Shell Accounts

Shell Accounts
A shell is a command line interface for an operating system. With most shell providers, a command line interface on one flavor of Linux or Unix is all you get. Eskimo North provides access to eight different popular Linux distributions and SunOS Unix. Eskimo North also full remote desktop capabilities using X2Go with sound, and also NX, VNC, and RPD without sound.

Account Types
We offer four different levels of shell accounts: Economy, Standard, Power, and Enterprise. Background tasks such as IRC bots, Game Servers, and the like are permitted on all account types except student. IRC servers are not permitted because of their tendency to draw denial of service attacks. Standard, Power, Enterprise, and Super-Max shells include a MySQL database allowing you to run a variety of LAMP stack based applications on your website and to use non-web based applications that require a database.

Web Hosting
Web hosting under our domain is provided with all shell accounts. You can host your own domains with virtual domains or web hosting packages.

Remote Desktop
Remote desktop capability is like having a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers plugged right into our servers. Because our servers can be accessed anywhere in the world, this allows you to have a work environment you can access from anywhere in the world without risking losing your files to a laptop, tablet, or phone thief. We offer remote desktop capabilities on all of our shell servers except for the SunOS server. We support x2go, nx, vnc, and rdp protocols. X2go is the best choice as it provides extremely efficient compression and X round trip removal as well as sound.

Applications
Applications include Office Suites such as Libre Office and Caligra (which can read and write Microsoft Office file formats), Web and Program Development tools such as Bluefish Editor as well as many other editors, compilers, interpreters, scripting languages, debuggers, profilers, and online documentation.

E-mail
Our e-mail system offers unprecedented flexibility. You can access your mail via shell mail readers including graphical mailers like Thunderbird, or via Web mail, or via pop-3 and imap mail protocols, complete with TLS encryption. Our mail system includes Bayesian filtering with Spam Assassin which can be individually configured for your needs. Procmail allows you to sort and process mail automatically. Smartlist allows you to maintain mailing lists.

Security[color]
Access to all of our servers is available via strong encryption. The shell servers all support ssh access. All of the remote desktop protocols tunnel via ssh. We maintain all of our servers up to date keep with the latest patches. Backups are made weekly.

[color=darkblue]Eskimo North has been providing Unix timeshare services since 1985. We have been providing Linux timeshare, shell access, web hosting, e-mail, and Internet services since 1992. Please take a look at our services as they support our free Federated services including Friendica, Hubzilla, Mastodon, Nextcloud, Pixelfed, and Yacy Search.

Available Shell Servers

We have a variety of Linux Servers with a variety of Linux Distributions and Desktop Environments. Linux servers in use here are of three basic lines, those derived from RedHat, such as Fedora, Centos, and Scientific Linux, and those derived from Debian such as Debian, Ubuntu, and Mint. Ubuntu is the most current and feature rich. Then there is Manjaro, derived from Arch Linux. Arch is more often broken because it is a real “do it yourself” Linux, an excellent learning platform, a good development platform, not a good production platform.

All of these servers are available if you have a shell account here. You can use them to learn various versions, decide which to install, and as one place you can develop applications for all versions. We install a wide variety of development tools on all of our publicly available servers.

Our servers listen to port 443 in addition to the standard ssh port of 22 to provide a means to connect from behind a firewall that blocks non-web access. You can also utilize Guacamole on our website (login public, password public).

