Federated search engines are analogous to federated message systems in that each instance chooses what portion of the internet it wants to crawl. When you enter a search term, the local instance queries all of the federated instances, collates and sorts the results and presents them to you. As with messages, each instance can have itโs own censorship policies but no one instance can censor the entire network.
Given the wild-west nature of the fediverse, it is probably not suitable for children under 14, and youโre guaranteed to find some material that will offend virtually everyone. With federated search engines, material that is inappropriate will usually be flagged sensitive or nsfw (not safe for work) so as long as you donโt expand material marked as such, you can avoid this soft of material. There are occasionally people who violate these rules, we do our best to remove such individuals none the less some will get through.

Friendica.Eskimo.Com Friendica is a decentralized long format macrobloging message network. It is similar in format to facebook however there is no centralized censorship. Also, it is able to federate with all other federated message systems which use ActivityPub protocol and also we have extensions that allow it to speak to several other networks via other protocols.
Hubzilla.Eskimo.Com Hubzilla is similar in message format to Friendica in that it allows long posts. However, it specializes in itโs ability to provide connectivity to multiple protocols and so we include it in our mix of federated services primarily for the better connectivity it offers. Hubzilla provides a great deal of interoperability between many networks though ActivityPub is still itโs primary protocol. Hubzilla gives you a greater degree of control over privacy than some of the other networks. You can create private channels that are served between hubzilla instances and other compatible instances.
Mastodon.Eskimo.Com Mastodon is first and foremost an alternative to Twitter. While Twitter has Tweets, Mastodon has Toots. The format is very similar. Mastodon toots have a limit of 500 characters. Similar to the short limit of Twitter. This is why this platform is referred to as a Microbloging format. Mastodon interacts with other ActivityPub instances however when a long form blog post from another instance arrives, you are only shown a short portion with a link to follow to see the full post on the originating site.
Misskey.Eskimo.Com Misskey is, like Mastodon, a microbloging service. However, itโs Japanese design and gives it a much more gamey aesthetic. The software is also extremely efficient allowing for a very fast message rate. If youโve got a fast mind and can read and comprehend fast, you will appreciate this service.
Yacy.Eskimo.Com Yacy is a federated search engine. There are several thousand instances on the Internet. Each instances crawls whatever portion of the web the administrator requested. It is also possible for the administrator of a site with relatively few resources to request a larger site to do crawls on their behalf. Unfortunately, it does not provide a method for an end user to initiate a crawl, but if you send e-mail to support@eskimo.com and request a crawl, we will initiate a crawl on your behalf.
NextCloud.Eskimo.Com If you are a customer of Eskimo North, your login credentials will work without a domain extension to access Nextcloud. If you are not a customer you can apply for a Nextcloud account using your choice of login and password, in this case the login should include your originating network. Some features require an Eskimo North shell account to take full advantage of.

Like many of you, I woke up this morning to discover that our instance, along with lemmy.world, had been unexpectedly added to the beehaw block list. Although this development initially caught me off guard, the administrators at beehaw made an announcement shedding light on their decision.
The primary concern raised was our instance's policy of open registration. Given my belief that the fediverse is still navigating its early stages, I believe that for it to mature, gain traction, and encourage adoption, it is crucial for instances to offer an uncomplicated and direct route for newcomers to join and participate. This was one of the reason I decided to launch this instance. However, I do acknowledge that this inclusive approach brings its unique challenges, including the potential for toxicity and trolls. Despite these hurdles, I maintain the conviction that our collective strength as a community can overcome these issues.
After this happened, the beehaw admins and I had a good chat about their decision. While our stances on registration policies might diverge, we realized that our ultimate goals are aligned: we both strive to foster communities that thrive in an atmosphere of safety and respect, where users can passionately engage in discussions and feel a sense of belonging.
Although the probability of an immediate reversal are slim given the current circumstances, I believe we have managed to identify common ground. It's evident that, even in separation, we can unite to contribute positively to the broader fediverse community.
In the coming weeks or months, we plan to collaborate with other lemmy instance administrators to suggest enhancements and modifications to the lemmy project. Primarily, our proposals will concentrate on devising tools and features that empower us, as instance administrators, to moderate our platforms effectively.
In the meantime, while I understand may not be ideal for everyone, users who choose to participate on the beehaw instance will be required to register a separate account on their instance.

Also one of the things I did yesterday was that in addition to migrating my desktop from Windows 11 to #Linux Mint, I also migrated my Frame.work #laptop from #Pop_OS to Linux Mint as well.
I love Pop!_OS, and it's one of the most polished Linux #distros out there. (Still not convinced about #Cosmic, but I get why they're doing that.)
But one of the things I absolutely HATE about Pop!_OS is how much wasted screen-real estate they create. So much dead space!
#Laptop screens are small enough as it is and we need all the screen space available to us. I really got sick and tired of not really being able to have two windows opened side-by-side due to all the wasted space.
So, no more Pop!_OS and the Linux Mint migration of that went even smoother than I anticipated.
Mint is awesome and it was my distro of choice before Pop!_OS came on the scene, I just wish they supported KDE out of the box like they used to. Glad to be back, that's for sure. Something needs to be done for those of us with Nvidia GPUs because installing Mint with Nvidia was not straight-forward unfortunately and I think if someone was new to Linux or didn't know what they were doing they would have been immediately turned off to the whole mess.

Another attendee echoed the communityโs despair, stating, "I've never seen the lack of public officials coming out and actually trying to help."
While federal agencies and mainstream narratives suggest recovery is underway, the reality on the ground tells a starkly different story. So far I've been very impressed with the #Windows11 -> #LinuxMint migration. Haven't really delved too much into getting some of my legacy apps to work other than just trying to get things reinstalled and things set back up properly.
My biggest challenge now is jockeying data around on all my direct-attached storage drives so I can re-partition them and re-format them. They were all encrypted with #BitLocker under #Windows. So now the decision I need to make is... A) Set up #Cryptomator volumes? Benefit is it's cross-platform and the data is readable across Windows, Mac, and Linux and the encrypted data can be stored on any medium. B) Set up #LUKS volumes. Benefit is it's built-in to Linux requiring no additional software. But not supported outside of Linux. C) Set up #VeraCrypt volumes/ whole disk? Benefit is it's been battle-tested. And supports #FDE like BitLocker.
I'm kinda leaning towards Cryptomator if for no other reason than the data can be stored on any media. But, I like the fact I can set up FDE with VeraCrypt which certainly helps with CIA triad (confidentiality, integrity, availability). FDE I think increases availability since it's pretty much impossible to fuck with one of the encrypted files.
On the other hand, I already use Cryptomator to create personal secure volumes on public cloud storage providers....
