My take: the thing you have to understand is that the ruling class doesn't believe there is such a thing as social murder. If I am feeling generous, I'd grant them it is more akin to manslaughter. The goal is profit, the mass death is simply a side effect. One key insight of Adam Smith is that socially beneficial results do not require deliberate virtuous intent. But likewise evil effects do not require deliberate, vicious intent.

So whatever you want to call it, that's a lot of death.

Far more than I consider acceptable. And i still accept numbers higher than zero.

@violetmadder I...am fairly desensitized to this. This has been my life outside my family since I was 12. Indifference generally is nothing to me. There's no point is dwelling on how an entire society doesn't care if you or your brother lives or dies because it judged your life valueless. At some point you accept that is, either for now or forever, the way of the world. A government does the same thing and makes the same calculations when deciding this or that medically. So single payer will not bring an end to this at all.

There are no easy, comfortable answers to this. Unless you're in some kind of rarefied group, this is at least to some degree ones lot in life. I also try to remember more suffer than I, and have more cause for rage than I.

Ah neat, Dynamicland has a new intro video (well, new as of August, 2024) where Bret Victor explains the idea of communal computing that Dynamicland has co-created as a proof of concept as well as Realtalk, the programming paradigm that Dynamicland uses.

This video is probably the best representation of what Dynamicland is, without being spatially present and able to interactively co-create with others in the physical space and with others that I have seen so far:

youtube.com/watch?v=5Q9r-AEzRM…

I only visited the physical space in Oakland once and I guess since the pandemic, maybe it doesn't exist where it did previously? (checks website, apparently they are working on building a new space in Berkeley, California for "communal science" at present: https://dynamicland.org/2024/The_communal_science_lab.pdf) I remain fascinated by the potential of such things and hope to see such paradigms become more widespread.

To me, Dynamicland was way cooler than the sorts of interfaces Minority Report showed on screen through the wonders of Hollywood "magic" (and a big special effects budget).

IIRC, even though Dynamicland have their own programming language paradigm Realtalk; the core kernel was implemented in Lua? It seems as if Realtalk-2024 is maybe looking to shed its previous prototype bootstrapping languages and become self hosting? (More about that here: https://dynamicland.org/2024/FAQ/#Is_Realtalk_a_programming_language)

Regardless, super amazing stuff! Probably the coolest tech I have seen in decades. It's difficult for me to get excited about a lot of the stuff I see, but Dynamicland was actually awesome, not just a "gee whiz" tech demo.

@poopernova willingly because she was going to be an orphan and have a shitty life otherwise. The other one he's showing is an Isekai (if it's the one I'm thinking of) x pro gamer isekai'ed as a Loli and who magic is very weak healing spells and is drafted for WW1 style trench warfare and whores commander is a battle crazy psychopath that has as much SYMPATHY or care for his men as Hannibal Lectur had for those he was about to eat.

In my dreams last night for whatever reason, I seemed to be stuck at a job at one of my old employers?

In particular, I was interacting with a guy who was (while we worked together) their lead dev and somehow I was kind of letting him have a piece of my mind in ways that I never uttered while we worked together.

Specifically, that place was the only employer I have ever had which was brain dead enough to waste money on M$-SQL. They even spent over $60,000.00 USD (in circa 2004 dollars) on a "cluster" (which was basically just two Windows Servers, with an overpriced Dell/EMC back end SAN which had a "quorum" drive, because OFC Windows ripped off so much code from DEC via Dave Cutler et al [supposedly they/@Micro$oft didn't even remove DEC copyright notices in many instances from what I have heard/read elsewhere?] that they even mimicked the OpenVMS cluster notion of a "quorum" terminology). That EMC SAN was a piece of crap too, throwing errors at having two many open files (apparently it was running Windows NT internally which had something like a 256 open files limit or whatever at the time? I don't remember the details anymore, but there were seriously only two machines ever touching it, I couldn't believe how fucking poorly designed it was, despite costing such an insane amount of money! At the time there were only a handful of VARs that were even allowed to sell Windows "cluster" solutions so we were basically stuck with that Dell/EMC abomination anyway).

As I was mouthing off/ranting to the old lead dev (who once cringed at my copy of K&R on my desk saying he remembered how difficult that class was in college? As if I needed more reasons to lose respect for a VB.Net dev who outsourced most of his teams' programming to Chinese lowest bid sorts of programmers while his team in Watsonville was mostly seen playing Halo on the XBOX Micro$oft gave them for being a "Micro$oft Certified Solutions Provider") I nearly screamed that employer was the only place I had ever been which wasted money and resources on M$-SQL! I could only think of one other employer in my decades of IT which even bothered to use MSDE, and that was more because that place had a hair brained idea to implement an internal issue tracking system in MS-Access, which used JET (which is an even bigger pile of it.sh) but I guess in theory could also use MSDE (which is sort of a stripped down M$-SQL). BES [Blackberry Enterprise Server] also used that steaming pile of crap MSDE codebase, even shipping/bundling vulnerable versions of MSDE over a year after Slammer hit.

