More of a thought exercise/game than anything else. I saw the news that 486 support was getting cut from linux, and I was curious just how cheaply someone could replace a desktop 486 system with something new (provided the device had all the connectivity they needed).
Rules:
Device must be able to run linux.
Device should be cheap as possible. A good starting point is probably sub 40usd.
The device must in someway support a mouse, keyboard, display, and the internet. If adapters are necessary for this connectivity, that cost should be included.
Power supply should be included in the cost of the device. (in the case of most SBCs this is just the cost of a USB cable and wall wart)
The device must be new & still in production. I know used devices like laptops would probably have been king here, but I don't think that would be nearly as interesting.
I suspect that SBCs and other arm devices will be the most common suggestions.
I personally know about the Raspberry Pi Zero which can be had for ~$10, and with all the added accessories necessary to make it a full computer (usb splitters, usb power, usb to rj45, storage) it costs around ~$35. Not bad at all but I'm pretty sure we can do even better!
I believe I saw some other single board computers with some cheap Rockchip CPU /Allwinner and regular HDMI and two USB and an Ethernet port for around $10 on Aliexpress. You wouldn't need the adapters from the Pi Zero with those. And there are some generic Android TV-Boxes for $8-15...
I have a bunch of old macs here with different distros onthem, mostly Mint, that I have been trying to give away (without being obligated to provide support, which is the stickler apparently). They all run great. 0$.

Why must the device be new and still in production? The current devices that are currently in production/new both at that price point (sub 40$) and more expensive (up to 3000$) are consumer grade garbage that will last at most 2 years. They're not repairable, not durable, not built well etc. I personally use a GNU booted Thinkpad X200T /T500 and a GNU booted ASUS KMCA-D8- both running Parabola GNU+Linux-Libre splendisly with the proprietary wifi-card replaced. The cost of the X200T was about 30$ and the T500 was about 20$. I understand that you might not care as much of freedom to get either the X200, X200T, T400, T400s, or T500, but it is important to understand that most of the operating system components you are runnning were made with freedom in mind. If you still don't want to sacrifice performance for a cheap, libre experience, then just get a newer Thinkpad. It's not as libre, but they still could be found (more easily) for very cheap prices. But keep in mind the newer you get the shittier it's going to be. I still suggest the models I reffered to though- esspecially if you want to tinker. You can remove about every component and replace it, and you can replace the BIOS with a fully free bios (GNU Boot).
By the way, most operating system distributions based on Linux as kernel are basically modified versions of the GNU operating system. Richard M Stallman and contributers began developing GNU in 1984, years before Linus Torvalds started to write his kernel. Their goal was to develop a complete free operating system. Of course, they did not develop all the parts themselves—but they led the way. They developed most of the central components, forming the largest single contribution to the whole system. No, I just buy a new lenovo 9 cell battery. I use my X200T for creativity stuff (reading/writing/drawing) and use my T500 for portable more intense work like programming that I would do on the ASUS KMCA-D8 when I'm on the go. I get about 5-12 hours on my X200T and 3-10 hours on my T500, but I do carry a docking station with me, so I can always just recharge easily, but I usually don't use it since the 5-10 hours is more than enough for school bus rides and I don't usually program in a place without a charging outlet nearby. Btw it's important to note that my computer is very minimal since I use parabola open rc edition with dwm to boot emacs, libreoffice draw, and icecat, so if you have a bloated setup then ofcourse the battery life will differ.
Stop looking for cheap new stuff. Buy cheap used stuff. I got a high quality Thinkpad T530 for $99. I got a T15 Gen 1 as well but honestly is worse than the T530 even though it's newer.

