When I was young, and naive, I thought that the end goal was to take "bloated" code (even if it were some binary generated by a ghastly [to me at the time, horrifically inefficient boiler plate code visible from a simple hex editor] C compiler) and hand optimize it, I don't think I was alone.
In more recent years, the XlogicX blog "Assembly is too high level" (e.g. xlogicx.net/Assembly_Is_Too_Hi…) gave me hope that perhaps some kept that goal alive!
The demo scene and "code golf" and "size coding" certainly still seem to care.
I attended the 20th anniversary of REcon last month and I am not sure if I met many birds of a feather who shared similar sentiments? At least one I think. That one was well worth the trip if nothing else.
Alas, it seems in 2025, there are far too few of us low level optimize minded sorts left, relative to all the slop being generated, "at scale".
The depressing reality is, SO MUCH good would come of simply re-writing egregiously inefficient interpreted language programs implemented in Python or Ruby or Perl etc. in something such as C, I don't even know where to begin.
Here's just one example, which took some janky Python OpenAI speech to text (which seemed to completely ignore prior art such as julius) that required GPUs and re-implemented it in not even the most elegant or most portable C, but still significantly better than the Python jank: github.com/ggml-org/whisper.cp…
Voila! No more GPUs required! Lamentably, still uses the training models that were probably created completely unethically (unlike the prior art of julius). But still, take the wins where you can get them?

I am old enough that 1MHz CPUs were still considered luxuries that I needed to access at labs, not something I had at home. I had been coding for years, before my parents eventually got what was an IMHO insanely overpriced and shitty microcomputer and worse: wasteful with its 7MHz 16bit CPU, running an obscenely bad OS that couldn't even task swap, let alone multi-task.
To quote someone from another blog comment about 1980s DSP designs: "One day I, as a fresh college grad, expressed my amazement at the mathematical processing power of those DSPs, which was impressive back in 1989. His response? 'That just means you can make 20 million mistakes per second.'"
Still, it used to be a prerequisite for some, to have considered the perils of MFLOPs levels of bugs, before they were granted much in the way of a system with an uplink capable of "srs" bandwidth (SGI workstations for example, had 10Gigabit interconnects, in the 1990s; while most home users with modems were still struggling to contend with a reliable 56K connection. My first college as an undergrad had a 56K uplink for their entire campus, and my personal modem could devour approximately one quarter of that bandwidth!).
By around 2013 I helped with a patch a bug in BIND (CVE-2013-4854) that was being actively exploited. It's estimated that there are around a billion DNS packets on the Internet, an hour.
I've known folks who have patched bugs in TCP/IP stacks, so I am not at their levels, yet. Maybe someday? Doesn't feel like it, but you never know. Bugs are friggin everywhere.
Regardless, improving the low hanging fruit where and whenever possible, is a win! Rust isn't my first choice, but there are way worse choices in 2025; unfortunately, some of those worse choices are much more popular.
It is with some chagrin that in recent years, most of my code "contributions" openly, have been to a system implemented in TCL; which is so much slower than even Python and Ruby and Perl (let's say, conservatively, those three languages are on average around 60x slower than C; TCL? On average: 200x slower! Meanwhile, in the 1980s I was already optimizing asm and machine code on systems with nanosecond level timing considerations; contrast that with golang's "halt the world" best in class garbage collector which was measured in milliseconds last I checked? Many don't even seem to pay attention to such orders of magnitude of inefficiencies intrinsic to their language choices! To me, that is unconscionable.). I seem to be at the opposite end of where I once was in some regards, yet the impact to potential users is not insignificant; which is why I keep contributing to such things despite the inefficient implementation choices.
I still think refactoring/rewriting/re-implementing in lower level more efficient languages would be a huge win in terms of efficiency, and worthwhile. But maybe some of that can be automated to a degree?
