A difficult but necessary post. The full report of the Dinah Project is out, showing systematic sexual violence by Hamas used on the 7 October massacres (and on hostages afterwards). The many incidents in six different locations suggest this was intentional, not incidental - sexual violence as a weapon.

Clear patterns of sexual violence emerge from the findings, including victims found partially or fully naked with their hands tied, sometimes to trees or poles; evidence of gang rape followed by executions; and severe genital violence. Sexual abuse also continued in captivity — released hostages reported forced nudity, physical and verbal sexual harassment, sexual attacks and threats of forced marriage.

Sadly, this report was necessary. Too many people are denying sexual violence was part of these attacks, people who in other circumstances say #BelieveHer. Perhaps it complicates their simplistic 'good guys and bad guys' view of the world, clashing with the narrative of 7 October as an act of liberation.

Needless to say - except on social media - this doesn't justify the ongoing horrific death and destruction in Gaza. (And if that's what you thought I was getting at, please go away.)

Holy 90s adventure revival, Batman. Neofeud is a non stop feast of deja vues of interesting but arguably worse games from the 90s like Noctropolis, Harvester or | Have No Mouth and | Have To Scream, done mainly by a (arguably very very intelligent) guy that is from Hawaii and works as a robotics teacher in a probably difficult place - meaning, what you see in the game are things that probably he has been living there. The best part though is how he mixes all the 90s “cd rom multimedia” cyberpunk aesthetic and how he runs with it all along. And the game is very well written, very fair (for the moment at least) and has atmosphere in spades. Maybe if the references are nothing to you, you will not be able to enjoy it. But that's part of it. Neofeud is a game about empathy, about humanity, about fighting the oppressor, which is what Cyberpunk was about until it was washed out to be the bland neon aesthetic of today. | love it. | love the author, and | hope to see many things from him. Las torres del viento persas tienen cientos de años y se originaron en el antiguo Egipto, aunque las más célebres son las de la ciudad de Yazd (Irán). Estas torres suelen ser rectangulares, se instalan en los tejados de los edificios y no requieren de electricidad. Funcionan utilizando el viento entrante y teniendo en cuenta su ondulación, dependiendo de la temperatura (el aire caliente es menos denso, por lo que flota por encima del frío). Cuando el aire accede por los agujeros de la torre, deposita sus impurezas en el pie de la torre y discurre por el interior, a veces a través de depósitos de agua que favorecen su enfriamiento. Gracias a la presión del edificio, el aire caliente sale a través de la torre.

El captador de viento de Dowlatabad es el más alto del mundo (33 metros) y todavía sigue funcionando. El sistema fue declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad en 2017, y pese a que funciona a la perfección, se ha ido dejando de lado en favor de sistemas de refrigeración que consumen energía.

This subtitle does not match the content of the article. The subtitle makes it sound like there's been some new discovery that explains what's going on. I think the article just lists some of the usual well-known contributing factors to the decline of bees, no new "discovery".

Purchases being private

I just went to get a sandwich. The ordering is (optionally) done via kiosk. This time, the kiosk started suggesting items for me based on what I'd purchased before. I was initially puzzled as to how it could recognize me prior to any identifying information being input, then realized that there was a small camera embedded in the kiosk, and that it must have done facial recognition.

Identifying customers isn't new; I understand that facial recognition has been used by grocery stores for loss prevention, to help flag people likely to steal things. But I wasn't aware that it'd reached the point of sticking all purchases into a database, regardless of the usual methods to obtain a unique identifier, like loyalty cards or obtaining a phone number.

Assuming that this becomes the norm, short of wearing a mask --- which is a pain, and runs into anti-masking laws in some areas --- I don't see how one can realistically avoid having all of one's purchasing being placed into a store's database for data-mining. That kind of bugs me --- I'd like to be able to do stuff like purchase a sandwich without having the store profile me.

Thoughts? Ways to counter it? Okay with this/not okay?

Now you know where the camera is, just hold your hand over your face long enough to put a piece of electrical tape over it.

If you're worried you'll get in trouble, just remove the tape as you leave. If you actually do get in trouble, protest that it's your right to privacy, and you've done no damage to the equipment.

Or just take a laser or mini torch to the camera, that's up to you, I won't tell..
