in case anyone is curious i pay about 35$/mo on natural gas which is almost entirely fees. carbon tax added like 5-11$/mo to that (of course all the carbon tax i paid was *by far* less than the carbon rebate) saskenergy offers a service where we get normalized bills so that we pay an monthly average every month so that my bill doesn't increase in the winter (but we do pay in the summer when we don't actually use it) but because it's virtually 100% fees there's really no risk of moral hazard for using extra gas or anything - the fees are required to be paid regardless of whether we use any gas or not.
this is regardless of how big of a building i live in too -- it's always been about the same, the fees slowly creeping up with inflation/time.
[i'd like to invest in the building i live in so that it uses less natgas but since the amount of gas is so low relative to the fees it's absurdly low priority rn - there's some obvious if not very economical even at 10$/mo carbon tax ways to do this but just gotta get 'em done]
@Xenophon well, since mark carney/scott moe got rid of the tax it's not "saving the planet" anymore in either case. (and i'm not going to get the rebates either, which sucks for me personally)
@Xenophon it's not 'for doing' anything. it's a rebate to balance out some of the social effects of taxation. ie to make the main effect of the tax *increase the standard of living of people* rather than lower it
@Xenophon Not in canada. It's not a tax credit it was a quarterly cheque. Just like our GST cheques, which work the same way. It's free money for no action *to offset the social effect of the other side of the tax*
