最近、小さなスクリプトを書く際に試しにRBSを書いて、VS Codium（Visual Studio Codeからプロプライエタリーな部分を除いた物）にSteepプラグインを入れて、エディターの支援を受けながら進めるようにしてみている。それで気付いた組み込みクラスなどのRBSシグニチャーの不足があればプルリクエストも送っている。
しばらく書いてきていて思ったのだけど、型に不寛容なメソッドを書くようになってしまいそう。みんながこれに慣れると、文化が変わりそう（これは当たり前だが）。
まず型について、Rubyでは伝統的に「どのメソッドに反応するか」が型とされてきた。数値を扱う work_with_integer_like というメソッドがあったとして、引数の型は「 #to_iに反応するオブジェクト」といったように考えた。そして、メソッドの最初の方で実際に #to_i を呼んで Integer にしてから処理する。
RBSでもこれは表現できて、

def work_with_integer_like: (_ToI) -> void_ToI みたいによく使われる型は、RBS組み込みで定義されている（ interface はRubyの言語構造としては存在しなくて、RBSの物）。勿論、RBSでは「どのクラスのインスタンスか」という型の表現方法も使える。
def work_with_integer: (Integer) -> Integerinterface を定義する必要は無くて、クラスを書くだけ。こちらの方が書くのが簡単なので、RBSが広まると、実装に跳ね返って、こちらの方のメソッド定義が増えるのではないかと思っている。多分「『どのメソッドに反応するか』で型を語る」という（ダックタイピングの）文化と関わってはいるけど、それだけではないまた別の文化として、「引数の型に寛容」ということがあると思っている。ファイルを扱うメソッドがあって、引数でそのファイルを受け取る際に、ファイルパスを表す文字列やオブジェクトでも、開いたファイルオブジェクトでもどちらでも受け取るメソッドは多い。

def work_with_file: (path) -> Stringメソッドの引数を適切な形にするのは、呼び出し側の責務か、呼ばれた側の責務か、というのは昔からある議論だと思うけど、Rubyは呼ばれた側が適切に変換する責務を負うことが多い文化だと思う。けど、それが変わるのではないか。
そして、このことの結果として、ライブラリーなどのユーザー側が、事前に適切な型に（ここではFileからパスに変換）した上でメソッドに渡すという面倒を引き受け……るのではない。いや、そうなるだろうとは思うけど、ユーザー側はこれを面倒だとは思わないと思う。VS Codiumとかで書いていて、メソッドを呼ぶ出す時に引数の方を調べて、適切に変換して渡す、というのが当たり前になって無意識にやるだろう。「はっきり型を調べたわけじゃないけどそれっぽいオブジェクトを渡したら何か動いた」みたいなRubyちょい感動あるあるは無くなる。
そしてどんどん、メソッド定義の際には引数の型は一種類だけ選ぶようになる。 interface 定義の手間があることを考えると、ダックタイピングではなくクラスで型を表現することが増えていくだろうと思う。
RBS（や他の型表現）が広まるかどうかは全然分からない。けど広まった場合はこうなるんだろうなあ、そしておっさんとしては文化が変わることにちょっとした寂しさを覚えるのであった。

En se voyant attribuer des postes de choix dans les universités, les génocidaires de Gaza rejoignent une bande de bellicistes expérimentés.

Aujourd’hui, à l’occasion du 22e anniversaire de l’invasion de l’Irak par les États-Unis en 2003, les principaux cerveaux et commanditaires de ce monstrueux crime de guerre, de Condoleezza Rice à David Petraeus, sont confortablement installés dans des postes luxueux dans les plus grandes universités américaines.
Dans le même temps, les responsables du bombardement et du siège de Gaza par Israël, soutenus par les États-Unis, ce qui est considéré comme un génocide par des groupes de défense des droits humains tels qu’Amnesty International et Human Rights Watch, s’installent déjà dans des postes tout aussi prestigieux dans des établissements d’élite. Tout récemment, Brett McGurk et Jake Sullivan, fonctionnaires de l’administration Biden, ont accepté des postes à Harvard, la chaire occupée par Sullivan étant nommée en l’honneur de l’ancien secrétaire d’État et conseiller à la sécurité nationale Henry Kissinger. Sullivan et McGurk ont tous deux été des hauts responsables chargés de mettre en œuvre les politiques de Biden à Gaza, et le travail de McGurk remonte à l’occupation de l’Irak.
