Exarcheia under siege: Behind the Saturday’s Riot They Don’t Want You to Understand (Athens, Greece)
On the Saturday night of April 12th 2025, dozens of anarchists attacked with Molotov the scores of riot policemen that had encircled a live gig taking place in Strefi Hill of Exarcheia, in support of the people in Palestine. The public discussion that followed the fierce riot that unfolded and the threats made by members of the greek government to crush the anarchist movement in the neighbourhood, was about the events of that night, but purposely avoided addressing the reasons that led to that.
Exarcheia has always been a place under siege and attack. But in the last few years, the transformation of the neighborhood is taking place through systemic violence, with gentrification as a weapon. Once a cradle of radical thought and political resistance, the neighborhood is now the site of what many describe as an occupation. On any given day, Exarcheia Square—the area’s only communal open space—is hemmed in by riot police. Three corners of the square are guarded 24 hours a day, their presence a constant reminder of the state’s menace to the people in the area. Since August 9, 2022, when construction began on a new metro station beneath the square, this militarized posture has only deepened. The project has been met with uncompromising local opposition, not only over the destruction of the sole green space but for what it symbolizes: the state’s determination to remake Exarcheia in its own image. Under the right wing New Democracy government, Exarcheia has become a symbol of ideological confrontation. Every day the police march in regimented formations, changing shifts with military-like choreography.
Their omnipresence has turned daily life into a tense theater of surveillance and intimidation. People often face arbitrary detentions and, in many cases, excessive force. This is not simply a story about urban renewal. It is a struggle over history, memory, and the right to dissent. Bulldozers and Batons: The Violence of Gentrification The construction of the metro station on Exarcheia square has become a flashpoint—not merely for environmental or logistical reasons, but because it is seen as the latest front in a campaign of displacement. To critics, this is gentrification with riot shields. Because it aims to seal off for a decade the main free space that people can gather, when there are other locations more suitable or useful for a metro station, like near the National Archaeological Museum with more than half a million visitors annually, only 2 blocks away from Exarcheia Square. Rents have soared. Prices jumped from €5.50 to €8.50 per square meter between 2017 and 2022, whilst recent listings show rates exceeding €10, effectively doubling. Longtime residents find themselves priced out, their leases ended to turn it to Airbnb. Local businesses struggle to coexist with boutique cafés, fine-dining restaurants, hipster shops that speak a different urban dialect. What is lost is not merely affordability, but identity. Gentrification is always violent, but here, it’s also ideological. It’s about erasing a memory.
The Tourist Trap of Rebellion Even as riot police tighten their grip, Exarcheia is being marketed to visitors as a bohemian enclave—gritty, “authentic,” and Instagram-ready. Guided tours invite tourists to “explore the radical side of Athens. Critics argue that tourism sanitizes the very history it seeks to showcase, turning sites of struggle into spectacles and collapsing resistance into branding. Meanwhile, dissent is punished with severity. All kinds of protests or political gatherings are usually met with tear gas and detentions. Graffiti disappears under fresh coats of paint. Squats are evicted.
The tension between image and reality is as palpable as the smell of tear gas that sometimes lingers in the air. Memory as a Battleground Urban transformation is rarely neutral. In Exarcheia, it is inextricably tied to an effort to overwrite a particular version of history—a history in which the neighborhood’s resistance to authoritarianism remains central. The construction sites and real estate billboards serve a dual function: physical development and symbolic conquest. “Urban cleansing,” some call it. The square, once a gathering place for people, is now a fenced-off construction site under constant surveillance. Its fate mirrors that of the neighborhood itself—under renovation, under guard, and, many fear, under erasure. Yet despite the pressure, Exarcheia’s spirit is not easily extinguished. Murals still bloom on alley walls. Political posters appear overnight. And each evening, as the sun dips behind Mount Lycabettus, the question lingers: How should people react against the silent killer of gentrification that one day finds you with your suitcases at hand, silently forcing you to leave your home forever?

Encore une promesse qui n’a pas été tenue… C’est l’exact inverse que démontrent les dernières semaines, secouées par les initiatives brutales de Donald Trump. L’UE est ignorée dans les négociations sur l’Ukraine, et réagit de manière dérisoire aux conflits commerciaux. L’UE, c’est la paralysie et l’effondrement économique. L’UE fait de nous les dindons de la farce
Bien sûr, ce n’est pas une surprise. Certains l’avaient compris dès l’Acte Unique ou Maastricht. Mais les dernières semaines éclairent d’une manière particulièrement brutale tous les vices de forme du machin européen, aux intérêts trop divergents pour aboutir à un plus petit dénominateur commun qui ait le moindre poids dans le cours des évènements. Pourtant, notre continent a été la première puissance économique de la planète. Aujourd’hui, nous ne sommes plus qu’un ensemble affaibli, qui n’a plus d’autre poids que celui de son marché, guère dynamique, à cent lieues de l’influence des USA ou de la Chine. Loin de nous avoir permis de faire le poids, l’UE nous affaiblit et réduit notre poids dans le monde. Et cela est particulièrement criant pour un pays comme le notre, qui avait un vrai poids dans la marche du monde, et qui est réduit aujourd’hui aux gesticulations grotesques et vulgaires de son Jupiter de pacotille.
