*Feeding Ghosts* is about Hulls's quest to understand - and heal - her relationship with her mother, a half-Chinese, half-Swiss woman who escaped from China as a small child with her own mother, a journalist who had been targeted by Mao's police.
Hulls's grandmother, Sun Yi, wrote a bestselling memoir about her experiences in post-revolutionary Shanghai that made her both famous and notorious, in part because of the salacious details of Sun Yi's affair with the Swiss diplomat who fathered Rose, Hulls's mother.
In Hong Kong, Sun Yi's mental health declines precipitously. Some combination of mental illness and trauma - both from the horrors of the Sino-Japanese War and the her torture at the hands of the Chinese police - sends her into a spiral of paranoid delusions. But Sun Yi has a community of people who feel an obligation to support her in Hong Kong, including one of her rich "boyfriends."
Rose is sent away to a fancy, British-run girl's school dominated by expats where she acquires a cut-glass accent and learns to mix upper-class, colonial English gentry.
Hulls is born to Rose many years later, after Rose has emigrated to the USA, attended university, married twice - the second time to Rose's father, an Englishman - and moved her mother in with her.
For Hulls, growing up in Rose's household as the only Asian kid in a small American town, is a series of torments. Her mentally ill grandmother lives in one bedroom, gripped by delusions, compulsively writing, fretting, begging with her few English words for Rose to come back. Rose, meanwhile, is a duty-stricken domestic saint who does all the cooking and cleaning, cares for her children and her husband, and looks after her totally isolated, profoundly disturbed mother.
Hulls grows up in the shadow of the intergenerational trauma - genocide, war crimes, colonialist discrimination, untreated mental illness, and everyday American racism - that haunts her family. Rose veers from doting to shouting, terrified that Hulls is sliding into the family's madness, unable to understand or grapple with Hulls's identity as a self-proclaimed "mixed-race" Eurasian person, born in America, unable to speak Chinese or to understand her Chinese identity.
All of this biography is interspersed through several time-hopping sections that recount the history of the Chinese revolution and the lives of Sun Yi and Rose, along with scenes from the decade that Hulls spent writing and drawing *Feeding Ghosts*, during which she and her mother travel to see their family in China, on a literal and figurative journey of reconciliation.
It sounds complex and confusing, but it's anything but. Each of intertwined narratives - revolutionary China, Rose's girlhood, Hulls's girlhood, the trips to contemporary China, Hulls's adulthood and Sun Yi's institutionalizations and long isolation - are high stakes, high-tension scenarios, beautifully told. Hulls hops from one tale to the next in ways that that draw out the subtle, imporant parallels between each situation, subtly amplifying the echoes across time and space.
In the final third of this long, large book, we get to the meat of Hulls's own story: her tempestuous relationship with her mother, her mother's immersion in a psychoanalytic cult, the sad demise of Sun Yi, and the wild flight of Hulls herself, in which she breaks off her stultifying engagement and teaches herself to be a bicycle mechanic and begins cycling all over the world, living on pennies and consummating her love of wild and empty spaces.
At college, she becomes a cook through a weekly women's drunken pie-baking night, and somehow parlays that into a long session as a cook in Antarctica on McMurdo Station.
This final third acts as a kind of keystone to the many interwoven tales, as well as to the complex relationship between Hulls, her mother, and her own sense of self.
Up until this point, the different threads of Hulls's family's story are subtle echoes of one another, motifs that repeat and vary. But in this final third, the reader - and Hulls - experience a profound psychological realization,
We see how the three stories of these three generation of women, along with China's tumultuous history and the experience of an American immigrant all produced the person whose bold illustrations and sharp prose we've been immersed in for hundreds of pages. It's a *wild* moment.
Hulls's art style runs to dark, stylized inks, with horrors and ghosts puncturing individual panels' frames and wending through the page. It's a phantasmagorical experience.
*Feeding Ghosts* came out in March, and has gone on to win the Pulitzer Prize, only the second graphic novel in history to take the honor (the first was *Maus*, another memoir of intergenerational trauma, horrific war, and the American immigrant experience).
The prize is a big deal, obviously, and it's no coincidence that this kind of difficult illustrated memoir has won both graphic novel Pulitzers. Hulls joins the annals of world-altering comic-book memoirists, from Lynda Barry to Emil Ferris (*My Favorite Thing is Monsters*) to Art Spiegelman and Chester Brown.
She has pulled of a magnificent feat, one that illuminates history, contemporary racial and gender politics, the immigrant experience, and the impossible problems of parents and children in the aftermath of unspeakable trauma.