It's true though, I've worked many other places that had databases. Some of which were very srs business. But they were typically running things such as: Sybase (yikes!), MySQL, PostgreSQL, hell even SQLite and BerkeleyDB. But M$-SQL? I only ever worked one place dumb enough to waste money and resources on that.

Such a weird dream. It's as if the bad employers I have had, even decades ago, I can't seem to get beyond in my subconscious or something?

I suppose the same is true of dreams where I think of my ex-wife or others who caused me heart break and emotional trauma; but those I can almost understand more. I hate thinking about bad past jobs. Paychecks never gave me the sorts of joys I found in romance even if my marriage failed.

As I think about it more, I have enjoyed watching @h0ffman@mas.to live stream coding; but he's often focusing on the Amiga, and that's just fun stuff!

It's difficult for me to qualify what deadmau5 does on stream as coding, he's more often than not, doing something drag n drop in TouchDesigner while smoking and seemingly interacting somewhat angrily with his audience (I think Joel is mostly just surly? Not really angry but I dunno! I can't begin to imagine having to contend with that large of a fanbase thankfully.).

But GUI real-time tools feel as if they are a far cry from what I tend to consider coding personally. I had a lot of fun taking a class in @notchvfx@graphics.social but it's such a powerful tool, so far removed from compiler toolchains and such that I tend to deal with on a CLI, that it doesn't really feel like what I consider coding; more fun experimentation.

Maybe in the future, there will be more things like that? I think having a real-time paradigm is awesome in general. dynamicland.org for example, takes real-time spatial interaction to the next level without the need for mocap suits and such; but that is really more of a proof of concept playground with funding and some incredible luminaries behind it than something that folks are accustomed to utilizing in any day to day way still.

Regardless, all of those things fuel the imagination and tend to push art forms more than just technical number crunching kinds of doldrums that a lot of more mundane coding can entail in my experience.

The other day I was talking to Paraguayan nationalists, asking for their take on the War of the Triple Alliance, and was surprised to find out they have the same version of the story about the British financing the war.

Apparently, there has only ever been one take, and that includes the British seeing the threat of the emerging Paraguay as a South American equivalent of Germany that needed to be stopped. After the killing of 90% of its White men, the modern Paraguay is all that's left.

Milei's libertarians woke up and chose war.

I searched to see if there are bad economic news they are distracting from, but all I found was that Milei fired the public officer of the ARCA (new version of IRS), a jewess who wanted to create a tax on Internet content creators; and replaced her with a man of Galician ancestry whose first measure as ARCA chief was to decree a reduction of his own salary by 80%. :pepe_feelsweird:

Shell Accounts

Shell Accounts
A shell is a command line interface for an operating system. With most shell providers, a command line interface on one flavor of Linux or Unix is all you get. Eskimo North provides access to eight different popular Linux distributions and SunOS Unix. Eskimo North also full remote desktop capabilities using X2Go with sound, and also NX, VNC, and RPD without sound.

Account Types
We offer four different levels of shell accounts: Economy, Standard, Power, and Enterprise. Background tasks such as IRC bots, Game Servers, and the like are permitted on all account types except student. IRC servers are not permitted because of their tendency to draw denial of service attacks. Standard, Power, Enterprise, and Super-Max shells include a MySQL database allowing you to run a variety of LAMP stack based applications on your website and to use non-web based applications that require a database.

Web Hosting
Web hosting under our domain is provided with all shell accounts. You can host your own domains with virtual domains or web hosting packages.

Remote Desktop
Remote desktop capability is like having a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers plugged right into our servers. Because our servers can be accessed anywhere in the world, this allows you to have a work environment you can access from anywhere in the world without risking losing your files to a laptop, tablet, or phone thief. We offer remote desktop capabilities on all of our shell servers except for the SunOS server. We support x2go, nx, vnc, and rdp protocols. X2go is the best choice as it provides extremely efficient compression and X round trip removal as well as sound.

Applications
Applications include Office Suites such as Libre Office and Caligra (which can read and write Microsoft Office file formats), Web and Program Development tools such as Bluefish Editor as well as many other editors, compilers, interpreters, scripting languages, debuggers, profilers, and online documentation.

