One underlying theme of all rewards and punishments is power: They're used by those who have it to control those who don't. But a less obvious premise is mistrust: To rely on bribes or threats is to assume the recipients will respond only to extrinsic inducements.

Defenders of behavior control in schools also tend to demand direct, explicit instruction - maybe b/c that, too, is rooted in distrust - in this case, of kids as learners. This sour cynicism is then rationalized as being "realistic."

@MissusTruth__1776 Terrible weather. In quite a few places, they've had 100-year storms. I think by the end of August we'll get our dry season for a couple of months. My dog was freaking out. He's not normally afraid, but it wasn't our usual-type storm. He actually let us put noise-cancelling headphones on him, lol. There was no front behind it. It just sat there.

No words.

WARNING: #GOOGLE IS TRYING TO TRICK YOU INTO USING GEMINI AI AND FEEDING GEMINI YOUR DATA IN GMAIL AND OTHER APPS!

What Google is now doing should be ILLEGAL. PERIOD. For the first time I can recall in history of using Gmail, it just now popped a modal dialogue box -- DEMANDING that I choose whether or not I wanted "Smart Features" turned on -- which when you read the verbiage mostly means goddamned Gemini AI AND if you enable this you're giving Google permission to use your data to "improve" this horrifically invasive, inept, and misinformation spewing tech that steals data from websites for its own use without permission of those sites. DON'T LET IT SUCK IN YOUR EMAIL AS WELL!

There was no way I could find to exit the modal window without choosing YES or NO, which means my existing selection to NOT use Gmail Smart Features (long my preference) was NOT being honored. After saying NO to this disgusting query by Google, I was pushed to ANOTHER page where I was forced to choose again about "smart features" in "other" Google apps. I chose NO again and finally was permitted to escape this trap.

Note that while you can fairly easily check to make sure "smart features" are turned off in Gmail settings, I offhand don't have a clue as to how to find the similar settings in other Google apps that may have been affected by this absolutely disrespectful forced dialogue, as Google keeps trying to ram Gemini AI down our throats.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! Google has become a DISGRACE.

Gabapentin is a shitty drug. Hmmm...perhaps we need off-label demotion since using it increases dementia risk. Pfizer executives have lied and committed fraud over this shitty drug for decades.

@f800gecko Thing is, it's probably the OTHER meds helping with your pain. The Pfizer team was convicted of not just off-label promotion but outright fraud (Saris decision). The data suggest little or no benefit for discogenic pain. If you wish to stop, speak to your physician--you do not want to cold turkey a stop.

Due to the brilliance of the central quasar, the surrounding galaxy is outshone by it and hence is not visible from Earth. With an absolute magnitude of −30.7, it shines with a luminosity of 4×1040 watts, or as brilliantly as 140 trillion times that of the Sun, making it one of the brightest objects in the known Universe.[1]

Symbian. No T on the end.

All right, fair point. (Although my mum is nearly 90 and has an appless phone, so it's not one-size-fits-all.)

But the thing is that you said:

"A good OS incompatible with needed apps... isn't valid for an practical use."

I am guessing you mean "any". I gave you a valid use. OSes with no apps can be entirely useful, yes.

For instance, you also said "and security soft". If something can't run external apps then it can't run malware either, so no _security software_ is needed. I do not _want_ apps on my router, or on my storage server, or on my ebook reader!

The obsession with apps is a recent thing and it's everywhere. It's a red herring. Not everything needs apps, even including computing devices, and often, providing the ability to run external software is harmful and insecure.

in reply to Liam Proven

@matrix, agree with this statement, as I said before, for a lot of people Symbian is a pretty good alternative, but not for all because mencioned reasons, eg. also profesionals which have to work with company or specific apps.

Luckily there are also pretty good FOSS alternatives out there which are also compatible with needed apps.

Compatibility is always an important reason for a lot of users.

