Oh, I'm talking about using computers running Linux-based operating systems. No Windows, MacOS, iOS, or Android. Home residential Internet is fine, especially if your computer is always on and always connected to communications (Tor Browser open to Tuta or Proton Mail, Jami running, etc.) The idea is to have a constant trickle of traffic to and from that one VPN node.
All actual online accounts should be created with, and only accessed with, Tor. Tuta, Proton Mail, Internet Archive, and Diaspora are all quite Tor-friendly.

The problem with Iraq is that they were the exact opposite of terrorist or even an enemy. The deputy leader, Tariq Aziz, was a christian so hardly a Muslim extremist government. Iraq was actively fighting a war against Iran on behalf of the US prior to the invasion and the US was supplying Iraq with weapons for that. If you think back to the time, in all the photos of Hussien after the start of the war there were lots of British AIr Force behind him. This was because the British had the contract to provide defence for Iraq and the RAF ran the Iraq Air Force. So Britain backed the invasion of a country they were contracted to defend. A country that was armed by the US. Hussein wanted to sell oil to Europe in Euros which the US saw as a threat to the US economy. I am not going to continue but there is no defence for what the US did and that others assisted does not make it any better, it simply makes other's complicit.

Having enough problems of their own the US had no need to get involved in a conflict that they had made a point of keeping out of especially now they had a war of their own to focus on. It is also worth mentioning that far from stopping any spread the US became great allies of the Soviets who attacked Poland with Germany thereby starting WWII and were equally socialist. this was a *big* problem on the underground rave scene in my old region (made worse by the copious amounts of drugs consumed and that the abusers often had access to resources such as drugs, cars/vans and sound equipment so were able to get deep into the scene).
Its got marginally better these days but only because folk have been mostly forced straightedge (also they got older and many have kids so are worried about their safety)
@vfrmedia yeah sadly this is the case with a lot of music scenes. its a reflection of the hegemonic culture. sexism on the macro level reflects on the micro level, even within subcultures who ostensibly refute such things. as an enthusiastic pothead, i would like to think people can get fucked up and not treat others disrespectfully, but sadly that seems to often times not be the case.
my experience was drugs simply amplified both the good and bad aspects of people (in the same way that if you feed poor signals into your amplifier it will sound rough in the loudspeakers), but what saddened me was it seems it was only *after* the cops/govt clamped down on all the drugs use and passed new laws that folk took a look at themselves and realised WTF was happening on the scene (so the prohibitionists won a battle even if the war is pointless)
just 10 years ago we had the centrist neoliberal governments almost turning a blind eye to partydrugs (especially new psychoactive substances) but the "drug-bros" fucked things up by not self-regulating so it all got locked down hard (particularly new DUI laws which can get folks licence suspended 1+ years even if unimpaired but with metabolites in their blood, so anyone who drives now has to go straightedge - but there's still heavy levels of alcohol use on the scene..)

Britain is /far/ more car-dependent than it should be so getting a licence suspended is a big life setback (as are the raised insurance premiums and many insurers who will refuse to quote). So this now confines a lot of partydrugs use to folk in cities with good public transport / walking / cycling (which means there are still OD's and health problems) and others just get a taxi to venues and get boozed up (with accompanying risks of violence and harrassment)

you can get away without a car in London, SE England (I did not have one when I lived there), other places in Northern England like Manchester/Leeds/Sheffield and also more populated areas of Scotland, but outside these a car is often required (especially for work, many jobs still require in person attendance and there's more work in fields like construction/maintenance than office jobs these days (lots of those jobs got offshored)

@SrRochardBunson yeah, im mostly lay person myself. i have a TLS cert. updating it every so often is not a big deal. updating it almost monthly seems like a pita. and if i were a professional web dev managing a bunch of sites... i think i would be pissed. plus if updating cert all the time... i feel like that increases the chance of a bad actor having the opportunity to mitm. but again, im not sure. wondering what more-educated folks think 🙃

The problem with ML-based translation software, which is basically all translation software at this point, is that some languages are just not very well resourced/documented.
Like, there is no true consensus among the Persian diaspora on how to romanize Farsi, with most just defaulting to ad hoc Finglish.
This basically causes Google Translate to confidentially spit out total nonsense from time to time, based on super limited datasets.
Text-to-speech software like Narakeet struggles also because Persian script has implied vowels that are represented with optional diacritics instead of characters.
It's not dissimilar to Japanese furigana, where you really only show it if you're writing something ambiguous. Otherwise, native speakers usually have enough context to pick up what word you meant anyways.
But most translation software is used by non-native speakers of a language, who have no way to pick apart these inaccuracies.
Like, I'm super grateful for how much translation software has improved in my lifetime, but the little “Hey, our automated outputs might not be 100% totally correct” disclaimers really ought to be more prominent for certain languages.
When I use translation software it's either to double check my extremely bad Spanish, to use simple common words to try to communicate and to get the basic outline of another language text. I do my best to try to work around the shortcomings. Using translation software on Yu-Gi-Oh cards is wildly inaccurate and there isn't even that much to them compared to a lot of other things you'd want to use it for!
