A former OpenAI researcher known for bringing the artificial intelligence company, which is facing a barrage of lawsuits over its business model, to the public has died, authorities confirmed this week.
Suchir Balaji, 26, was found dead in his Buchanan Street apartment on Nov. 26, according to San Francisco police and the chief medical examiner's office. Police had been called to the Lower Haight apartment around 1 p.m. that day after receiving a call asking officers to check on his welfare, a police spokesman said.
The medical examiner ruled the cause of death a suicide, and police said this week there was "no evidence of foul play at this time."
The information he had was expected to play a key role in the cases against the San Francisco-based company.
Balaji's death comes three months after he publicly accused OpenAI of violating American copyright law in developing ChatGPT, a generative artificial intelligence program that has become a blockbuster and is used by hundreds of millions of people around the world.

Hi, I'm looking for a job. I have not been fired, or laid off, I was investing personal time in trying a few different things. Personal time is now running thin.
I have been professionally a computer programmer for 19 years. I was mainly a web developer (“full stack”) during the first 14 years, but now have gone to simpler fields. I am now what I would call a distribution integrator, and UX-focused developer spanning from the platform firmware up to the user-facing interface. (See: NixOS involvement, Mobile NixOS, Tow-Boot, etc.)
I am looking for remote work, and live on the Eastern Time Zone in North America. I am flexible about working hours if needed. I am bilingual (French and English).
A good fit for me will have me working and contributing back on Open Source Software as a significant component.

@captainrob @azphilosopher but what you can have is a capitalist economy with socialist welfare policies and that is what Scandinavia has. Very prosperous profitable companies and very wealthy people who pay into a comprehensive wealth system. It is both capitalism and socialism.
 It’s not one or the other - all countries have a bit of each.
The USA has socialised roads and education. Communist countries have independent taxi drivers and shopkeepers.
Ah! The poll has ended! I can report that only 11% of participants (1403 in total) still believe in #capitalism. Which perhaps does say something about the current mood here on Mastodon. And perhaps, who knows, gives us some courage to have more open discussions that we really do need alternatives and should talk about them, whether eco-socialism, eco-communism, or something else in entirely.

While it's well deserved that #MichaelGambon won a #BAFTA Best Actor award for his portrayal of #JohnHarrison in #Longitude, it's a crying shame that #JeremyIrons didn't win an award as well for his portrayal of #RupertGould in that same film.

-Got the book from the uni library.
-Made actual hand written notes that will not disappear.
Took about 5 hours, but now they are done, make sense to me and are forever MINE.