Alma.Eskimo.Com
This server is running Alma 8. Alma Linux replaces Scientific Linux after it’s discontinuation. Presently we are running Alma 8 because Alma 9 does not support NIS out of the box although there are ways of hacking it in. It is unfortunate that Redhat chose to piss on the infrastructure so many organizations depend upon. This is why we tend to favor Debian derived flavors. None the less as Redhat derived software goes Alma is pretty solid.
Anduinos.Eskimo.Com
Anduinos is a Debian derived distribution that defaults to a Gnome Desktop themed to look like Windows 10. At present though this Desktop is not working over network connections, instead Mate and Gnome are presently available. I am working on some others.
Debian.Eskimo.Com
Debian Bullseye has a rich assortment of software installed, including hundreds of Games, a huge variety of Office Productivity software, many Educational and Scientific applications, a variety of Integrated Development Environments, and many programming languages. All of the documentation available online these applications is also loaded.
Fedora.Eskimo.Com
Fedora Rawhide can be accessed graphically using x2go and the Mate desktop. It has the most applications of any of the Redhat derived servers. I install just about everything I can get to work on this machine so it has a huge variety of applications installed.
Kali.Eskimo.Com
Kali is a special purpose shell server designed for penetration testing. It is primarily here to test our own internal security, and as a result, egress is extremely limited, however upon request, proof of IP space ownership, and permission of the owner and agreement to hold us harmless because it is possible some of these tests may be destructive, we will allow outbound for testing of other sites.
Manjaro.Eskimo.Com
Manjaro is a good choice for a Linux user who wants to just install and go. There is a pleasant user interface and a good choice of software in the Manjaro repositories. It is a less technical Linux than Ubuntu, you can do most things through graphical interfaces and the default xfce interface is extremely light in terms of memory footprint. Like most modern distros, a variety of Windows systems are available and we have Gnome, Mate, KDE, Xfce, LXDE, and LXQT installed.
Mint.Eskimo.Com
Mint is another recent addition to our shell servers. It is running Mint, although we have the Mate Desktop installed for graphical access. This is necessary because Unity and other compositing Desktops are incompatible with x2go and really work very roughly with VNC. If you like games, this is a good server to use and there are many installed. Mint is a derivative of Ubuntu which in turn is derived from Debian and this server thus follows the structure and layout of Debian and Ubuntu.
MxLinux.Eskimo.Com
MxLinux is an excellent choice for a computer with limited resources. Before the overhead of a Desktop is considered, MxLinux uses 200MB less RAM out of the box than does Ubuntu. If you’re not a fan of Poettering and Systemd, you’ll like this OS as it still uses a System-V init with Systemd shims to allow packages requiring systemd to function. You can also run systemd and in fact I am doing so because it boots faster. The default Desktop is LXDE which is also small and efficient. But if you like eye candy you can install any Desktop you like and as with other servers I will install all that I can get to work on this OS.
PopOS.Eskimo.Com
popOS is a modern appearing OS based upon Ubuntu, and not just indirectly, it actually utilizes Ubuntu’s repositories in addition to it’s own. The Desktops presently available on it are Gnome and Mate, though Gnome is a special edition known as Sparkle, and it does not operate properly with X2go. Presently X2go and ssh are the only two access methods. I am working on the others.
Rocky8.Eskimo.Com
Rocky8 is a RedHat derived operating system very similar to Centos before Centos was absorbed, and ruined, by Redhat. While Centos support, with the exception of Centos9 is going away on June 30th, 2024, and CentOS9 is not usable because of the deletion of NIS by RedRat which is necessary to our organization, Rocky8 will be supported for security updates through May of 2029, thus provides us a means of continuing to offer a Redhat based environment for another five years.

Ubuntu.Eskimo.Com
Ubuntu can be accessed graphically using x2go and the Mate Desktop. The native Unity desktop is a compositing desktop which is incompatible with x2go. This machine is equipped with many applications including a huge number of games, a rich assortment of development tools and computer programming languages, a huge assortment of Office productivity software, many scientific, electronic, and educational tools.
Zorin.Eskimo.Com
Zorin is a Ubuntu derived operating system. It combines the eye candy of some other Ubuntu flavors such as Mint, with the security awareness and up to date nature of Ubuntu providing a really superb server environment. This machine is our best equipped server. It has the full Ubuntu Studio Suite, a very large assortment of development tools, language packs for all supported languages, many games, both Libre and Caligra Office Suites, and much more. X2go is supported on this machine.

Crontab access, batch, and background jobs are allowed on all of our servers. Most have unrestricted outbound access with the exception of kali owing to high abuse potential for tools that exist on it.'

We also offer web hosting, e-mail, and virtual private servers.

"The Zionist War on Yiddish in Palestine", por @ayoub en Der Spekter.

