When I retired from my job back in 2022 I was given the option to keep my current health insurance provided by the Company.
Of course since I was no longer an active employee this basically meant I had never-ending #COBRA.
$980.00 a month for just me. Single. No dependents. That was #Credence #BlueCrossBlueShield of Georgia. And my Company (a large electric utility) was actually self-insured. Credence/ #BCBS just managed the #healthcare #plan.
That didn't last long. So I got an insurance plan from the Healthcare #Exchange.
Turns out Georgia has really really shitty healthcare plans on the exchange.
Ended up going BACK to my Company's health insurance for 2023.
Turns out none of the doctors I wanted to see out here accepted #CredenceBCBS.
So I signed up with a local health insurance plan out here in New Mexico. #Presbyterian. I wanted to see Presbyterian doctors so I figured if anything Presbyterian would accept their own insurance.
At least it was cheaper. $750 a month as opposed to $980.
That's what I did for 2024. And I had to pay $750 because I was technically not a New Mexico resident for most of 2024.
But now I am.
And turns out based on my income now (which isn't much) I qualify for some amazing subsidies.
My same Presbyterian insurance for 2025 is going to cost me $127 a month. I could even get it down to $21 a month but that means I have more of a yearly cap for things.
I wish nothing more that we had #SinglePayer healthcare. Something like the #UK's #NHS.

In Clare we did most of our shopping in the small Amish stores, or, if needed, at Witbeck's which is a family-owned grocery. I haven't been able to find any stores like that around here. Surely there must be, though, somewhere...? But if we have to drive 20 miles than that's what we will do I guess. We did find some wonderful deals though, probably the best one was some chopped beef bacon! Pete can't eat pork, and I have dozens of packages of chopped pork bacon that I use in so many things, we saw that they had some just like mine only beef for $4.99/5#, then the meat guy told us that they also sell those at 20# for $9.99 - WOW!!! So we have that in our freezer now. We also got salmon @ $5.49/2# - it wasn't wild-caught but we bought it for the dogs and they will be getting small amounts every so often, not a staple of their diet or anything... We got a lot of good stuff, anyway, and did much better than we do at any of the big chain stores. anyone ever deal with chewy.com for #pet supplies and do they suck hugely or is it just me? placed an order, they confirmed and charged my card, but sent me an email saying i need to reply to the email or call in. i used an email mask, so by replying i would give away my actual address. so i called them from the google number i used. they said ok cool we'll remove the hold and you'll get a confirmation email. never got the confirmation and can't login to their site to track my order. fuck all these corporate website. fuck the internet. this shit is getting worse every day.

@Survival_Is_Insufficient lufenuron. It's on-label for cats and dogs but not actively still marked for cats by the major pet pharma companies, only smaller ones. It's a juvenile growth hormone inhibitor, not a pesticide, so it doesn't kill existing adult fleas but breaks the cycle. Juv growth inhibitors are considered much safer. Fleas are part of the tapeworm life cycle so cats and dogs should be monitored for tapeworms or treated preemptively. ultimatefleadestructionmission… (not associated)
@Survival_Is_Insufficient (Not an animal doctor myself but this advise was given by a vet... some animals, especially collies, and some humans, are don't metabolize some compounds and so are sensitive to pesticides... the "possible side-effects" listed on the package happen... but lufenuron has worked great for me, for cats with catio access and on-leash outside time)

I honestly don't know what the political blowback is for that (we know money is the fuel of politics - Citizens United, etc, etc.). But if Centrist Democrats were already willing to dance on the edges then its unlikely to be THAT strong a headwind.
