No, Von der Leyen. Healthcare won't be improved by #AI.
On the contrary, AI is destroying the future of healthcare. Its engines are stealing researcher's work and atrophying the brains of future health professionals.
Medicine is a social science that needs critical thinking, empathy and compassion. All very distant concepts from those powerful shortsighted technocrats ruling the European Commission, the only beneficiaries of those €200 billion.

Quoting Haaretz's opinion column on the Gazafication of the West Bank:

Israeli forces fatally shot a 20-year-old man sleeping in his bed in a West Bank village, highlighting a disturbing pattern of disregard for Palestinian lives within the IDF.

[...] Army forces raided a Palestinian village in the dead of night, forcibly broke into an apartment building where no wanted men live and, for no reason at all, woke up all the building's residents, including babies, children and the elderly. Immediately after that, soldiers broke down the door of one apartment and entered it. One of the soldiers began raining live fire at almost point-blank range on a young man sleeping in his bed. It's not clear whether the young man managed to wake up, but it is clear that he was shot while still lying in bed.

[...] The fact is that judging by the IDF spokesperson's response, the military police haven't even opened an investigation, as is normal in cases where criminal behavior is suspected. Moreover, the soldier hasn't been arrested or even suspended from his position. All this means that in the view of the army's senior commanders, killing an innocent young man in his bed is a routine action.

[...] That's what happens when the army is killing thousands of innocents in the Gaza Strip – paramedics, journalists, children, elderly people, women and recently also hungry people waiting in line at food distribution centers. The Gazafication of the West Bank is at its height, and soldiers there evidently hunger to behave like their colleagues in Gaza do. And the IDF lets them do so, thereby emptying its onetime slogan about being the most moral army in the world of all content.

Tom Homan Says Trump Admin Sending National Guard to L.A. Over ICE Protests

Donald Trump’s “Border Czar” Tom Homan said Saturday the administration is planning to send in the National Guard Saturday evening to quell protests in Los Angeles.

“This is about enforcing the law, and again, we’re not going to apologize for doing it,” Homan said on Fox News. He continued: “We’re already ahead of the game. We were already mobilizing. We’re gonna bring National Guard in tonight. We’re gonna continue doing our job. We’re gonna push back on these people, and we’re gonna [enforce] the law.”

On Saturday night, following Homan’s on-camera remarks, both national Democratic and Republican figures were scrambling to figure out if he was just mouthing off, or if the federal troops were actually on their way, or just … what the hell was going on.

Two Trump administration officials say they learned about the alleged National Guard plans from journalists such as Rolling Stone’s who had reached out to them on Saturday evening, asking for clarification.

Homan did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment.

“The federal government is moving to take over the California National Guard and deploy 2,000 soldiers,” California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) wrote on Bluesky Saturday evening. “That move is purposefully inflammatory and will only escalate tensions.”

He added, “LA authorities are able to access law enforcement assistance at a moment’s notice. We are in close coordination with the city and county, and there is currently no unmet need. The Guard has been admirably serving LA throughout recovery. This is the wrong mission and will erode public trust.”

The president can request, but not order, a governor to deploy their state’s National Guard. The governor can refuse the request, and Trump would not be allowed under the Constitution to send National Guard troops to California from other states. However, the Trump administration has previously mulled invoking the Insurrection Act, which could allow the president to deploy the U.S. military domestically, federalize the National Guard, and send in troops to quell uprisings or civil disorder.

Editorializing beyond here:

The Insurrectionist invokes the Insurrection Act.

in reply to megopie

The 2nd option is likely the goal. Inflaming tensions and overreacting makes the administration look like it's tough on crime to his base. Escalating a peaceful protest into a conflict can easily be spun into "the good guys are fighting the violent illegal criminals". The people that elected Trump want a strongman dictator and he's happy to show them that. Even the politically apathetic might see the conflict as "both sides went too far".

Since I've left my last job, I've been thinking about the guy who used me as an alternative to ChatGPT whenever he hit a problem that he couldn't vibe code the answer out of at work.

He basically rotted his own brain by compulsively using ChatGPT in lieu of actually thinking with most any of the projects he was working on. Instead of taking the time to read through code in our framework, look up documentation, or do any sort of debugging, he instead just begged and pleaded with ChatGPT to try and get somewhere because "it was faster." Basically just really hammering his brain with the Programmer's Slot Machine. (@davidgerard wrote a really good article here about this specific gambling addiction angle here. I highly highly recommend reading/watching the corresponding YouTube video:
pivot-to-ai.com/2025/06/05/gen… )

Back to the story; When that wasn't working, which was a significant portion of the time, he'd then just turn and use me as a "more informed alternative" to ChatGPT.

