Global North dumps its e-waste in Global South. It's donations for school children, they say.

We're such a cute society but we're having too much fun to stop.

Children living near e-waste sites exhibited significantly elevated urinary exposure to LCMs.

LCMs with lower hydrophobicity and molecular weight were preferentially excreted in urine.

Estimated daily urinary excretion of fluorinated biphenyl LCMs was 45% higher in exposed children than in reference children.

Efficiency is greatest form of waste

"Jon Ippolito, professor of new media at the University of Maine, said tech companies are constantly working to make chips and data centers more efficient, but that does not mean AI’s environmental impact will shrink. That’s because of a problem called the Jevons Paradox. “The cheaper resources get, the more we tend to use them,” he said. When cars replaced horses, he said, commute times didn’t shrink. We just traveled farther."

True. It is a key failure that we can invent our way out of the problems we invented our way into. And that highly complex systems respond to super-simplistic technical solutions. We're going to solve CO2 with all this new tech. Not alone do we not solve CO2, we create a whole range of other problems.

We can keep on growing, keep on enjoying our conveniences, just change the energy source. The Growth Death Cult has all the easy answers.

imo it is exemplary annoying behaviour to campaign for the fediverse software aimed at people who like shorter and lighter posts with less formatting to start displaying longer and heavier posts with more complex formatting in a way that better mimics what those posts look like on fediverse software aimed at people who like longer and heavier posts with more complex formatting

just that sentence was exhausting and it didn't even have punctuation, much less any formatting

different people have different needs

software diversity is a strength

don't be exhausting

Although a lot of things in our culture have degraded over the last couple generations: our education levels, our attention spans, our identification with adulthood — and all of these have very systemic reasons — one thing that people commonly say has gotten worse as well is language. But it hasn't, really.

Language can't really be good or bad. Language is expressive, it exists to communicate in the current circumstances. So while the language is certainly used to express modern things that we see as objectively bad — with terms like "toxic" and "brainrot" and "adulting" being common parlance now — it isn't the language itself that's the problem.

in reply to Comrade Ferret

In fact, people have been complaining for generations that language has become dumbed down. And if you think that it's true, that language has only gotten stupider over the last couple hundred years, I would like to introduce you to rhyming slang:

The occupation has begun to completely erase our neighborhood. Shells are falling nonstop, and their tanks are approaching my home. We are in desperate need to move immediately to southern Gaza to save our lives. I know I’m asking for help repeatedly and feel like a burden, and I sincerely apologize, but we have no choice but to ask for assistance.

There is always a cost to convenience and those who profit most are rarely the ones who pay.

In the USA, "the AI boom is fueling a frenzy of data centers that are competing with residential homes for capital, power, water, and even sonic space. The result is a housing market stuck in neutral, with the potential for higher bills on the horizon, and neighborhoods kept awake by the hum of chillers designed to keep machines-not people-cool."
