Traditional street lighting systems often rely on outdated technologies

Street lighting like led warehouse lighting high bay is one of the most essential services provided by municipalities, yet it can also be one of the most energy-intensive. Managing street lighting effectively not only improves public safety and livability but also plays a key role in reducing energy consumption and lowering operational costs. With thoughtful planning and modern technology, cities and towns can achieve both safety and sustainability.

Traditional street lighting systems often rely on outdated technologies that consume large amounts of electricity and require frequent maintenance. In contrast, modern systems using LED fixtures offer greater efficiency, longer service life, and better quality of light. Transitioning to LED lighting can significantly reduce a city's energy footprint while maintaining or even enhancing illumination standards.

A smart energy management strategy starts with an assessment of the existing street lighting infrastructure. Municipalities should consider the age, condition, and energy use of current fixtures. This helps identify opportunities for upgrades, retrofitting, or complete replacement. Many cities begin with pilot projects in selected areas to evaluate performance and build community support.

Lighting control systems are another important part of modern energy management. These systems allow cities to adjust lighting levels based on real-time conditions such as traffic flow, pedestrian presence, or time of night. Dimming lights during low-traffic hours or using motion sensors in less active areas can lead to substantial energy savings. Moreover, these systems offer remote monitoring, which simplifies maintenance and reduces response time to outages.

Energy-efficient lighting also contributes to broader environmental goals. Reducing electricity usage helps lower greenhouse gas emissions and supports climate action initiatives. Additionally, thoughtful lighting design can minimize light pollution, protecting natural habitats and improving nighttime quality of life for residents.

Financing these upgrades may seem daunting, but various funding models are available. Energy savings performance contracts, government grants, and public-private partnerships can ease the financial burden. In many cases, the long-term energy savings and reduced maintenance costs can offset the initial investment.

Public engagement is also important. When residents understand the benefits of energy-efficient street lighting — including cost savings, environmental impact, and improved safety — they are more likely to support new initiatives. Transparency in planning and implementation helps build trust and ensures that changes reflect the needs of the community.

In summary, effective energy management in street lighting is a vital responsibility for municipalities seeking to modernize their infrastructure and improve quality of life. By embracing energy-efficient technologies and smart lighting controls, cities can create safer, more sustainable, and economically resilient urban environments.

#Palestine / Illegal outposts erected in villages in Masafer Yatta in attempt to expel residents

In early May, most homes in the village of Khalat a-Daba in Masafer Yatta were demolished by the Civil Administration, forcing residents into tents and caves. Settlers then established an outpost inside two caves, displacing families and bringing hundreds of sheep and goats that damaged trees.

After the settlers left, residents feared they were promised something in return for dismantling the outpost themselves. According to Jaber Dbabsa, this mirrors the situation in Mughayyir al-Deir (a small Palestinian Bedouin community located about 5 kilometers southeast of the village Yatta, was inhabited by around 25 families from the Ka’abneh tribe). Despite the destruction and confiscation of property, the residents of Khalat a-Daba remain.

Following the demolition of homes, settlers attacked the village, leading to arrests. A resident was arrested for filing a complaint after settlers occupied his cave. Attacks by the army and settlers have increased in recent years, with homes burned and pogroms [note the use of the loaded term #pogrom in the original text in Hebrew] committed.

Since the start of the war, residents of over 60 communities in Area C have been displaced, and more than 80 outposts have been established. According to Souod Dbabsa, settlers want to control the village to disconnect the other villages in Masafer Yatta.

[…] Dababsa claims that the settlers and the army are working together: "They say it is a firing zone, but the law applies only to us and not to the settlers. The goal is to expel us. They do not care about our ownership documents. They brought the herding outposts to take from us everything we need to exist. There is nowhere to go with the sheep. It's all one plan, in Gaza and here. They want to expel everyone. But we have nowhere else, we will not leave."

Apropos Mughayyir al-Deir, which is mentioned as a precedent, in May 2025, settlers, with the support or acquiescence of the Israeli military, set up a new outpost inside the village, leading to the displacement of the community. Over 100 settlers and hilltop youth attacked nearby Palestinian villages, burning homes and vehicles, while the military seized additional land purportedly for security reasons. The evacuation was marked by violence against residents and human rights activists attempting to protect them. Hebrew mistaclim.org/en/articles/the-…

Federal Report Simulates July 4th 2025 Bioterror Attack as the FDA Goes Rogue

In April 2024, the Bipartisan Commission on Biodefense released The National Blueprint for Biodefense: Immediate Action Needed to Defend Against Biological Threats, a little-known but deeply alarming federally commissioned report. It outlines a simulated bioterror attack on July 4, 2025, using a genetically engineered Nipah virus that kills 280,000 Americans in a single day and devastates livestock. The virus, in the scenario, is modified for high transmissibility and retains a fatality rate exceeding 40%.

Ich habe so meine Probleme mit beiden Bildern. Inzwischen.
Zunächst muß "I stand with Israel" nicht gleichbedeutend mit "Ich finds geil, was die Israelische Politik und die IDF gerade so treibt", sondern schlicht und einfach für das Existenzrecht Israels zu stehen.
Im Gegensatz geht es um "Free Palestine". Was heißt das?

This is #Israel. This is what the Zionist project looks like. The dead kids. The blown-out hospitals. The desperate, starving civilians. This is it.

