this morning, Redhat employees banned me from the freedesktop.org gitlab infrastructure - so censored all my work (not just on Xorg). They killed my account, my git repos, my tickets in Xorg and closed all my merge requests. And then making fun on social media about it.
They fired the shot that's heared around the world.
So much for freedesktop.org being "independent" and embracing freedom. Perhaps we should nominate them for the next Orwell award.
It's now clear that freedesktop.org is the Redskirts, and they want to kill X. By the way, the same corporation that tied to proprietarize a lot of FOSS code, including the Linux kernel (and I've been one of those who warned them about terminating our license grants them).
My most evil heresies probably were:
a) forking Xorg and making actual progress b) talking to a journalist whose name must not be spoken in many other Redhat/IBM tax evasion outlets, like GNOME (they're also banning honorable long time contributors for just mentioning that name) c) inviting anybody to join me, without discrimination

I've got Intel Internal UHD630 graphics and as a result can use the Kernel based X-server. Does not make sense to go to a userland server unless it offers some substantial benefits. What is unique to the Libre Xserver?
This guy's fix of a 13y old xserver bug was reverted because the fork he made to apply the patch was deleted, so the merge request was reverted after it had been approved.

@joborun linux I've got three Redhat based servers, a Fedora, A Rocky8, and an Alma8, not going to nine because of the lack of support for NIS, and I've got an antique Centos 6 server that is still serving one UUCP customer. The rest of my infrastructure is mostly Ubuntu 24.04 based. My workstation is Ubuntu 24.04 based, so Redhat is not horridly relevant since the only time I use the displays on the Redhat machines is via x2go. Mostly just curious if there was a better alternative to the kernel based X server, Wayland definitely isn't it.
This just tells me you are 100% systemd dependent, you know no other way. What I would suspect is that you wouldn't even take the chance of trying something else and moving it.
systemd open bugs and security issues are between 4 and 5 digit at all times through its history.
runit in the past 10 years has had one bug ?? its code wasn't kept up to latest glibc library and had to be touched up/patched, which was done 9 months ago. Now we are down to boring 0.
But if you really want to get into complex server service supervision and dependency management you need a little study of s6 and maybe 66 (see Obarun). This is state of the art. skarnet.org has been up and running for years, it serves mail, git, web, mailing lists, who knows what else, and it publishes its record of down time instances (even power failures)
Void was one of the first distributions that adopted systemd, it has been running runit ever since getting out of it. Debian 7 (not that long ago, didn't have systemd, it was introduced in Debian 8). s6 and 66 have been supported by unofficial repositories
The term "modern" has been heavily abused by the "gang" it is an empty term providing zero rational arguments of why "modern" is better and in what way is it "modern".
sinit is proof that as far as init goes all you need is a few lines of code, with "modern" equipment the difference in performance between sinit and systemd is measured in nanoseconds. Init is done and finished as commonly known stage 1, which also creates the escape route for the final stage (call it Z) of shutdown or its more complex alternative, reboot. What goes on between stage 1 and stage Z is init irrelevant, should be and should have been. The frozen empty argument that systemd floats as defense is that it is better than sysvinit or BSD scripts, because it can start all those things in stage 1 in parallel, one process doesn't have to wait for another. When you say that daemontools, perp, anope, runit, s6 do the same but in a better more efficient way they pretend that those systems copied systemd. If you turn their argument around on them and call them "modern" they will point out that they are older than systemd, daemontools are. So you can never really hold a rational argument with the religious clergy of the linux-hydra. Their thought is as clear as any clergy discussing astrophysics.
The clue is that if you package OpenRC (a sysvinit improvement) runit, s6, and sinit, and combine them in one superpackage to coexist in one system (they can) the space of this package is less than half of systemd. You can use them on BSD, on solaris, or any unix fork, while system is only useable in linux.
So funding for this evil kernel and the owners of this systemd X/wayland complexity is one, the goals are now clear, and the make MS even look innocent in tactics and development.
I gave you a link above to study if you are trully interested, but please don't come here with IBM fanboy tactics to tell us off.
MX is nothing without antiX, just a theme creator. The only difference between MX and debian is pid1, the rest is just like debian. So not a true distro, just a theme creator like Mint or Ubuntu or Manjaro.
Basically any of those fake distros claiming to be systemd-free using elogind are just fakes, advertising the technicality/legality that pid1 is NOT systemd, but everything else is! Gentoo and Void are the latest to turn rogue and adopt it, artix, MX, devuan were designed since day1 to utilize it.