Deux soldats franco-israéliens sont visés par une plainte de plusieurs ONG, déposée ce 1er juillet à Paris, pour crimes de guerre, crimes contre l’humanité et génocide commis à Gaza.
Ce mardi 1er juillet 2025, une coalition d’organisations de défense des droits humains engage une procédure judiciaire contre deux ressortissants franco-israéliens, accusés d’avoir commis des exécutions sommaires à Gaza, entre novembre 2023 et mars 2024.
La Fédération internationale pour les droits humains (FIDH), qui regroupe 188 organisations dans 116 pays, a déposé une plainte avec constitution de partie civile auprès du pôle « crimes contre l’humanité » du tribunal judiciaire de Paris. Elle est accompagnée dans cette démarche par la Ligue des droits de l’Homme (LDH), l’Association France Palestine Solidarité (AFPS), ainsi que par les ONG palestiniennes Al-Haq, Al Mezan et le Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR).

Deux noms apparaissent dans le dossier : Sasha A. et Gabriel B., snipers de nationalité franco-israélienne, membres d’une unité spéciale de l’armée israélienne. Selon les associations, les deux hommes sont impliqués dans des « atteintes volontaires à la vie constitutives de crimes de guerre, de crimes contre l’humanité et de génocide ». Le dossier repose notamment sur un reportage du journaliste palestinien Younis Tirawi et une série de témoignages recueillis par les ONG sur le terrain à Gaza. La Ghost Unit, unité d’élite qui s’affiche et revendique ses actes
Au cœur de l’affaire : une unité militaire israélienne baptisée Ghost Unit. Cette unité de tireurs d’élite, rattachée à la 202e brigade de parachutistes de Tsahal, est mise en cause dans une campagne systématique d’exécutions de civils, documentée pendant plusieurs mois.
Dans un documentaire de 38 minutes diffusé fin 2024, Younis Tirawi dévoile l’identité, les visages et les nationalités des membres de cette unité. Une photo de groupe, tirée des réseaux sociaux, révèle que près de la moitié des soldats possèdent une double nationalité, notamment française, belge, allemande, italienne et américaine.
Tous les éléments constitutifs du crime sont là : c’est revendiqué, filmé, documenté.
A. Deswaef
Mais ce qui est particulièrement frappant, c’est l’aveu filmé d’un sergent de l’unité, affirmant face caméra des tirs, parfois à plus d’un kilomètre de distance, sur des personnes non armées, le tout avec l’aval de ses supérieurs. « Ce qui est effarant, c’est qu’il revendique ouvertement les crimes de guerre. Il précise même tirer à proximité des hôpitaux. Tous les éléments constitutifs du crime sont là : c’est revendiqué, filmé, documenté », s’indigne Alexis Deswaef, avocat et vice-président de la FIDH. Des témoignages accablants de victimes de snipers
Les éléments du reportage sont corroborés par des témoignages recueillis par des ONG à Gaza. Dans un document consulté par nos soins, plusieurs témoins racontent comment des proches, enfants, femmes, blessés, ont été visés délibérément par des tireurs postés sur les toits autour des hôpitaux Al-Quds et Nasser. Un père raconte que sa fille de 17 ans a été tuée « d’une balle dans la tête » alors qu’elle rentrait à l’hôpital chercher de l’eau. Une autre famille rapporte que trois frères ont été tués dans la rue, tandis que leur mère, venue demander une ambulance, a elle aussi été blessée par balle.

En février 2024, de nombreuses vidéos attestent de tirs de snipers sur des personnes non armées aux alentours de l’hôpital Al-Quds. Des images d’un enfant mort au sol devant le portail, un médecin (les liens suivants contiennent des scènes explicites qui peuvent ne pas convenir à tous les publics) pris pour cible, un homme âgé rampant, en sang, en train de rentrer dans l’hôpital sous le bruit des tirs parmi de nombreuses autres scènes tout aussi choquantes.
Les témoignages, enregistrés par Al Mezan et d’autres ONG, pointent tous un même mode opératoire, dans les mêmes zones et périodes que celles ciblées par l’enquête. « Le recoupement de ces récits avec les faits documentés dans le reportage laisse penser que les soldats de la Ghost Unit pourraient être impliqués dans l’ensemble de ces crimes », explique Issam Younis, directeur d’Al Mezan. Un objectif clair : briser l’impunité
Alors que la plainte cible deux individus précis, le dossier soulève une question bien plus vaste : celle du nombre et du rôle des Franco-Israéliens dans l’armée israélienne. Depuis le début des massacres, plusieurs centaines de citoyens binationaux, jusqu’à 4 000 ressortissants français, serviraient actuellement dans l’armée israélienne.
En décembre 2024, une plainte similaire avait déjà été déposée en France contre Yoel O., un sniper franco-israélien accusé de torture et d’exactions à l’encontre de prisonniers palestiniens. « À ce jour, aucune enquête n’a encore été ouverte », rappelle le communiqué de la FIDH. Ces procédures sont engagées pour rompre avec ce que les ONG dénoncent comme un cycle d’impunité judiciaire. « S’il peut le dire face caméra, c’est qu’il sait qu’il ne risque rien. Il y a un sentiment d’impunité totale. Nous pensons que seule une première décision judiciaire, en France, en Belgique ou ailleurs, pourra briser ce cycle », insiste Alexis Deswaef.