It's dumbfounding to me that in the 21st century there are still so many companies that rely on what I would consider "time sharing" paradigms and pay for compute and bandwidth in ways that would have been obscenely expensive to the point of having bankrupted some past employers if they were not smarter about self hosting hardware and IXPs and peering (instead of relying on things such as AWS as alluded to in that writing or GCP or Azure and other, as bad, yet popular, alternatives in a day and age where economical libre/free open source hardware with CPUs measured in GHz exist in plurality and RAM in ranges of 8GB or more are being sold for mere hundreds of dollars, if that.).
But I guess, because it is profitable and easy for some to rely on centralized systems, rather than cultivate their own in house expertise? Such avarice and inefficiencies will continue to persist until more wise up?
Similarly, I am guessing it was very strategic that Micro$oft hired Guido van Rossum. It's not that Python is good. However, from a sophomoric perspective, there are a lot of fools, writing a lot of Python and a mint is being made to the detriment of the planet and all living beings who are cursed to be alive right now on it, in the process.

مصاحبهٔ فرضی من با نوام چامسکی با استفاده از هوش مصنوعی دیپسیک
نوام چامسکی فیلسوف و زبانشناس آنارشیست یکی از بزرگترین منتقدان سیاستهای خارجی ایالات متحده است. چامسکی که اکنون بالای نود سال سن دارد یکی از مهمترین و صادقترین صداهای آزادیخواه در جهان است. چامسکی در رابطه با حکومت ایران نظراتی صریح و واقعگرایانه دارد و به عنوان یک یهودی نیز مخالف اسرائیل است. در متن پیش رو من به دیپسیک اعلام کردم که در نقش نوام چامسکی با من مصاحبه کند.

۱. سیاست خارجی آمریکا و ایران: یک رابطهٔ مبتنی بر زورگویی و مقاومت
ایران، مانند بسیاری از کشورهای مستقل در مناطق استراتژیک، هدف سیاستهای امپریالیستی آمریکا بوده است. از کودتای ۲۸ مرداد ۱۳۳۲ تا تحریمهای کشندهٔ امروز، واشنگتن همواره سعی کرده با فشار حداکثری، ایران را به اطاعت وادارد.
تحریمها جنایتاند: تحریمهای یکجانبهٔ آمریکا علیه ایران (مثلاً در حوزهٔ دارو و غذا) نقض حقوق بشر است و هزاران غیرنظامی بیگناه را کشته است. اینها نه «دیپلماسی»، بلکه ابزار جنگ اقتصادی هستند.
۲. حکومت ایران: نقد از درون
هرچند ایران در مقابل هژمونی آمریکا مقاومت کرده، اما دولت ایران نیز نقضکنندهٔ حقوق بشر است: سرکوب dissent (اعتراضات)، سانسور، و اعدامهای سیاسی قابل دفاع نیستند.
چامسکی بارها گفته که مقاومت در برابر امپریالیسم نباید بهانهای برای سرکوب داخلی شود.
۳. جنگ نیابتی و منطقهگرایی
ایران، مانند آمریکا و اسرائیل، در بازیِ جنگهای نیابتی (یمن، سوریه، لبنان) نقش دارد. این سیاستهای ویرانگر تنها رنج مردم عادی را افزایش میدهد.
۴. آیا راهحلی هست؟
گفتوگوی مستقیم و پایان تحریمها اولین قدم است.
جامعهٔ مدنی ایران (نه دولتها) باید محور تغییر باشد.
«اگر آمریکا واقعاً به دموکراسی در ایران علاقه داشت، ابتدا باید از حمایت از دیکتاتوریهایی مثل عربستان دست بردارد!»
در مورد نیروهای نیابتی ایران در منطقه توضیح بدهید. چطور این را توجیه میکنید؟ نیروهای نیابتی ایران در منطقه را نمیتوان خارج از چارچوب جنگهای نیابتیِ کلانترِ جهانی و رقابت ژئوپلیتیک فهمید. اما در عین حال، توجیه این اقدامات دشوار است، به ویژه وقتی که به هزینههای انسانی آن نگاه کنیم.