D’abord, il y a la négociation sur la fin de la guerre en Ukraine. Elle est menée en Arabie Saoudite, avec les États-Unis comme maître de cérémonie abrupt et intéressé, sans que les pays européens soient invités à la discussion, une humiliation qui en dit long sur le poids réel de l’UE sur une guerre qui se passe pourtant en Europe. La guerre commerciale déclenchée par Donald Trump montre à nouveau à quel point l’UE ne pèse rien, ou presque. Alors que la Chine, qui vend trois fois plus à l’Oncle Sam que l’inverse, ose répondre aux droits de douane, l’UE se fait toute petite. Derrière les déclarations martiales de certains dirigeants Français, l’UE a suspendu ses mesures, alors que les USA en gardent certaines (droit de douane minimum de 10%, et même de 25% pour l’automobile, l’acier ou l’aluminium). Les mesures sur l’acier sont ridicules pour qui sait que les USA nous vendent des volumes absolument dérisoires…
Car même si le président états-unien a renoncé à des mesures plus fortes (les 20% de droits de douane pour toute l’UE), au bout du compte, le retrait de nos mesures de rétorsion aux droits de douane sur l’automobile ou aux 10% marque une nouvelle fois l’impuissance du machin européen. Les USA nous agressent et l’UE se laisse faire. Bien sûr, notre excédent commercial fait que nous n’avons pas intérêt à une escalade, mais ce qui est frappant, c’est que les pays réagissent en ordre dispersé, ne permettant pas un front commun. Et la remise en cause du dogme libre-échangiste provoque une erreur système des eurocrates qui répondent à Trump en lui proposant plus de libre-échange… Pourtant, il y avait des moyens de pression : suspendre les amendes sur les émissions de CO2 en 2025 pouvait soulager nos constructeurs automobiles (et affaiblir Tesla) ou agir sur les pratiques fiscales des multinationales US.
Mais l’UE comporte des parasites fiscaux, qui ne sont pas prêts à se fâcher avec les multinationales US, et l’Allemagne refuse tout conflit commercial qui risque de mettre à mal ses exportations. Résultat, l’UE laisse faire, et surtout, se laisse faire. Au contraire d’une Chine qui réagit, l’UE reste passive, faisant le minimum syndical pour donner le change à ses opinions publiques. Pire, elle propose plus de libre-échange aux USA, de nouveaux accords avec d’autres pays, et semble même accueillir de manière favorable une expansion des échanges avec la Chine, alors même que le déferlement de véhicules chinois pourrait approfondir la crise de notre secteur automobile. Notre industrie subit les règles pénalisantes de l’UE face à une concurrence internationale féroce, où l’Asie protège, elle, son industrie.
Pour qui en douterait encore, les dernières semaines viennent comme un démenti cinglant à la propagande européiste. L’UE ne nous est d’aucune aide. C’est un poids, lourd, à nos chevilles. L’UE nous affaiblit et nous appauvrit, quasiment dans toutes les circonstances. Nous l’avons vu en 2001, en 2008, de 2010 à 2014, en 2020. Il est temps d’en tirer la seule conclusion logique : en partir.

Il y a vingt ans, les français, suivis par les néerlandais, rejetaient par référendum « le traité établissant une constitution pour l’Europe ». Trois ans plus tard, bafouant ce vote, députés et sénateurs adoptaient au congrès de Versailles le traité de Lisbonne, un simple copié collé du texte rejeté trois ans auparavant. Pour justifier ce véritable coup d’état mené par l’UMP et une bonne partie du PS sous la conduite de Nicolas Sarkozy et de François Hollande, la parole de François Mitterrand était remise au goût du jour « La France est notre patrie, l’Europe est notre avenir » et l’Europe était glorifiée au nom de la paix, la paix sociale, économique, politique, diplomatique, militaire.
Les exemples ne manquent pas pour illustrer l’escroquerie européenne dans tous les domaines.
Les programmes sociaux sont à la baisse, la protection sociale est une cible, la régression domine là où les rapports de classes étaient parvenus à des conquêtes, comme celles réalisées par les Français au lendemain de la seconde guerre mondiale avec le Conseil National de la Résistance. Pour ne pas tout perdre, la bourgeoisie avait alors dû céder beaucoup… C’est tout cela qui aujourd’hui est largement entamé.
Le plus criant des exemples est mis en exergue par l’actualité et concerne sans aucun doute la politique militaire engagée au nom du conflit russo ukrainien. Sous l’égide de l’Union Européenne, ce sont des centaines de milliards qui abondent les budgets militaires, pour satisfaire Donald Trump qui appelle « l’Europe à s’armer pour compter sur elle-même ». En réalité ces budgets viennent enrichir les capitalistes et l’industrie d’armement qui font leur choux gras sur le dos de la misère, des destructions, des ravages, de la mort, et sont censés apporter un bol d’oxygène au capitalisme en crise.
