml which includes your admin username, your email address, and the admin password you're trying to set. And, also, of course your IP address wherever you are sitting and setting up the server.
I have no reason at all to think the Lemmy devs have set their server up to log this information when it comes in. nginx will throw it away by default, of course, but it would be easy for them to have it save it instead, if they wanted to. And my guess is most people won't use a different admin password once they figure out why creating their admin user isn't working and fix it.

And for anyone asking "Why are we boycotting/blocking lemmy.ml?" Here's a quick recap:
Lemmy.ml is an instance run by admins who are hardcore tankies and will enforce their ideology on their instance through various means from allowing (and pushing it themselves) propaganda (Such as Russia being justified in some way to invade Ukraine) and known propaganda outlets (Like RT) to removing content on their instance critical of their favored authoritarian regimes such as Russia or China and even banning users for such speech or speech critical of them if it's off their instance (Just like the Reddit mods of ol!).
If it was just some random instance it would have been defederated from long ago like the rest of the "Tankie Triad" (Hexbear and Lemmygrad), but they've positioned lemmy.ml as the "flagship" instance and abused that position and influence to become large enough to keep other instances from defederating from them.
Which I believe is harmful to the Lemmy-verse's overall growth and outside reputation. I have seen it come up before on Reddit threads (and other testimonials from people who came back and tried it again) that "They tried Lemmy but it was a bunch of tankies and went back to Reddit"
I don't know about you, but I'd prefer Lemmy to not end up with the reputation for being "Tankie Central " or even worse "Voat 2.0".

I have a special syringe for this. I had impacted ear wax a few years ago and I went to urgent care to get it rinsed. Turns out my other ear was also impacted, just not as bad. After the rinse, I could hear in 3D. I felt like I shouldn't have been allowed to drive home because it felt like I was on acid it was so overwhelming. This project has been discontinued and the repo archived. I am done with Lemmy, the Fediverse as a whole, and have no desire to continue developing for the platform or (especially) the demographic thereof.

The specific "burned out" is a common killer among folks that try this: community management

I can't say I blame them. People can be horrible. Managing a community also means managing the worst of people. I had a former employer that did community management of a dating site. The level of mental trauma the front line workers endured was more than I could imagine. This is also why I completely understand instance admins that follow an aggressive blocking/banning approach. Beehaw put up tall walls and defederated aplenty. Blahaj.zone actively bans based upon user activity that is even on other unrelated instances. I can't fault either of these approaches because the alternative is dealing with the worst users en masse.
I hope that instance owner/manager gets some of that much deserved rest.
Sounds like someone wasn't prepared for the reality of human interaction on the internet. I mean its completely fair to say that they don't want to deal with it, but also what did they expect?
When you moderate a platform that the public is free to upload anything to, you will see everything. From insults to threats to gore to CSAM. Thats how the internet is. That is the worst part in my opinion, because you cant just look away, but actually have to deal with it.
I agree with you. However, I don't think most people understand that. For most folks they haven't been exposed to the most mentally darkest souls among us.
This really is a complicated problem, but if the fediverse wants to grow without relying on slave labor for moderation like Meta and the rest, then we have to find ways to lighten the load on moderators. Thats why creating transparent pre moderation tools like the image scanners used by many fediverse instances is so important.
This one is a very basic CSAM scanner that goes through lemmy image storage and just deletes stuff it deems bad. github.com/db0/fedi-safety I havent tried it tho, so i cant attest to its quality.
Im sure there are tools made for mastodon too, since it has a lot more users.
I totally have to disagree. Instance owners are attacked here on Lemmy for trying to keep their instance in line with the local laws where they live. You know, which they totally have to keep free of legal trouble that might cost them a lot of time, money or even put them into jail. It's not great when admins have to deal with utter idiots in their free time. Remember the whole Nicole fiasco where some poor girl was harassed via a spam attack? Remember that spam attack with the scat porn? All this hate going around with the war in the middle east? I can totally understand why someone burns out dealing with this crap in their free time. Come home from work after a hard day. Another scat spam attack you have to deal with. Another Hamas sympathizer calling you genocide lover because you deleted his propaganda. Someone else attacking you because you removed content that is illegal where you live and you hope that no authority saw it before you deleted it. Go to bed. Go to work. Repeat.
We arent really in disagreement tho. I am absolutely empathetic with their situation and their burnout. Im just saying they should have seen it coming. Those two things arent contradictory. I just find it odd how one can invest so much time into a public project, without being aware of the realities of having to moderate it. Im thankful for the people that host instances, but i will never do it, because i know how much of a pain it is.
Not sure if "they should have seen it coming" really is the way to think about this. Yes, moderation is hard. Yes, it makes sense to build a team doing moderation. But let's be honest, Lemmy is insaner than other forums due to its federated structure.
Since you're on the same instance as me, I assume you are a mod/admin there. Let me use this opportunity to say thank you to you and all the other mods on feddit.org for helping to keep that place one of the most pleasant online spaces I've come across in my years on the internet. As far as I can tell from the outside you and the others are doing a great job.
A bit offtopic, but why would anyone want to keep their instance in line with local laws? Aren't internet sites operating under jurisdiction of where they are hosted? Or is it just some coincidence that those people decided to host their stuff at datacenters at their local proximity? When I'm choosing hosting the first thing I think about: "hmmm I shouldn't host in country where I live because I don't want to ever have any problem with local authorities, and if I host elsewhere authorities there won't be able to reach me physically so the worst thing that could happen is the site gets shut down".
There are multiple reasons: If you want to fund your instance by donations, you need to be able to act under your real name. You might get away with a totally anonymous instance which you are funding via cryptodonations and which you are hosting at a provider who really does not care about KYC, but that is also illegal in many jurisdictions. There is totally a case for a lemmy instance admin to be known publically, to be able to interact with the community in person, to be able to go to meetups or to be able to give talks at conventions.
And if you are not living in some country with totally crazy politics, most local laws are totally fine. Do not post hardcore pornography. Do not spread hatred or calls for murder and hate speach. Keep the piracy a little bit less obvious. Don't allow hardcore pornography and have a solid process to keep child porn from your platform. That might be different if you're living in Iran, Saudi-Arabia or Afghanistan, but in a western country it is totally ok to be in line with local laws.

