@teknomunk .... vlc supports streaming. vlc also supports capturing webcam (and probably mic?) Does vlc support "reverse streaming"? ie. run it in a listen mode where anyone can connect to it and feed content. That's probably all it needs to be a complete videoconferencing tool.

@teknomunk To clarify, I started with the thought that videoconf server is relatively straightforward; really all any server needs to do is manage connect, disconnect and message. It is only the client that is complex, so I wondered if I could write a server to handle some existing program, and I thought about vlc. But then I thought about just using vlc at every step of the way, it occurs to me that if the server is custom, you can trigger it so that when it receives a connection, it makes a connection back to that address on some predefined port. So first you run an instance of vlc that captures your input and offers a stream on that port (which does appear to be possible, though I'm not sure how), then run the second one with a gui to receive from the server, as soon as it connects the server hooks up your output. This, however, requires you to be able to forward ports... But it is possible.

@teknomunk Oh actually I just realised I've been being retarded. Video data would need to be mixed into some sort of reasonable grid. That's going to be over half of the server's complexity. ...There's probably an ffmpeg one-liner for it.
@Zerglingman @teknomunk surprisingly it doesn't use ffmpeg either- it has a clever low cost way of fowarding streams but also is able to reduce the resolution. not sure if it just directs the client to do so or does that in the server somehow.

I have a mechanic friend who has stopped working on cars built from 1981 to 1995 (except Chevy trucks) because he can't get quality parts. Also turning away all Euro built cars and any high end American brand cars - any build year for the same reason. He's still very busy because people aren't trading in their 5+ year old cars - since new car prices are utterly ridiculous.

An (in)famous (because I've heard GM is scrubbing any online complaints of this) example is traction control goes haywire on the Buick Encore causing a "limp mode" scenario. My buddy found that the problem can be caused by a sensor that detects abnormal vibrations in the engine - in the case he was working on, it was caused by burnt rings on one cylinder (stupid cheap motor). He replaced the piston, and the traction control/ limp mode went away.

One of my cats, sometimes both, like to sleep with me. When they sleep next to me that is fine but the heavier of the two, a 14lb tomcat likes to climb upon my back and sleep after I've gone to sleep. For some reason inevitably when he does that it induces bad nightmares. I just had one in which an evil doctor was trying to inject me with chemical infusions and I'm all tied up on a bed and he's trying to stick needles in me attached to tubing attached to chemical pumps, and I'm all tangled up in the tubing and fighting the needles out of the doctors hands and trying to inject him.