En France Macron qui se voit en chef de guerre pousse toujours plus à la catastrophe qui si elle se produisait serait totale. Et en même temps qu’il pérore à loisirs, sa politique saccage l’école, la santé, les salaires, l’emploi ou encore les services publics avec une austérité sans précédent depuis les années Mitterrand, qui en 1983 ouvrait la voie à la libéralisation européenne contre la préservation de la Nation et de ses atouts.
Si il y a 20 ans des voix s’étaient élevées à « gauche » contre le traité constitutionnel, avec Fabius et Mélenchon notamment, et avaient contribué à la victoire du NON à plus de 54 %, aujourd’hui tout le monde est sagement rentré dans le rang. Les insoumis, comme le PS, les Verts et le PCF, capables d’être véhéments en paroles, ont voté les crédits de guerre au parlement français comme au parlement européen. Dés le départ les divagations sur le plan A suivi éventuellement d’un plan B donnaient le ton.
Tout cela depuis 20 ans s’accompagne d’une dégénérescence morale qui au nom du wokisme et de son bras armé, la « cancel culture », menace directement en France l’universalisme républicain et organise la fragmentation au nom d’un communautarisme étranger à notre histoire, nos traditions, nos valeurs.
Le woksime illustre bien le paradoxe que nous vivons. Majoritairement, très majoritairement, les Français sont opposés aux contraintes européennes comme à l’idéologie qui les sous-tend. Le wokisme ne doit par exemple préoccuper que quelques pourcents de la population, mais c’est cette minorité qui est influente dans les milieux politiques, ministériels, associatifs, syndicaux ou encore scolaires ou culturels. Pour tout être censé, un homme est un homme, une femme une femme, et leur rencontre peut donner naissance à un enfant. Mais pour la minorité élitaire, le genre doit s’imposer à la réalité biologique, et les docteurs Mengele ou Follamour sont appelés à la rescousse pour modifier le sexe à la demande, pendant que la PMA et GPA pour tous font du ventre de la femme une marchandise et du bébé un objet comme tout autre auquel on est censé « avoir droit » pourvu qu’on puisse payer.
Voilà le point de jonction entre tous qui sur le fond se retrouvent sur les mêmes valeurs, la même politique européenne, destructrice économiquement, politiquement, socialement, culturellement de la civilisation.
L’Union Européenne est le dénominateur commun des forces politiques dites de droite ou de gauche. Il y a 20 ans le peuple a dit NON et s’est ensuite vu confisquer sa victoire dans un déni de démocratie auquel les institutions européennes ont pris goût, décidant aujourd’hui qui est légitime ou pas dans son propre pays pour se présenter aux suffrages des électeurs. Cela s’appelle la dictature. Et là comme ailleurs la dictature ne peut avoir qu’un temps.
Le réveil des peuples risque bien d’être tumultueux, et le plus tôt sera le mieux...

@FemaleIsNotAFeelingWell…I didn’t realize I was getting a secondary infection (exposure to fucking toddlers 3 days earlier) so I actually did a 100 mile ride April 16 because I thought I was getting better and the weather was good. And you know when you do that you are sustained by endorphins and used to “pushing through” discomfort. The moment I got home the sore throat took over and I woke up with pinkeye and nosebleeds and no appetite so I couldn’t make up my calorie deficit as I usually do the day after. So that was pretty fucked up and well yeah.

Heute war ich auf einem Lieblingsweg spazieren. Es wachsen dort verschiedenste Moose, Farn, umgestürzte Bäume liegen quer. Verrottendes Holz zieht Käfer an, es gibt immer etwas Neues zu entdecken. Nach starkem Regen kann man sehen, wo sich das Wasser einen Weg gebahnt hat und es werden Sandsteine freigewaschen. Im oberen Teil ist dann auch altes Sandstein-Pflaster besser als sonst sichtbar. Warum dieser Weg dort einmal befestigt wurde oder ob das Teil einer alten Straße war, da kann ich nur spekulieren.
Nach dem Regen war der Boden wunderbar weich und man konnte den Pflanzen ansehen, wie sehr die Natur aufatmet. Etliche Schnecken kreuzten meinen Weg, eine davon war sogar eine tollkühne und leichtfüßige Artistin. Ein Reh bellte und auch die Vögel trällerten sich noch eins. Der Wald roch frisch und erdig.
Leider konnte ich keine Beine-baumel-Pause einlegen, die Bänke waren alle zu nass. Bei den nur gut 6 km war das aber auch nicht wirklich nötig. Dafür konnte ich noch von den frisch gewaschenen Fichtentrieben und Buchenblättern naschen 😋. Schon bald schmeckt das nicht mehr.
