repeated conversations with my faithful freemason acquaintance continue to generate laughs on my part. the ignorance is amazing. for a cult that extolls science and technology, its membership is ignorant of the topics. just like organized religion.
i tell him to read the ipcc report. i get the reply justifying ones ignorance, "i'll only worry about things i can control."
he says that in the worst case scenario, he can go to israel. i ask him what he will do when the jordan dries out.

Would you look at this gorgeous lamp my partner made!🥰 This will go into our reading nook with the yellow arm chair.

The wood is visakoivu, a wood material from mutated silver birch (Betula pendula var. carelica). It's sometimes called "curly birch" in English. The wood has highly twisted grain which results in this very hard and decorative wood material.

The lamp shade is cut from plywood, also birch.

So this is the birchwood lamp. I love it.

Shell Accounts

Shell Accounts
A shell is a command line interface for an operating system. With most shell providers, a command line interface on one flavor of Linux or Unix is all you get. Eskimo North provides access to eight different popular Linux distributions and SunOS Unix. Eskimo North also full remote desktop capabilities using X2Go with sound, and also NX, VNC, and RPD without sound.

Account Types
We offer four different levels of shell accounts: Economy, Standard, Power, and Enterprise. Background tasks such as IRC bots, Game Servers, and the like are permitted on all account types except student. IRC servers are not permitted because of their tendency to draw denial of service attacks. Standard, Power, Enterprise, and Super-Max shells include a MySQL database allowing you to run a variety of LAMP stack based applications on your website and to use non-web based applications that require a database.

Web Hosting
Web hosting under our domain is provided with all shell accounts. You can host your own domains with virtual domains or web hosting packages.

Remote Desktop
Remote desktop capability is like having a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers plugged right into our servers. Because our servers can be accessed anywhere in the world, this allows you to have a work environment you can access from anywhere in the world without risking losing your files to a laptop, tablet, or phone thief. We offer remote desktop capabilities on all of our shell servers except for the SunOS server. We support x2go, nx, vnc, and rdp protocols. X2go is the best choice as it provides extremely efficient compression and X round trip removal as well as sound.

Applications
Applications include Office Suites such as Libre Office and Caligra (which can read and write Microsoft Office file formats), Web and Program Development tools such as Bluefish Editor as well as many other editors, compilers, interpreters, scripting languages, debuggers, profilers, and online documentation.

E-mail
Our e-mail system offers unprecedented flexibility. You can access your mail via shell mail readers including graphical mailers like Thunderbird, or via Web mail, or via pop-3 and imap mail protocols, complete with TLS encryption. Our mail system includes Bayesian filtering with Spam Assassin which can be individually configured for your needs. Procmail allows you to sort and process mail automatically. Smartlist allows you to maintain mailing lists.

Security
Access to all of our servers is available via strong encryption. The shell servers all support ssh access. All of the remote desktop protocols tunnel via ssh. We maintain all of our servers up to date keep with the latest patches. Backups are made weekly.

Eskimo North has been providing Unix timeshare services since 1985. We have been providing Linux timeshare, shell access, web hosting, e-mail, and Internet services since 1992. Federated Services

Federated Services are services which many instances form a network to provide a greater whole than the sum of their parts, each participant in the Fediverse is an “instance”. A message or other item made available on one instance is visible and available on other instances.

We make these services available to all people who do not abuse it in order to promote the values of Free Speech, and those of the United States Constitution First Amendment. A free republic is not possible without free speech and commercial mainstream media do not provide it. We also get some advertisement benefit from hosting these, it is our hope that people who see how fast and responsible our services are will decide to do hosting or use other paid services here.

There are numerous federated services available, we offer Macrobloging platform Friendica, Hubzilla; Microbloging services Mastodon, Misskey, a federated search engine, Yacy, and a federated cloud service, Nextcloud.

Macrobloging services are message systems that allow long form posts similar in format to Facebook. These allow for works of fiction, poetry, technical papers, news items, short stories, and more. These formats are most useful for discussion of social issues.

Microbloging services allow only short form posts similar in format to Twitter. While you can link to larger articles elsewhere, you have a relatively short character limit and so can not post them directly.