Nombre de ces universités – de Harvard à Yale, de Columbia à Stanford – ont fait des déclarations pour dénoncer des injustices telles que l’invasion illégale de l’Ukraine par la Russie, mais sont restées le plus souvent silencieuses concernant la destruction de Gaza par Israël et l’éducide à l’encontre des universités palestiniennes [Le scolasticide, souvent utilisé de manière interchangeable avec les termes éducide et épistémicide, fait référence à la destruction massive intentionnelle de l’éducation dans un lieu spécifique. La réponse des universités à la contestation relative à la guerre américano-israélienne contre la Palestine a été bien plus musclée que tout ce que l’on a pu voir pendant la guerre d’Irak.
« C’est l’exception palestinienne », a déclaré à Truthout Van Gosse, cofondateur de l’association Historians Against the War (Historiens contre la guerre), créée en 2003 en réaction à la guerre en Irak, et actuel coprésident de l’association Historians for Peace and Democracy (Historiens pour la paix et la démocratie).
Pourtant, Gosse et ceux qui ont mobilisé le monde universitaire pour s’opposer à la guerre en Irak, ne font que rejoindre une nouvelle génération d’étudiants militants qui s’opposent à la complicité des universités dans le génocide des Palestiniens.
Anniversaire d’un crime de guerre
Partout dans le monde, l’invasion de l’Irak par les États-Unis est largement considérée comme une abomination morale, rendue possible par une campagne de mensonges de l’administration de George W. Bush, qui a faussement prétendu que l’Irak détenait des armes de destruction massive pour justifier une invasion illégale.
Le Centre européen pour les droits constitutionnels et les droits humains a qualifié l’invasion de « crime » et a déclaré que les États-Unis « ont commis des crimes de guerre, notamment des massacres et des actes de torture à grande échelle. » Amnesty International a souligné les « violations flagrantes des droits humains et les graves violations du droit international humanitaire perpétrées par la coalition dirigée par les États-Unis » au cours de l’invasion et de l’occupation, qui ont officiellement pris fin en 2011.
Gosse, professeur émérite du Franklin and Marshall College qui a dispensé des cours sur le droit de la guerre, a déclaré à Truthout « Quiconque a un lien avec la guerre d’Irak est responsable du premier crime de guerre, qui est l’agression ».
« Si vous faites la guerre sans casus belli, c’est un crime de guerre », a-t-il ajouté.
Les principaux artisans et responsables de la deuxième guerre des États-Unis contre l’Irak ont été récompensés par des postes d’enseignement prestigieux et des conférences lucratives dans des universités américaines.
Le projet « Costs of War » (Coûts de la guerre) de l’université Brown estime que 315 000 Irakiens, en grande majorité des civils, sont morts pendant l’invasion et l’occupation, bien que ce chiffre soit probablement sous-estimé. Environ 9,2 millions d’Irakiens, soit 37 % de la population irakienne d’avant-guerre, pourraient avoir été déplacés. Tout cela s’est produit après des années de sanctions dévastatrices, dont certaines ont été mises en œuvre dès 1990, un an avant la première invasion de l’Irak par les États-Unis.
L’occupation américaine a encadré des tortures et des massacres d’Irakiens, a entraîné des violences sectaires massives et la destruction du système éducatif et celui de la santé publique du pays. La guerre et l’occupation ont bouleversé la région sur le plan politique, entraînant des centaines de milliers de morts supplémentaires et des millions de personnes déplacées.
Les artisans de la guerre en Irak affluent dans les universités
Condoleezza Rice, une va-t-en-guerre qui a été conseillère à la sécurité nationale lors de l’invasion de 2003, puis secrétaire d’État, entretient des relations chaleureuses avec des universités depuis qu’elle a quitté le gouvernement.
Aujourd’hui, elle est titulaire de la chaire Denning en Commerce mondial et Economie à la HSBC (Stanford Graduate School of Business) et est directrice de la Hoover Institution, le groupe de réflexion conservateur de Stanford. Elle a également été invitée à prendre la parole dans des universités telles que Pepperdine, Purdue et l’université du Minnesota, ce qui lui aurait permis de percevoir 150 000 dollars.
Peu de responsables du gouvernement ont été aussi déterminés à défendre et à encadrer l’invasion de l’Irak que Douglas Feith, l’ancien sous-secrétaire d’État à la défense chargé de la politique étrangère. En 2006, juste après avoir quitté l’administration Bush, Feith s’est vu confier, sans vote du corps enseignant, un poste de chargé de cours à la School of Foreign Service de Georgetown.