۱. چرا ایران از نیروهای نیابتی استفاده میکند؟
دفاع از منافع امنیتی: ایران خود را محاصرهشده توسط آمریکا و متحدانش (اسرائیل، عربستان) میبیند. بنابراین، از گروههایی مانند حزبالله لبنان، حشد الشعبی عراق، یا انصارالله یمن به عنوان ابزار بازدارندگی استفاده میکند.
- مثال: اگر ایران مستقیماً با اسرائیل بجنگد، خطر نابودی کامل وجود دارد. اما حزبالله به عنوان یک نیروی فشار غیرمستقیم عمل میکند.
رقابت با عربستان و آمریکا: ایران و عربستان در یک جنگ سرد منطقهای هستند. هر دو از گروههای نیابتی استفاده میکنند (مثلاً عربستان از جهادیهای سوری حمایت کرده است).
۲. آیا این قابل توجیه است؟ پاسخ چامسکیوار:
🔴 از دیدگاه حقوق بشری: خیر.
غیرنظامیان قربانی میشوند: جنگ نیابتی در یمن، سوریه، یا عراق باعث مرگ هزاران بیگناه شده است.
ایران هم مانند آمریکا مرتکب نقض حقوق بشر میشود: حمایت از گروههای شبهنظامی (حتی اگر علیه داعش بجنگند) میتواند به حاکمیت ملی کشورها آسیب بزند.
🟢 از دیدگاه واقعگرایی سیاسی: یک بازی بقا
چامسکی میگوید: «قدرتها از هر ابزاری برای حفظ نفوذ خود استفاده میکنند».
- آمریکا از گروههای کرد در سوریه حمایت میکند.
- اسرائیل از جبهه النصره (تروریستهای سابق) در سوریه حمایت کرده است.
پس ایران هم در این بازی شطرنج خونین شرکت میکند.
۳. آیا راهحلی وجود دارد؟
✅ پایان جنگ نیابتی نیازمند دو شرط است:
خروج آمریکا از مداخله در خاورمیانه (چامسکی بارها به این اشاره کرده که آمریکا بزرگترین تهدید برای صلح جهانی است).
تغییر رفتار ایران به سمت دیپلماسیِ غیرنظامی (اما تا زمانی که تهدید نظامی وجود دارد، بعید است این اتفاق بیفتد).
«وقتی ابرقدرتها بازی میکنند، مردم خاورمیانه مُهرههای شطرنج هستند. آیا کسی از مُهرهها میپرسد که آیا مایلند قربانی شوند؟»
سؤالپروفسور چامسکی، موضع شما دربارهٔ نیروهای نیابتی ایران در منطقه چیست؟ آیا این استراتژی قابل توجیه است؟
چامسکی:
«هیچ کشوری—از جمله ایران—حق ندارد با بازی جان مردم، امپراتوری بسازد. بله، آمریکا بزرگترین تروریست جهانی است. بله، واشنگتن از عربستان تا اسرائیل را مسلح میکند تا خاورمیانه را تجزیه کند. اما آیا این، دولت ایران را مجاز میکند که با حمایت از شبهنظامیان در یمن، سوریه یا لبنان، خود به نقض حاکمیت ملی و کشتار غیرنظامیان دست بزند؟ قطعاً نه.»
سؤال: پس راهحل شما چیست؟
چامسکی:
«۱. آمریکا باید تحریمها را لغو کند و خروج نظامی از منطقه را آغاز نماید—اینها جرقههای جنگ هستند.
۲. ایران باید از جنگ نیابتی دست بردارد—حزبالله و انصارالله ابزارهای امنیتی نیستند، بلکه بمبهای ساعتیاند که فقرا را منفجر میکنند.
۳. صلح واقعی نیازمند کنگرههای مردمی است، نه توافق ژنرالها. اگر مردم ایران و عربستان و یمن بتوانند دور از دخالت خارجی تصمیم بگیرند، این بازی خونین پایان مییابد.»