«Language played a crucial role in defining the Zionist ideal. Many of those involved in advocating for Yiddish as a recognized language of the Jewish people saw their opponents as those advocating Hebrew as the sole language of the Jewish people, and vice versa. Given the context of pre-World War II politics, this also meant a certain intersection between these debates and debates on capitalism and socialism as well as diasporism, nationalism and internationalism.

(...)

The anti-Yiddish attitude prevalent among Zionists translated itself into what Israeli scholar Avi Lang called “linguistic fascism in the land of Zion.” Lang notes that “family lore in most Ashkenazi households in Israel will almost inevitably include stories of grandparents and great-grandparents experiencing discrimination whenever they spoke Yiddish in the streets of 1940s and 1950s Tel Aviv,” which included being “hit or spat at.”

(...)

The creation of a new Jewish identity under Zionism necessitated the presence of an identity that it could emulate or relate to and an “other” that it should discard. For Zionists the identity to be discarded was clear: the “diaspora Jew,” the Jew facing antisemitism in the West, who was viewed as “culturally stagnant, passive and backward.”

The European Gentile, the very source of the antisemitism that prompted Jews to turn to Zionism as a solution in the first place, on the other hand, became the identity Zionists wished to emulate. Putting it in a different way, the oppressor was to be emulated while the oppressed was to be discarded as a weak and dying breed.

(...)

There is a conscious effort to promote Jewish diasporist identity, which, in practice, means rejecting at least two of the four principles of Zionism as defined by Grabski: “The primacy of the Jewish community in Israel over Jewish communities around the world” and “attributing to Hebrew the status of being the main or even only national language in Palestine.” Whether the third principle, “the elevation of ethnic-religious conflicts over class conflicts,” is being challenged, and therefore linking diasporism to a more class-conscious internationalism, will depend on whether the rejection of Zionism is always coupled with an explicit politics of solidarity with Palestinians oppressed by the State of Israel.»

In comparison, among a matched group of people who were enrolled in RECOVER, but who were never infected with COVID, less than one out of every 100 people got ME/CFS.

This means that people enrolled in RECOVER who were infected with COVID were four times more likely to develop ME/CFS compared to those who did not get sick with COVID."

@treehugger SARS-CoV-2 is a cause of Long COVID which has a broad range of symptoms and impacts that overlap with ME/CFS, a broader diagnosis that has a range of etiologies. It makes a dangerous mishmash that confuses best treatments. Which we won't get for either because they are EACH complex diseases requiring complex and patient-centered care that is not available for most.
in reply to Lyndsay Barwell

@treehugger So is nicotine masking or a treatment? Not one I'd suggest--and given the risks of administration through tobacco....switch to low-dose psilocybin! heh. Well--seriously, that is a potential treatment--but altogether my point is that a multifactorial, overlapping and progressive condition requires a comprehensive therapeutic approach. I created my own antiviral protocol and either it resolved on its own (possible but unlikely) or that effort worked.
in reply to Lyndsay Barwell

@treehugger Thanks for this--sorry if I came off flip about nicotine. Former smoker anxiety--but yeah, the patches make sense. Does it make sense as part of a treatment regimen? Probably--been keeping a track (though have fallen off on updates) since the beginning and that is one I don't have listed. Yet. A review of the data. Dosing needs to be tailored far more often than it usually is.

in reply to FIAR Light

It's a common response from ex smokers--fair though. While nicotine certainly doesn't make cigarettes attractive to people who've never smoked, I dont know if the effect is any different on ex-smokers. Patches certainly aren't addictive in the sense of wanting more than you need to function. Gum can be mildly addictive in this sense.
Some people don't get addicted to patches at all. I can't tell if I'm addicted to them like I am to caffeine or if...

in reply to Lyndsay Barwell

@treehugger Eh--I'm not an AA junky. I did LOTS of drugs in my day and I don't fear it--I just learned to really despise tobacco. I suspect nicotine MAY be addictive but very often "addictive" is not as applicable when interventions are used therapeutically (e.g., opiates)....but something to look into. I'd say if the benefit outweighs the risk, addiction is a secondary issue that can be managed if the tx is no longer needed.
in reply to Lyndsay Barwell

@treehugger That's pretty much all we can do. I managed Hep C for decades with supps/herbs etc and could follow liver enzymes, viral load, histology. (Got genocidally-priced drugs that cured it some years ago.)