Cette décision « a déclenché un tollé parmi les enseignants », note le New York Times, « 72 professeurs, administrateurs et étudiants de troisième cycle ont signé une lettre de protestation, certains allant même jusqu’à l’accuser de crimes de guerre. »
David Petraeus, qui a commandé la 101e division aéroportée pendant l’invasion avant de devenir le commandant en chef en Irak et en Afghanistan, puis chef de la CIA, a également été chaleureusement accueilli dans le monde universitaire au cours de la dernière décennie.
En 2013, Petraeus a été nommé professeur invité à la City University de New York. Il était prévu qu’il reçoive la somme astronomique de 150 000 dollars pour donner un cours hebdomadaire de trois heures, mais Petraeus a renoncé à ce paiement après que cela soit devenu un scandale public, et que sa nomination ait fait l’objet de protestations.
Mais ce n’était que le début des invitations académiques de Petraeus. À peu près à la même époque, il a rejoint la faculté de l’université de Californie du Sud (USC) en tant que titulaire de la chaire Judge Widney, un titre « réservé à d’éminentes personnes issues des lettres, des sciences, des professions libérales, des milieux d’affaires, des dirigeants tant des collectivités qu’à l’échelon national » selon un communiqué de l’USC. Petraeus a occupé ce poste pendant six ans. L’USC est restée discrète sur son salaire.
Aujourd’hui, Petraeus continue de donner des conférences que ce soit à l’université Rice, ou à l’université de l’Arizona en passant par Princeton, et il est toujours titulaire d’une bourse Kissinger à la Jackson School of Global Affairs de l’université de Yale. Yale a également accueilli Stanley McChrystal, qui a supervisé les opérations spéciales en Irak et en Afghanistan. De 2010 à 2022, il a occupé un poste de chercheur de haut niveau dans cette université qui fait partie de l’Ivy League [La Ivy League est un groupe de huit universités privées du Nord-Est des États-Unis. Figurant parmi les universités les plus anciennes du pays, sept d’entre elles ayant été fondées par les Britanniques avant l’indépendance, elles ont pour point commun de figurer parmi les plus prestigieuses du pays, NdT].
Harvard accueille des complices de la guerre en Irak et à Gaza
Petraeus a également été un pilier de l’université de Harvard, où il a occupé pendant six ans le poste de Maître de conférence au Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs (Centre Belfer pour la science et les affaires internationales) de la Harvard Kennedy School.
Comme l’a fait remarquer le journaliste Michael Massing, le Centre Belfer est un « bras virtuel du complexe militaire et du renseignement », et compte un grand nombre de dirigeants et de boursiers liés au Pentagone et aux entreprises d’armement.
En 2023, Meghan L. O’Sullivan a pris la tête du Belfer Center. Selon un article paru en 2006 dans le New York Times, O’Sullivan était l’une des principales conseillères de Bush en ce qui concerne l’Irak et l’Afghanistan, ses collègues affirmant qu’elle avait « joué un rôle déterminant dans le positionnement de Bush » et qu’elle était « la plus haute fonctionnaire travaillant à plein temps sur ces pays à la Maison Blanche. » Elle a également passé plus d’un an à Bagdad en tant qu’assistante de Paul Bremer, qui dirigeait l’Autorité provisoire de la coalition, ce qui faisait de lui le dirigeant de facto de l’Irak pendant les premières années de l’occupation. Durant son mandat, Bremer a mis en œuvre, en solitaire, des réformes du marché libre et des programmes de privatisation qui ont été largement décriés.
En 2022, O’Sullivan, qui était déjà professeure à la Harvard Kennedy School, a dû faire face à des manifestations de militants anti-guerre en raison de son poste d’administratrice du géant de l’armement Raytheon – un poste lucratif qu’elle a occupé à partir de 2017 et dont elle ne s’est retirée que début 2023 après avoir été nommée directrice du Belfer Center.
Harvard vient également d’annoncer que l’ancien conseiller à la sécurité nationale de Biden, Jake Sullivan, qui a contribué à garantir le soutien des États-Unis au siège israélien de Gaza, sera le premier titulaire de la chaire Kissinger de pratique de l’État et de l’ordre mondial, affiliée au Belfer Center.
Henry Kissinger, décédé en 2023, est largement considéré comme un criminel de guerre pour avoir soutenu des atrocités en Asie du Sud-Est, en Amérique latine et au Timor oriental dans les années 1970. Kissinger a lui-même été le bienvenu dans le monde universitaire jusqu’à sa mort, même si il a souvent été confronté à des mouvements hostiles lorsqu’il prenait la parole sur les campus.