Censorship, is handled much different on the fediverse than on mainstream media like Twitter or Facebook. On the fediverse, each individual instance is responsible for content available on that instance, but does not censor the rest of the network. Thus if you find the rules of one instance too constraining you can move to another.

Federated search engines are analogous to federated message systems in that each instance chooses what portion of the internet it wants to crawl. When you enter a search term, the local instance queries all of the federated instances, collates and sorts the results and presents them to you. As with messages, each instance can have it’s own censorship policies but no one instance can censor the entire network.

Given the wild-west nature of the fediverse, it is probably not suitable for children under 14, and you’re guaranteed to find some material that will offend virtually everyone. With federated search engines, material that is inappropriate will usually be flagged sensitive or nsfw (not safe for work) so as long as you don’t expand material marked as such, you can avoid this soft of material. There are occasionally people who violate these rules, we do our best to remove such individuals none the less some will get through.

We offer the following federated services:

Friendica.Eskimo.Com
Friendica is a decentralized long format macrobloging message network. It is similar in format to facebook however there is no centralized censorship. Also, it is able to federate with all other federated message systems which use ActivityPub protocol and also we have extensions that allow it to speak to several other networks via other protocols.

Hubzilla.Eskimo.Com
Hubzilla is similar in message format to Friendica in that it allows long posts. However, it specializes in it’s ability to provide connectivity to multiple protocols and so we include it in our mix of federated services primarily for the better connectivity it offers. Hubzilla provides a great deal of interoperability between many networks though ActivityPub is still it’s primary protocol. Hubzilla gives you a greater degree of control over privacy than some of the other networks. You can create private channels that are served between hubzilla instances and other compatible instances.

Mastodon.Eskimo.Com
Mastodon is first and foremost an alternative to Twitter. While Twitter has Tweets, Mastodon has Toots. The format is very similar. Mastodon toots have a limit of 500 characters. Similar to the short limit of Twitter. This is why this platform is referred to as a Microbloging format. Mastodon interacts with other ActivityPub instances however when a long form blog post from another instance arrives, you are only shown a short portion with a link to follow to see the full post on the originating site.

Misskey.Eskimo.Com
Misskey is, like Mastodon, a microbloging service. However, it’s Japanese design and gives it a much more gamey aesthetic. The software is also extremely efficient allowing for a very fast message rate. If you’ve got a fast mind and can read and comprehend fast, you will appreciate this service.

Yacy.Eskimo.Com
Yacy is a federated search engine. There are several thousand instances on the Internet. Each instances crawls whatever portion of the web the administrator requested. It is also possible for the administrator of a site with relatively few resources to request a larger site to do crawls on their behalf. Unfortunately, it does not provide a method for an end user to initiate a crawl, but if you send e-mail to support@eskimo.com and request a crawl, we will initiate a crawl on your behalf.

NextCloud.Eskimo.Com
If you are a customer of Eskimo North, your login credentials will work without a domain extension to access Nextcloud. If you are not a customer you can apply for a Nextcloud account using your choice of login and password, in this case the login should include your originating network. Some features require an Eskimo North shell account to take full advantage of.

If you enjoy these services, please consider supporting us by taking advantage of our paid services: https://www.eskimo.com/

I don’t quite get the critic about the 'MacBook'-like trackpad (which every PC maker has these days, apart from Lenovo). When you are using physical trackpad keys, you have to first navigate your cursor to the right position and then reposition your finger to the physical key. Instead, you can just tap right there with 1-3 fingers (tap, don’t press!). Better touchpads like those by Apple also don’t have a 'click zone' but allow you to physically press everywhere.

This is why mainstream media is really trying to suppress stories on Luigi Mangione and assassinate his character. They are controlled by the same business entity. And this is bad for business.

Folks it is about an hour until #MONSTERDON, the weekly monster movie watch party. We've got a very enthusiastic group and a really bad movie this week, so you may want to set up a filter if you don't want to see this.

Think I finally figured out the key to the gnome drone aka the squinty story

He lets out a long string of obvious facts - usually nine or ten of them one after the other. His audience listens carefully looking for nuance and perhaps something new. Nothing new ever shows up.

So you put in considerable brain effort and are getting nothing out of it. Do this nine or ten times and your brain starts to switch off. It's a wasted effort so what's the point.

