If you still had some doubts that Israel in its current incarnation is run by a bunch of over-charged genocidal Nazis who don’t even bother to hide it, it’s time to revise your doubts.

Blocking all aid to the enclave as a way to “reduce obesity” is something worth of the worst Nazi executioner operating the worst concentration camp.

Wondering why they don’t try to also block food supplies to their own people as a way to reduce obesity.

No matter how this war ends up, Netanyahu and his entourage will forever be remembered by history as the worst incarnation of Nazi ideology in the 21st century.

Providing all military support to the Palestinian people to murder their imperialist invaders, just like we did with Ukraine, is now a civic duty. We should make it very clear that Israel will not have its riviera with a Trump resort built on the ruins of Gaza.

This is not a war. It’s not a war when you indiscriminately murder and displace the civilian population without giving them a chance to defend themselves. Let’s turn it into a war again. Let’s make sure that the Israeli scumbags who bomb Gaza have something to lose (namely, their own lives and those of their own sons) by providing Palestinian people (not Hamas, common Palestinian people) with enough weapons to defend themselves and enough training on how to use them to kill.

fan service

ASUS laptops generally have a feature that lets the user toggle the fan speed. Fn-F5 on some models, Fn-F on others. The direct effect is to limit the fan speed, from whisper mode to megablast, and indirectly control performance. But it doesn’t work in OpenBSD, so I needed to write an ASUS ACPI WMI driver.

acpi

ACPI is a hardware abstraction layer that lets the computer tell the operating system how to do things. It provides functions in byte code which the OS interprets to perform certain tasks. So instead of having to write a driver for every CPU, you call the ACPI method _PSS and that tells you what to do.

Of course, vendors want to include functionality that isn’t defined in the standard, so they add some extra methods, and then you end up writing some custom drivers anyway, for the little buttons that turn the microphone on and off, etc. OpenBSD (and other OSs) have lots of little drivers for ThinkPads and whatnot.

ACPI method names are only four letters long, so what do we do if two vendors include a method called WMNB and how do we determine what it does? (Technically, the ACPI nodes are identified by seven letter names, and the methods live under them, so it’s not really a problem, but somebody got paid to make a solution anyway.)

wmi

The solution is an extension to ACPI called WMI, which stands for Windows Multiplies Irritations or something. You ask ACPI for a buffer called _WDG, and this contains a table mapping GUIDs (globally unique, says so right there in the name) to local method names. Looking through this table, we come across DCBA-FE-10-23-456789, which we recognize as a GUID of interest, and this tells us the method to call is WMNB, but now we know it’s the right one.

OpenBSD does not have a WMI driver, which is part of what I need to set the fan profile. There is a WMI driver in Linux, and it includes an ASUS support driver for a variety of functions I’m interested in.

first steps

First, I wrote a little acpi driver that attaches to PNP0C14. Read the _WDG buffer and print out all the GUIDs. Didn’t recognize any of the values, then realized I got the byte order wrong. Fixed that, saw something very close, realized I still didn’t get the byte order quite right. GUIDs are not big endian, they are not little endian, they are Goldilocks endian.

With that sorted out, I was able to enable events and get a printf every time I pushed a hotkey.

events

After receiving an interrupt and landing in our callback, we need to identify which event just happened by calling _WED. I did this, but was only getting 1 in response every time, regardless of key. I was a little stuck here. Very close to getting what I wanted, but without much clue as to what went wrong.

Turns out you can just look at your system’s ACPI code. OpenBSD runs acpidump at boot and saves all the files. Copy them to a work directory, run iasl -d, and have a look. A quick grep for _WED reveals the source.

            Method (_WED, 1, NotSerialized)
            {
                If ((Arg0 == 0xFF))
                {
                    Return (GANQ ())
                }

                Return (One)
            }
            Method (GANQ, 0, Serialized)
            {
                P8XH (Zero, 0xF2)
                If (AQNO)
                {
                    AQNO--
                    Local0 = DerefOf (ATKQ [AQHI])
                    AQHI++
                    AQHI &= 0x0F
                    Return (Local0)
                }

                Return (Ones)
            }

Even without knowing anything at all about ASL, this looks like a function that dequeues an event, but only if called with an argument of 255. That was the bug! Once I called it with the correct argument, I started receiving different event codes for backlight toggle, fan toggle, AC attach, etc.

devices

Wrote some more code to handle getting and setting device state. There’s a magic incantation to call an ACPI method and pass it a device id, which could be the keyboard backlight, or the wifi led, or the fan profile, etc. Started with the keyboard backlight, since this was pretty easy to observe.

After fixing a few simple bugs like reversing the device ids for fnlock and backlight, I was able to blink the keyboard light by pressing F7. It’s all coming together.