La plainte s’appuie sur le principe de compétence universelle prévu par le droit français. Comme le rappelle l’avocat, « en France, comme en Belgique, des ressortissants peuvent être poursuivis pour crimes de guerre ou contre l’humanité commis à l’étranger. Et ce, même en leur absence ».
Selon la FIDH, cette affaire présente une spécificité majeure : l’essentiel des éléments probants sont déjà disponibles au moment du dépôt de plainte. Entre les aveux filmés, les témoignages et les éléments de géolocalisation, les ONG estiment que la justice peut avancer rapidement. « D’ordinaire, dans ce type de dossier, il faut attendre des années pour obtenir des preuves. Ici, ce sont les auteurs eux-mêmes qui les apportent. La justice peut donc agir, y compris en l’absence des suspects. » Pour une coordination judiciaire internationale
La plainte déposée ce mardi en France n’est que la première étape. Des procédures équivalentes seront engagées en Allemagne et en Italie, tandis qu’une enquête est déjà en cours en Belgique contre un membre de la Ghost Unit. En Colombie, la Hind Rajab Foundation a déjà déposé une plainte pénale contre un des deux hommes, Gabriel B., repéré sur son territoire.
Il n’y a pas d’exception israélienne. La boussole doit rester le droit international.
A. Deswaef
Les ONG appellent à une coordination européenne des enquêtes. « Il ne peut pas y avoir deux poids, deux mesures. Ce qui serait fait pour des binationaux russes partis se battre en Ukraine doit l’être pour des binationaux israéliens engagés dans des crimes à Gaza », souligne Deswaef. « Il n’y a pas d’exception israélienne. La boussole doit rester le droit international. »
Si les suspects restent en Israël, ils ne seront pas réellement inquiétés. Mais pour la FIDH, une condamnation ne serait pas seulement symbolique. « Ils ne pourraient plus sortir d’Israël sans risquer une arrestation immédiate dans un autre pays. Et un jour, même en Israël, un changement de pouvoir pourrait les rattraper. »
La plainte pourrait aussi ouvrir la voie à des enquêtes sur la chaîne de commandement, puisque les snipers affirment avoir agi sur ordre hiérarchique. Un organigramme militaire de la Ghost Unit serait en cours de reconstitution par les ONG, en vue de remonter vers les donneurs d’ordres. À ce jour, aucune juridiction n’a encore jamais condamné un binational israélien pour des crimes de guerre commis à Gaza. Ces plaintes espèrent en terminer avec ce silence.

Le journal ajoute que “Le cœur du litige serait dû à des évolutions dans le régime fiscal sénégalais. Le groupe pétrolier considère que les exigences sénégalaises contreviennent à des clauses contractuelles censées protéger les investisseurs en cas de changements fiscaux ou légaux. Or entre la signature du contrat de Sangomar, en 2004, qui s’appuyait sur le code pétrolier de 1998, et les revendications des contrôleurs d’impôts, le texte régissant le secteur des hydrocarbures a changé, en 2019.” Souvent, nous avons parlé dans l’Instant Porcher de ces grands groupes qui exploitent les ressources dans les pays africains. De cette relation d’interdépendance mais aussi de la mainmise de l’Occident sur le continent africain. La procédure lancée par le groupe pétrolier peut durer des années. Et Le Monde rappelle : “l’Etat (sénégalais) est engagé dans une course contre la montre. Surendettement, note souveraine dégradée, gel du financement du Fonds monétaire international (FMI) à hauteur de 1,8 milliard de dollars ayant pour effet de suspendre d’autres financements comme ceux de l’Union européenne (UE)… Les marges de manœuvre du Sénégal, extrêmement limitées, contraignent les autorités à multiplier audits et redressements. Du français Eiffage au turc Summa, beaucoup de grands groupes passent sous les fourches caudines des inspecteurs des impôts.” Cela démontre dans quel étau l’Occident a placé les pays africains avec des ressources.
Le fameux “conclave” sur la réforme des retraites par François Bayrou a fini sur un échec… assez prévisible me direz vous. On l’avait dit ici. SPD Politiker und Ex-Staatssekretär Christian Lange tritt aus der Kirche aus — aus Protest gegen das Kirchenasyl. Die kirchliche Praxis (durch der in diesem Beispiel drei Menschen aus Somalia Asyl gewährt wurde) sei eine Missachtung rechtsstaatlicher Entscheidungen.
Ein Mensch mit Herz wäre aus der SPD ausgetreten, aus Protest gegen deren Versuch das Kirchenasyl abzuschaffen und den Familiennachzug auszusetzen. Alle Verbrechen der Menschheit waren rechtsstaatlich, das ist nicht die Norm nach der man sich richten sollte.