With LC? All we have is clinical symptoms and if you see that pattern of benefit, etc., I think you are using it wisely.
You can see my list--and yeah, sorry I think much is unavailable in the UK. ugh. fiar.us

in reply to FIAR Light

@LightFIAR interesting. I've bookmarked it as file won't open on my phone. I've also read an academic article about nicotine helping with side effects of HIV drugs. I am keen to put more effort into those types of things at some point as I've read about fasting and other supplements that help but at the moment a dissertation and jobs that have needed doing for ten years are priority.
in reply to Lyndsay Barwell

@treehugger Like any intervention, our "casual use" can be problematic as it may be salutary. Too much sun bad; blue light at night strains and hurts sleep. The good wavelengths may provide all sorts of benefits. In short--it's complicated but discernible what is helpful, innocuous or harmful. Real medicine would look at that complexity and address it; sure, one drug for a bug often works just fine. But often not.
in reply to FIAR Light

@LightFIAR
My understanding is that if a patient meets the ME/CFS diagnostic criteria then they have ME/CFS. The cause is not specified in diagnostic criteria.

Most cases of ME/CFS, but not all, are triggered by a viral infection. SARS‑CoV‑2 is just one possible virus. Flu (H1N1) and other viruses have also been found to trigger ME/CFS.

First, save large-scale thermonuclear warfare, there is very little chance for our species to go extinct (a mass death of 90%, which is apparently what awaits if temperature rises 8°C or more, isn't extinction; so we still need to care for the survivors, and even more to limit the rise of temperature to something lower).
Second, this blackmail story is made-up, lending agency to a stochastic parrot (and has been debunked).

Saturday afternoon, the settlers’ routine “walking tour” through the village escalated into an organized attack. Four #settlers began shoving young #Palestinians standing on the roofs of structures being dismantled. “[The settlers] were looking for a fight,” said Avishay Mohar, an activist and photographer who was on the scene.

The settlers and Palestinians began throwing stones at each other. Just when the confrontation seemed to have ended, the settlers called reinforcements: about 25 additional settlers — some masked, many armed with assault rifles and clubs — joined the attack on residents and international activists, who began fighting back.

One settler was struck in the head by a large stone, collapsed and lost consciousness. A Palestinian was also struck in the face by a rock. A second settler, reportedly a minor, seized the pistol from the vest of his passed-out friend and began firing into the air. “Another settler showed up with an M16 and started shooting at us,” Mohar recalled. As panic spread, residents ran frantically toward the neighboring village.
...By the next morning, not a single resident remained in Maghayer Al-Dir. All 23 families, totaling around 150 people, had been forced to flee.

Since October 2023, over 60 Palestinian shepherding communities in the West Bank have been displaced, with at least 14 new outposts built on or near their ruins. One violently expelled community — Wadi Al-Siq — faced abuse that included sexual assault, leading to the disbandment of the Israeli army’s “Desert Frontier” unit.

As +972 reported in August 2023, most of the communities in the territory between Ramallah and Jericho, an area of 150,000 dunams, were forced to flee during the previous months as settlers began rapidly constructing herding outposts and violently descending on residents, all with the backing of the Israeli army and state institutions. Now, only two Palestinian communities — M’arajat and Ras Al-Auja — remain in the entire southern Jordan Valley.

Over 50 Swiss diplomats are urging Bern to recognize Palestine and cut all ties with Tel Aviv’s military regime.

english.almayadeen.net/news/po…

The former diplomats also call for a halt to any Swiss financial investment linked to the Israeli military or intelligence sectors, emphasizing that #Switzerland must not be "financially or institutionally complicit in a military regime engaged in the mass killing and displacement of #Palestinians."

They further urge the Swiss government to ban the entry of individuals wanted by the International Criminal Court (#ICC), including Israeli occupation officials and Israeli settlers convicted of acts of violence. The letter specifically notes the ICC’s arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Security Minister Yoav Gallant as a legal basis for such measures.