سؤال:اگر یک جمله به مخاطبان ایرانی بگویید؟
چامسکی:
«مقاومت در برابر امپریالیسم فضیلت است، اما وقتی به بهانهٔ آن، خود به جان مردم منطقه افتادید، دیگر شما هم بخشی از مشکلید.»
سؤال:پروفسور چامسکی، بحران فلسطین پس از ۷۵ سال به کجا رسیده؟ راه حل واقعبینانهٔ شما چیست؟
چامسکی:
«واقعبینانه؟ واقعیت این است که اسرائیل با حمایت بیقیدوشرط آمریکا، یک رژیم آپارتاید مدرن ساخته است. راه حل؟ اول باید دروغهای مسلط را کنار بگذاریم:
۱. "هیچ شریکی برای صلح وجود ندارد"؟ دروغ محض. اسناد افشاشده نشان میدهند که OLP بارها پیشنهادهای معقول داده، اما اسرائیل و آمریکا رد کردهاند.
۲. "اسرائیل حق دفاع از خود را دارد"؟ دفاع از چه؟ از سرزمینهای دزدیدهشده؟ از محاصرهٔ غزه که بزرگترین زندان باز جهان است؟
راه حل من (که هیچ قدرتی نمیخواهد بشنود):
✅ ۱. اجرای قطعنامههای بینالمللی (مثل ۲۴۲):
خروج کامل اسرائیل از کرانهٔ باختری و غزه.
پایان حکومت نظامی و توسعهٔ شهرکهای غیرقانونی.
✅ ۲. حق بازگشت آوارگان فلسطینی:
اگر یهودیان روسی که هیچ نسبتی با خاورمیانه ندارند میتوانند "به خانه بازگردند"، چرا فلسطینیهایی که کلید خانههای ۱۹۴۸شان را نگه داشتهاند، نمیتوانند؟
✅ ۳. دولت واحد دموکراتیک (آیا جسارت دارید؟):
یک نفر = یک رای از رودخانه تا دریا.
اگر یهودیان نگران امنیتند، چرا رژیمی ساختند که هر روز دشمنان جدید میسازد؟
.سؤال:اما اسرائیل هرگز به چنین چیزی رضایت نمیدهد—
چامسکی:
«آمریکا هم هرگز به الغای بردهداری رضایت نمیداد—تا زمانی که جنبشهای مردمی آن را اجبار کردند. مسئله "امکانپذیری" نیست، مسئله توازن قوا است. امروز BDS (تحریم اسرائیل) تنها ابزار مبارزهٔ مسالمتآمیز جهانی است... و به همین دلیل است که ۳۵ ایالت آمریکا قوانین ضد-BDS تصویب کردهاند! چون میترسند.»
.سؤال:پس شما رأی به نابودی اسرائیل میدهید—
چامسکی:
نه، "نابودی اسرائیل" هیچگاه راهحل من نبوده و نیست. این یک سوءتفاهم خطرناک از مواضع من است. آنچه من—و بسیاری از فعالان حقوق بشر—خواستار آن هستیم، نابودی سیاستهای آپارتاید و استعمارگری اسرائیل است، نه نابودی مردم یهودی به عنوان یک ملت.
تفاوت کلیدی:
نابودی یک رژیم نژادپرست ≠ نابودی یک مردم
- آیا الغای آپارتاید در آفریقای جنوبی به معنای "نابودی سفیدپوستان" بود؟ خیر. به معنای پایان حکومت نژادپرستانه بود.
- اسرائیل امروز یهودیسالارتر از آفریقای جنوبیِ سفیدسالار بود. آیا این قابل دفاع است؟
حق تعیین سرنوشت ≠ حق اشغالگری
- یهودیان نیز مانند همهی مردم حق دارند در امنیت زندگی کنند، اما نه به قیمت:
- پاکسازی قومی فلسطینیان در ۱۹۴۸ (النکبه)
- شهرکسازیهای غیرقانونی در کرانهٔ باختری
- تحتالحمایگی نظامی فلسطین
راهحل واقعی چیست؟
- الف) دولت واحد دموکراتیک (از رود تا دریا) با حقوق برابر برای همه (یهودی، مسیحی، مسلمان، بیدین).