Toggling the fan profile didn’t seem to accomplish anything, though. Under Windows, there is an audible difference switching to whisper mode, but I didn’t observe any change.

The Linux driver includes code for at least three different fan and performance profile settings. The same driver is used for a wide range of laptops, from thin and lights to gaming fraggers. According to the Linux driver, you can detect which devices are present by reading their state, then checking for a high bit, and then getting the value by masking off some low bits. This seemed to indicate I had a fan boost device, but it wasn’t responding to my changes.

After printing out the raw values, I noticed they were all -2. That doesn’t seem very likely. But it definitely has a high bit set, and masking off the low bits made it look reasonable. I think I missed something in the Linux driver? There’s lots of shifts and masks in lots of places.

Back to the ACPI dump, the WMNB method is a giant switch statement that ends with Return (0xFFFFFFFE). So sure enough, there’s the -2 for a missing device, but I still don’t know which device id I should be using.

Back to the Linux driver, there’s an epic norse define for ASUS_WMI_DEVID_THROTTLE_THERMAL_POLICY_VIVO which I hadn’t yet integrated because I was testing on a Zenbook, not a Vivobook. Added a check anyway, rebooted, and that’s a bingo! The Linux define name is a lie. Confirmed by inspecting the ASL code.

            If ((IIA0 == 0x00110019))
            {
                Return (FANL (IIA1))
            }

Now I had all the pieces. After a bit of cleanup and refactoring, my driver is complete. Kinda. There’s still a bunch of sensors that would be interesting to read, but my immediate concern has been addressed.

results

Pressing Fn-F after boot drops the fan speed noticeably, from a medium whir to barely a whisper. This has only a moderate effect on ordinary performance. The processor’s power budget is reduced, but not its (single core) clock speeds, so everything still runs smoothly. Lengthy compiles are slower, but I can also switch back to megablast turbo mode with the tap of a button.

Battery life is also much better. The fan itself is obviously eating less power. I think the CPU also enters a somewhat lower power state in whisper mode, or it’s willing to sleep a little deeper. It’s not clear everything that changes, and it varies by machine, but that’s the beauty of it. I wrote the driver on an AMD Zenbook, but it works without changes on an Intel Vivobook. Very convenient.

misc

I also looked at the FreeBSD driver. FreeBSD directly uses the ACPICA code interfaces, calling function like AcpiEvaluateObject which personally look kinda out of place in BSD driver code. Linux does too, but all the functions have been renamed to acpi_evaluate_object, so they resemble the local style. I’m not entirely sure of the history here, but I think the generic ACPICA was at some pointer extracted and generified from the Linux code. OpenBSD uses a custom AML interpreter, so we have functions like aml_evalname.

In OpenBSD, nearly all header files are kept with their C files. So both dsdt.c and dsdt.h live in dev/acpi. (Notable exception is core C files in kern and headers in sys.) As a first time acpi driver writer, it was very convenient that all the OpenBSD code I needed to reference, from sample drivers to data structures to helper functions, was all in one spot.

Linux separates things such that I was looking at C files in drivers/platform/x86 and header files in include/linux/platform_data/x86. And the ACPI code lives other places as well. It’s all very orderly, but at times it felt like navigating a grocery store that arranges products in alphabetical order. Logical, but not exactly cozy.

Federated Services

Federated Services are services which many instances form a network to provide a greater whole than the sum of their parts, each participant in the Fediverse is an “instance”. A message or other item made available on one instance is visible and available on other instances.

We make these services available to all people who do not abuse it in order to promote the values of Free Speech, and those of the United States Constitution First Amendment. A free republic is not possible without free speech and commercial mainstream media do not provide it. We also get some advertisement benefit from hosting these, it is our hope that people who see how fast and responsible our services are will decide to do hosting or use other paid services here.

There are numerous federated services available, we offer Macrobloging platform Friendica, Hubzilla; Microbloging services Mastodon, Misskey, a federated search engine, Yacy, and a federated cloud service, Nextcloud.

Macrobloging services are message systems that allow long form posts similar in format to Facebook. These allow for works of fiction, poetry, technical papers, news items, short stories, and more. These formats are most useful for discussion of social issues.

Microbloging services allow only short form posts similar in format to Twitter. While you can link to larger articles elsewhere, you have a relatively short character limit and so can not post them directly.

Censorship, is handled much different on the fediverse than on mainstream media like Twitter or Facebook. On the fediverse, each individual instance is responsible for content available on that instance, but does not censor the rest of the network. Thus if you find the rules of one instance too constraining you can move to another.

Federated search engines are analogous to federated message systems in that each instance chooses what portion of the internet it wants to crawl. When you enter a search term, the local instance queries all of the federated instances, collates and sorts the results and presents them to you. As with messages, each instance can have it’s own censorship policies but no one instance can censor the entire network.