E-mail
Our e-mail system offers unprecedented flexibility. You can access your mail via shell mail readers including graphical mailers like Thunderbird, or via Web mail, or via pop-3 and imap mail protocols, complete with TLS encryption. Our mail system includes Bayesian filtering with Spam Assassin which can be individually configured for your needs. Procmail allows you to sort and process mail automatically. Smartlist allows you to maintain mailing lists.

Security
Access to all of our servers is available via strong encryption. The shell servers all support ssh access. All of the remote desktop protocols tunnel via ssh. We maintain all of our servers up to date keep with the latest patches. Backups are made weekly.

Eskimo North has been providing Unix timeshare services since 1985. We have been providing Linux timeshare, shell access, web hosting, e-mail, and Internet services since 1992. Please take a look at our services as they support our free Federated services including Friendica, Hubzilla, Mastodon, Misskey, Yacy, and Nextcloud.

Federated Services

Federated Services are services which many instances form a network to provide a greater whole than the sum of their parts, each participant in the Fediverse is an “instance”. A message or other item made available on one instance is visible and available on other instances.

We make these services available to all people who do not abuse it in order to promote the values of Free Speech, and those of the United States Constitution First Amendment. A free republic is not possible without free speech and commercial mainstream media do not provide it. We also get some advertisement benefit from hosting these, it is our hope that people who see how fast and responsible our services are will decide to do hosting or use other paid services here.

There are numerous federated services available, we offer Macrobloging platform Friendica, Hubzilla; Microbloging services Mastodon, Misskey, a federated search engine, Yacy, and a federated cloud service, Nextcloud.

Macrobloging services are message systems that allow long form posts similar in format to Facebook. These allow for works of fiction, poetry, technical papers, news items, short stories, and more. These formats are most useful for discussion of social issues.

Microbloging services allow only short form posts similar in format to Twitter. While you can link to larger articles elsewhere, you have a relatively short character limit and so can not post them directly.

Censorship, is handled much different on the fediverse than on mainstream media like Twitter or Facebook. On the fediverse, each individual instance is responsible for content available on that instance, but does not censor the rest of the network. Thus if you find the rules of one instance too constraining you can move to another.

Federated search engines are analogous to federated message systems in that each instance chooses what portion of the internet it wants to crawl. When you enter a search term, the local instance queries all of the federated instances, collates and sorts the results and presents them to you. As with messages, each instance can have it’s own censorship policies but no one instance can censor the entire network.

Given the wild-west nature of the fediverse, it is probably not suitable for children under 14, and you’re guaranteed to find some material that will offend virtually everyone. With federated search engines, material that is inappropriate will usually be flagged sensitive or nsfw (not safe for work) so as long as you don’t expand material marked as such, you can avoid this soft of material. There are occasionally people who violate these rules, we do our best to remove such individuals none the less some will get through.

We offer the following federated services:

Friendica.Eskimo.Com
Friendica is a decentralized long format macrobloging message network. It is similar in format to facebook however there is no centralized censorship. Also, it is able to federate with all other federated message systems which use ActivityPub protocol and also we have extensions that allow it to speak to several other networks via other protocols.

Hubzilla.Eskimo.Com
Hubzilla is similar in message format to Friendica in that it allows long posts. However, it specializes in it’s ability to provide connectivity to multiple protocols and so we include it in our mix of federated services primarily for the better connectivity it offers. Hubzilla provides a great deal of interoperability between many networks though ActivityPub is still it’s primary protocol. Hubzilla gives you a greater degree of control over privacy than some of the other networks. You can create private channels that are served between hubzilla instances and other compatible instances.

Mastodon.Eskimo.Com
Mastodon is first and foremost an alternative to Twitter. While Twitter has Tweets, Mastodon has Toots. The format is very similar. Mastodon toots have a limit of 500 characters. Similar to the short limit of Twitter. This is why this platform is referred to as a Microbloging format. Mastodon interacts with other ActivityPub instances however when a long form blog post from another instance arrives, you are only shown a short portion with a link to follow to see the full post on the originating site.

Misskey.Eskimo.Com
Misskey is, like Mastodon, a microbloging service. However, it’s Japanese design and gives it a much more gamey aesthetic. The software is also extremely efficient allowing for a very fast message rate. If you’ve got a fast mind and can read and comprehend fast, you will appreciate this service.