I'm kind of shocked that it's only been 18 years since the last 486 chip was made. It was launched in 1989 and discontinued in 2008, while the original Pentium was launched in 1993 and discontinued in 1999. Hell, the Pentium 4 was discontinued in 2007.
Yup. Airplanes, for example, take a lot of validation. It's extremely expensive to retest a new configuration, so they make one computer, get it validated, and use it unmodified for the next thirty years.
This is why the Boeing Max 8 thing was a big deal. They made approved modifications, but found in rare conditions it could cause unexpected and dangerous flight conditions. But, a times b times c was estimated to be less than the cost of doing it properly, so they didn't.
Same with industrial automation. There's some robotic arms, assembly lines, etc in use today that still use PCs with ISA slots - the predecessor to PCI, which was the predecessor to PCIe. Old 16-bit bus with a max speed of around 5Mbps. That's why you'll occasionally see newish "industrial" motherboards that have ISA slots and parallel ports.
A project I worked on at university (way back in 2010) was for one of the largest providers of air traffic control systems. Our project was interesting - overlaying eye tracking data from Tobii eye trackers they provided (thousands of dollars each at the time) on top of screen recordings taken via VNC, for training of air traffic controllers.
It was even more interesting to learn about some of their processes, though. Whenever they built an ATC computer system for a client, they'd build one or two spares at the same time, with exactly identical hardware. They did this for two reasons:
If the hardware breaks down, they can supply a new system that exactly matches the hardware that was verified.
If a client has an issue with their system, they can try and replicate the issue on a clone of that client's system.
We got to see a storage room with a large number of these systems. Lots of different PCs anywhere from a month to maybe 15 years old. 😀
Actually, most devices today run an amd64 kernel (amd or intel cpus in typical desktops or servers) or arm (phones, some modern notebooks). Those architectures never supported 486 cpus.
I assume, the code removed is in the x86 branch, excluded when compiling for other architectures. As others said, I guess this is mostly about maintainance effort and testing.
(But then i don't know much about the kernels. Maybe there's some interplay between amd64 and ~~x64~~ x86 architectures.)

toyo proxes are what i generally use and they're a lot more solid. i have never had a flat tire with those. they're not too pricey either.
i have 2 remaining good delente brand tires that actually feel pretty solid. it's a cheaper brand but they're not bad. so i'll run those in the back and i guess i have to buy 2 new toyos for the front

I've been trying to figure out the Ardour DAW. Found a load of tutorials but they all look completely different to how my version looks.
I am completely baffled. Nothing seems laid out right to my eyes, and its borderline giving me a bleedin' migraine. I'm starting to see why so few use this, even though its essentially free to use on Linux etc.
@PaulDavisTheFirst I was trying to create a clip to then loop so I could pencil in some notes on a midi/VST style instrument. I managed to create themidi track but couldnt create a short clip. I then tried to just "record" it but it didnt do anything (Ableton has spoiled me, LOL)
I also find the onscreen grid that seems default gives my eyes a wobble. I need to figure out how to change that if I can.
I'm not saying its a bad program, just the layout is confusing me right now.

Paul and Robin are always there to help. but in the event that they're busy, feel free to tag me, comrade. re: recording nothing. you must make sure the track you wish to record to is "armed". so either in the mixer or timeline/editor you want to click the record button *for that specific track*. since its a MIDI track, you'll also have to make sure the track is listening to the correct midi channels. oh also... is the piano roll actually empty? you may have recorded midi but if you dont add a midi instrument to that track, there will be no audio played back. i dont have ardour installed on the laptop im using atm, but when i get home I'll try to put together a quick guide for you.

By default, Ardour always records and plays back all MIDI channels on a track. We differ in that respect from a number of other DAWs where you do indeed have to "make sure the track is listening to the correct MIDI channels".

I’m heading back to Mountlake Terrace, and I decide to get dinner. Chipotle sounds reasonable, so I get a chicken burrito and a soft drink, figuring it would be good sources of protein for a post-orchi healing body.
I’m about to pay when a “mom” looking women tells the clerk “I’m paying for her meal”. I look over, and I have no idea who she is, but I say “Are you sure? Why thank you very much!” She smiles and wishes me a good evening.
So I get my Diet Coke, and sit down and the woman comes up and says “excuse me for a minute?” I figure she just paid my dinner, so I say thank you again and no problem.
She looks at me, and goes “I have a teenage daughter just like you.”.
Oh?
I notice the “Protect Trans Kids” pin on her jacket.
OH!!!
I smile and say “You must be very proud of her then”.
She smiles and says “you give me hope. I am so scared for her right now, but I can see her at your age right now, and that helps me.”

One of my SILs recently died of a rare brain cancer after 2 Pfizer jabs & 1 booster. Another SIL told me earlier tonight that she was just diagnosed with Mystemia Gravis which is a chronic autoimmune disorder. She's jabbed too.