Given the wild-west nature of the fediverse, it is probably not suitable for children under 14, and you’re guaranteed to find some material that will offend virtually everyone. With federated search engines, material that is inappropriate will usually be flagged sensitive or nsfw (not safe for work) so as long as you don’t expand material marked as such, you can avoid this sort of material. There are occasionally people who violate these rules, we do our best to remove such individuals none the less some will get through.

We offer the following federated services:

Friendica.Eskimo.Com
Friendica is a decentralized long format macrobloging message network. It is similar in format to facebook however there is no centralized censorship. Also, it is able to federate with all other federated message systems which use ActivityPub protocol and also we have extensions that allow it to speak to several other networks via other protocols.

Hubzilla.Eskimo.Com
Hubzilla is similar in message format to Friendica in that it allows long posts. However, it specializes in it’s ability to provide connectivity to multiple protocols and so we include it in our mix of federated services primarily for the better connectivity it offers. Hubzilla provides a great deal of interoperability between many networks though ActivityPub is still it’s primary protocol. Hubzilla gives you a greater degree of control over privacy than some of the other networks. You can create private channels that are served between hubzilla instances and other compatible instances.

Mastodon.Eskimo.Com
Mastodon is first and foremost an alternative to Twitter. While Twitter has Tweets, Mastodon has Toots. The format is very similar. Mastodon toots have a limit of 500 characters. Similar to the short limit of Twitter. This is why this platform is referred to as a Microbloging format. Mastodon interacts with other ActivityPub instances however when a long form blog post from another instance arrives, you are only shown a short portion with a link to follow to see the full post on the originating site.

NextCloud.Eskimo.Com
If you are a customer of Eskimo North, your login credentials will work without a domain extension to access Nextcloud. If you are not a customer you can apply for a Nextcloud account using your choice of login and password, in this case the login should include your originating network. Some features require an Eskimo North shell account to take full advantage of.

Pixelfed.Eskimo.Com
Pixelfed is a federated pixel gallery. A place where you can share your photos to the widest audience possible, and you can view what others have shared. Instance is new as of April 6th, 2025.

Yacy.Eskimo.Com
Yacy is a federated search engine. There are several thousand instances on the Internet. Each instances crawls whatever portion of the web the administrator requested. It is also possible for the administrator of a site with relatively few resources to request a larger site to do crawls on their behalf. Unfortunately, it does not provide a method for an end user to initiate a crawl, but if you send e-mail to support@eskimo.com and request a crawl, we will initiate a crawl on your behalf.

Shell Accounts

Shell Accounts
A shell is a command line interface for an operating system. With most shell providers, a command line interface on one flavor of Linux or Unix is all you get. Eskimo North provides access to eight different popular Linux distributions and SunOS Unix. Eskimo North also full remote desktop capabilities using X2Go with sound, and also NX, VNC, and RPD without sound.

Account Types
We offer four different levels of shell accounts: Economy, Standard, Power, and Enterprise. Background tasks such as IRC bots, Game Servers, and the like are permitted on all account types except student. IRC servers are not permitted because of their tendency to draw denial of service attacks. Standard, Power, Enterprise, and Super-Max shells include a MySQL database allowing you to run a variety of LAMP stack based applications on your website and to use non-web based applications that require a database.

Web Hosting
Web hosting under our domain is provided with all shell accounts. You can host your own domains with virtual domains or web hosting packages.

Remote Desktop
Remote desktop capability is like having a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers plugged right into our servers. Because our servers can be accessed anywhere in the world, this allows you to have a work environment you can access from anywhere in the world without risking losing your files to a laptop, tablet, or phone thief. We offer remote desktop capabilities on all of our shell servers except for the SunOS server. We support x2go, nx, vnc, and rdp protocols. X2go is the best choice as it provides extremely efficient compression and X round trip removal as well as sound.

Applications
Applications include Office Suites such as Libre Office and Caligra (which can read and write Microsoft Office file formats), Web and Program Development tools such as Bluefish Editor as well as many other editors, compilers, interpreters, scripting languages, debuggers, profilers, and online documentation.

E-mail
Our e-mail system offers unprecedented flexibility. You can access your mail via shell mail readers including graphical mailers like Thunderbird, or via Web mail, or via pop-3 and imap mail protocols, complete with TLS encryption. Our mail system includes Bayesian filtering with Spam Assassin which can be individually configured for your needs. Procmail allows you to sort and process mail automatically. Smartlist allows you to maintain mailing lists.

Security
Access to all of our servers is available via strong encryption. The shell servers all support ssh access. All of the remote desktop protocols tunnel via ssh. We maintain all of our servers up to date keep with the latest patches. Backups are made weekly.