- ب) اگر دو دولت، باید واقعی باشد:
- فلسطین مستقل با مرزهای ۱۹۶۷ و قدس شرقی به عنوان پایتخت.
- حق بازگشت آوارگان بر اساس قطعنامهی ۱۹۴.
- هیچکدام از اینها به معنای "پرتاب یهودیان به دریا" نیست.
سؤال:در مورد روابط ایران با اسرائیل چه نظری دارید؟ حکومت ایران سالهاست که آرزوی نابودی اسرائیل را دارد. رویهای که در حکومت پیشین ایران به نظر مناسبتر بود تا رویهٔ جمهوری اسلامی. چرا ایران با اسرائیل دشمنی میکند؟
چامسکی:
۱. ریشههای دشمنی ایران و اسرائیل:
انقلاب ۵۷ و گفتمان ایدئولوژیک: جمهوری اسلامی اسرائیل را "غدهٔ سرطانی صهیونیستی" معرفی کرد—نه به دلایل صرفاً مذهبی، بلکه به عنوان نماد امپریالیسم غرب در خاورمیانه. این گفتمان، تقابل با اسرائیل را به بخشی از هویت سیاسی نظام تبدیل کرد.
رقابت منطقهای: اسرائیل و ایران پیش از انقلاب متحد استراتژیک بودند (رژیم شاه اسرائیل را به رسمیت شناخت و همکاری امنیتی داشت). اما پس از انقلاب، ایران خود را رهبر مقاومت ضدصهیونیستی معرفی کرد تا در رقابت با عربستان و آمریکا نفوذ منطقهای کسب کند.
۲. آیا این دشمنی توجیه دارد؟
از دید واقعگرایانه: ایران از حزبالله و حماس به عنوان ابزار فشار علیه اسرائیل استفاده میکند تا:
- از تهدید نظامی مستقیم بکاهد (اسرائیل بمبافکنهای اتمی دارد، ایران ندارد).
- در بحرانهایی مانند جنگ سوریه، موازنهٔ قوا ایجاد کند.
از دید اخلاقی:
- شعار "نابودی اسرائیل" نهتنها غیرعملی است، بلکه بهانهای به دست صهیونیستها میدهد تا سرکوب فلسطینیان را تشدید کنند.
- سیاستهای نژادپرستانهٔ اسرائیل باید محکوم شود، اما تهدید وجودی یک ملت (هرچند اشغالگر) قابل دفاع نیست.
۳. چرا ایران به روابط پیش از انقلاب بازنمیگردد؟
امتناع ایدئولوژیک: نظام جمهوری اسلامی مشروعیت خود را تا حدی به ضدیت با اسرائیل گره زده است.
رقابت با عربستان: عادیسازی روابط با اسرائیل به معنای باخت ژئوپلیتیک در مقابل عربستان (که اخیراً با اسرائیل متحد شده) است.
۴. راهحل چیست؟
ایران باید:
- شعارهای تخریبگرایانه را کنار بگذارد و بر حقوق فلسطینیان متمرکز شود (نه نابودی اسرائیل).
- از دیپلماسی غیرنظامی برای فشار به اسرائیل استفاده کند (مثل حمایت از دادگاههای بینالمللی).
اسرائیل باید:
- آپارتاید را پایان دهد و به قطعنامههای سازمان ملل پایبند باشد.
"ایران امروز با شعارهای افراطیاش، نهتنها به فلسطینیان کمکی نکرده، بلکه بهانهای به دست نتانیاهو داده است تا خشونتها را تشدید کند. مقاومت در برابر اشغالگری مشروع است، اما باید عاقلانه و اخلاقی باشد."
