If you have an Ultimate 64, the one that's the whole system, tell me: how hard is it to change the KERNAL and CHARGEN ROM images used? I like the PET/VIC-20 character font and I demand JiffyDOS in all my Commodore systems.
It's very easy just put the roms you want to use on your usb stick, copy them to the internal flash memory on the U64. There are menu options that you can use to pick the kernal, chargen and basic roms. Then reboot. I have used it to use the jiffydos roms and the mega65 basic, kernal and chargen roms as well.
So the video output is either HDMI or the 8 pin video din port. This is selectable from within the U64 menus. The din port can be configured to be either the normal chroma/luma or RGBS. I believe VGA is really RGBHV. Here is a link to the original docs. web.archive.org/web/2021040703…
The new documents don't go into the details of the video pins for some reason. He improved the setup and config in the doc but removed all the nerdy stuff.
@daman_ab I believe mine is 576p50 raw HDMI output and its up to TV upscaler how badly it fucks it up (I have my TV set to keep ratio which ends up with black bars - but that’s TV side thing). I haul the thing to retro meetups and never ever found a screen that would not display it correctly or have lag.
Very easy, you only have to put ROMs there and select them. I am not super sure but I think mine has few swappable slots for ROMs and cartridges (have U64+ prev gen).
Btw. is that new cringe website Perifractic? I chuckled on katakana merch, it just does not belong so much. Commodore wasn’t really successful nor known here in Japan at all.

As I see it as completely new product building. Commodore would probably never go that way and in parallel universe where Apple did not make it is probably selling nowadays computers (be it ARM, RISC or x86, maybe niche in way Amigas were). Retro based on FPGA is really not for masses in 25. Still its awesome thing and I love to have it, but it is not Commodore.
@blami From what I gather, this is a launch product, to get them better funded and streamlined, a shakedown cruise. What I'm getting from them is a desire to make something new with retro inspiration, something we haven't got already.
@blami I'm sure they'll make mistakes, but I see reason to be generally hopeful about this one. The people involved are mostly top-tier. I don't think that this is their "this is what we make now" product, I think this is "we needed to be selling something real immediately" product, to be followed up with what they actually want to make.
That’s fair. One thing I myself feel I would want is modern computer with all bells and shit we have today that also has that ease of exploring and toying with things as C64 had. I mean I would not mind being able to open terminal window with BASIC and writing some incantation would allow me draw stuff over the current screen without learning what is window handle, message loop and context. as skeptical as I am about the sustainability of resurrecting a retro nostalgia brand of any kind, so far the new Commodore seems to be doing its best to do it the right way, and if you know what this sort of thing costs to do you know they aren't crassly trying to gouge enthusiasts so far either.
It kinda gives me the same vibes a people who complain about Stellantis ruining the Jeep Wrangler because it isn't just like a Willy's or 1st gen AMC built CJ or something like that.
Like seriously, it is a decent FPGA based platform that by all appearances will be quite open and hackable and fun that is all you can really ask for from it at this point Nobody is going to set up a foundry to make 6510s and VIC IIs and SIDs or make new CRT monitors.

The *key softwares are generally recommended if you want a lot of functions and a modern interface. I particularly like the Antennas / News Pickers, with which the content can be structured very well according to your own search terms (a kind of topic-specific timelines). The interaction with Lemmy also works well. There is an instance list for #Sharkey and #Iceshrimp instances here