In a shift from traditional Swiss policy, the former diplomats call for the immediate recognition of the State of #Palestine. They urge Bern to join the 148 #UN member states that have already taken this step, describing recognition as a moral and legal imperative amid what they identify as a deepening humanitarian catastrophe.

Arab states take part in Greek air drills alongside Israel
thecradle.co/articles/arab-sta…

The drill, hosted by Greece from 31 March to 11 April, includes joint air combat simulations and operational coordination.

“All types of air operations will be executed at an intense combat pace, both day and night, covering the full spectrum of modern air warfare through a series of complex and highly realistic scenarios,” Greece’s Hellenic Air Force said in a statement.

The Israeli Broadcasting Corporation's (KAN) military correspondent Itay Blumenthal said on 31 March that Tel Aviv was surprised to see the full list of participants published on the Hellenic Air Force's website, especially given its request to keep its involvement, and that of others like Qatar, confidential – in light of Doha's known political support for #Hamas and its involvement in the ongoing “Qatargate” scandal.

Blumenthal noted that “#Qatar and #Israel are now training together in #Greece.”

I currently have about a dozen papers under review. Now imagine: a drone hits my window — and who will keep emailing editors and reviewers then? 😅

Stewart Manley published his brilliant idea in #ResearchEvaluation the “exclusive option”. Authors could submit to multiple journals at once, and interested editors request an exclusive right to review.

No duplicated #peerreview. No endless delays. This could shake up academic publishing!

GNOME's History - Video tour through GNOME 1, 2 and 3

1 - What is GNOME ?
GNOME stood for GNU Network Modeling Environment at some point, which meant it was initially developed as a part of the GNU project. It was started by Miguel de Icaza in 1997, in reaction to the creation of the K Desktop Environment, which was, at the time, based on a non-free library.

2 - GNOME 1
The first version of GNOME was released in March of 1999. It sported a similar look to Windows and KDE? with a bottom panel, a task manager, and a main menu.
APPLICATIONS SHIPPING
GNOME 1.0 received 2 major updates in the next two years, namely GNOME 1.2, codenamed "Bongo", which focused on user experience, adding help and documentation, and new translations, and GNOME 1.4, "Tranquility, released in early 2001. 1.4 was a big release, introducing Nautilus, which managed the desktop, and served as the web browser and file manager.

3 - GNOME 2
GNOME 2 is still the longest running version of GNOME, with 2.0 releasing in June 2002. GNOME 2.0 revamped the whole desktop, basing itself on GTK 2, the next version of its base library. GNOME 2.0 introduced a lot of changes, adding font antialisasing, new icons and support for theming the stock icons, as well as streamlining the interface, removing some unused configuration options and making sure the interface was as accessible as possible. GNOME 2 introduced a dual panel setup, with the panel on top hosting the main menus and the system notifications, and the bottom one displaying the task manager as well as the virtual desktop switcher.

GNOME 2.0 was followed by 16 releases, one each month, lasting until GNOME 2.32, in september 2010. Notable highlights from these releases are the addition of a CD burner directly in Nautilus, replaced later by Brasero, a dedicated application, and a new spatial mode using one window per folder, the release of Epiphany, a GNOME web browser that still exists today and is the default on elementary OS, the creation of Evolution, a complete Outlook-like solution for email and calendar, the addition of a video player, Totem, and a document viewer, Evince.

GNOME 2 was the default on many distributions, most notably Ubuntu, during its whole cycle until XXXXX which switched to Unity, after the release of GNOME 3.

4 - GNOME 3
In April 2011, GNOME Shell 3.0 was released. Its goal was to unify the user experience, providing easier ways to start and maange applications and windows. Its first version was not that well received, some users indicating that "they forgot how stable and beautiful GNOME 2 was". GNOME 3 is still in use today, with version 3.30 being the current one at the time of this video's recording.
GNOME 3.0 redesigned the whole experience. Gone were the panels of old, and the task managers, replaced by an all in one overview of activities, grouping shortcuts, open applications, and virtual desktops in one place.
GNOME 3 came with a whole new theme called Adwaita, and most core GNOME applications were redesigned to better fit the new desktop metaphor.