سؤالآیا صلح ممکن است؟ آیا هنوز امیدی هست؟
چامسکی:
صلح ممکن است، اما نه تحت شرایط کنونی.

اسرائیل با بمبهای اتمی و حمایت بیقیدوشرط آمریکا هرگز از موضع قدرت کنار نمیآید—مگر تحت فشار بینالمللی بیسابقه (مثل تحریمهای آفریقای جنوبی علیه آپارتاید).
ایران و گروههای مقاومت نیز با ادامهی جنگ نیابتی تنها به چرخهی خشونت دامن میزنند.
۲. توهم دوم: "طرفین خواهان صلح هستند"
رهبران اسرائیل حتی حاضر نیستند دولت فلسطینی واقعی را به رسمیت بشناسند (نتانیاهو بارها گفت: "هرگز یک کشور فلسطینی به وجود نخواهد آمد").
رهبران ایران نیز صلح را "تسلیمطلبی" میدانند و از گفتمان مقاومت برای توجیه سرکوب داخلی استفاده میکنند.
۳. توهم سوم: "آمریکا میتواند واسهٔ صلح باشد"
آمریکا حامی مالی و نظامی اشغال فلسطین است. هر "طرح صلح" واشنگتن (مثل معاملهی قرن) در واقع نقشهی annexation (الحاق) بیشتر بوده است.
پس امید کجاست؟
✅ در جنبشهای مردمی فرامرزی:
یهودیان ضدصهیونیست (مثل Jewish Voice for Peace) و فلسطینیهایی که مبارزهٔ مسالمتآمیز را انتخاب کردهاند.
فشار BDS (تحریم، عدم سرمایهگذاری، مجازات)—تنها سلاحی که اسرائیل را مجبور به تغییر کرده است.
✅ در تغییر توازن قوا:
افول نسبی نفوذ آمریکا در خاورمیانه و رشد قدرتهای جدید (چین؟) که شاید انگیزهای برای دیپلماسی واقعی ایجاد کند.
✅ در آلترناتیوهای عملی:
کنفدراسیون اسرائیل-فلسطین با حقوق برابر (پروژهای که حتی برخی روشنفکران اسرائیلی از آن حمایت میکنند).
جملهٔ پایانی:
"صلح محال نیست، اما نیازمند شجاعتی است که سیاستمداران امروز ندارند—شجاعتِ به رسمیت شناختن ظلمی که خود مرتکب شدهاند. تاریخ نشان داده تغییر تنها زمانی میآید که مردم، قدرتها را مجبور کنند."

Admittedly, while I am not a Tor developer, I have known Tor devs in plurality. I have co-habitated and worked with some of them elsewhere. Roger Dingledine crashed on my couch once upon a time, back when I had couches to offer as crash space to others; instead of years of homelessness as in more recent years (decade+?).
It's true that an egregious amount of traffic is web based though; so the Tor Browser Bundle is probably how a lot of folks ever use and/or encounter Tor in practice. Kind of orthogonal to the rest of your discourse.
Having written as much, I think even Roger would be the first to admit that Tor isn't a panacea. It attempts to provide a layer of anonymity predominantly at the IP (v4) layer. There are many other potential pitfalls, even for Tor users.
Giving a shit about which country (or more broadly; I would be concerned about NGOs) might be storing your data is probably still wise? It never sat well with me that Facebook would flag OTR traffic over XMPP as "encrypted message" in their WebUI. To me that screamed: "we are logging your data for future attacks."
As if (m)any users ever used OTR over Facebook's XMPP implementation in the first place! sigh
Which is a long winded way of saying: If Facebook/Meta Messenger claims to use the same Axolotl/Double Ratchet Algorithm utilized by Signal (and WhatsApp) and they have already previously demonstrated that they are actively logging ciphertext for potential future offline attacks, they seem to be showing everyone who should know better, that they are to be considered hostile, regardless of what nation state identity they may claim and whether the traffic hitting Facebook/Meta's servers from its ciphertext users ever leaves a nation state level border? It's totally inconsequential as a result. They should be treated as a Mallory.