Eskimo North has been providing Unix timeshare services since 1985. We have been providing Linux timeshare, shell access, web hosting, e-mail, and Internet services since 1992. Please take a look at our services as they support our free Federated services including Friendica, Hubzilla, Mastodon, Nextcloud, Pixelfed, and Yacy Search.

some observations regarding dad's medical care and relationship with his wife, my stepmom, are that 1, medical treatment for alzheimers is completely ineffective and pointless, and 2, marrying a woman 15 years younger than you isn't a great idea because as you get older, she may not be interested in taking care of an old man with dementia and you can end up in a nursing home.

my aunt is also married a man who is like 20 years older than her, and they're still together, so maybe it can work. we were on a zoom call recently and i noticed she was pretty short with him and he seemed unhappy

One-Click RCE in ASUS’s Preinstalled Driver Software

"- Visit website with driverhub.asus.com.* subdomain
- Site makes UpdateApp request for PoC executable “calc.exe”
- “calc.exe” will be downloaded, fail the signature check and not be executed
- Site makes UpdateApp request for custom AsusSetup.in
- This will also be downloaded and not executed
- Site makes UpdateApp request for signed ASUS binary “AsusSetup.exe”
- This will be downloaded and executed with admin permissions and does a silent install using -s, which will cause it to read the AsusSetup.ini file and run “calc.exe” specified in “SilentInstallRun” also with admin permissions

I asked ASUS if they offered bug bounties. They responded saying they do not, but they would instead put my name in their “hall of fame”. This is understandable since ASUS is just a small startup and likely does not have the capital to pay a bounty. [link to marketcap with 14 BILLION :guraKekw: ]"

Quote: "Vladimir Putin has delineated Russian conditions for a broad, permanent sustainable peace: No temporary ceasefires, no European "peacekeepers", no NATO in #Ukraine - and recognition of #Crimea and the oblasts #Luhansk, #Donetsk, #Zaporizhia and #Kherson as permanent Russian territory.
As long as the #US, #EU #NATO countries and #Zelensky do not recognize these historical Russian oblasts as permanent Russian territory, the #Russia army will continue advancing beyond the four oblasts and toward the historical “Russian cities” of Odessa, Mykolaiv, Dnipro and Kharkiv"...

Pakistan and India reached ‘full and immediate’ ceasefire, says Trump middleeastmonitor.com/20250510…

The (new) Observer's Patrica Clarke has surveyed the shape of 'Trump Family Inc.' & how the Tangerine Tyrant's second term will likely further enrich the various family members & close associates.

None of this is particularly new but when you have it all summarised in one place it become clear quiet how POTUS Trump is focussed on the presidency for private gain rather than any inkling of public service (again no surprise, but just now very stark!)

Quotes

  • Otto Kuusinen: As long as the working class wages only an economic struggle, the bourgeoisie does not see in that any great danger for itself; but when the working class organises politically, i.e., creates a political party which expresses its will as a class, the bourgeoisie begins seriously to fear for its rule. That is why reaction deals its main blows against the political party of the working class. At the same time, trying to undermine the party from within, capitalist propaganda endeavours to persuade the workers that they can do without their own party. One of the manifestations of bourgeois influence on the working class is the anarchist and anarcho-syndicalist denial of the leading role of a political party.

What SATA (or PCIe+adapter) SSD for a Debian laptop?

Basically want something with decent performance and durability. Cost matters, but I'm not trying to hit rock bottom. I'm particularly wondering, is an HMB-type PCIe SSD ok combined with a SATA adapter? I think HMB is supported if your machine can use a PCIe or NVMe disk directly, but I'd be using an older Thinkpad with a 2.5" SATA slot at least for now. So I'm wondering if I'd lose a lot of performance if the SSD combo doesn't have its own RAM buffer.

I see good deals by today's standards for PCIe SSD's at of all places, Office Depot.

Thanks.

Lenin: How Engels would have ridiculed the vulgar petty bourgeois, the 'Social Democrat' (in the French sense of the ‘forties and the general European sense of 1914-18), who took it into his head to talk about 'pure democracy' in a society divided into classes! But enough. It is impossible to enumerate all the various absurdities Kautsky goes to the length of, since every phrase he utters is a bottomless pit of apostasy. Marx and Engels analyzed the Paris Commune in a most detailed manner and showed that its merit lies in its attempt to smash, to break up the 'ready-made state machinery.' Marx and Engels considered this condition to be so important that this was the only amendment they introduced in 1872 in the 'obsolete' (in parts) program of the Communist Manifesto.10 Marx and Engels showed that the Paris Commune had abolished the army and the bureaucracy, had abolished parliamentarism, had destroyed 'that parasitic excrescence, the state,' etc.; but the sage Kautsky donning his nightcap repeats the fairy tale about 'pure democracy,' which has been told a thousand times by liberal professors. wordsmith.social/protestation/…