In der Debatte zur deutschen Asylpolitik hält sich die Vorstellung, dass Menschen an den Grenzen Deutschlands ohne Weiteres zurückgewiesen werden können.
Nun, man kann das Kirchenasyl auch als Rechtsbruch ablehnen (Wie würden wir denn über ein Moschee-Asyl denken? Oder ein Fußball-Asyl? Ein Unternehmensasyl für Spargelstecher?), aber der Austritt ist der falsche Weg, die Diskussion in der Kirche darüber zu führen. Wenn die Kirchen sich zu sehr in die Politik einmischen, ist es den Herren auch nicht Recht (Bei Abtreibungen gerne, bei Sozialrecht bitte nicht).
Also ich kann Herrn Lange hier überhaupt nicht nachvollziehen. Bin zwar kein Jurist, aber mir scheint die Tatsache, dass es vom BAMF ein offizielles Merkblatt gibt, wie Kirchenasyl funktioniert, doch sehr dafür zu sprechen, dass Kirchenasyl ausreichend in unsere rechtsstaatlichen Strukturen eingebunden ist.

Mobile compatibility is another challenge. Many affordable sites aren't fully optimized for phones, leading to awkward navigation or checkout issues. With mobile shopping so prevalent, this can be a major problem.
Security is also a concern. Some cheap website designers skip essentials like SSL certificates or regular updates, leaving your store vulnerable to risks.
These problems can be fixed, but addressing them often requires effort that budget packages don't cover.

The Battle of Mohács, was the end of the Kingdom of Hungary. In the year 1522 King Louis II of Hungary married Mary of Austria, creating an alliance between the Kingdom of Hungary and the Holy Roman Empire. Ottoman sultan Suleiman the Magnificent saw the alliance between the Jagiellonian and Habsburg houses through marriage as a threat to Ottoman domination over the Balkans. In early 1526 Suleiman gathered an army of 100k men and 300 cannons to invade Hungary, taking advantage of Hungary being in a weakened state from a civil war a few years earlier. In early spring the Ottomans invaded Hungary, the Hungarians initially used hit and run tactics on the advancing Ottomans. By early July the Ottomans approached the town of Mohács. By this point King Louis had assembled an army of 30k men and 85 cannons at Mohács. By late August the Ottomans arrived at Mohács. The Hungarians argued about a battle plan, but eventually deployed for battle. The Hungarians had cavalry on the left and right flanks, with a larger amount of cavalry on the left and infantry in the center.
By the morning of August 29th the Ottomans began the battle by sending light cavalry in an outflanking maneuver to skirmish with the Hungarians. Ottomans were then sent forward to construct a camp closer to Mohács. Pál Tomori a Hungarian commander observed the Ottomans constructing their camp and ordered his cavalry on the left flank to charge the Turks. Tomori sent word to Louis to attack after his charge was seeing some success against the Ottomans. The Hungarian center and right were slow to join the battle and by the time they did the remainder of the Ottoman forces joined the battle. Eventually the overwhelming numbers of the Ottomans caused the Hungarian cavalry to flee the battle, the infantry became surrounded and crushed. The Hungarians lost 14k men the Ottomans 2k. King Louis died in the retreat as well from falling off his horse and drowning in the Danube river.
The Hungarians had an additional 25k soldiers and mercenaries scattered throughout the kingdom, had Louis managed to unite these forces with his army and fought from the much more defensible Hungarian capital of Buda(Budapest), victory or a much more difficult and costly battle for the Ottomans may have been achieved. After the defeat at Mohács the Kingdom of Hungary was spilt, The HRE took the northwest section witch became Royal Hungary, the Eastern half became independent and became known as the Voivode of Transylvania, the Southern half Sulieman took for the Ottomans. It would be another 150+ years before the HRE defeated the Ottomans at a second Battle of Mohács and freed Hungary.