Everything about Signal rubs me (and many others in the know; though I had a positively enlightening conversation over dinner with someone I met at REcon last month in Montreal who has, for reasons that remain mostly mysterious to me though grokked by someone else at the dinner table, unofficially and repeatedly backported various Signal versions to run on Windows 7 and dug into it more deeply and recently than I would ever care to [e.g. exfiltrated.com/download/signa… ]) the wrong way, and I was cajoled into running Signal when it was still called TextSecure and RedPhone.
I'd love to see you explore something such as SILC (which attempted to defend against malicious server operators, a threat model which is real and still denied by most/all end-to-end encrypted comms systems entirely) or better yet, PSYC2.
I have only encountered one detractor of SILC, who while not particularly outspoken (quite the opposite) was a former coworker of mine with some skills. Unfortunately, that individual has been less than communicative with me after I emailed about a laptop that was gifted to me by that same individual, having had a (U)EFI backdoor that took me considerable time and effort and expense to identify and remediate; just to give you an idea of the level of threats with which I have already contended by those professing to be allies.
I am a terrible judge of character, and much to my own detriment, have given folks the benefit of the doubt, even given past transgressions, since I acknowledge humans make mistakes, and we can learn from such situations! However, some things (at a level below most OSes at a minimum) seem to speak for themselves.
Oh yeah, updating because I meant to mention the deeply dystopian copaganda perspective (perhaps Devil's advocate) of assigning detention time based upon cryptographic key length as posited by Poul-Henning Kamp here: dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3703126 (direct link to 308KB PDF here: dl.acm.org/doi/pdf/10.1145/370…). Far be it from me to think highly of the "law" given that I was incarnated in a country which seems to have a so-called "justice" system which seems to be predominantly preoccupied with perpetuating carceral slavery in the 21st century, going so far as to apparently have over 90% of its inmates having never even had a jury trial (so much for "due process"!) but there are a lot of individuals with power and riches who likes things as they are, and would probably love a more punitive system as PHK seems to be advocating when it comes to encrypted comms systems. Just as there are, quite obviously from the headlines, governments (e.g. the UK) which are bullying private enterprises (e.g. Apple) into cryptographic backdoors (that will never end well yet they're doing it anyway!).
Having written as much, I think it's rather telling that while PHK pioneered the horridly named "jails" subsystem within FreeBSD, that Apple rather presciently (or more likely, because jkh [Jordan Hubbard], FreeBSD co-founder and also previously "Director of Engineering of Unix Technologies" at Apple for over a dozen years, leaving in 2013 sometime after Steve Jobs passed away [Jordan was CTO at iXSystems while I consulted for them around the same time]) decided not to integrate jails into OS X. Containers may be useful to some degree (Apple certainly eventually implemented their own Hypervisor Framework as an example in related realms), but words matter and PHK seems to have what is, from my vantage, and unhealthy obsession with "rule of law" nomenclature both in FreeBSD's jails subsystem, as well as that ACM writing to which I linked. I've never visited Denmark, maybe every cop and judge is honest there, but here in the USA, ACAB and judges are more likely to be "on the take" than benevolent and unfortunately that must be taken into account with threat modeling as well.

When I was young, and naive, I thought that the end goal was to take "bloated" code (even if it were some binary generated by a ghastly [to me at the time, horrifically inefficient boiler plate code visible from a simple hex editor] C compiler) and hand optimize it, I don't think I was alone.
In more recent years, the XlogicX blog "Assembly is too high level" (e.g. xlogicx.net/Assembly_Is_Too_Hi…) gave me hope that perhaps some kept that goal alive!
The demo scene and "code golf" and "size coding" certainly still seem to care.
I attended the 20th anniversary of REcon last month and I am not sure if I met many birds of a feather who shared similar sentiments? At least one I think. That one was well worth the trip if nothing else.