Then he drops in an obvious falsehood which everybody then mentally skims over and accepts it as true. Repeat ad nauseam

Tonight, something different on #monsterdon

In place of our usual fictional fare, we're watching the 1977 documentary The Giant Spider Invasion. It's about that event, which we've all heard of, in which a black hole opened in rural Wisconsin and let through spiders from the spider dimension. Giant spiders.

Many of us are too young to have lived through the Giant Spider Invasion - I myself was born in 1979, as part of the post-Giant Spider Invasion Baby Boom, so I didn't witness it first hand. My schools were always very hesitant to teach about The Giant Spider Invasion, so it is very much shrouded in mystery for me. My elders were too traumatized and spoke of it only in hushed tones after the children had all gone to bed.

So, I am in for a journey of discovery tonight.

Tuesday humor - enjoy!!

The Hidden Environmental #Cost of #SocialMedia

source: greenly.earth/en-gb/leaf-media…

#TikTok’s primary environmental challenge comes from its video-heavy platform, which consumes significantly more energy than text or image-based platforms. The sheer volume of videos, many of which are hosted on energy-intensive servers, makes TikTok one of the most environmentally costly social media platforms on a per-user basis. For example, streaming short videos on TikTok contributes to higher #emissions per minute of use compared to platforms like Twitter or Facebook, which rely more on text and images.

I get it, you want to create a mood for a TikTok ban for “environmental reasons”. Have you ever thought about how many emissions are caused by the consumption of porn videos? Let's just ban everything that's fun. After all, the big oil companies want to continue polluting the environment and society should focus on banning TikTok.

#environment #internet #online #traffic #co2 #future #climate #fun #censorship #politics #economy #pollution #earth #fail #news #society #carbonfootprint #propaganda #manipulation

in reply to anonymiss

The environmental impact of supposedly renewable energies is considerably greater than that of conventional energies. Before wind power etc., hydropower was considered to be the most environmentally impactful form of energy generation. Of course from an ecological point of view, for most people this doesn't matter, only CO2, because that's the only way to make money.

Have you ever thought about how many emissions are caused by the consumption of porn videos?

That's a good point. But perhaps we shouldn't ban and prohibit everything, but try to reduce needs and cravings.
If anything, I would ban all advertising.

Zionism is racism and the genocide and human rights abuses it rationalizes are fueling anti semitism not making us safer. As a Jewish person I join others around the world saying NOT IN MY NAME.

E.g., it pretends to be about "working-class" "economic anxiety," when it's really about economic elites rigging the political system to facilitate the flow of wealth from the bottom sectors of society to those who are already grossly rich — and exacerbating social hostilities and hatreds based in race, gender, national origin, religious affiliation, etc., to enable this transfer of wealth.

This is what this election was about and what makes it so sad. The price of eggs, gas, mortgages or anything else were just covers and excuses for what people were really voting for -- continued white privilege.

Ever since Nixon, I have been waiting and hoping that the "next generation" would see this and begin to vote for tolerance and actual liberty. But it has never happened and I am afraid will not happen in my lifetime.

Why #Russia will never attack the #EU:

I know there is a lot of #military and patriotic #propaganda out there and the military industrial complex is on the rise because everyone wants to arm themselves because of the Russian #threat.

Let's pause for a moment and think about the reasons why #war is still being waged today:

1) The number one reason is still #religion. Religion serves to unite one's own #community, but is also always a demarcation against others. In Europe and Russia, religion only plays a subordinate role and the churches are struggling with insignificance.

2) The second important reason is natural #resources. Western Europe has long since used up its natural resources and is therefore plundering other countries, mainly in #Africa. Russia has enough natural resources of its own.

3) Population growth so that new living spaces are needed. In #Europe and #Russia, the #population is declining. As a result, many families only have one child and they don't want to lose it to the war.

4) Important geostrategic positions. Europe is losing importance. Russia's most important trading partners are in #Asia. Europe is strategically insignificant.

Europe is increasingly losing importance and therefore wants to feel important militarily. For Russia, an attack would bring no advantage and only high losses. Russia can infiltrate the weakened political system in Europe much more easily by manipulating elections and causing social unrest with propaganda. This hybrid warfare is much more successful than an open war.