There is no alternate version of Israel where these things are not happening. The liberal Zionist vision of a two-state solution and a just and peaceful Israel exists solely in the imaginations of the people who envision it. Nothing like it has ever existed. Everything about the modern state of Israel is unyieldingly hostile to that vision.

You either support the existence of the Israel you see before you, or you support the end of the apartheid Zionist entity. There is no hidden third option. There are no other positions on the menu. To pretend otherwise is to live in a fantasy land.

You either want to burn children alive, or you don’t. You either want to deliberately starve civilians, or you don’t. You either want to bomb hospitals, or you don’t. You either want to deliberately assassinate Palestinian journalists while forbidding foreign journalists entry into Gaza, or you don’t.
You either want to deliberately #massacre civilians and systematically destroy civilian infrastructure in order to force the removal of Palestinians from a Palestinian territory, or you don’t.

And if you don’t, you must oppose the state of Israel.
That’s Israel, the state. Not just Netanyahu. Not just extremist settlers. Not just “far right elements within the Israeli government”. Israel itself. Because everything we are seeing Israel do is the result of everything Israel is as a state.

Everything Israel is doing is the result of everything it has always been. As soon as the west decided to drop a settler-colonialist state on top of a pre-existing civilization wherein the new immigrants would receive preferential treatment over the indigenous inhabitants who were already living there, it became inevitable that Israel would wind up in the condition it’s in today.

Because there was no way to uphold that status quo without mass displacement and nonstop tyranny, violence and abuse. There was no way to set up a tiered society where one tier is placed above the other without indoctrinating the public to accept that apartheid system by systematically dehumanizing the members of the disempowered group.

Set up a status quo of dehumanizing a group of people and manufacturing consent for violence and abuse against them, and you will inevitably wind up with a far right #apartheid state which is committing #genocide, as surely as dropping a stone off a building will result in a stone falling to the ground.

What we are seeing in #Gaza today was baked into the state of Israel ever since its inception.

All those dead kids on your social media feed are the fruit of a tree whose seed was planted after the second world war. That tree has been bearing more and more fruit, and it will continue to for as long as it remains standing. Because that’s just the kind of tree it is. The only kind of tree it ever could have been.

Saying “I support Israel but I don’t support the actions of #Netanyahu in Gaza” is like saying “I like this apple tree but only when it sprouts coconuts instead of apples.” That is not the kind of tree it is. The apple tree will only produce apples, and the genocide tree will only produce genocide.
Israel’s supporters avoid confronting obvious truths like these. Support for Israel depends on mass-scale psychological compartmentalization. Everything about it revolves around avoiding unpleasant truths instead of deeply and viscerally reckoning with them.

Averting the eyes from the video footage of Israel’s atrocities in Gaza. Averting the eyes from the contradictions between the values they purport to hold and everything Israel is as a state. Averting the eyes from the mountains upon mountains of evidence staring us all in the face. That’s the only way support for Israel is able to continue.

In order to become a truth-driven species, we need to stop hiding from uncomfortable truths. And one of our favorite hiding places for uncomfortable truths at this point in #history is the modern state of Israel, and the western empire’s support for it.

Hot take one: calling legislation "big" and "beautiful" is branding for simpletons. So it's gonna be insanely effective for its target audience.

Hot take two: trying to ju jitsu it into "big ugly" or whatever language Schumer Dems are using is a nitwit strategy. You can't out-insult Trump. And, it only reinforces Trump branding.

This needs to be attacked with mockery. Couch fucking levels of mockery. Did Dems learn nothing from the election?

(Don't answer that.)

"The process of coding with an “agentic” LLM appears to be the process of carefully distilling all the worst parts of code review, and removing and discarding all of its benefits."

Very insightful post on #GenAI by Glyph

(Original title: I Think I’m Done Thinking About genAI For Now)

blog.glyph.im/2025/06/i-think-…

in reply to tante

I read a strongly pro-parrot-programming article recently that boiled down to "the computer does the hard work, all you have to do is review the code!" and that was the moment I lost all respect for the author's ideas and opinions forever. Very few people like doing code review, and even fewer people do it well, so "now you're *just* doing code review" seems like a terrible job that will be overwhelmingly done badly. Great outcome. No notes.
in reply to tante

@glyph thank you for sharing this. I am not surprised given that, at the foundation, an LLM is just a large linear correlation machine with randomeness sprinkled on top (some intentional, some not). Reading the article did help locate my own negative response to the technology as adjacent to that of reading a particular fantasy book series where the plots were gamed out using D&D. The first book was fresh as an early spring morning, but each succesive volume asymptotically approach an imagination killing level of ineffable sameness.

Well crap. Foxglove popped up in my yard.

Why is there more info on how to cultivate it than remove it? The AI bloat is not helping me sort through actual risk in touching it to rip it out.

I assume it should not be composted, am I incorrect? If drinking the water from a vase of foxglove can kill a small child, it would follow that you shouldn't put it in your compost, right?

I get that it's pretty, but why would anyone want to have digitalis growing in their yards? It's a literal heart stopper. Used in heart medications.

in reply to Corvid Crone

I love foxglove! So beautiful.

NOT SURE THIS IS A GOOD IDEA, but I have a friend who has a vendetta against jimson weed. Every time he sees it, he layers up a bunch of plastic bags, and rips it out using said bags to cover his hands. Then he uses the bags as a receptacle and just throws it in the trash.

EDIT: Now that I've typed that in and submitted, it sounds like a bad idea, and I think I'm going to check on my friend.