I worked fully remote and the majority of our interactions was via a Teams chat. which apparently crossed some wires in his monkey brain and made him start just... Basically verbally barraging me like he would with the company ChatGPT instance. No thoughts at all, just an immediate process of:

- Ask vague question
- Get guess for an answer with a request for more details
- Try applying the guess blindly without thinking if it's applicable at all
- Have it not work and just report back that it didn't work.
- No follow-up details, no further explanation of what was going on or what he's trying to do. Nothing added past the original vague situation
- If lucky, I might get a screenshot of part of the error, meticulously sliced before it gave something useful in the output because he stopped reading error output to things and made no attempt to understand it. (Why? ChatGPT can do that part!)
- Rinse and Repeat until I get fed up and get into a call with him
- Fix the thing in less than a minute, pointing out that he should have been able to tell what was wrong almost immediately if he actually dropped a break-point and debugged the code at *literally any point* along the way
- Fuck off immediately after getting his fix, no thank you or anything
- start the process anew the following day when he vibe coded himself into a corner all over again

I literally had to go to leadership and make them have a talk with him and get him to leave me the fuck alone at work, after repeated attempts to establish boundaries about it, due to how much time it sucked out of me being able to work on other projects. Effectively just doubling up my work and slamming me with burn out right at the start of the year for absolutely no reason other than his belligerent insistence to just Not Do His Job Without His Hand Being Held By A Chat Window.

It rapidly went from a "He sometimes asks informed questions that I can answer and help him with. I enjoy working with him" to "The dude isn't even trying in the slightest and is now basically offloading his work onto me because he broke his capacity to actually do work independently of an external chat window. I fucking hate him and I hope he gets in a car wreck so I can get a break from the bleakness of dealing with him every goddamn morning"

ChatGPT has basically just been an absolute blight for me since it's inception. Going from the team being generally pro-crypto to intensely pro-genAI/LLM because their favorite scammers (er.. I mean YouTubers) had them hooked on a fantasy of some day making it Big by jumping from one Hype cycle to the next. I sincerely was very close to just finding an entirely different career path altogether because of just how incredibly shitty it was working with that team on just about anything, but lacking the job experience on the resume to land someplace else.

Nobody wanted to be an actual expert, nobody really wanted to learn anything. They had their degree and ChatGPT, which means they learned all they ever will need. ...While working in an industry that tends to re-invent itself every half decade or so while half-assing solutions with an outsourced bullshit generator. 🫠

All in the name of "Well it got me from point A to point B faster." and leaving it at that, despite taking significantly longer than they should have from the get go over it.

I've seen and lived what an AI Fueled future looks like:
Mediocre men harassing their talented and likely autistic peers until their peers just up and fuckin leave to a different organization out of frustration and exhaustion.

I think down the road, we'll be able to measure the negative impact using LLMs has on people's cognitive faculties by comparing it to horse kicks to the head, and only be exaggerating it by a little bit.

The Israeli Foreign Minister has accused the Freedom Flotilla activists of publicity seeking. They are referring to the Madleen as a "selfie yacht," and to its crewmembers as "celebrities."

Israel and its propaganda machine resort to doublespeak once again to discredit an action deserving the Peace Nobel. It's ironic but all too predictable how dismissive they are with terms like "selfie" or "celebrity" since these are Israel's own tactics to push its Zionist agenda. They line up all the Zio-celebrities in front of the cameras to convince the world that genocide is good.

#Madleen #FreedomFlotilla has been interceoted by Israel. Of course. And:

Israel's defence minister says Madleen passengers will be shown video of 7 October attacks

Katz said he wanted them to “see exactly who the Hamas terrorist organization they came to support and for whom they work is, what atrocities they committed against women, the elderly, and children, and against whom Israel is fighting to defend itself.” 🤬

Just to make completely clear: Israel has no legal right whatsoever to be doing this. As Francesca Albanese says:

While #Madleen must be released immediately, every Mediterranean port should send boats with aid, solidarity, and humanity to Gaza. They shall sail together—united, they will be unstoppable.

#BreakingTheSiege is a legal duty for states, and a moral imperative for all of us.

Soldiers, police, National Guard have the right & duty to disobey unlawful orders - e.g., orders that infringe upon people's constitutional freedom of assembly &right to peacefully protest.

Tips to secure SSH: cyberciti.biz/tips/linux-unix-…

The more software you use, the larger the attack surface for your Linux install is. It's always good to take a look at all the installed applications, and libraries, and remove what you don't use anymore. You can also remove packages that aren't linked to anything else and aren't used by anything.

On Debian or Ubuntu, for example, you can find these by running sudo apt autoremove

And on a desktop, you probably already apply updates, or your distro has auto updates enabled. But on a server, it's easy to let things slide, and forget to log in regularly and make sure things are up to date. I'm guilty of that myself.

And just like with packages, libraries, and apps, you should also make sure you only run the services you actually use. You can list all services running with:

systemctl list-unit-files

To stop a service you don't need, you can run

systemctl stop SERVICE

To stop the service from starting with the system, you can run

systemctl disable SERVICE

If you're on a server, the general rule of thumb is also NOT to run a graphical desktop on it. It will often be much more secure to use SSH to log in to the server remotely.