How much difference there is in performance between system-v init and systemd is a function of how many things are started up and how many cores you got and if your drives are fast enough to keep up. On my i9-10980xe boxes, I have 18 cores and I've got them clocked at 4.5Ghz and 256GB of RAM, root partition is on RAID 1 NVME, systemd is a definite win in this situation.
I think you missed my pun about sysvinit and 20th century relics.
What init is and what services are "started" up is a very blurry picture due to systemd.
This is stage 1 in runit (+ bootlogd optional) Anything else is stage2, they may seem hierarchical by traditional thought, but not many wait for the previous to finish . s6 goes a step beyond this and doesn't separate runit-init with runsvdir (service supervisor) it is all one process that supervises all services, and is able to log and provide a tty earlier than any other system. Advantages handy for deep enterprise commercial grade systems, not for home/hobby users. For us runit is plenty.
I have to disagree about MX-Linux... it's not just Debian with some window dressing tied on. It includes a very nice GUI toolbox for things like making a bootable copy of an installed OS, a Live kernel updater, a USB formatter, etc. I know there are terminal commands for these jobs, but a desktop user like me doesn't care to fool around with the terminal and, I'm downright phobic using the terminal. I feel like I'd mash the wrong button and accidentally ignite the Earth's atmosphere and wipe out all life on the planet or something. Gimme the point-and-click stuff any day.
That said, however: I see the whole Linux ecosystem being corrupted by Big Tech money from Microshit, Red Hat, IBM, Google, all those guys. BSD is largely free of all that Big Money corruption and politicization. Which is why I've been experimenting with a desktop OS based on FreeBSD. For me it's as much about ethics as just about anything else.

To be phobic of a terminal is one thing, to blindly accept a nuclear reactor under your bed to power you alarm clock is another. Some friend with similar tendencies who kept being convinced of living systemd-free but slipping back into the needle (Arch), used the argument all he cared about was to have his usb-stick mount and show in his filemanager when he inserted it so he can click and drag files into the "stick", or read a cd/dvd once it was inserted in the optimal medium drive. So I wrote a few lines of a script chmod it into 0755, told him to save it on his desktop as an icon (filemanager maximized without borders with a background image) and asked him to click on it when he entered the stick (so it wouldn't run and parse system directories all day just in case a stick was inserted). I told him within 3-4" the writable/readable partitions of the stick would appear on the list of media on the side of his filemanager, whether ntfs or ext they were there. I also asked him how many hard disk drives he had in his system so the script wouldn't have to account for such, it would just read /dev/sdc /dev/sdd ..
But instead you have logind, polkit, dbus, sysusers, .. running all day, huge amounts of code, just to be able to do this one thing, automount an external disk and make it appear in filemanager.
I do know that this script would have to become more complex for general/generic use to all systems but it can also be edited by non-coder capable users just as easy to make it work well in a particular system.
So there is much gray area between working on console, not even a graphic terminal, and having a full blown carnival of Gnome or Plasma to deal with as overhead.
You mean which desktop environment, I assume... the default is MATE, and there's an unofficial Xfce version available. No one owns either one. But, I really think you just want to pick a fight with anyone who uses anything you don't approve of, so just count me out of this discussion.

Individual Republican representatives added things based on their own constituents and companies in their districts. There is spending that is obligatory. They agreed (mostly) on rather large cuts to Medicaid over the next few years, which is actually a big ask for them to pass and they will probably pay for it next year in elections since republican districts tend to have more people on Medicaid. They always add tons to the department of defense, which imo needs a fucking audit instead since we’re talking about waste/fraud/abuse. And then apparently no one read the bill.
Besides which, Congress was never going to go along with all of the spending cuts that Trump and Doge came up with and Congress is the one who controls the budget per Constitution. The President has no control over the budget himself, but he can ask and work with Congress to implement what he wanted. Doge’s ‘cuts’ were mostly a show for the media I think.
Additionally, the Senate is already refusing to vote for the bill as is and they’re rewriting it. It’ll probably take a good portion of the summer before anything gets passed. The senate generally moves slower than the house.
The shenanigans over passing it were for the media, which has been criticizing Mike Johnson for over a year now for not passing a budget since he became the Speaker if I remember correctly.
DOGE was a completely irrelevant number of cuts and executive spending grew after those cuts. The Trump admin made a big deal about the social programs growing points for things that don't amount to much. Any CIA activity basically just moved back to the State Dept, so they probably saved some overhead on having to lie about certain programs. USAID was always a conduit for CIA operatives to infiltrate foreign governments. People who defend it (and I have a friend who worked directly for a USAID program in DC and defends it) sadly are not aware of just how entrenched the CIA was in those affairs (and still is). During the Kennedy years the number of operatives on the CIA payroll in US embassies outnumbered those employed by the State Department.
Most of what we've seen is performative, including this kayfabe with Elon and Trump. It's all narrative building bullshit, meant to build division and drama, when both of them are going to get everything they want. The spending bill is just a means to continue the slow collapse of the US and world economies with ever growing irreclaimable debt.

