The first software was called Laconica.
The first instance was Identica.
The first prototol was OpenMicroBlogging.
The first label/name was Identiverse social network.
The network never went down. From the first protocol, OpenMicroBlogging, it switched to the protocol OStatus (also by Evan), then to ActivityPub as most know it today. It's exactly the same social network since 2008!

Lastly, the first approaches were through tech that existing networks were encouraged to implement. For example, few people remember the "Open Social" set of technologies. The SNS platforms who applied Open Social were Hi5 and Google+ to mention two.
In addition, before the #Bluesky "Open Social"—to promote #ATproto —there already was an #OpenSocial. Before the current Social Web came to be, the label was already being used in the early 2000s for similar purposes but larger and more inclusive.

I think you've retconned a little bit here. LeWeb3 was named as a sequel to the previous conference which was called LeBlogs2. Remember, at that time Web 2.0 hadn't really taken off yet - browsers had only just implemented the XMLHTTPRequest API - so it wouldn't have made sense to already be talking about Web 3.0.
Laconica was renamed to StatusNet. Then later when Evan started working on PumpIO, he agreed to have it transferred to GNU. GNU then later merged StatusNet with another project and called it GNU Social.
There are still GNU Social instances around, but they are still running on the OStatus protocol. IIRC, there was work to implement ActivityPub in it but it seems it wasn't finished. Other than that, GNU Social instances are still around.
You say that but, everything I ever posted on identica (and also on Evan's later OStatus site Status.Net, which i was a paying customer of) went 404 just a few years later. 😢
When StatusNet shut down I was offered a MySQL dump, which is better than nothing for personal archival but not actually useful for setting up a new instance due to OStatus having DNS-based identity and lacking any concept for migrating to a new domain.

imo the deletion of most of the content in the proto-fediverse (PubSubHubbubiverse? 😂) was an enormous loss; I and many other people had years of great discussions on these sites which I wish we could revisit today.

The fact that ActivityPub now is still a thing where people must (be a sysadmin or) pick someone else's domain to marry their online identity to is even more sad. ActivityPub desperately needs to become content addressable and decouple identity from other responsibilities. This experiment (which i learned of via this post) from six years ago seemed like a huge step in the right direction, but I don't know if anyone is really working on solving these problems currently. 😢

I'm trying to recreate an install of pinchflat in a podman container that was working on a previous install, but now I want it to run as its own user. I created the quadlet and put it at /home/pinchflat/.config/containers/systemd/pinchflat.container but the user I'm creating this for is a system user without a shell. So I cannot just su into it or sudo -u the command systemctl --user daemon-reload. I'm not really understanding where I'm going wrong.
So I found I had 2 problems. First, I have a Name= line instead of a ContainerName= line in there. Second, diagnosing all this is impossible when theres no shell for that account. Turn on a shell (/bin/bash) for the user, fix this thing, activate it, disable the shell (/bin/nologin), drink heavily.

Macrobloging services are message systems that allow long form posts similar in format to Facebook. These allow for works of fiction, poetry, technical papers, news items, short stories, and more. These formats are most useful for discussion of social issues.
Microbloging services allow only short form posts similar in format to Twitter. While you can link to larger articles elsewhere, you have a relatively short character limit and so can not post them directly.
Censorship, is handled much different on the fediverse than on mainstream media like Twitter or Facebook. On the fediverse, each individual instance is responsible for content available on that instance, but does not censor the rest of the network. Thus if you find the rules of one instance too constraining you can move to another.
Federated search engines are analogous to federated message systems in that each instance chooses what portion of the internet it wants to crawl. When you enter a search term, the local instance queries all of the federated instances, collates and sorts the results and presents them to you. As with messages, each instance can have it’s own censorship policies but no one instance can censor the entire network.
Given the wild-west nature of the fediverse, it is probably not suitable for children under 14, and you’re guaranteed to find some material that will offend virtually everyone. With federated search engines, material that is inappropriate will usually be flagged sensitive or nsfw (not safe for work) so as long as you don’t expand material marked as such, you can avoid this sort of material. There are occasionally people who violate these rules, we do our best to remove such individuals none the less some will get through.

Also, it is able to federate with all other federated message systems which use ActivityPub protocol and also we have extensions that allow it to speak to several other networks via other protocols.
Hubzilla.Eskimo.Com Hubzilla is similar in message format to Friendica in that it allows long posts. However, it specializes in it’s ability to provide connectivity to multiple protocols and so we include it in our mix of federated services primarily for the better connectivity it offers. Hubzilla provides a great deal of interoperability between many networks though ActivityPub is still it’s primary protocol. Hubzilla gives you a greater degree of control over privacy than some of the other networks. You can create private channels that are served between hubzilla instances and other compatible instances.
Mastodon.Eskimo.Com Mastodon is first and foremost an alternative to Twitter. While Twitter has Tweets, Mastodon has Toots. The format is very similar. Mastodon toots have a limit of 500 characters. Similar to the short limit of Twitter. This is why this platform is referred to as a Microbloging format. Mastodon interacts with other ActivityPub instances however when a long form blog post from another instance arrives, you are only shown a short portion with a link to follow to see the full post on the originating site.
NextCloud.Eskimo.Com If you are a customer of Eskimo North, your login credentials will work without a domain extension to access Nextcloud. If you are not a customer you can apply for a Nextcloud account using your choice of login and password, in this case the login should include your originating network. TOKYO (Sputnik) - NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has recently visited Tokyo. The purpose of the visit was to strengthen cooperation in the field of industry and technology, and the unification of military-technical standards.

Re unfixed security issues, Is microsoft office any better? I'm no expert but I doubt it.
And Office is a $129.99 a year subscription right. I'm not sure unfixed security issues is a fair yardstick in this market segment. Maybe just use libreoffice in a vm with no network interface. It'll be a cold day in hell before I send Msft money for an office subscription.
Sorry I forget sometimes. It’s just that OpenOffice is a way better name. “Libre” is a pretty uncommon word in English and LibreOffice sounds like astrology software.
OnlyOffice is good too if you prefer an interface that is more like modern MS Office. LibreOffice is more like 2000s MS Office, so pick the one you prefer.
It is pretty much the same as 20 years ago. That is, good enough for basic use cases but nowhere near as complete as MS Office. It isn't a serious program for professional use.
Tbh I get them mixed up every time I talk about them. I don't know what's installed on my computers and I will most likely get them mixed up again in the future. I look it up every time but also forget it just as often.
I got the same issue with OpenCloud and NextCloud.
It has a nice ribbon UI like MS Office! Unfortunately it is super hidden as you first need to enable experimental settings before you can switch it on.
Have you actually tried LibreOffice in a while? The Ribbon UI hasn't been experimental since LibreOffice 6.2, which was released in February 2019. It is a normal option, called Tabbed, in the User Interface settings under View > User Interface.
The date seems to be misleading. When you open the comments section and load all comments, you'll see that there are quite a few comments that are 9 years old. The article is thus far older than what it's saying, and it unfortunately showcases again how many people rely on very old (and in this case misleading) information about LibreOffice.
