1/ Thanks to @cwebber for helping me understand the differences between the "decentralized" approach of #Bluesky and the "distributed" approach of the #Fediverse .
As it happens, I see some parallels between this and my own field - the German power and utility sector.
2/ The German power grid (and most other national grids which make stability a priority) must adhere to the so-called "N-1 redundancy". Which is to say that if _any_ single node in your power or utility grid fails, the rest of the nodes must still be able to maintain the grid.
3/ This requirement must still be fulfilled if any single node is down due to maintenance - after all, accidents can and do happen, and you don't want cascading blackouts.
And this same requirement is also important for other networks, including the Internet - and social media.

Im very excited, somebodybwe know has offered to stay at our house and take care of our animals while we are away, for only 100 bucks a day. Thats only 10 bucks per day per animal.
Second day and I fell over while cross-country skiing and now my wrist hurts a bit. This is not good. Using lots of diclofenac. Random: I have hurt my wrists A LOT from growing up skateboarding and snowboarding. Taping them up has always helped. Like just a small layer of sports tape lightly wrapped, but leave it on.
It's weird it might even be a mental thing. Like if there is tape on it you know to be careful with it.

And perhaps, who knows, gives us some courage to have more open discussions that we really do need alternatives and should talk about them, whether eco-socialism, eco-communism, or something else in entirely.
annoyingly a rhetorical question. But yes I have seen capitalist apologists here on Mastodon, in replies to other people posts rather than directly in my timeline.
And the there is the question of what we mean by capitalism and whether it can be tamed, but short of worldwide revolution I can't see how we can all survive how its profit driven promotion of growth and it's suborning of the democratic process bringing about economic and environmental collapse.
Given the position we're in climate-wise, I don't think there's much option. It's very hard to say "you need to do things in a new way" *and* change the incentive structure simultaneously. I would like to be wrong.
Do I believe in capitalism? Yes, like gravity and the tooth fairy it exists. Unlike the tooth fairy it doesn't wait for profit and if capitalism was the tooth fairy we'd all be gummy and wouldn't even have a sixpence. Do I support capitalism...? Oh my no.
When in the hands of freelancers and small businesses and cooperatives, yes. People should be able to sell their products and services directly and not have to work for a giant corporation.
But I don't believe in crony capitalism, where the government and business collude against the people, which is what we have now. And I don't believe in corporatism, where the corporations have most or all the power.
I don't believe in capitalism in the same way that I don't believe in for example Pietistic Lutheranism. Capitalism is a religion, at the moment still relatively hegemonic. I know it exists. I am influenced by its culture (like I'm influenced by Pietism, growing up in a culture where that tendency has flourished). I have to follow the religious rituals, like paying "money" at the "store" when getting food or going to "work" to earn a "living". Do I believe in it? No.
more seriously: not everything can or should be organised by the government. But _unrestrained_ capitalism is rarely the best thing for it's customers.

 It’s not one or the other - all countries have a bit of each. The USA has socialised roads and education. Communist countries have independent taxi drivers and shopkeepers.

The poll was not serious! I mean, i meant the question, but not serious, methodologically, as a poll. No poll on here ever is. In that spirit, I thought it would be funny to do a just “yes” and “no” poll. (And i liked how it cuts out all the crap).

3. People who believe in regulated capitalism, as in Scandinavia. Yes, of course, that is nice. I used to believe in this too, I guess. But now, in 2024? When “regulated capitalism”, if it ever existed, is dismantled everywhere? Where we have the most rampant kind - because that’s what it is - eating and destroying everything and everyone? I do like Nancy Fraser’s #CannibalCapitalism.
Was slightly surprised that people still cling onto idea that regulation is possible.
4. Lastly, people objecting to the “still”, as they never believed in it. Good point. I guess i meant it more collectively, whether as a society believe in it, and in that sense the “still” made sense for me. But also didn’t think it through too much.

And yes. One alternative is communism. Which i would love to revisit personally. The soviet 1930s version failed - it doesn’t mean that a new 2030s version will! (I loved the passage in Ministry for the Future on this).
But also, there are so many other possibilities. We have had 100,000 years of humans with all sorts of ways of sorting out livelihoods in groups- and we can find new ones! 😊

China has a sort of regulated capitalism - it's certainly not communist and it's on its way to ruling the world. But it's a sorcerer's apprentice and what happens as it bumps up against physical limits will be challenging. What we've lost in the West (aka the Golden Billion - maybe a sixth of the world) is any sort of democratic say in where we're going. The Market must decide and it will always choose what suits the richest and most powerful in the shortest term.

Important reminder, if you own a domain name and don't use it for sending email.
There is nothing to stop scammers from sending email claiming to be coming from your domain. And the older it gets, the more valuable it is for spoofing. It could eventually damage your domain's reputation and maybe get it blacklisted, unless you take the steps to notify email servers that any email received claiming to come from your domain should be trashed.
Just add these two TXT records to the DNS for your domain: TXT v=spf1 -all TXT v=DMARC1; p=reject;
The first says there is not a single SMTP server on earth authorized to send email on behalf of your domain. The second says that any email that says otherwise should be trashed.
If you do use your domain for sending email, be sure to add 3 records: SPF record to indicate which SMTP server(s) are allowed to send your email. DKIM records to add a digital signature to emails, allowing the receiving server to verify the sender and ensure message integrity. DMARC record that tells the receiving email server how to handle email that fails either check.
You cannot stop scammers from sending email claiming to be from your domain, any more than you can prevent people from using your home address as a return address on a mailed letter. But, you can protect both your domain and intended scam victims by adding appropriate DNS records.
UPDATE: The spf and the dmarc records need to be appropriately named. The spf record should be named "@", and the dmarc record name should be "_dmarc".
Here's what I have for one domain.
One difference that I have is that I'm requesting that email providers email me a weekly aggregated report when they encounter a spoof. gmail and Microsoft send them, but most providers won't, but since most email goes to Gmail, it's enlightening when they come.

Rich people seem worse than they've been in decades. They were never great but for Christ's sake, they've lost all sense of fake propriety. That's my biggest complaint.
@apophis Rich people are WAY RICHER than they were a few decades ago, in comparative terms. A smaller number of them control a much larger portion of the total economic product, and have tremendous power, and being in this position seems to be absolutely toxic to the human brain.
The situation is more like the late 19th century, the Gilded Age. And the rich people of that time were buck wild.
It's absolutely staggering how the richest people in the world have jumped from single digit billions to hundreds of billions in just the last 20 years or so. Meanwhile median wealth in the US has stayed the same or decreased as most Americans are living in debt and paycheck to paycheck.
