A former OpenAI researcher known for bringing the artificial intelligence company, which is facing a barrage of lawsuits over its business model, to the public has died, authorities confirmed this week.

Suchir Balaji, 26, was found dead in his Buchanan Street apartment on Nov. 26, according to San Francisco police and the chief medical examiner's office. Police had been called to the Lower Haight apartment around 1 p.m. that day after receiving a call asking officers to check on his welfare, a police spokesman said.

The medical examiner ruled the cause of death a suicide, and police said this week there was "no evidence of foul play at this time."

The information he had was expected to play a key role in the cases against the San Francisco-based company.

Balaji's death comes three months after he publicly accused OpenAI of violating American copyright law in developing ChatGPT, a generative artificial intelligence program that has become a blockbuster and is used by hundreds of millions of people around the world.

Hi, I'm looking for a job. I have not been fired, or laid off, I was investing personal time in trying a few different things. Personal time is now running thin.

I have been professionally a computer programmer for 19 years. I was mainly a web developer (“full stack”) during the first 14 years, but now have gone to simpler fields. I am now what I would call a distribution integrator, and UX-focused developer spanning from the platform firmware up to the user-facing interface. (See: NixOS involvement, Mobile NixOS, Tow-Boot, etc.)

I am looking for remote work, and live on the Eastern Time Zone in North America. I am flexible about working hours if needed. I am bilingual (French and English).

A good fit for me will have me working and contributing back on Open Source Software as a significant component.

 It’s not one or the other - all countries have a bit of each.
The USA has socialised roads and education. Communist countries have independent taxi drivers and shopkeepers.

Ah! The poll has ended! I can report that only 11% of participants (1403 in total) still believe in #capitalism. Which perhaps does say something about the current mood here on Mastodon. And perhaps, who knows, gives us some courage to have more open discussions that we really do need alternatives and should talk about them, whether eco-socialism, eco-communism, or something else in entirely.

Since my daugher can't work, due to her injury, she didn't have money to buy Christmas presents. And since she's also going stir crazy, I enlisted her to do my shopping and pick all the presents in exchange for providing the funds for her to buy the presents that she wants to buy. This worked out great. She had fun shopping and was able to get her gifts, and it made it the best christmas ever for me. I also swore her to secrecy, dont want wife to know i didn't shop for her stuff.

While it's well deserved that #MichaelGambon won a #BAFTA Best Actor award for his portrayal of #JohnHarrison in #Longitude, it's a crying shame that #JeremyIrons didn't win an award as well for his portrayal of #RupertGould in that same film.

Jeremy Irons' acting here is fucking making me cry and emotional with his portrayal of having yet another nervous breakdown at the start of World War 2.

Fucking hell this is an amazing film.

Important reminder, if you own a domain name and don't use it for sending email.

There is nothing to stop scammers from sending email claiming to be coming from your domain. And the older it gets, the more valuable it is for spoofing. It could eventually damage your domain's reputation and maybe get it blacklisted, unless you take the steps to notify email servers that any email received claiming to come from your domain should be trashed.

Just add these two TXT records to the DNS for your domain:
TXT v=spf1 -all
TXT v=DMARC1; p=reject;

The first says there is not a single SMTP server on earth authorized to send email on behalf of your domain. The second says that any email that says otherwise should be trashed.

If you do use your domain for sending email, be sure to add 3 records:
SPF record to indicate which SMTP server(s) are allowed to send your email.
DKIM records to add a digital signature to emails, allowing the receiving server to verify the sender and ensure message integrity.
DMARC record that tells the receiving email server how to handle email that fails either check.

You cannot stop scammers from sending email claiming to be from your domain, any more than you can prevent people from using your home address as a return address on a mailed letter. But, you can protect both your domain and intended scam victims by adding appropriate DNS records.

UPDATE: The spf and the dmarc records need to be appropriately named. The spf record should be named "@", and the dmarc record name should be "_dmarc".

Here's what I have for one domain.

One difference that I have is that I'm requesting that email providers email me a weekly aggregated report when they encounter a spoof. gmail and Microsoft send them, but most providers won't, but since most email goes to Gmail, it's enlightening when they come.

@apophis Rich people are WAY RICHER than they were a few decades ago, in comparative terms. A smaller number of them control a much larger portion of the total economic product, and have tremendous power, and being in this position seems to be absolutely toxic to the human brain.

yep. i didnt think i'd be still needing to help other people get it, 20 years on...

by some of it's many avenues of harm, it's a catalytic mutagenic carcinogen,

  • carcinogen, causes cancer.
  • mutagen, messes up your flesh morphology and your dna, preventing healing, as a means of causing cancer
  • catalytic, it helps other carcinogens and mutagens be carcinogenic and mutagenic, and remains unchanged, to persist to do that again when more carcinogens and mutagens come by,

meaning as your corpse gets eaten, the glyphosate continues to be a catalytic mutagenic carcinogen in the bodies of the things that ate your corpse, and in turn the things that eat them, and on and on through all nature... and the corporations are still accelerating the amount of glyphosate they produce (albeit, in 2024, bayer (who bought monsanto, and therefor bought glyphosate) have muttered something about taking it off the domestic market, due to something about bad press from people dying from cancer and stuff like that...), with big industry continuing to find new ways to not just increase how much is produced and set loose in the world, but to accelerate how much, by finding novel new uses, like as a drying agent on grains, or used in chemical ice nucleation in stratospheric aerosolisation type cloud seeding.
