- longterm 6.12 as base (less hassle, more stable)
- intel only (no amd, nvidia, wifi card drivers etc)
- modern-ish hardware only (no obscure old keyboard drivers etc)
- O3 optimizations (I think they generally make sense on an i7-11th gen)

A shell is a command line interface for an operating system. With most shell providers, a command line interface on one flavor of Linux or Unix is all you get. Eskimo North provides access to eight different popular Linux distributions and SunOS Unix. Remote desktop capability is like having a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers plugged right into our servers. Because our servers can be accessed anywhere in the world, this allows you to have a work environment you can access from anywhere in the world without risking losing your files to a laptop, tablet, or phone thief. We offer remote desktop capabilities on all of our shell servers except for the SunOS server. We support x2go, nx, vnc, and rdp protocols. X2go is the best choice as it provides extremely efficient compression and X round trip removal as well as sound.

Applications include Office Suites such as Libre Office and Caligra (which can read and write Microsoft Office file formats), Web and Program Development tools such as Bluefish Editor as well as many other editors, compilers, interpreters, scripting languages, debuggers, profilers, and online documentation.

Our e-mail system offers unprecedented flexibility. You can access your mail via shell mail readers including graphical mailers like Thunderbird, or via Web mail, or via pop-3 and imap mail protocols, complete with TLS encryption. Our mail system includes Bayesian filtering with Spam Assassin which can be individually configured for your needs. Procmail allows you to sort and process mail automatically. Smartlist allows you to maintain mailing lists.
Security
Access to all of our servers is available via strong encryption. The shell servers all support ssh access. All of the remote desktop protocols tunnel via ssh. We maintain all of our servers up to date keep with the latest patches. Backups are made weekly.

By contrast, in twenty years of operations in Afghanistan, the US lost some 2,500 dead, and other nations substantially less. What’s important here is not just the difference in the human cost—the casualties were not a major factor in the decision to withdraw, unlike in earlier conflicts—but rather the belief that this would be the model for the future. Units could be sent on operational tours and would come back basically intact. The idea that—as now in Ukraine—whole units could be wiped out or rendered operationally useless, had disappeared from the understanding of the Western Strategic Class. The Russian preparedness to take significant casualties in support of major, long-term political objectives has caused variously fear, disbelief and incomprehension in the West.

I have mixed feelings about what I’m calling “AI guilt.” On one hand I see incredible accessibility applications, but also the corrosive side of the technology.
I’m not sure if I’m down with blaming end users. I can see where people are coming from, but anyone driving a car or using a smartphone or a computer or literal sausage is “pretending not to know how the sausage is made” so I don’t think it’s as simple as “use AI === bad.” That’s not a consistent, compelling argument to me.

Three individuals police claim to be cadres of CPI (Maoist) were killed in an exchange of fire with security forces in the Indravati region of Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district on Saturday, a police official announced to the press today.
According to the police official, the skirmish began when a joint team of security personnel, comprising jawans from the CRPF, Commando Battalion for Resolute Action, Special Task Force (STF) and District Reserve Guard (DRG), acting on specific intelligence inputs about the presence of Maoists along the forested terrain on the far side of Indravati river in Bhairamgarh, was out on an anti-Maoist combing operation.
In his report, the police official declared that at around 9am an encounter broke out between a squad of persons police claim were Maoists and the security forces, adding that the bodies of three alleged Maoists and a cache of weapons and explosives were recovered from the spot.
In his statement to the press, the police official said that the bodies recovered at the site of the gun battle are yet to be identified, and that there has been no report of any security personnel sustaining injuries in the firefight.
The police official concluded his remarks by stating that the encounter is still reported to be underway with intermittent firing continuing, and that more details about the skirmish are awaited.
According to police sources, Bijapur is among the seven most Maoist-affected districts in Bastar zone, and is cited by police as an epicenter of the Maoists in southern Chhattisgarh state.
