I have been using a lot more apps from F-Droid store and oh there is so much to fucking love about #freesoftware. Yes, I understand that sometimes it may lack some flashy stuff and accessibility has a long way to go, judging by what blind folks say here. I cannot stress enough how IMPORTANT it is for me for the software not to fuck with my settings once I establish them. If I ever need to bury a treasure, you can be sure as fuck that along the silver and gold, there is going to be a plate with my #KOreader settings engraved in it
What's more, if by any chance they do something that may remotely fuck with your settings, you can bet your ass that there is going to be a warning that the version may fuck your settings, along with detailed instructions on how to unfuck the settings. Maybe even a legacy option that will say: "you, yes you weirdo, this is the option to keep that obscure box that Nobody but You uses activated"
2. They generally get better with every new version. Should updates come, its for making cool stuff that people may actually like. I use the word "may" because this is Mastodon. I am looking at the news channel for Read You, an RSS reader for Android that I LOVE, and the reactions are full of hearts and stars
3. They try not to leave people behind. If my smartwatch brand decides to sunset the support, I am fine, I am cool, because I carefully looked in Gadgetbridge to make sure their free app covered the device beforehand. Folks, always check Gadgetbridge before buying #wearablesgadgetbridge.org/
4. They do not scam you. Ever had to download an app from the Play Store because you needed, oh I don't know, a sensor reading app or something? There are a lot of garbage apps out there. In F-Droid, you can find many of them for free. No seriously, check F-Droid from time to time
5. Forking being possible. Even if an app goes in a direction some people does not like, there's always the possibility of forking it. This is not only a nice thing, it is the ultimate guarantee to de-incentivize fuck-arounds as much as possible