Gosse se souvient des contestations suscitées par les allocutions de Kissinger lors de la cérémonie de remise des diplômes dans les années 1980. « On n’a guère vu d’institutions reconnaître la criminalité des concepteurs de ces terribles guerres », a-t-il déclaré à Truthout.
En outre, Harvard a récemment annoncé que Brett McGurk rejoindrait le Belfer Center en tant que maître de conférence.
McGurk a été le coordinateur de Joe Biden pour le Moyen-Orient et l’Afrique du Nord et l’un des principaux conseillers de l’administration concernant la guerre d’Israël contre Gaza, il a été très impliqué dans les négociations entre Israël et le Hamas. Selon Akbar Shahid Ahmed, du HuffPost, le principal souci de McGurk était de parvenir à une « normalisation » des relations israélo-saoudiennes au détriment des droits humains des Palestiniens.
McGurk a également servi dans les administrations de George W. Bush, Obama et Trump, où il a fortement influencé la politique américaine en Irak. McGurk a été critiqué pour son soutien étroit à l’ancien Premier ministre irakien Nouri al-Maliki. Un diplomate a qualifié McGurk « d’expert accompli à Washington », mais n’a constaté « aucune trace de quelque intérêt pour les Irakiens ou pour l’Irak en tant qu’endroit peuplé de personnes réelles ».
Harrison Mann, diplômé de la Harvard Kennedy School, qui a démissionné en mai 2024 de la Defense Intelligence Agency pour contester la politique américaine à Gaza, a dénoncé l’embauche par Harvard de McGurk, qu’il a qualifié de « défenseur enthousiaste et influent du soutien militaire américain ayant appuyé la campagne brutale d’Israël à Gaza. »
« Recruter McGurk, c’est déclarer que pour Havard, être partie prenante d’une litanie de crimes de guerre n’est pas un obstacle », a écrit Mann.
Les liens entre les campus et le militarisme ne sont pas nouveaux
Les liens étroits entre les universités américaines et la machine de guerre ne sont pas nouveaux. Le complexe militaro-industriel s’est développé de manière interdépendante avec l’essor de l’enseignement supérieur après la Seconde Guerre mondiale et pendant la Guerre froide.
De Stanford au MIT, tout au long des années 1950 et 1960, l’argent de la défense et des entreprises a afflué dans les laboratoires de recherche. Les principaux artisans de la guerre américaine au Vietnam et dans le sud-est asiatique, comme McGeorge Bundy et Henry Kissinger, ont occupé des postes prestigieux à Harvard avant d’entrer dans les administrations Johnson et Nixon.
À la fin des années 1960, cependant, des soulèvements de grande ampleur sur les campus ont commencé à remettre ouvertement en question l’alliance étroite entre les universités et l’industrie de la guerre pendant la guerre des États-Unis au Vietnam et en Asie du Sud-Est. Des manifestations militantes contre des entreprises comme Dow Chemical – fabricant du napalm – ont éclaté sur des dizaines de campus. De Berkeley à Madison en passant par Columbia, des mouvements d’étudiants ont occupé des bâtiments et dressé la carte des liens entre leurs écoles et le pouvoir des entreprises et la machine de guerre.
Aujourd’hui, les manifestations sur les campus pour dénoncer l’assaut génocidaire d’Israël contre Gaza poursuivent cette tradition de remise en question des liens entre les universités et la machine de guerre.
Des dizaines d’universités et leurs laboratoires de recherche, de Johns Hopkins à Carnegie Mellon en passant par le MIT et l’université de Californie du Sud, reçoivent du Pentagone des milliards de dollars de financement. Des étudiants depuis Columbia jusqu’à Cornell ont protesté contre les liens étroits entre les fabricants d’armes qui alimentent la campagne de destruction d’Israël et les conseils d’administration de leurs propres universités qui accueillent des représentants de ces fabricants d’armes en tant qu’administrateurs et donateurs.
L’exception palestinienne
Au cours de la période qui a précédé l’invasion de l’Irak par les États-Unis, certains universitaires américains ont décidé de résister. Des dizaines de professeurs se sont réunis lors de la conférence de janvier 2003 de l’American Historical Association (AHA) pour former un nouveau groupe, Historians Against the War (HAW = Historiens contre la guerre).
Gosse, qui a cofondé HAW, a déclaré à Truthout que la mission du groupe était « de mobiliser les historiens et de les inciter à s’exprimer et à être actifs sur le campus et au sein du mouvement plus large » contre la guerre.