Since these changes were not to the taste of everyone, some members of the community decided to fork the GNOME 2 codebase, and created MATE. Another group ran with GTK 3, but reimplemented the traditional desktop metaphor with GNOME shell extensions, eventually leading to the creation of Cinnamon.

GNOME 3 still pursued on with its new idea of how a desktop should operate, and received a lot of updates, going through 15 new releases, one every six months. Here are some highlights:
GNOME 3.2 brought synchronization with online accounts, as well as a contacts manager, and the support for web apps, which wre going strong in 2011.

GNOME 3.4, released in march 2012, put Documents, Epiphany, and Contacts through a redesign to better integrate with the rest of the desktop, and added Applications menus, smooth scrolling support, as well as a ton of improvements in the looks department.

GNOME 3.8 added an applications view, displaying the most frequently used programs, as well as the ability to see all applications. It also introduced a GNOME classic experience, for those that wanted to return to the GNOME 2 desktop layout.

GNOME 3.10, released in september 2013 added a bunch of new applications, most notably GNOME Maps, GNOME Notes, GNOME Music and GNOME Photos, bringing the GNOME software collection to a whole new level.

GNOME 3.24 added night light, a feature elementary OS Juno has added recently, to help reduce eye strain by reducing the amount of blue light emitted by the screen, and GNOME calendar got a week view.

GNOME 3.26 revamped the settings application with a navigation sidebar, and added firefox account sync to epiphany, its web browser.

Finally, the latest version, 3.30, was released in september 2018, and greatly improved desktop performance, using fewer system resources. With it also came auto updates for flatpaks, and a new Podcasts application, as well as a ton of other improvements.

The Problem with the Fediverse

I have no issues with the way it is implemented, I have no issues with it at all. For context, I left Twitter to join the Fedi, and it has been great so far! I use Misskey for microblogging, PeerTube for uploading videos, and Lemmy for Reddit-style discussions. The Fediverse is amazing!

Except, idk, for the fact that it is too fragmented? I hope I am using the right words. Like, the current instance I am on does not have support for communities, so i have to do it the hard way and mention @fediverse@lemmy.world so that I can post here. It's a good workaround, considering it doesn't have built-in support for communities.
But my point still stands. It's not a Lemmy/PieFed problem. It's mostly a fediverse problem. Implementing communities for every platform would help the Fediverse. Not only does it solve discoverability/algorithm issues of the Fediverse (since now when you follow a community, you get all posts from that community), but also it would interconnect every platform (Misskey, PeerTube, Mastodon, etc.)

Imagine you don't have to use your Lemmy account to check everything on Lemmy. Instead of creating channels in PeerTube, just post to an existing channel/community, and people subscribed to that channel/community can find you easily. I see this as an absolute win for everyone.

I understand this would require collaboration between all developers of all software. But hopefully, this is possible?
Or am I asking for too much?

If I am wrong, then is there any way in which we can solve this issue?

I think what will eventually happen is much like what happened to email, it too was very fragmented feeling early on but more and more adopted it and more servers kept developing and popping up and then at some point more service providers became more similar than alike and then it became what it is now.

The tricky part is that the concept and usefulness of a federated network mostly only grows in the long run and looks like its not going anywhere in the short term much like email and that is always what makes people question its efficacy.

Participation in any and all forms is what establishes it more and more.

For me and the clients and fwiends I talk to the issue with the fediverse for them is the decentralised nature. Most of them are NOT tech inclined and the suggestion that they would have to choose a server and that choice will influence the experience is a deal breaker - pure and simple. To follow up then if they do join, the sheer lack of numbers baffles them and they quit

its 2025, and people still dont know how to use email?! And they are using the internet?!!! Its clearly not the fediverse's fault...

My parents barely know how to use a computer, let alone use social media. And they STILL understand how email works! Our family grew up with email.

I am very much worried about the future of the tech world, if this continues...
Sorry to appear disrespectful to you, i truly understand what you're saying. But, i truly dont get people like them...