This shell is based on gestures starting from the screen edges. A short swipe from left to right will bring a launcher with the default applications pinned to it, and your current open applications as well, appearing on top of the pinned shortcuts. A longer swipe from the left edge will bring the whole list of applications.
If you swipe from the right towards the left in a short motion, you'll switch to the next open app. If you make a long swipe from the right edge, then you'll get to a multitasking view, with apps displayed in a 3D layout.
You can swipe an app's card up to close it, or tap an app to resume it.
Finally, a swipe from the top edge of the screen will bring the notifications, and the quick settings, which don't display as on most other operating systems: they're in a straight line, that you can scroll from left to right, and tap each icon to get to a quick few shortcuts, like enabling or disabling a specific feature, or dive deeper into the settings.
The Applications
Out of the box, you get a nice calculator that handles rotation beautifully to display more options, and lets you swipe from the bottom in portrait to still get access to these options. The default calendar app looks good, with an Agenda view that shows your various events in order, a day, week, month, and year view.
I won't dwell on the camera app, as support for the pinephone camera is still in its infancy, it's rare that it even displays an image.
The Clock application lets you add various clocks from all around the world, start a timer, or use a stopwatch. Swiping from the bottom in the "clock" tab lets you create alarms, although I would have preferred alarms to be a full tab in the app instead of hiding that behind a swipe.
The contacts app does what you'd expect, list your contacts and allow to set some as favorites and you can swipe from the bottom to create a new one. The file manager looks good, although it's a bit slow to start, and lets you create files, and change how the directories look.
The messaging app works as you'd expect, letting you type messages and send them to your contacts. You can also swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen to start a new message.
The web browser is alright, if a bit slow to start.It lets you pick your search engine and homepage, and display web pages in desktop mode, but there are no sync capabilities for history, bookmarks, or passwords, so it's not going to be fantastic to use.
There is also a terminal app that looks really good and has quick aliases in the bottom left corner. The Notes app is also pretty competent, letting you swipe up from the bottom to create a new note, and syncs with evernote.
This leaves us with the phone dialer, letting you pick a contact, or just type the number you want to call, and the weather app, which is really black and white and pretty spartan, and it reminds me of a windows phone app.
The Settings
The settings page uses a sensible icon grid.
Ubuntu Touch is pretty barebones in that regard: in terms of customization, you can change the wallpaper, the ringtone for calls and messages, and that's about it. A few apps let you switch to a dark mode in the settings, and some offer to respect a "system preference", but that's not something I could find in the settings.
The AppStore
The OpenStore serves as the App Store for Ubuntu Touch. It's not a package manager like you could find on other Mobile Linux alternatives: no way to download a desktop program here, at least not graphically.
You'll get apps that were made specifically for ubuntu touch, and there are around 400 of these in total. You can also get a few Matrix clients, and a nice email client called Dekko 2, among other applications.
Updates are handled in the system settings, with over the air updates for the system itself, and for the apps, grouped at the same place.

Regarding the self-deprecant comments... well, it's complicated, but let's say I was in a bad time and dealing with a bad situation in certain communities regarding harsh criticism and I was tired of that, and just felt the need to break with that and go more my way without any pressure. Feeling a lot better about that already, so no worries 😀
thats good to hear. theres a lot of pressure from our economic and societal systems to make the creation of art something that turns a profit, or needing to be a certain amount of prolific. all nonsense. the point of making art is the part where you are making it. that journey, that mindset. the best therapy, imho (or at least thats what i keep telling myself bc hell no i;m not paying for therapy lol).
heck yeah! Couldn't agree more. In fact sometimes it's not even about economic stuff but more like some folks pretending to be Yngwie Malsteen (even when Yngwie seems to be not that arrongant anymore haha), or obsessing on production/mixing (which can be kinda elitistic, since oftentimes that's more a matter of money and expensive tools rather than simply doing stuff). Art should be more about having fun and expressing things, not about bratting or obsessing on getting better at it!
and yeah, I like the idea behind the paragraph you quoted! I can't say I was a huge fan of everything that was done in the internet in the mid-late 2000s, and it wasn't the greatest times for many people (too much of bigot bullsh*t, you know). But when it comes to art and creatives stuff, definitively missing that special charm and the prominence of more amateur-ish attitude, in the best way. I just love the underground side of music and art 😀 and it's a pity some of that got lost.

yeah, that's my suspiction. After all, you wouldn't expect a random artist with 20 views/listens to get noticed by the algorhythms, right? totally! I'm glad I decided to jump into this place. There's a vibe that reminds to that late 2000s internet (like forums and blogs) in cultural/entertainment terms while keeping up with the times for the more important stuff (like ethics, diversity, etc). So it's like combining the best of both old and current times without the bad of neither 😀

i don't think i can ever go back to watching those shitshows tbh not now knowing that majority of it is slop(with denuvo mind you) if not outright subversive leftoid shit
its not nearly as bad as the last couple of years (still mostly shit tho) im too apathetic at this point and just get satisfaction knowing most of them will bomb