Yacy.Eskimo.Com
Yacy is a federated search engine. There are several thousand instances on the Internet. Each instances crawls whatever portion of the web the administrator requested. It is also possible for the administrator of a site with relatively few resources to request a larger site to do crawls on their behalf. Unfortunately, it does not provide a method for an end user to initiate a crawl, but if you send e-mail to support@eskimo.com and request a crawl, we will initiate a crawl on your behalf.

NextCloud.Eskimo.Com
If you are a customer of Eskimo North, your login credentials will work without a domain extension to access Nextcloud. If you are not a customer you can apply for a Nextcloud account using your choice of login and password, in this case the login should include your originating network. Some features require an Eskimo North shell account to take full advantage of.

If you enjoy these services, please consider supporting us by taking advantage of our paid services: https://www.eskimo.com/

@meowski @sun @iwillbite Charity dies the moment you force people into being "charitable" at gunpoint. See China and people just driving away from accidents because if you stop to help, you're financially responsible.

Don't put a gun to people's heads and some will do things just because they want to help.

Also, if you really care about an issue, get trained in that field and personally improve it, don't expect others to do it for you.

It's that time of year to go through old HW and see what's still viable.

Threshold: It can boot #netbsd10

First up is a Unifi USG-3P, Cavium CN5020 board. Uniprocessor NetBSD10 (big-endian) runs well.

Also #openbsd 7.6 octeon image looks compelling as an extra switch for my home lab.

I'll make time to load NetBSD-current, and contribute how I can to multiprocessor.

Once again, the BSDs bring new life (and familiar quality) to otherwise unused HW.

Cheers to the BSDs!

The Future of Web Design: What You Need to Know Today

As a seasoned web designer who has witnessed the evolution of the internet from simple GeoCities pages to today's complex platforms, I can confidently say that the web design landscape is always evolving. Whether you're part of a web design agency or working independently, staying ahead of the curve is not just beneficial—it's essential for your success.

Recently, I had the opportunity to redesign a website that was only two years old. What was once considered state-of-the-art now looked obsolete. This is a common challenge for web designers: what works today may not work tomorrow.

The Rise of AI-Powered Design

One of the most significant changes I've noticed (and implemented in my own web design agency) is the use of AI tools. These tools are not replacing designers; instead, they are becoming indispensable assistants, helping with tasks ranging from initial layout ideas to optimizing user experiences.

The next big thing is adaptive AI-driven interfaces that adjust based on user behavior. As a web designer, this is both thrilling and challenging, pushing us to move beyond static layouts and create more dynamic, personalized experiences.

Sustainability in Web Design

Did you know that websites have a carbon footprint? More web design agencies are now focusing on sustainable design practices, creating sites that are not only visually appealing but also environmentally friendly. This involves optimizing images, reducing server requests, and selecting eco-friendly hosting providers.

The Human Touch in an Automated World

Despite the rise of automation, the human element in web design remains vital. A client recently told me, "I could have used a website builder, but I wanted someone who understands my business." This is where professional web designers excel—we bring a unique blend of technical skills and human insight that AI cannot replicate.

Immersive Experiences and Virtual Reality

The boundary between physical and digital experiences is becoming increasingly blurred. As a web designer, I'm seeing a growing demand for immersive experiences. Virtual showrooms, 3D product demonstrations, and VR-compatible websites are becoming more common. Understanding these technologies is essential for any web design agency aiming to stay relevant.

Mobile-First Is Just the Beginning

While mobile-first design has been the norm for years, we're now entering an era of unprecedented device diversity. From smartwatches to folding phones, the challenge for web designers is to create interfaces that work seamlessly across all these devices.

Accessibility Is Non-Negotiable

trend that's thankfully here to stay is the focus on accessibility. Every reputable web designer now prioritizes inclusive design. This isn't just about compliance—it's about creating websites that serve all users, regardless of their abilities.

Looking Ahead: What You Need to Know

If you're a web designer or part of a web design agency, here are the key areas to focus on:
- Learn how AI tools can enhance your workflow
- Stay updated on accessibility standards and best practices
- Understand the principles of sustainable web design
- Keep an eye on emerging technologies like VR and AR
- Focus on creating personalized user experiences
- Master cross-device compatibility
- Develop your problem-solving skills—they never go out of style

The Future Is Bright (and Dynamic)

The future of web design is more exciting than ever. While tools and technologies will continue to evolve, the core goal remains the same: creating meaningful, effective digital experiences. Whether you're a solo web designer or part of a larger web design agency, staying curious and adaptable is key.

Remember, the best designs are about solving real problems for real people. As we move forward, the most successful designers will be those who can balance innovation with practicality, technology with humanity.

Keep learning, stay curious, and don't be afraid to push boundaries. The future of web design is whatever we dare to imagine and create.