I'd rather ensure that I have something a bit more concrete to show before I "announce" it. First impressions matter a lot. I started reading that because I want to learn more about systemd and ended up wanting to go back to DOS. Presumably it all makes sense, but when I tried to read it my brain stopped working and my eyes slid off the bottom of the screen.

I mean, Kubernetes shows that yaml can work, but in this day and age I'd expect several options for serialisation, and for the default to be binary, not strings.
String serialisations are primarily for humans IMO, either as readers or writers. As writers we want something with comments (and preferably no "find the missing }" game), so for that most of us would prefer something like TOML if the data is simple enough, and actually Yaml for complexity at the level of Kubernetes—JSON manages to be even more of a PITA at that level.
But machine-to-machine? Protobuf, cap'n'proto, postcard, even CBOR should all be alternatives to examine
JSON is not the optimal solution for either humans nor for machines... it's a compromise in-between that is more complex to parse than most binary alternatives (and even some text-based ones, if the data can be represented in CSV tables for example), while also often requiring post-processing through beautifiers and similar to be able to visualize it cleanly for humans.
There are situations where it's the format that makes the most sense.. like in the web, where you are already working with javascript anyway. But it's not a golden bullet to use everywhere.
Yeah, JSON is essentially a side effect of having JavaScript already. It makes sense that it shows up a lot of places, especially web. But just like with JS, it's not really good, just ubiquitous.
That was a lot of really good info. I've been having to deal with some more complex systemd configurations at work which has gotten me interested in the subject. This was a really good intro and will help a lot in my own self-hosted activities as well as work.

I'm unironically curious. it's a bad platform no matter how you look at it: it's closed for unregistered readers, it's typesetting sucks ass... the only reason I could see, is if the authors actually get some of the ad revenue, in which case I'd much rather pay directly to the authors.
Yes, I do get paid. Sometimes considerably (for what tech writing can provide).
Indeed, writing tech articles on Medium has allowed me to get some extra income/free-time in between jobs, which I use to upskill myself and then share what I learn with the community (with some amount of friction regarding the paywall). This self-reinforcing loop is quite appealing to me, and - I would argue - aligns somewhat with my take on the Kantian categorical imperative.
For what it's worth, I like the typesetting. Medium also has extremely good SEO, likely from some direct negotiation with search engines, I assume. Eventually I plan to move my tech writings to my own blog, with some sort of minimal ad system, no paywalls. Also, I usually unpaywall my tech articles after the window of high income dries up.

(I realize AMD changing their naming yet again makes that confusing.)

Mint deliberately uses an LTS kernel because it's primary value proposition is stability & simplicity but changing kernels is pretty safe.

I personally wouldn't do the arse-ache that is an immutable system, but plenty here love their Bazzite it seems. Different strokes for different folks. Nothing wrong with that.
If you love Mint except for the kernel version then it's an easy fix. If you don't have deep feelings then either try & be ready to ditch, or pick an alternative.
Just for the record there is no "doing all that" about it. It's a simple couple of clicks. It couldnt be easier. I'm not sure where you got the idea it was difficult.