In reality, we are caught somewhere between a kleptocracy (a government ruled by thieves) and a kakistocracy (a government run by unprincipled career politicians, corporations and thieves that panders to the worst vices in our nature and has little regard for the rights of American citizens).
For years now, the government has been playing a cat-and-mouse game with the American people, letting us enjoy just enough freedom to think we are free but not enough to actually allow us to live as a free people.
In other words, we’re allowed to bask in the illusion of freedom while we’re being stripped of the very rights intended to ensure that we can hold the government accountable to abiding by the rule of law, the U.S. Constitution.
This is no longer America, land of the free, where the government is of the people, by the people and for the people.
Rather, this is Amerika, where fascism, totalitarianism and militarism go hand in hand.
Freedom no longer means what it once did.
This holds true whether you’re talking about the right to criticize the government in word or deed, the right to be free from government surveillance, the right to not have your person or your property subjected to warrantless searches
by government agents, the right to due process, the right to be safe from militarized police invading your home, the right to be innocent until proven guilty and every other right that once reinforced the founders’ commitment to the American experiment in freedom.
Not only do we no longer have dominion over our bodies, our families, our property and our lives, but the government continues to chip away at what few rights we still have to speak freely and think for ourselves.
In reality, however, we are only as free as a government official may allow.
We only think we live in a constitutional republic, governed by just laws created for our benefit.
Truth be told, we live in a dictatorship disguised as a democracy where all that we own, all that we earn, all that we say and do—our very lives—depends on the benevolence of government
and corporate shareholders for whom profit and power will always trump principle. And now the government is litigating and legislating its way into a new framework where the dictates of petty bureaucrats carry greater weight than the inalienable rights of the citizenry.
With every court ruling that allows the government to operate above the rule of law, every piece of legislation that limits our freedoms, and every act of government wrongdoing that goes unpunished,
we’re slowly being conditioned to a society in which we have little real control over our lives.
As Rod Serling, creator of the Twilight Zone and an insightful commentator on human nature, once observed, “We’re developing a new citizenry. One that will be very selective about cereals and automobiles, but won’t be able to think.”
Indeed, not only are we developing a new citizenry incapable of thinking for themselves, but we’re also instilling in them a complete
and utter reliance on the government and its corporate partners to do everything for them—tell them what to eat, what to wear, how to think, what to believe, how long to sleep, who to vote for, whom to associate with, and on and on.
In this way, we have created a welfare state, a nanny state, a police state, a surveillance state, an electronic concentration camp—call it what you will, the meaning is the same:
in our quest for less personal responsibility, a greater sense of security, and no burdensome obligations to each other or to future generations, we have created a society in which we have no true freedom.
these are mile markers on the road to a fascist state where citizens are treated like cattle, to be branded and eventually led to the slaughterhouse.
Freedom, or what’s left of it, is being threatened from every direction.
The threats are of many kinds: political, cultural, educational, media, and psychological. However, as history shows us, freedom is not, on the whole, wrested from a citizenry. It is all too often given over voluntarily and for such a cheap price:
This is part and parcel of the propaganda churned out by the government machine.
That said, what we face today—mind manipulation and systemic violence—is not new. What is different are the techniques used and the large-scale control of mass humanity, coercive police tactics and pervasive surveillance.
We are overdue for a systemic check on the government’s overreaches and power grabs.
By “government,” I’m not referring to the highly partisan, two-party bureaucracy of Republicans and Democrats. Rather, I’m referring to “government” with a capital “G,” the entrenched Deep State that is unaffected by elections, unaltered by populist movements and has set itself beyond the reach of the law.
For years now, we have suffered the injustices, cruelties, corruption and abuse of an entrenched government bureaucracy that has no regard for the Constitution or the rights of the citizenry.
We have lingered too long in this strange twilight zone where ego trumps justice, propaganda perverts truth, and imperial presidents—empowered to indulge their authoritarian tendencies by legalistic courts, corrupt legislatures and a disinterested, distracted populace—rule by fiat rather than by the rule of law.
Where we find ourselves now is in the unenviable position of needing to rein in all three branches of government—the Executive, the Judicial, and the Legislative—
—that have exceeded their authority and grown drunk on power.
We are the unwitting victims of a system so corrupt that those who stand up for the rule of law and aspire to transparency in government are in the minority. This corruption is so vast it spans all branches of government.
