However things were made infinitely more difficulty by a self-inflicted goof on my part (that's what I get for not trusting the output the AI gave me and remarkably it wasn't ChatGPT but Google Gemini. I had the wrong Ubuntu "release" (jammy instead of noble) in my apt sources). No wonder I couldn't reinstall anything!

All fixed. But my networking might be a bit screwed up now since I had to set everything up manually in root's CLI.
And I figured out what "desktop environment" that took over my Cinnamon desktop: something called "mutter" whatever the fuck that was.
I deleted all references to mutter and things so far are fine.
I didn't do anything though. That's what pisses me off. Every app that is a Flatpak I use it. The last thing I installed was openweb-ui and that was with pipx.
Oh well.

I got me a cute little portable CO2 monitor, as part of my "I am immunocompromised and don't want to get sick 8 weeks at a time from 'minor' illnesses that don't even give other people symptoms" lifestyle. Rebooted my workstation and went to login and was presented with a completely new and foreign desktop environment. One I have never seen before, didn't know how to navigate, and have no idea where it came from or how it got installed.
Worse yet my previous desktop environment is missing from the Gnome/ Cinnamon login window.
So now I'm completely reinstalling the cinnamon desktop environment completely from scratch.
Frustrating as hell.
Say what you want about Windows or Mac but at least I never had to worry about my entire computer's user interface going tits up on me.
I bought an old System 80 from the vintage computer market (it’s a clone of the TRS-80 model 1 that was popular in the antipodes it its day). Like many of these machines it had been lovingly hobbyist-upgraded. This one had a second bank of RAM chips piggybacked atop the factory chips, with chip select lines free-form routed above the mainboard in tinned copper wire; this was a common mod, just like today computers from the store were near-criminally under resourced with RAM. Less typical was the pentagonal arrangement of inductor coils, the copper coils apparently connected with silver (not tin, actual Argentum) wire. Not clear what this mod does, let’s see if she boots.

As with messages, each instance can have it’s own censorship policies but no one instance can censor the entire network.
Given the wild-west nature of the fediverse, it is probably not suitable for children under 14, and you’re guaranteed to find some material that will offend virtually everyone. With federated search engines, material that is inappropriate will usually be flagged sensitive or nsfw (not safe for work) so as long as you don’t expand material marked as such, you can avoid this sort of material. There are occasionally people who violate these rules, we do our best to remove such individuals none the less some will get through.

Friendica.Eskimo.Com
Friendica is a decentralized long format macrobloging message network. It is similar in format to facebook however there is no centralized censorship. Also, it is able to federate with all other federated message systems which use ActivityPub protocol and also we have extensions that allow it to speak to several other networks via other protocols.
Hubzilla.Eskimo.Com
Hubzilla is similar in message format to Friendica in that it allows long posts. However, it specializes in it’s ability to provide connectivity to multiple protocols and so we include it in our mix of federated services primarily for the better connectivity it offers. Hubzilla provides a great deal of interoperability between many networks though ActivityPub is still it’s primary protocol. Hubzilla gives you a greater degree of control over privacy than some of the other networks. You can create private channels that are served between hubzilla instances and other compatible instances.
Mastodon.Eskimo.Com
Mastodon is first and foremost an alternative to Twitter. While Twitter has Tweets, Mastodon has Toots. The format is very similar. Mastodon toots have a limit of 500 characters. Similar to the short limit of Twitter. This is why this platform is referred to as a Microbloging format. Mastodon interacts with other ActivityPub instances however when a long form blog post from another instance arrives, you are only shown a short portion with a link to follow to see the full post on the originating site.
NextCloud.Eskimo.Com
If you are a customer of Eskimo North, your login credentials will work without a domain extension to access Nextcloud. If you are not a customer you can apply for a Nextcloud account using your choice of login and password, in this case the login should include your originating network. Some features require an Eskimo North shell account to take full advantage of.
Pixelfed.Eskimo.Com
Pixelfed is a federated pixel gallery. A place where you can share your photos to the widest audience possible, and you can view what others have shared. Instance is new as of April 6th, 2025.
Yacy.Eskimo.Com
Yacy is a federated search engine. There are several thousand instances on the Internet. Each instances crawls whatever portion of the web the administrator requested. It is also possible for the administrator of a site with relatively few resources to request a larger site to do crawls on their behalf. Unfortunately, it does not provide a method for an end user to initiate a crawl, but if you send e-mail to support@eskimo.com and request a crawl, we will initiate a crawl on your behalf.

But it's true!
Had to buy a new electric kettle because I almost burned my RV down with my old one. (It refused to shut off, all the water inside evaporated, and just sat there getting hotter and hotter.)
So I bought this cheap electric kettle from Walmart from "Chefman" and this thing gives me so much joy.
It's got a glass decanter so you can immediately see how much water is in it. Blue LEDs at the base light up and make a little light show as the water boils.
And it's the perfect size! 1000ml capacity means it heats the water up really fast and a liter of water is the perfect size for a bowl of oatmeal and a cup of tea.
I love the little thing.
Gerade habe ich geschaut, wie viele Accounts/Server dieser Node im Fediverse kennt. Das Ergebnis überrascht dann doch. Insbesondere die Anzahl der Account, sowie die Verteilung auf den verschiedenen Projekten.
Wichtig: das sind die Daten dieses Servers. Auf einem anderen kann das ganz anders aussehen

that's an oversimplification. russia has a right to protect majority ethnic russians in an area that had a referendum to withdraw from the CIA coup governent of 2014, and suffered a lot of artillery attacks against civilians since then. not to mention all the bioweapons labs the US had set up there, and the ambitions to join nato since the minsk accords.

it's a completely valid point- there has been a long standing agreement between russia and NATO that NATO would not move "one inch to the east" and this has not been honored