Russia may be NATO's adversary but NATO is not Russia's adversary. Russia has always wanted peace and even asked to join NATO when it was a peace organisation rather than a war organisation. The US has been at war with Russia since Russia did not take orders from them after WWII. Russia has never cared that much about our wars. We have a war based economy and since WWII the US has invaded another country on average every other year whereas Russia did invade Afghanistan and Georgia... but out propaganda says "Russia bad" so those who cannot think for themselves see Russia as bad.

Emmanuel Florac reshared this.

There's a post going around right now that is a long, thorough analysis of the failures of technology in the last decade, and its is very good.

wheresyoured.at/never-forgive-…

It's full of zingers like "The average person’s experience with technology is one so aggressive and violative that I believe it leaves billions of people with a consistent low-grade trauma. We seem, as a society, capable of understanding that social media can hurt us, unsettle us, or make us feel crazed and angry, but I think it’s time to accept that the rest of the tech ecosystem undermines our wellbeing in an equally-insidious way. And most people don’t know it’s happening, because everybody has accepted deeply shitty conditions for the last ten years."

The author names it The Rot Economy, which I think is a good, appropriate, and accurate name.

He touches on Enshitification theory (via @pluralistic ) but spends less time talking about the mechanism by which things are getting worse, and more time talking about the subjective experience of living through enshitification, and also about the growth mindset that enables it.

The analysis is good! The subjective experience of using technology today is deeply painful. We've allowed the shitty smug nerd in our heads to convince us that it's acceptable becuase we know how to deal with it, but it's still a struggle, an assault. It's still Bad.

Growth for the sake of growth is rot.

Seeing it spelled out in very clear terms, in very specific terms, sends a powerful message.

The call to action section is the weakest part of the piece. It is not weak, but it is weaker than everything else.

I want to talk about that for a second, both what the author recommends and also what I recommend.

The author recommends putting a name to this rot, calling it out, explaining it to others, and identifying the people responsible. This is a great start! Google search didn't just get worse on its own, Prabhakar Raghavan instructed a team to destroy it. There is a person, a team of people, behind this decay.

I see the change for the sake of change / growth at any cost mindset in places where I really shouldn't, thought. Mastodon, for example. It seems like each new release has some new Growth Hack inspired assault. Eugen isn't doing it for exactly the same reasons, but the root is still a mindset that values Growth over every other metric.

in reply to Andrew (Television Executive)

We are in an abusive relationship with technology.

So, yes, give it a name. Explain it. Notice it. Be outraged by it.

But also, at every opportunity we have, we have to reject it. (I noted, as I read the original article that I was accosted and asked for my email address twice, the second time while reading a section about how invasive and useless that is)

There are places that the Rot has not yet reached. We must identify them, share them, and embrace them.

(Linux and BSD, the fediverse in general, peertube, physical media, jellyfin/kodi)

When The Rot comes to places that should have been safe, we have to destroy them. Starve them of the users that power them or actually burn them to the ground. If you don't sanitize the area, the Rot will spread.

That means Ubuntu. That means bluesky. That means, in many ways, mastodon as a software platform.

in reply to Andrew (Television Executive)

This kind of vigilance is exhausting, and thats the point. Canonical knows that abandoning Ubuntu for Debian will come with a cost, and they're angling that the cost of abandoning Ubuntu is higher than the annoyance youll experience from the advertisements they've shoved in to Apt, or the fact that they partner with Amazon out of the box.

Eugen knows that migrating an instance (or even a single user) off mastodon and on to something else is a big, fragile task. (Hometown exists, and is significantly less GrowthHacky than mastodon, but is a direct migration and mastodon derivative. OTOH, as a mastodon derivative, most of the dev effort has to go in to either improving or undoing what's been done to mainline mastodon.

Account migration exists and works, even to other platforms, but you lose post history (which is a bigger deal for some people than others.)

I'm not saying it's impossible, it's just Effort.)

in reply to Andrew (Television Executive)

But there's a beacon of real hope in what I said above, and I'm not sure if you caught it.

When we embrace the free software world, if The Rot does come, we can fight it.

When The Rot comes on Windows, or on Spotify, or on Facebook, we have to either accept that rot or abandon that platform.

