About 20 years ago, I saw an excellent rock. It was unusual, so I took a photo. But I couldn’t find the photo shortly afterwards and thought I’d deleted it by mistake. I was sad. I kept describing the rock to people, but they were strangely uninterested. I am clearing out my photo archive and I just found it. I am happy. I missed this rock. I thought of it often. Anyone has some funny / weird examples of products you don't expect to have chips / or that have no useful reason to have chips--but still do? Or examples of really throwaway electronics such as vapes?

Hidden e-waste is also in every web search and every usage of AI tools: data centers, server farms and cloud services have not only high energy consumption but also produce a lot of electronic waste, as the hardware is regularly upgraded. That's hidden/outsourced #ewaste we probably don't often think about.
I was given a pen with a big red ball on the top, that, when shaken or hit, makes some blinking light. Electronics AND battery, totally useless, absurd and absolutely out of place in our collapsing world. The 'Wifi kettle' is my go-to example of how stupid and wasteful everything got. It not only requires unnecessary electronics and energy, but it makes no sense. You still have to walk right up to the kettle to pick it up and fill it and to use it. Connecting it to the Internet provides no usefulness. At least the Teasmades of the 70s had an actual function.

I remember reading a story I can no longer find from someone who was looking for an Apple cable while traveling, and the ones they found were surprisingly cheap but all of them said you needed to have Bluetooth on, which made no sense for a cable.

It turns out the Apple licensing fee for their proprietary connector costs more than a Bluetooth chip, so these cables all had USB at one end and a Bluetooth chip embedded in the wire, with a dummy Apple plug that wasn't wired!
Do batteries count? So many things that don't need them have rechargeable batteries now. People must spend more effort recharging than they would 'doing the thing' manually.

You could go to a website and download a label to ship it back for "recycling". Which i was 50/50 on if we were shipping back so it could be thrown away out of sight.

Someone gave me a real estate ad they received in the mail. It was by a very expensive home builder, and it was a "card" that came in a fancy little box. Like John Deere tractors, many defibrillator accessories (i.e. paddles) have proprietary ID chips which only work with that mfrs device. When the product line is obsoleted, all those accessories go with it.