The predators of the police state are wreaking havoc on our freedoms, our communities, and our lives. The government doesn’t listen to the citizenry, it refuses to abide by the Constitution,
which is our rule of law, and it treats the citizenry as a source of funding and little else.
The American kleptocracy has sucked the American people down a rabbit hole into a parallel universe in which the Constitution is meaningless, the government is all-powerful, and the citizenry is powerless to defend itself against government agents who steal, spy, lie, plunder, kill, abuse and generally inflict mayhem and sow madness on everyone and everything in their sphere.
This dissolution of that sacred covenant between the citizenry and the government—establishing “we the people” as the masters and the government as the servant—didn’t happen overnight. It didn’t happen because of one particular incident or one particular president. It is a process, one that began long ago and continues in the present day, aided and abetted by politicians who have mastered the polarizing art of how to “divide and conquer.”
Unfortunately, there is no magic spell to transport us back to a place and time where “we the people” weren’t merely fodder for a corporate gristmill, operated by government hired hands, whose priorities are money and power.
Our freedoms have become casualties in an all-out war on the American people.
Through every fault of our own—our apathy, our ignorance, our intolerance, our disinclination to do the hard work of holding government leaders accountable to the rule of law,
our inclination to let politics trump longstanding constitutional principles—we have been reduced to this sorry state in which we are little more than shackled inmates in a prison operated for the profit of a corporate elite.
If we continue down this road, there can be no surprise about what awaits us at the end.
For there to be any hope of real change, we must change how we think about ourselves, our fellow human beings, freedom, society, and the government.
The following principles may help any budding freedom fighters in the struggle to liberate themselves and our society.
First, we must come to grips with the reality that the present system does not foster freedom. The government’s primary purpose is maintaining power and control. It’s an oligarchy composed of corporate giants wedded to government officials who benefit from the relationship. In other words, it is motivated by greed and exists to perpetuate itself.
Second, voting is no guarantee of liberty. Voting is a way to keep the citizenry pacified. That’s why the government places so much emphasis on the reassurance ritual of voting. It provides the illusion of participation while maintaining the status quo. As Jordan Michael Smith, writing for the Boston Globe, concludes about the American government, “There’s the one we elect, and then there’s the one behind it, steering huge swaths of policy almost unchecked.
Elected officials end up serving as mere cover for the real decisions made by the bureaucracy.”
Third, question everything. Don’t assume anything the government does is for the good of the citizenry. As James Madison warned, “All men having power ought to be distrusted to a certain degree.” Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Fourth, there is little hope for any true resistance if you are mindlessly connected to the electronic concentration camp.
Remember, what you’re being electronically fed by those in power is meant to pacify, distract, and control you.
Fifth, be wise and realize that there is power in numbers. Networks, coalitions, and movements can accomplish much—especially if their objectives are focused, practical and nonviolent—and they are very much feared by government authorities.
Sixth, as always, change must start with “we the people.”
I’ve always advised people to think nationally but act locally. Yet it can be hard to make a difference locally when the local government is as deaf, dumb and blind to the needs of its constituents as the national government.
Seventh, local towns, cities and states can nullify or say “no” to federal laws that violate the rights and freedoms of the citizenry. When and if you see such federal laws passed, gather your coalition of citizens and demand that your local town council nullify such laws.
If enough towns and cities across the country would speak truth to power in this way, we might see some positive movement from the federal governmental machine.
Clearly, it’s time to clean house at all levels of government.
We have been saddled with the wreckage of a government at all levels that no longer represents the citizenry, serves the citizenry, or is accountable to the citizenry.
It doesn’t matter whether you’re talking about the federal government, state governments, or local governing bodies: at all ends of the spectrum and every point in between, a shift has taken place.
“We the people” are not being seen, heard or valued.
We no longer count for much of anything beyond an occasional electoral vote and as a source of income for the government’s ever-burgeoning financial needs.
Everything happening at the national level is playing out at the local level, as well: the violence, the militarization, the intolerance, the lopsided governance, and an uneasy awareness that the citizenry have no say in how their communities are being governed.
You’ve got a better chance of making your displeasure seen and felt and heard within your own community. But it will take perseverance and unity and a commitment to finding common ground with your fellow citizens.
As I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, we’re making it way too easy for the police state to take over.
So, stop being an accessory to the murder of the American republic.