Alas, it seems in 2025, there are far too few of us low level optimize minded sorts left, relative to all the slop being generated, "at scale".
The depressing reality is, SO MUCH good would come of simply re-writing egregiously inefficient interpreted language programs implemented in Python or Ruby or Perl etc. in something such as C, I don't even know where to begin.

Voila! No more GPUs required! Lamentably, still uses the training models that were probably created completely unethically (unlike the prior art of julius). But still, take the wins where you can get them?

I am old enough that 1MHz CPUs were still considered luxuries that I needed to access at labs, not something I had at home. I had been coding for years, before my parents eventually got what was an IMHO insanely overpriced and shitty microcomputer and worse: wasteful with its 7MHz 16bit CPU, running an obscenely bad OS that couldn't even task swap, let alone multi-task.
To quote someone from another blog comment about 1980s DSP designs: "One day I, as a fresh college grad, expressed my amazement at the mathematical processing power of those DSPs, which was impressive back in 1989. His response? 'That just means you can make 20 million mistakes per second.'"
Still, it used to be a prerequisite for some, to have considered the perils of MFLOPs levels of bugs, before they were granted much in the way of a system with an uplink capable of "srs" bandwidth (SGI workstations for example, had 10Gigabit interconnects, in the 1990s; while most home users with modems were still struggling to contend with a reliable 56K connection. My first college as an undergrad had a 56K uplink for their entire campus, and my personal modem could devour approximately one quarter of that bandwidth!).
By around 2013 I helped with a patch a bug in BIND (CVE-2013-4854) that was being actively exploited. It's estimated that there are around a billion DNS packets on the Internet, an hour.
I've known folks who have patched bugs in TCP/IP stacks, so I am not at their levels, yet. Maybe someday? Doesn't feel like it, but you never know. Bugs are friggin everywhere.
Regardless, improving the low hanging fruit where and whenever possible, is a win! Rust isn't my first choice, but there are way worse choices in 2025; unfortunately, some of those worse choices are much more popular.
It is with some chagrin that in recent years, most of my code "contributions" openly, have been to a system implemented in TCL; which is so much slower than even Python and Ruby and Perl (let's say, conservatively, those three languages are on average around 60x slower than C; TCL? On average: 200x slower! Meanwhile, in the 1980s I was already optimizing asm and machine code on systems with nanosecond level timing considerations; contrast that with golang's "halt the world" best in class garbage collector which was measured in milliseconds last I checked? Many don't even seem to pay attention to such orders of magnitude of inefficiencies intrinsic to their language choices! To me, that is unconscionable.). I seem to be at the opposite end of where I once was in some regards, yet the impact to potential users is not insignificant; which is why I keep contributing to such things despite the inefficient implementation choices.
I still think refactoring/rewriting/re-implementing in lower level more efficient languages would be a huge win in terms of efficiency, and worthwhile. But maybe some of that can be automated to a degree?
It's dumbfounding to me that in the 21st century there are still so many companies that rely on what I would consider "time sharing" paradigms and pay for compute and bandwidth in ways that would have been obscenely expensive to the point of having bankrupted some past employers if they were not smarter about self hosting hardware and IXPs and peering (instead of relying on things such as AWS as alluded to in that writing or GCP or Azure and other, as bad, yet popular, alternatives in a day and age where economical libre/free open source hardware with CPUs measured in GHz exist in plurality and RAM in ranges of 8GB or more are being sold for mere hundreds of dollars, if that.).
But I guess, because it is profitable and easy for some to rely on centralized systems, rather than cultivate their own in house expertise? Such avarice and inefficiencies will continue to persist until more wise up?
Similarly, I am guessing it was very strategic that Micro$oft hired Guido van Rossum. It's not that Python is good. However, from a sophomoric perspective, there are a lot of fools, writing a lot of Python and a mint is being made to the detriment of the planet and all living beings who are cursed to be alive right now on it, in the process.