When The Rot came for Ubuntu, I had a clear, direct, simple migration path to a platform that was not covered in Rot. The majority of my tools and skills transfer directly. I did not have to make any major changes to my workflow. I had a couple of minor annoyances, I dealt with them, I moved on.

I can (and have planned to for a while, though I haven't actually done it yet) move this fedicerse instance to Hometown without losing anything but a few hours of my day.

There will come a time when the same is true of other platforms and, until then, you can at least preserve your contacts and keep an archive of your posts.

When Plex started tightening the screws, I took my library and left.

Free software is not a silver bullet. It doesn't protect us from The Rot, but it does give us the tools to fight back.

in reply to Andrew (Television Executive)

I just woke up so don't have the brain power to respond to this fully other than to say it puts into words what I've been thinking and more.

Funny you should mention Ubuntu, I had made a decision to not use it for years but started using Ubuntu Studio about a month ago. I've been slowly remembering why I stopped using it, and am going to take the opportunity over the holidays to migrate back to something less... that. I saw it as an opportunity to stop distro hopping on the machines I use for work, but it's just been like using an alternate universe Windows.

in reply to Andrew (Television Executive)

- yeah, part of this is the oligopoly-vs-fire-exit situation.
- I wonder whether Chromebooks are better at that price point?
- I wonder if we have a lagging over-supply problem? Too much money "in the internet", even though adoption (within the US esp) has topped out, and software companies, like pharma, are spending more on sales/marketing than on product development....
in reply to Andrew (Television Executive)

I don't disagree - with either of you - but I do think that by posing free software as the solution we're saying that commerce can't possibly work in the digital world & that's not great. Commerce is really practical & has served humanity well in myriad ways; just as we must take the physical world back from capitalism to save it, so it must also be with the digital one.

We don't have to take trade out, but we do have to put human beings back in & insist on human-first systems.

in reply to Andrew (Television Executive)

💯 and I suspect a lot of people don't even realize they're capitalism/growth pilled. It's such a deeply ingrained part of building things in our society. That and needing to do things fast. Part of what "efficiency" gets rid of is room to breathe and reconsider, to be in the moment and know what it is, it's all about racing towards some idealized future, fuck the consequences and suffering being created in this moment.l (that will inevitably also contaminate that future, which will be discarded for another more grandiose idealized dream of a future). But the present is uncomfortable for people because it's where we feel things and come to know them and ourselves for what we are, for both better and worse.
in reply to Andrew (Television Executive)

even mundane things are affected. I fill up my car late at night at a 24 hour garage. It has "cloud connected" petrol pumps; which back up to the cloud around 02:00-03:00. Whole lot locks out (including the big pumps for lorries), resets during this process and no fuel can be dispensed.

If you arrive at this time, you end up waiting around (often in the cold and pissing rain) for this process to complete.

I didn't drive in the 90s, but I'm sure this didn't happen back then..

!! Mireille MOUTTE

Why do women wear flowers in their hair to work in the hell of a Tamil Nadu garment factory?
Why do unions know to check on a woman who stops wearing flowers?

You don't get to write this kind of piece (or even know it needs writing) without doing the long, hard work of grassroots union solidarity, so thank you Nandita and Nikita for such an insightful article.

@shibao reminds me of a time back when i used to take my car in to a mechanic, i was talking to one who was standing under a lift, and the lift suddenly dropped about 5 inches right over his head. almost got squished cause something was wrong with the hydraulics. he noted the look on my face at the time.

decent lifts have some kind of ratcheting mechanism or mechanical stops that engage in case the hydraulics fail, which does happen sometimes. you never want to get under a hydraulic lift without a backup mechanism because when seals fail, it loses pressure suddenly and drops the load

I've been watching Mend it Mark for a few years now. He's a superb technician, no fear of anything old or new. Highly recommended to watch, not just this vid either.

I am of the opinion that the manufacturer is suffering from a case of bruised ego. Not only did MiM fix the device when he was told he wouldn't be able to, he also revealed that the design was essentially pedestrian. On a piece that expensive, its a huge blow.

@Whiskeyomega I don't know much about high-end audio equipment, but I've built a fair number of kits and repaired my own stuff, and the components inside that pre-amp seemed like off-the-shelf stuff. The construction quality seemed about what I would expect from a consumer-grade kit from someone like Dayton Audio. Just my opinion. YMMV.