I just learned that argv being const is not standard, because according to the spec it's supposed to be modifiable?
Why you'd modify your program arguments at runtime I have no idea, but hey, if that's the way it is, then that's the way it is.
With this extra context, what's now baffling to me is why I've had it as const char*[] for 16 months (hell, probably even longer than that. If I looked at Acronia's code, I bet it's const there too), and GCC has never once complained.
This is probably a no-brainer to every programmer who's better than me (i.e. literally everybody), but I'm self-taught with no education and wouldn't know an algorithm from a ham sandwich. I'm lucky my game even works.
...how would you even do it? How *would* arguments be modified at run time by a user? The only thing I can think of is some absurdly intelligent system that will watch for a second instance of the same thing being run and then somehow pass arguments from that new instance onto the old one instead ?
Thought I'd do a separate post about the new add-on I made for customizing my Bookface scheme for Friendica's "Frio" theme. Once a server admin has installed and activated it for users it would appear under Main Menu > Settings > Addons > Bookface Customizations:
The original intention of using CSS variables was to allow easy localization of the pseudo-element text labels to other languages, and let you customize more than just the "accent color" for the theme.
Only the entries you change are included in the override stylesheet added to the site. If you leave an entry blank it will not be included.
There is no validation for what you enter in the text fields to check that it is in correct format or is usable. For colors any valid CSS color declaration should work (color names, hex codes, rgb, rgba, color-mix work but gradients and images do not. You should be able to enter any Unicode text in the label variables, just be careful to escape single quotes/apostrophes with a backslash.
There is nothing to prevent you from making color combinations that will render an unusable interface. There is also nothing to prevent you from making a really, really ugly user interface, but you're the only one who will have to look at it.
This add-on's color options do not work well with "Bookface Auto" since it will automatically pick Light Mode or Dark Mode based on the device settings. It's really hard to find color combos that will work equally well in both modes. But, again, there's nothing to stop you from trying. It doesn't detect which of the Bookface schemes you've enabled.
Lastly, make sure you tick the "Enable Customizations" checkbox at the top to apply your custom settings. That checkbox gives you an easy way to turn them off and on.
Also be aware these settings, being stored on the server in your account preferences, will be applied regardless of what browser or device you use to access your account.

