@cjd @djsumdog let's see how it works out when Manifest V3 is the only option.

People cheering for Chrome is the worst thing. Remember Google is an ad company, all their tech services and shit are there just to let them sell more ads. You can be sure they are working to make it so adblockers are, if not outright impossible to use, at least very annoying to do so.

ah yes, the fall of Mozilla ... been a really slow suicide for them since 2014.

I still have hope that one day Brendan Eich will be reappointed to the board of Mozilla and apologize to the world for Javascript.

For the past two weeks I have been working on support for #Pixelfed (github.com/poetaster/harbour-t…) and multiple accounts (github.com/poetaster/harbour-t…) in #Tooter Beta by @poetaster, which is a SailfishOS Mastodon client.

Now I don't need to open the web browser to check latest pictures from people I follow 😀

ICE shows up at a construction site and nearly everybody takes off running.
This is amusing to me, but also annoying. There needs to be enforcement against the people that are hiring these illegals.
From my experience, they are mostly used to improve profit margins not provide lower prices, displacing local citizens from potential employment in the process.

A crazy lady who runs a bronchietasis forum keeps urging me to go off my Crohn's medication because it's an immunosuppressant and she's against immunosuppressants. I don't like them either, but I like randomly shitting my pants less. Everyone thinks they know about Crohn's disease unless they HAVE Crohn's disease (not some other intestinal distress), then they switch to dear god anything that keeps you from shitting your pants, do that. Everyone else tells me to only eat meat, or to eat fresh dirt (seriously!), or to "wean off" my biologic drug (if she knew how biologics worked she'd know there's no weaning off, you develop antibodies immediately and once you go off or even use them less, they lose 100% efficacy and you can't go back on).

In Limpopo, South Africa, a government-backed agricultural initiative saw 30 cows gifted to beneficiaries to support farming. However, instead of establishing a livestock farming enterprise, the recipients hosted a community braai and consumed the cattle.

The cows were very emaciated to start with...

Parmi eux #BHL Bernard-Henri Lévy, #EnricoMacias, l'animateur #Arthur, l'acteur #PhilippeLellouche, l'essayiste #CélinePina, l'homme politique Amine El Khatmi, cofondateur du Printemps républicain.

GNOME 45 video: youtu.be/RQSA0nZaF6M

The installer is still Anaconda, not the new one. You're getting the kernel 6.5. Fedora 39 also drops the modular repos. You're still not getting DNF 5, the new version of the package manager. Other changes include dropping the custom theming for Qt apps, changing the default color of the terminal, and there's a new spin of Fedora Silverblue, the immutable distro, but this time with Budgie as its desktop, it's called Fedora Onyx.

Of course, the biggest changes to your experience on Fedora will be with GNOME 45. So, the first change will be to Activities, with the new workspaces indicator, when you click it, it opens the activities view, but visually, it now shows your current virtual desktop as an elongated pill, and the other virtual desktops as small circles. The app menu also disappeared from the top bar in the process.

In the quick settings, you now get the ability to control keyboard backlight. You can also open the quick settings menu by pressing Super + S, and you can now click a background app to open its window, and you'll get a small indicator when closing one of these background apps.

Finally, in the top bar, you'll get a new webcam activity indicator.

Apart from that, there's a new "split headerbar look" that reached a few apps. In terms of apps, Nautilus gained a way faster search: tracker. Once a search has completed, you also get a "Search everywhere" button that lets you search the whole filesystem.

GNOME 45 also brings a new image viewer, called Loupe, Cheese, the camera app, is replaced with Snapshot, GNOME console got a new preference item to customize fonts, GNOME maps gained a new experimental vector based tileset.

As per GNOME Software, you can now clear all the user data associated with a flatpak app when you uninstall it, and you'll see messages in the search results and app details pages to let you know if a flatpak is end of life and hasn't received updates in a long time.

And now, let's talk hardware: the Fedora Slimbook. This is a partnership between Fedora, and, you guessed it, Slimbook, the linux hardware manufacturer based in Spain.

It's a 16 inch laptop, that only weighs 1.5 kilos, or 3.3 pounds. It has a 2K 16:10 display, at 2560 by 1600 at 90hz. It supports 100% of sRGB, and has a brightness of 400 nits and an anti glare coating.

The laptop has some Fedora branding, with a super key using the Fedora logo, and a Fedora logo is also present on the top left corner of the laptop. The chassis is a magnesium and aluminium alloy.

In terms of specs, you get an intel i7 12700H, it's paired with an Nvidia RTX 3050 Ti, with 4 gigs of VRAM. On top of that, you get to pick between 16, 32 or 64 gigs of RAM, running at 3200 Mhz, it's not soldered. As per storage, you get 500 gigs of SSD, with the ability to fill 2 M.2 slots with up to 4 TB in total.

In terms of I/O, the laptop comes with 2 USB A ports, 3.2 Gen 1, with 1 USB C 3.2 Gen 2 that supports display port 1.4, and one Thunderbolt 4 port that supports charging and displayport, but it's hardwired to the integrated intel GPU. There's also an HDMI port, wired to the Nvidia GPU, a headphone jack, and an SD card slot, plus a barrel charger port.

You'll get Wifi 6 and bluetooth 5.2, and an 82 WH battery, that, in my experience, gives you about 6h to 7h or regular use.

Finally, it has 2 speakers, that are solid enough and have decent sound and bass, a 1080p webcam that isn't terrible but also not that great, and a mic that's really mediocre.

