what i'm discovering about twitter now is there are a bunch of internal "community notes" sock puppet accounts with auto-generated names that they use to game the fact checking.

it's kind of like free speech but with a sophisticated, multi-layered suppression and shadow banning and fact checking system built in so that yea you can say mostly whatever you want, but they'll swiftly send it into a black hole to whatever extent they deem necessary

the community notes might also be AI, not entirely sure. something definitely not right under the hood over there

It's mini ITX, with 3 potential finishes: a jade green, a silver, and a matte black, which is the one they sent me.

It comes with Intel 13th or 14th gen CPUs, up to an i9 14900, it can accommodate 2 M.2 SSDs and 2 SATA 3 drives, up to 24 terabytes in total. It can come with or without dedicated graphics, which can go up to a Radeon RX 7700XT, or an Nvidia RTX 4070. It can also get up to 96 gigs of DDR5 RAM, and it obviously has wifi and bluetooth, and it comes with Linux preinstalled, Tuxedo OS being the default.

The model Tuxedo sent me has an i7 13700, 1TB of PCIe 3 SSD, 32 gigs of RAM, and the RX 7700XT with 12 gigs of VRAM.

Bazzite

So, Bazzite is a weird one: it's based on Fedora Atomic, so it's an "immutable" distro, and it's built using universal blue, which is a build system that lets you create tailored distro images for plenty of purposes.

I ran all the games at the native resolution of my monitor, so 3440x1440. Horizon is run using the latest version of Proton from Valve, the rest are native Linux games. Everything was ran at their max settings, at the native resolution, without any resolution scaling. Everything ran under Wayland, with all the latest updates applied.

So, For Horizon Zero Dawn, running the benchmark gave me an average of 80 FPS at these maxed out settings.
In Shadow of the Tomb Raider, I got 105 FPS on average in the benchmark, and for Total War Warhammer 3 on the battle benchmark, it reached 56.4 FPS and 52.5 FPS on the campaign benchmark.

Nobara

Next is Nobara. This isn't an immutable distribution, it's Fedora, plus a lot of kernel patches, addons, drivers and tools focused specifically on gaming and on improving performance

In Shadow of the Tomb Raider, I got 106 FPS on average in the benchmark.
In Total War Warhammer 3's battle benchmark, I got 57 FPS on average, and 54.7 FPS on average for the campaign benchmark.
In Horizon Zero Dawn, Nobara got 80 FPS on average.

HoloISO

I also gave a shot to HoloISO, in its new immutable form, but it never managed to give me a bootable system, no matter how hard I tried.

Chimera OS

Chimera OS is an arch based distribution, it's an atomic distro, so immutable, and includes a bunch of emulation tools as well as optimizations for gaming. It defaults to GNOME as its desktop, compared to KDE for the other distros I tested.

In Shadow of the Tomb Raider, I got 102 FPS on average in the benchmark, similar to other distros I tested.
In Total War Warhammer 3's battle benchmark, I got 55.3 FPS on average, and 51.1 FPS on average for the campaign benchmark.
In Horizon Zero Dawn, Chimera OS got 73 FPS on average, strangely lower than other distributions.

Tuxedo OS

Just for fun, I decided to also run all of these games on the preinstalled Tuxedo OS, to see if these gaming distros offer improved performance compared to a "normal" system. Here are the results.

In Horizon Zero Dawn, at the max resolution and max settings, with any upscaling, The Atlas S running Tuxedo OS got 81 FPS on average.

In Shadow of the Tomb Raider, at the max settings and resolution, Ubuntu 24.04 reached 106 FPS on average.

In Total War Warhammer 3's battle benchmark, at the max settings and resolution, I got 57 FPS on average, and in the campaign benchmark, it reached 54.9 FPS

The EU is preparing for trade talks with the US and has warned of retaliatory tariffs if Trump follows through on his tariff threats, including a 50% levy on steel and aluminum imports.

The EU has approved tariffs on €21 billion of US goods and is preparing an additional list of tariffs on €95 billion of American products.

I tried a few methods for Office. First, I went with Bottles, but it is a flatpak app, and as such is sandboxed, and doesn't have access to some system libraries, including Winbind.

I then moved on to the latest stable version of Wine, version 9.0. I followed a nice tutorial that felt like it could work, I left a link to it in the description.