The Zen Postbox add-on has been updated to version 1.3
This fixes an issue where the postbox styling was not shown sitewide or when users were not logged into the server. Now if either of the add-ons is enabled the postboxes should be shown on that server everywhere, even to users who are not logged in.
The add-ons have also been updated to make sure they work with the 2025.7 Release Candidate development version.
Again, the difference between Postbox and Zen Postbox is the first one only includes the stylesheet to show them. You have to manually add the BBcode to your posts. The "Zen" one adds a button to the Compose modal to let you pick from a list and automatically adds the BBcode to your post.

2. check that the permissions for that folder and the sub-folders are correct.
3. Lastly, you will likely have to go into Main Menu > Admin > Addons and disable and re-enable the Zen Postbox addon to get the new "head" hook to register.
4. Open Compose and press the rainbow background button. If you can see the thumbnails for the animated ones you're good. If the last 11 boxes are empty check everything again. If this fix worked you'll see all the thumbnails, and if you add one of the animated ones to your post draft and Preview it you should see the background in the preview.
This does not affect the "Postbox" addon. In Bookface this only affects the animated backgrounds because they are not included in Bookface while the rest of them are.

Yep! My guess is addon stuff gets cached somewhere somehow. Sometimes on my Dev Server the only way to get my edits to addons to work is to disable and re-enable them.
@Alt Pygoscelis Papua @Kevin If you mean editing templates, then your cache at /view/smarty3/compiled/ need to be purged. Just delete all xx directories in it. And please don't forget to run ./bin/composer.phar install on your development system and with --no-dev on your server. Plus you want to truncate the table hooks which contains "cached" addon call-back data: TRUNCATE TABLE `hook`. If your addon has own configuration tables, then you maybe want to delete their entries in config, too.
And which cache driver have you configured? REDIS?
My Dev Server is actually offline running Friendica in XAMPP filled with fake test accounts and dummy content. I hadn't realized all those files in /view/smarty3/compiled/ were cache files, good to know!
@Alt Pygoscelis Papua @Kevin It is a bit strange that the cache isn't automatically cleared when a corresponding template has been changed. Friendica's own Smarty3 class can be found at src/Render/FriendicaSmarty and seem to rely on the default behavior of how Smarty handles updating its cache. I need to investigate this mater further.
@Kevin @Alt Pygoscelis Papua Hmm, Friendica's code handles over single configuration options to it's own FriendicaSmarty::__construct() constructor while it could use there DI::config()->get('foo', 'bar'); directly avoiding longer parameter lists?
This update has a LOT of changes and fixes in it! I think I got in everything everyone who gave me feedback asked for (check the README file "Changelog" section for details). Lots of attention paid to making buttons, tabs, and drop-down appearance consistent, and lots of new CSS variables for customization plus a new option for customizing Bookface (more on that in a moment).
Bookface 1.8 has been tested with both the current stable 2024.12 and 2025.7 Release Candidate versions.

If multiple people engaged with the post in a certain way you no longer have to click the count to see the list, it's a popover that appears on hover (active on touch devices). This is a lot cleaner and more consistent with how these are displayed on other social media platforms.
You'll also notice that the Main Menu missing icons are in place. This is a change that's coming in the next Friendica release anyway, but Bookface lets you have it right now:

I didn't turn it on by default, but nav button labels are now coded into Bookface and if you're using CSS variable customization they're easy to turn on:

The label text is also customizable. Until now the only way to implement such customizations was either for a server admin to manually put them into the header or footer sitewide or for individual users to put them in a user content stylesheet just for your web browser. That's why I'm also releasing a new Friendica addon called "Bookface Custom" that, if your server admin installs it, allows you to customized every one of the Bookface CSS variables to your heart's content.
Oh, and it's a little thing, but if you did bother to go the trouble of self-verifying your account I restyled the "verified checkmark" in the profile aside 😉:

Yes, I was concerned about that but couldn't come up with a decent solution to prevent it. I thought about using negative margins and padding to swap the positions of the Action Buttons and Responses, but making that work across all screen sizes and for both regular posts and event posts is tricky. The popup list would still be triggered by a mouseover but at least it wouldn't cover the Action Button. I'll keep playing with it and see if I can get it to work consistently. I can always revert it to the way it was in a future release if this turns out to be too much of a usability issue.
Main branch updated to 1.8.1 to fix "Notices" navbar label not using CSS variable. Not an issue for anyone who isn't using Navbar Labels, which are not enabled by default.
If you don't want to wait for the next release the Main branch should always be the most current as people point out things to me and I fix them on GitLab (which should automatically get mirrored to the GitHub repo).

On my desktops, this double navigation takes way more space than in other themes. Would it be possible, for smaller displays, to somehow merge them into one menu line, or does that require more in-depth changes?
I agree that it does take up a lot of space, because I made the icons larger and added more white space for a cleaner, more modern look. Everything in Frio is too tiny and compact and cluttered. It doesn't help that Friendica just has a LOT of controls. Too many IMO. It's kind of overwhelming to new users.
For smaller displays when you get below 768 pixels wide it engages the mobile interface. There's some overlap between desktop and tablet landscape making it impossible to discern which it is, and for most tablets in portrait I chose to display a compact version of the desktop bars to keep the position of controls consistent if you change tablet orientation.
It is technically possible to merge the two bars into one (actually make them 50% screen width and positioned seamlessly side-by-side) for really wide screens, but there's just too much stuff there to do that for a smaller screen. And the sub-section words in the second toolbar can be really short in some languages or really long in others.
You could try zooming in until the mobile interface kicks in. Though it doesn't really save that much space as there are still two toolbars, they just aren't both at the top.