It also has a wonderful feeling keyboard, and a giant touchpad, which feels absolutely fantastic to use especially for all the gestures GNOME has to navigate the desktop and the apps.

Former Chinese NVIDIA AI Engineers Are Now Working for Huawei, Reveals NVIDIA’s Chief Scientist Bill Dally, Warning Chinese Competition Is Closing In.

wccftech.com/former-chinese-nv…

The U.S. efforts to hobble China's tech advancement through export controls have not been effective. Chinese tech companies, such as Huawei, Baidu, and SMIC, are developing their own tech ecosystems. China dominates in consumer drones, autonomous vehicles, and solar panels and batteries.

SMIC, which makes Huawei's processors, is now the third-largest chipmaker in the world and has managed to innovate despite having older-generation tech.

Working through updating the #FLX1 review i wrote up a while ago and my god hopefully future phones I test both do and dont have similar battery life. I want to have full battery life numbers instead of just estimations so from 100% to the phone is off. Standby test without a sim and wifi on the entire time has been going 164 hours and still has another 16% to go. No deep sleep. Luckily the last battery test i need. Im also updating the review structure a bit to show more info.

📢 Hello, community.
We've received a lot of feedback on the Liberux NEXX — thank you for your honest input.

Thanks to Ernesto at Ecaman and his modular design (with replaceable eMMC, modem, and RAM), we're working on a more affordable version.

💡 After talking with our suppliers, we could offer an entry-level version with these specs, while still keeping the current version:

🔧 Specs:
· LTE
· 128 GB eMMC
· 16 GB RAM
💶 Price: €890

We’d love to hear your thoughts on this idea! 💬

Watch Divine D. making a test call on Phosh. This was only to try the call application, power consumption and connectivity. There are many other scenarios for such a test, such as during low-power modes, running performance applications, audio quality, audio routing, bluetooth HFP mode.. We will be covering those as the hardware revisions and software improve.

The redesigned annotation workflow has landed in Papers Nightly!

There are a few minor things left (such as recoloring the icons), but what has already landed is a huuuge improvement to the workflow. Thanks so much to @pabloyoyoista, @camelCaseNick, lbaudin and the rest of the team for reviving this app ❤️

Handbrake alternative with VA-API support

Handbrake alternative with VA-API support

I recently switched to an AMD GPU and VA-API is the only option for hardware acceleration on linux that is viable. But Handbrake does not support it and it doesn't seem like it will in the foreseeable future, so I am looking for an alternative. Ideally it is just an ffmpeg GUI, but I did not find any that are:
- actually compatible with linux
- updated in the last 5 years
- have an option vor h264_vaapi or hevc_vaapi video codecs

Another workflow I thought about that is not working is transcoding the video, but copy all audio and subtitles and let handbrake handle that, however Handbrake has no option to just copy the video stream...

So far I have tried:
- ffmpeg_batch: wouldn't use my local version of ffmpeg, because of some path error, only works through wine
- qwinff: got it building, but no VA-API codec, and no mkv output support (over 10 years old)
- Shutter Encoder: only works through wine, font problems, no va-api support
- Avidemux: takes forever to open a video clip, more of a video editor, no va-api support
- Hybrid: know it from my windows days, clunky UI, no va-api support, but best candidate for me right now as I could use it to just copy video and handle audio and subtitles in here
- StaxRip: the .7z file could not be extracted, I just got an error

Any ideas or suggestions?

in reply to who

HandBrake supports AMD VCN hardware video encoding

yes, but that is not viable as the amdgpu-pro drivers are only available on LTS releases and on a few selected distros

You haven't said what source material you're encoding

Mostly BluRay rips, so movies and TV-Shows

Are you aware of Vulkan Video?

I actually was not. Is it any good? But Handbrake does not support that either, does it?

you might consider investing some time in learning ffmpeg commands.

I am, but for anything involving multiple audio and subtitle streams and stream selection in general it is not an option for me...

in reply to BentiGorlich

Are you sure? I would expect AMD to have their own download & install instructions that could be used on any distro. That would be more work for you than just installing a package directly from your distro, of course.

Curiously, I just found a comment from last year claiming that amf-amdgpu-pro now works with Mesa's RADV. So maybe this approach could work without AMD's proprietary driver?

Mostly BluRay rips, so movies and TV-Shows

By rips, do you mean your source media is already in a container, like a .mkv or .mp4 file? Or are you encoding directly from optical discs? If it's the latter, then using a tool other than HandBrake for the encode might also require finding a disc ripping tool. (Not all encoding tools can decrypt and demux discs.)

I actually was not. Is it any good? But Handbrake does not support that either, does it?

I haven't used Vulkan Video. It's just an API, so I would expect the video quality to depend on your hardware's encoder, just as it would with VAAPI or any other API.

I don't think Handbrake supports it yet, so until they do, I think you would have to use some other encoding tool.

for anything involving multiple audio and subtitle streams and stream selection in general it is not an option for me…

You haven't said why, but if it's just that managing lots of streams using command line tools is more hassle than you want to deal with, you might take a look at MKVToolNix. It's pretty good at muxing, even if the source media is not a .mkv file.

The hoppy IPA-ish beer I brewed (nearly) 2 weeks ago seems to be done fermenting at 1.008 (temp corrected) making it 7.5% abv.

It tastes pretty good, has a nice bitterness on the higher side for my palate but not too painful. Aroma is tropical/pineapple. It definitely needs a dry hop to bring it to where I want it to be, but overall, I think it's turned out well so far. I wish it wasn't as dry as it is, but it's not wrecking the beer by any means.