Multiple Studies Now Suggest That AI Will Make Us Morons
Are we on the road to Idiocracy?
For the second time in two weeks, a study has been published that suggests that people who use AI regularly may display significantly less cognitive ability than those who don’t rely on it. The studies have bolstered critics’ accusations that AI makes you stupid.
The most recent study was conducted by the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School and looked at a sample size of over 4,500 participants. The study, which looked at the cognitive differences between people who used LLMs like ChatGPT to do research and those who used Google Search, found that the people who used chatbots tended “to develop shallower knowledge” of the subjects they were researching. Both groups were asked to research how to start a vegetable garden, with some participants randomly selected to use AI, while others were asked to use a search engine. According to the study’s findings, those who used ChatGPT gave much worse advice about how to plant a vegetable garden than those who used the search engine. Researchers write:
The shallower knowledge accrues from an inherent feature of LLMs—the presentation of results as syntheses of information rather than individual search links—which makes learning more passive than in standard web search, where users actively discover and synthesize information sources themselves. In turn, when subsequently forming advice on the topic based on what they learned, those who learned from LLM syntheses (vs. standard search results) feel less invested in forming their advice and, more importantly, create advice that is sparser, less original—and ultimately less likely to be adopted by recipients.
The study concludes that this occurred ironically because of ChatGPT’s advertised benefit—”sparing users the need to browse through results and synthesize information themselves.” Because researchers did not have to hunt for information themselves, their “depth of knowledge” was markedly lower than those who did. “In this sense, one might view learning through LLMs rather than web search as analogous to being shown the solution to a math problem rather than trying to solve it oneself,” the research concludes.
The UPenn study follows on the heels of research produced by MIT, published earlier this month, that showed a similarly problematic cognitive impact produced by AI. That study, which observed the neural activity of college students who were using ChatGPT to study, found that increased AI use resulted in reduced brain activity, or what the researchers termed “cognitive debt.” The study used an EEG machine to measure the neural activity of three different groups of students—one that used ChatGPT to study, one that used Google Search, and one that used neither. The study showed that ChatGPT users displayed markedly less cognitive activity than even those who were using Google Search to find information.
The methodology of the MIT article has since been called into question by AI enthusiasts. Critics have noted that the study in question was not peer reviewed and that a small sample size of participants makes it hardly exhaustive. Similarly, critics have argued that while the EEG measurements show certain decreases in specific forms of brain activity, that doesn’t necessarily mean that participants are “dumber” as a result. Indeed, less mental exertion (and, thus, less activity) can be a sign that a person is actually more competent at a task and doesn’t have to expend as much energy as a result. From a certain perspective, these recent assessments of AI’s cerebral impact reek of a moral panic about a new and not altogether well-understood phenomenon.
On the other hand, the conclusion that using an app to complete a homework assignment makes you less capable of thinking for yourself would appear to be self-evident. Outsourcing mental duties to a software program means you’re not performing those duties yourself, and, as is pretty well established, doing something yourself is often the best way to learn. Of course, the internet has been curtailing human mental activity since it first went online. When was the last time you had to remember how to get somewhere? It really seems like Google Maps collectively robbed us of that ability over a decade ago.
Other evidence for AI’s stupidification effect is even more obvious: the maelstrom of cheating that’s been happening in America’s educational system means that students are making their way through high school and college without learning how to write an essay or interpret a book. While there is clearly still a lot to learn about how AI impacts us, some of its side-effects seem obvious. Étonnamment, il est bien plus rare que des porteurs de deux projets constatent la similarité de leurs objectifs et de leur pile technologique, et qu’ils en viennent à envisager la fusion de leurs projets et la fédération de leurs communautés.
Lorsque cela arrive, de nombreuses questions émergent, de nature technique, juridique ou communautaire (gouvernance et animation). Il faut les traiter pour réussir cette fusion et emporter l’adhésion des deux communautés.
Mettre en commun leurs efforts pour faire émerger un projet plus fort est le choix qu’a fait le CNES (centre spatial français) et de la communauté de glaciologues GlacioHack, respectivement à l’origine de demcompare et de xdem, deux outils d’analyse de modèle numérique de surface (carte d’altitudes).