Stable can mean a bunch of different stuff that may or may not be closely related. In the case of Debian, it's the name of its default release; the one in which packages are frozen for two years except for security patches. (Note that this naming scheme is not unique to Debian.) As such, a Debian installation will be unchanging for these two years, earning its stable designation (which, to be clear, just meaning unchanging in this context). Finally, this unchanging environment should provide a ton of stability (i.e. stuff just works), which is also referred to as stable. These three distinct meanings of stable are probably the ones you'll come across the most.
The bold part is a clear demonstration that you understood stable to mean strictly robust; i.e. the third meaning discussed above. And to be clear, Fedora does a decent job at providing a reliable experience. (Bazzite even more so.) But not all three meanings of stable apply to it:
- For Fedora (and thus Bazzite by extension), the only stable repository is the one used to create its ISOs (i.e. the images used for installation). Beyond this, some packages are frozen within a release/version; e.g. you'll never get a major release update for GNOME unless you do a major release update for Fedora. But..., that's basically it; (almost) all other packages receive regular updates. As such, Fedora is often referred to as a semi-rolling release distro instead (as opposed to Debian being referred to as a stable release distro). So, to be clear, Fedora and Bazzite are NOT stable in this context.
- As (most of) its packages receive regular updates, it isn't unchanging either. And thus, NOT stable in this context as well.
- However, in terms of offering a robust/reliable experience, Fedora is pretty good. Bazzite is even better due to its atomicity^[That is, updates either happen successfully or not at all. So a random power outage (or otherwise) is not able to break the system's integrity.] and the superior distro-management allowed by the
bootcmodel.So, to answer your question, Fedora and Bazzite will not crash regularly. And, while Fedora might fall a little short of providing as robust of an experience as you might find on Debian and Linux Mint (assuming you won't FrankenDebian your installs), Bazzite may actually rival (and perhaps even eclipse/surpass) Debian and Linux Mint in this respect.
For your purposes, I agree that going for the Bazzite-route seems to be the easiest.
This is a nuanced discussion that probably deserves more attention, but I'll keep it short for the sake of brevity. In Bazzite's case, strictly-speaking, immutability refers to how most of
/usr's content isn't supposed to be changed deliberately by you. This is enforced by the system (in part) by making those files read-only.In practice, though, there's very little you actually can't do with the system:
- AFAIK, you're forced to use GRUB; which AFAIK is the most used bootloader anyways. Here's a thread discussing support for systemd-boot.
- No support for UKI at the moment. But progress on this has been accelerated (relatively) recently; .
- The situation around dkms/akmods still ain't great and leaves a lot to be desired; you're basically limited to the ones found here. Thankfully, this is something else that's actively being worked on.
- While installing from Fedora's repository through
bootc/rpm-ostreeis possible, it's actually discouraged in Bazzite's case. Thankfully, there's a plethora of different means to the same end. Furthermore, sysext have come a long way and might become our go-to eventually.systemd-boot support

The "force me to enter a password any time I open my browser"-thing seems like unintended behavior. Pretty strange. Glad to hear that it has been resolved, though.
Perhaps you've already undertaken what I'm about to say, so please feel free to ignore this if that's the case: Have you reached out to their Discord server in hopes of resolving the issue? While their documentation is pretty great, it's possible that it ain't sufficient. Whenever that happens, the Discord community can (and probably will (at least in my experience)) step up and provide excellent guidance when prompted.

As far as what I could not get working, I was able to just set up mouse profiles to do mostly the same. Good enough of a workaround. It’s an old program separate from the game that seems to look at the active window to contain “Guild Wars 2” and if it is, hitting a button will change mouse clicks to whatever buttons. (And hitting certain buttons or not being in GW2 will disable that) so like… idk how Linux works but I feel that ain’t gonna happen without changing it, and the dev has fucked off 13 years ago (and I might be the literal only person still using it.)

Regardless, I'm glad to hear that you were able to resolve the issue. I did find this discussion (which you may have found yourself as well). In their case, they (somehow) didn't properly create an account, which opens multiple can of worms you'd much rather not deal with. Thankfully, the fact that you were able to deal with the problem suggests that you should be fine 😉.

in reply to TowardsTheFuture • • •While (I think) you can install HWE (hardware enablement) kernels on Mint, you would also have to upgrade Mesa, which is not as easy on Mint.
Personally in this case, for a truly stable distro, I’d install Debian Stable and install a backports kernel and backports Mesa, which are both currently versions that should support RDNA4 GPUs like OPs just fine. This involves two simple steps after installing:
1. Enable the Debian Backports Repo (see backports.debian.org/Instructi…). It’s like, one file.
2. Install the packages with something like
sudo apt install -t bookworm-backports linux-image-amd64 mesa-va-driversand reboot.Before you take these steps, you probably won’t have hardware acceleration, but will still get video output so you can perform the steps and reboot.
This is definitely a weird suggestion, and other people’s suggestions might be less work out of the box. I just like Debian, and stability+backports+testing is part of what makes it possible for it to be my everything distro.

YMMV but I can't get any kernel besides 6.8 to boot, not even the Mint supported 6.11 HWE. Video output works but the drivers don't load and even scrolling down a webpage gives me screen tearing. I did get a more recent Mesa version with the kisak ppa but it hasn't helped. Can't even go above 60Hz refresh rate.
I tried Ubuntu 25.04 on a LiveUSB and it's basically plug and play and might have even automatically switched to the 144Hz monitor refresh rate.
I don't have a whole lot of time for getting a new distro set up right now. I will wait until Mint 22.2 (coming soon? with a newer kernel hopefully) and see how that goes.