But, after about 20 minutes, I got this error, which, looking at it online, seems to affect Windows users too, except I don't have the tools on Linux to fix the error, since it seems to require the windows control panel to fix.

Last thing I tried: installing Office 365 inside a Windows VM, and copying the files over. As expected, pasting all the Office related files in the respective directories in Wine's virtual C Drive didn't do anything, even after adding the few regedit changes mentioned by the online tutorial I found.

Next was Adobe Photoshop. I tried using the PlayOnLinux built-in script, just to see, but it failed immediately, because it couldn't download the file.

I then decided to create a wine prefix to try and install it using basic Wine Stable. Nothing here, the installer never actually displays any window that I could interact with, it's stuck, and the terminal doesn't show any specific error or missing DLL I could try to fix.
Time to install things inside of a Windows VM, and to try copying the files over, because I've been told this can work.

I copied all the directories, and I tried running the photoshop executable from Bottles, and... it didn't work either. DLLs are missing from the install, for some reason or another, and can't be found.

Now, let's move on to Affinity Software, something a lot of people would love to see on Linux. I tried to run that installer with Wine inside of Bottles, but it fails immediately, apparently something like not having an icon in the installer, a required field not being there or something along those lines.
Trying to run it with Wine gives the same error, and also doesn't work.

Finally, I decided to give a shot to Autocad, another program often cited as a big missing piece for Linux. Trying to run the installer with Bottles failed immediately, a bunch of DLLS are apparently missing from the default Wine install.

Now, I'm sure someone will mention here that I haven't tried Crossover, the paid tool made by Codeweavers, the biggest contributor to Wine. And that's why I'll mention them here: in their compatibility database, none of these programs are listed as supported either. The only one that could work is Photoshop CC 2019, that has a rating of 3 stars, which means "limited Functionality".

Neither Office 365, the latest Photoshop CC, Autocad 2020, or Affinity Designer or Photo work under Crossover either, and if it there was a single way, even ultra convoluted, to get these working, you know the developers of the PAID option would have built a script to make all the necessary changes, and they'd have advertised it heavily.

Proton isn't translating Windows instructions, in fact there are no "windows instructions", there are Intel / AMD x86 instructions and since these are the same regardless of the operating system, they don't actually need translation. What does is Windows library calls and system calls, these need to be translated to Linux equivalents, and wine actually does this translation, NOT proton, proton only sets up an environment for wine to operate more effectively, making sure all the necessary windows DLLs (library files) are present, etc.

I wanted to get an nvidia p100 Tesla 16gb for cheap vram and compute on a headless server. Some of the cards on eBay have the "full length" big bracket plate and some are ripped off because some PCs have a shorter plate system. I just want o make sure I don't have any problems but it looks like a full size jut wanted some confirmation. I don't know what a DIMMS is but if you mean the ram sticks, yes. I didnt know much about PCs when I installed them just kept putting them in for some reason installing a fourth made the system not run. I'll have to figure that situation out sometime.

Ok, I wasn't expecting a server-class card but it should be fine without its support bracket. Generic cases generally wouldn't have a place to connect the support to. (Some might, but I can't see the rest of the case. Your picture doesn't actually show how much space you have to insert a longer card.)

The dimensions of the P100 is 10.5 inches in length and 4.4 inches in height, so you should be able to measure for clearance. My 7900 XTX is 11.3in, and it will fit in many towers so I have confidence that the P100 will fit in yours.

Still, It's a long card so you might want to look around for a generic GPU support bracket to keep it from sagging over the long-term.

DIMMs (dual inline memory modules) are your ram sticks, yes. Typically, they run in pairs for best performance. So, generally, you would populate slot B and slot D for the first pair and slot A and C for the second pair. Regardless, the PC will generally still run with mismatched pairs, but it will clock itself down to the speed of the slowest module installed and may run in single-channel mode. This, in turn, slows the performance of the entire PC down by creating a bottleneck on the memory bus.

Edit: I haven't thought about slot height in a while, but standard cases are going to be full-height cards. Half-height cards are more niche.

I don't think space/length of cardwill be an issue. While I still have your attention I wanted to ask. In as simple an explanation as you can muster, what do I need to connect multiple GPUs to one motherboard? I don't quite understand how pcie lanes and bridges and all that work but from what I read its possible and you can use different manufactuer GPUs together for the case I'm doing. But how?? Theres only one slot. I know some boards have 2 or even 4 but theres homlabs with like 10 p100s chained together