But you might also need to secure SSH first. If you have multiple users, make sure only the ones who need it have SSH access. To do that, you can edit the /etc/ssh/sshd_config file, and type AllowUsers then the names of the users that will actually have access to SSH.

Now, something that might be useful in general, for a server or a desktop, is making sure all the users are correctly handled. The first thing will be to disable root login.

If you decide to disable the root account, make sure at least one user has admin privileges though, or you'll have a system without any way to access any task with sudo. Once you're certain everything is ok, you can use the following method:

Edit /etc/passwd, and change the first line, by replacing /bin/bash, or whatever other shell root currently logs into, by /sbin/nologin (or /usr/sbin/nologin depending on the distro)

If you prefer, you can simply disable root login through SSH, so the account is still there if you want it locally, but remote attackers won't be able to login as root. To do so, you can edit /etc/ssh/sshd_config, and uncomment the PermitRootLogin line, and then set its value to no. Restart SSH with sytemctl restart sshd, and you're done.

To remove the ability to use USB, Thunderbolt or Firewire, you can add the following lines to their respective files (create them if need be). To revert this, just remove the lines that have been added in the various files by the commands.

Add: install usb-storage /bin/true to /etc/modprobe.d/disable-usb-storage.conf
Add blacklist firewire-core to /etc/modprobe.d/firewire.conf
Add blacklist thunderbolt to /etc/modprobe.d/thunderbolt.conf

“Israel has no legal authority to detain international volunteers aboard the Madleen [...] This seizure blatantly violates international law and defies the ICJ’s binding orders requiring unimpeded humanitarian access to Gaza. These volunteers are not subject to Israeli jurisdiction and cannot be criminalized for delivering aid or challenging an illegal blockade—their detention is arbitrary, unlawful, and must end immediately.”

I don’t know, asshole, was 1947 worth it? Was close to 80 years of settler colonialism and apartheid worth it? Is the current genocide of the Palestinian people being committed by israel worth it? ravenation.club/@welkin7/11465…

Israel had already declared what it was going to do. This was bound to occur. About baby formula, food and medical supplies, the Palestine authority should step up and handle it.

Gaza strip had zero Israel troops prior to 7-Oct-2023. It had hospitals, schools and electricity. Now significant portion of Gaza is rubble and it is crawling with Israeli troops.

The loosers are people on both sides. How many classes have children of Gaza missed? Was Oct 7 worth it?

Iodé is Android, but with all Google software removed. It uses Lineage OS as a base, but adds a built-in ad and tracker blocker that runs at all times, locally on the device.

The ROM itself will be familiar if you ever used a Pixel. On the Pixel 5, Iodé OS 4 was preinstalled, and it's based on Android 13. The latest security update was on January 5th 2023. The Iodé team told me they provide security updates every 2 months, and every month for beta users.

The default experience is as close to stock as can be: you have either the 3 button layout of Android, or the gestures, a dock of apps at the bottom, an app drawer by swiping up, and a few preset widgets.

In terms of apps, Iodé ships with a Firefox fork by default, which disables telemetry, trackers and enables alternative search engines right out of the box. The default email client is Pretty Easy privacy, or pEp. It's a simple email client with an easy interface, that adds end to end encryption capabilities to any mail account.

For Maps, you get Magic Earth, which is also open source, and uses OpenStreet Map. The keyboard is OpenBoard, the camera app is OpenCamera, which, while very powerful, has a terrible user interface and looks pretty bad.

Iodé comes with a tracker blocker built in. This thing works using a man in the middle attack style: the OS intercepts all communications and requests that go out of your phone, and blocks everything that's part of the blocklists. These blocklists are collaboratively sourced, and include a LOT of adblock and tracker blocker related things. This system is based on Energized Protection, which is an open source project licensed under the MIT license.

To complement this, there's a preinstalled app that lets you check out how many requests you've blocked to how many recipients.

Iodé OS relies on 2 app stores: you get F Droid for all your open source app needs, and you get the Aurora Store. Installing apps works very well, I encountered 0 problems here.

Where you'll have issues is running apps that depend on Google services. I tried installing the Youtube app, and it never opened. Other Google apps got me the same experience, like the youtube studio app. Stuff like Google Maps or Google Photos worked, but were unable to use the already added Google account in micro G.

After reaching out to the Iodé team, they told me they have identified the issue, which is fixed in the beta, and will be patched in the next OTA release.

Interestingly, stuff like my banking app worked immediately on Iodé, letting me use the phone as my secure device to authenticate purchases online, something that is usually blocked because the device doesn't pass SafetyNet checks. Here, it all worked perfectly for me.

Compared to Lineage OS, it adds all these tracker and ad blocking capabilities. You could probably replicate that yourself on Lineage, but at least here, it's setup right out of the box.

Compared to something like /e/, the latter has more advanced privacy features, with the ability to scramble your location at the press of a button, and more complete privacy controls.

But /e/ also deviates a lot from stock Android, with their own launcher, their own forks of open source apps, and generally an experience that won't appeal to everyone.
