Free certificates for IP addresses: security problem or solution? malwarebytes.com/blog/news/202…
Let's Encrypt has started rolling out certificates for IP addresses. Although it's a security solution it also offers cybercriminals opportunities.Pieter Arntz (Malwarebytes)
So “people would notice a link to mybank.com going to hahapwned.com but not to 89.72.4.2?”
People are more likely, not less, to smell something fishy if they see a random string of digits when they expect the name of a site they trust.
If this is the only argument against certificates for IP addresses, I think we’re good.
Aral Balkan reshared this.
Great point — and I agree that most users would be suspicious if they saw an IP address like 89.72.4.2 instead of a familiar domain like mybank.com. The concern raised in the article, though, was more about scenarios where users don’t see the link clearly — such as in emails, PDFs, or messaging apps where URLs may be masked behind anchor text or shortened links. For example, a phishing email might show a link that says “View Invoice” but actually points to https: //203.0.113.10/login.
Experienced users like you and I know to hover over links, check certificate info, or inspect the address bar. But many users don’t do that — or worse, they click links without verifying anything. According to the Verizon DBIR and other phishing studies, this is still one of the top attack vectors today.
Also, I don’t think the article was arguing against IP certs outright — just highlighting that, like with any new capability, there's potential for abuse that the broader public (and infosec community) should be aware of.

I intuitively understand AI psychosis to be a real phenomenon. We joke about NPC reddit midwits but what happens when you give them a relatively primitive LLM? They become delusional out of convenience.
I see it in my real life too. "Regular people" completely outsourcing their brains to a hallucinating chat bot. They believe it. They don't check it. They just think it's true. It's crazy. Midwits who just stuck to their lane out of intellectual helplessness will suddenly start doing crazy and dangerous things because ChatGPT told them how, but only enough to be dangerous.
Exactly. I know the world police have been exasperatingly annoying, but words are important here. The random next word guessing machine cannot lie or hallucinate, because it has no intent.
The biggest danger of LLMs isn't their output, it's peoples' trust. Like this moron who asked Grock, and less than 3 minutes of basic lookups (along with a court case I knew from actual previous research) showed the answer was entirely wrong: djsumdog.com/@djsumdog/posts/A…
Most of my friends do not know what the term "LLM" is. Some have gone to "AI courses" at their schools and don't understand the core mechanics that all these chatbots have in their models is just a massive lists of parts of words, with floating point values to ever other part of a word. That's it. Nothing else. No one is teaching the very basics of what the models are. They literally only get things "right" by accident and people keep asking "Grock is this true" no matter how many times it obviously generates random words that are verifiably untrue.

Here an important list of lesser known spices and seasonings. This list has been on my desk for months
1. Asafoetida - A pungent resin from South Asian cuisine, used sparingly in lentil dishes or curries. It mimics onion-garlic flavors and aids digestion.
2. Black Lime (Dried Lime) - Common in Middle Eastern cooking, it adds a tangy, fermented citrus note to stews, rice, or soups.

I have dozens, perhaps hundreds of FreeBSD systems - several of our products are based on platforms running Freebsd. Most are headless, but we've recently begun adding screens and using Xfce as the desktop (Xfce because most of our platforms have weak graphics engines.)
It is very stable - it is not suffering from the Linux problem of too many (code) cooks in the kitchen. But it does tend to run behind Linux in terms of support for the most recent changes in hardware.
That's exactly why I like FreeBSD, there's not an insane number of dependencies for a full featured system. And also why XFCE is my favorite... and I mod it with the good old CDE/Motif theme, because those were the days when the most thought was put into the user experience and productivity.
The modern desktops these days are astonishingly cringe and right out of Redmond😬