Yes, in my case I also can try to make a call for an appointment, but it's often impossible due of the office hours, presence of the nurse, because heavy traffic in the hospital and others, apart the need to pass always all the ID data, security number and other, because of this the social security intriduced the app some years ago.

The app connect direct with the calendar of the doctor, selecting a free zone, marking day and hour 24/7 with your registred data, even putting an alarm in your calendar, thing of half a minute and few clicks and aliviate a lot the work of the hospital personal, which is hard enough.

The Workers' Dreadnought (Vol. 09 No. 15 - 24 June 1922)
libcom.org/article/workers-dre…

Stamatopoulou-Robbins estimates that as many as 67,000 #Gazans may have died of starvation since the start of the war, and that over 10,000 more may not have been counted in the death toll because they are still buried in the rubble caused by #US.-supplied aircraft and bombs. This pushes the number of people killed in the war to well over 100,000, with, sadly, more to come as disease increases in a population bereft of adequate clean water, sanitation, or access to medical care. If the bombing in #Gaza stopped tomorrow, deaths caused by the conflict would continue for some time given the awful conditions people are being forced to live in.
Due to its ongoing role in financing and arming Israel, the United States has more leverage over Israel’s conduct than any other nation, if Washington is willing to use it. It’s possible that #Netanyahu would try to carry on in any case, but without access to U.S. funds, weapons, and logistical and maintenance support his military reach would be more limited, and his ability to spark a regional war would be stymied.
How can any U.S. official speak of the “rules-based international order” with a straight face given Washington’s enabling of the Gaza war? How can Washington press other nations to end systematic abuses of human rights? forbes.com/sites/williamhartun…
in reply to Proletarian Rage

The Costs of #War #Project researchers estimate the cost to #US taxpayers at over $17.9 billion, and the likely number of people killed at well over 100,000 — which, even then, is a “very conservative, minimum amount of death.” As researchers begin to calculate the costs, the human and monetary toll is starting to become clearer.
“With only marginal exceptions, every single person in #Gaza is sick, injured, or both,” the physicians wrote to #Biden. “We worry that unknown thousands have already died from the lethal combination of malnutrition and disease, and that tens of thousands more will die in the coming months, especially with the onset of the winter rains in Gaza. Most of them will be young children.”
Still, factors like the destruction of water infrastructure and sanitary facilities mean the real loss may be incalculable for years to come. Savell said that the numbers used here are a “really solid, conservative minimum number of deaths.”
Given the depletion of Gaza’s medical system, thousands more have likely died due to lack of care for their chronic illnesses. (Cancer care, for example, has been unavailable in Gaza, as has most prenatal care. “A big portion of death tolls from war comes in deaths of newborns, and pregnant mothers,” Savell said. #WarCrimes

Vigil: ESA’s space weather reporter in deep space

image

Video: 00:01:51

Space weather ‘reporter’ Vigil will be the world’s first space weather mission to be permanently positioned at Lagrange point 5, a unique vantage point that allows us to see solar activity days before it reaches Earth. ESA’s Vigil mission will be a dedicated operational space weather mission, sending data 24/7 from deep space.

Vigil’s tools as a space weather reporter at its unique location in deep space will drastically improve forecasting abilities. From there, Vigil can see ‘around the corner’ of the Sun and observe activity on the surface of the Sun days before it rotates into view from Earth. It can also watch the Sun-Earth line side-on, giving an earlier and clearer picture of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) heading toward Earth.

Radiation, plasma and particles flung towards Earth by the Sun can pose a very real risk to critical infrastructure our society relies on. This includes satellites for navigation, communications and banking services as well as power grids and radio communication on the ground.

A report by Lloyd’s of London estimates that a severe space weather event, caused by such an outburst of solar activity, could cost the global economy 2.4 trillion dollars over five years.

ESA’s response to this growing threat is Vigil, a cornerstone mission of the Agency’s Space Safety Programme, planned for launch in 2031. Vigil’s data will give us drastically improved early warnings and forecasts, which in turn help protect satellites, astronauts and critical infrastructure on the ground that we all depend on.