Les membres de HAW ont participé à des manifestations, organisé des conférences, des séminaires, et rédigé des articles d’opinion. Lors de la réunion d’AHA en 2007, ils ont réussi à faire passer une résolution appelant à la fin de la guerre en Irak.
Vers 2014, explique Gosse, HAW a commencé à se concentrer davantage sur la Palestine, en créant un groupe de travail Palestine-Israël. Ce virage a suscité « une certaine controverse » dit-il, et les efforts du groupe pour « censurer les multiples violations des libertés académiques par Israël » lors des réunions de l’AHA au cours des années suivantes ont été mis en échec.
Après la première élection de Trump, le groupe s’est rebaptisé « Historiens pour la paix et la démocratie » (HPAD) et s’est lancé dans la lutte contre les « guerres culturelles » de la droite. Ils organisent encore des panels lors des conférences de l’AHA et celles-ci remplissent les salles.
C’est HPAD qui a présenté, lors de la réunion de l’AHA de janvier 2025, la résolution s’opposant à l’éducide à Gaza, laquelle a été adoptée à une écrasante majorité de 428 voix contre 88, avant d’être rejetée par un veto de la direction d’AHA quelques jours plus tard. En réponse, HPAD et le Palestine Historians Group ont rédigé une lettre signée par plus de 1 900 historiens, dont quatre anciens présidents de l’AHA, que le conseil de direction d’AHA examinera lors d’une réunion le 20 mars. Cette lettre demande au conseil de direction de l’AHA d’annuler son veto à la résolution d’opposition à l’éducide à Gaza.
Pour Gosse, qui copréside HPAD qui est un centre de recherche, il existe un contraste frappant entre la guerre contre l’Irak et celle contre la Palestine. Selon lui, certaines universités ont encouragé le débat dans le cadre de la guerre en Irak. On avait le sentiment que celle-ci était « quelque chose de vraiment important dont nous devions discuter », explique Gosse, ce qui peut être attribué à une « prolongation du syndrome du Vietnam », une expression qui fait référence au scepticisme citoyen à l’égard des interventions militaires américaines dans les décennies qui ont suivi la guerre du Vietnam.
Mais aujourd’hui, nombre de ces mêmes universités évitent et répriment toute discussion quant à l’injustice dont les Palestiniens sont victimes.
« On se heurte à un mur si l’on conteste ce que fait Israël », déclare Gosse. « C’est un mauvais signal qui a fortement limité la possibilité pour les gens de parler de l’occupation complètement illégale des territoires palestiniens et du fait qu’Israël est, depuis très longtemps, un État qui pratique l’apartheid ».
Gosse déplore « l’horrible capitulation et la peur » qui règnent actuellement au sein des universités et « la destruction complète de la gouvernance des facultés. » Il a qualifié de « révoltantes » et de « tout à fait scandaleuses » les mesures prises par l’université de Columbia lors de l’arrestation de Mahmoud Khalil.
« Ils se discréditent » a-t-il déclaré. « Tous les progrès réalisés en matière de liberté académique et de liberté d’expression sur les campus ont été jetés aux orties en l’espace de quelques mois. »
Khalil, palestinien et résident permanent légal aux États-Unis, récemment diplômé de l’Université de Columbia et qui a participé à des manifestations sur le campus contre le génocide à Gaza a été arrêté le 8 mars par l’ICE et transféré en Louisiane, d’où l’administration Trump tente de l’expulser pour avoir participé à des manifestations pro-palestiniennes.
Un juge fédéral a temporairement suspendu l’ordre d’expulsion, et il y a eu une vague de soutien en faveur de Khalil et d’indignation face aux attaques éhontées de l’administration contre les droits à la liberté d’expression. Son arrestation fait suite à de nombreux mois de répression et de condamnations à l’encontre des étudiants contestataires lors de l’administration Biden, et que l’administration Trump a immédiatement intensifiées.
Alors que les fomenteurs américains de ces guerres catastrophiques, depuis l’Irak jusqu’à Gaza, continuent de se faire une place dans ces universités mêmes qui répriment toute contestation autour de la Palestine, les mentalités en dehors des sphères du pouvoir sont en train d’évoluer. Quel que soit le résultat final de la résolution de l’AHA sur l’éducide palestinien, Gosse considère que les initiatives prises pour la faire adopter ont été « un grand succès ».
« La société savante la plus vénérable des États-Unis a été forcée d’affronter pleinement et complètement l’éducide à Gaza » a-t-il déclaré.
