I just learned that the Citigroup building had to have all these repairs because it was structurally unsound under high winds (in part due to contractors using bolts rather than welding, but also just design oversight on a very unconventional design) so they had a **secret evacuation plan for midtown Manhattan** and didn't really tell anyone until AFTER they mostly fixed it.

Obsessed with the concept of "secret evacuation plan" in a major city. That's so creepy and bonkers!

  • Otto Kuusinen: As long as the working class wages only an economic struggle, the bourgeoisie does not see in that any great danger for itself; but when the working class organises politically, i.e., creates a political party which expresses its will as a class, the bourgeoisie begins seriously to fear for its rule. That is why reaction deals its main blows against the political party of the working class. At the same time, trying to undermine the party from within, capitalist propaganda endeavours to persuade the workers that they can do without their own party. One of the manifestations of bourgeois influence on the working class is the anarchist and anarcho-syndicalist denial of the leading role of a political party.

When this all came to light, I remember thinking how terrible and stupid Rose was to do the gambling on his own sport. He had a long long way to fall.

Then came the doping/HGH scandal of Sosa, McGuire, and others, to the point where their "records" have asterixs next to them.

Rose's record and baseball legacy is what will be honored with a hall-of-fame induction. Big difference between gambling and outright cheating IMO

Rubrique : victoires.

Cassowary banishment from tropical forests
Urban sprawl and wildlife translocation

"Only around 4,000 southern cassowaries are thought to remain in Australia, and the species is threatened by habitat destruction, vehicle strikes, dog attacks and climate change."

An "endangered southern cassowary was discovered underweight and with a belly full of tomato seeds and fruits scavenged from compost bins. Several reports indicated the bird had been wandering along roads close to cane fields and was in danger of being hit by a car or truck."

I'm listening to @pluralistic 's podcast "understood" about the enshittification of the internet. He got to the point where he's talking about Dimitry Skiyarov's arrest at defcon in 2001 for making a tool that converted adobe's propietary format into normal PDFs. Adobe sicked the FBI on him.

Now, I don't know the details of the case, at all. I literally learned of the existence of this case right now. But is it not weird that a conference on hacking and cyber security did not think beforehand that it would be dangerous for Dimitry to visit the US? Why did they not foresee that he could get arrested, and take precautions to keep him safe? I'm not really dunking on defcon, it's been 25 years since then. I'm more trying to make a lesson for us who are naive enough about government bullying now: make a threat model for the people in your conference, stay alert, the government is not your friend, and they are not passive

Another lesson might be to "keep an eye on your enemies, and intervene everywhere they try to push their agenda, and maybe act preemptively in new spaces".

If someone had followed Lehman into Geneva and just intervened in everything he did, he probably could not have been able to make his DMCA part of the UN treaties. I don't know enough to know if that is a reasonable proposal, but it seems like an ok thing to do.

We just learned yesterday that the majority on the House Ways and Means Committee added language to the reconciliation bill that would give the administration unchecked power to revoke nonprofit tax status for organizations.

Section 112209 raises profound constitutional concerns, as it opens the door to restrictions on free speech and could be weaponized against organizations that promote civil rights and liberties and racial justice.

They paused that nonprofit EO because the sector immediately mobilized and was prepared.

These sneaky shits hope we don't notice this time around.

And suddenly, it felt like everyone disappeared, lost in the magic of Queen's sound. The music enveloped us, creating a moment where nothing else mattered. It was just Freddie's voice and the powerful melodies, transporting us to a place where we could all feel connected, regardless of time or distance. That’s the beauty of Queen’s music - it has the power to unite us, even in silence.

Live Aid was a multi-venue benefit concert held on Saturday 13 July 1985, as well as a music-based fundraising initiative. Enver Hoxha: While adhering unwaveringly to the teachings of Marxism-Leninism on the violent revolution as a universal law, the revolutionary party of the working class is resolutely opposed to adventurism and never plays with armed insurrection. In all conditions and circumstances, it carries out an unceasing revolutionary struggle and activity in various forms, in order to prepare itself and the masses for the decisive battles in the revolution, for the overthrow of the rule of the bourgeoisie with revolutionary violence. But only when the revolutionary situation has fully matured does it put armed insurrection directly on the order of the day and take all the political, ideological, organizational and military measures to carry it through to victory. wordsmith.social/protestation/…

Is it just me, or does anyone else get chills listening to Queen's legendary performance at the Live Aid concert on July 13, 1985, around 6:45 PM (BST)? It's one of those rare moments where the music is so powerful that you can’t help but turn it up to the max! I mean, it’s the only time my neighbors never complain about the noise - when my stereo amplifier hits 200W and the doors and windows are wide open! The energy and emotion in Freddie's voice are just unmatched. How does that performance make you feel? Do you have any favorite moments from that set?

Enver Hoxha: In the present revolutionary situations, the Marxist-Leninist parties throughout the world must fight continuously to strengthen their ranks and their Marxist-Leninist unity, to link themselves closely with the masses of people and with one another, because the communist and workers' movement throughout the world is one of the fundamental factors frustrating the plans concocted against the people by both the Soviet revisionists and the US imperialists, who from day to day are strengthening their fascist dictatorships in order to dominate the world.

Donald Trump just made it harder to go to federal prison.

On Friday, President Trump issued a new executive order with a remarkably broad scope and deep implications, under the title “Fighting Overcriminalization in Federal Regulations.” It starts with plain, clear, direct language:

The Code of Federal Regulations contains over 48,000 sections, stretching over 175,000 pages — far more than any citizen can possibly read, let alone fully understand. Worse, many carry potential criminal penalties for violations. The situation has become so dire that no one — likely including those charged with enforcing our criminal laws at the Department of Justice — knows how many separate criminal offenses are contained in the Code of Federal Regulations, with at least one source estimating hundreds of thousands of such crimes. Many of these regulatory crimes are “strict liability” offenses, meaning that citizens need not have a guilty mental state to be convicted of a crime.

This status quo is absurd and unjust. It allows the executive branch to write the law, in addition to executing it. That situation can lend itself to abuse and weaponization by providing Government officials tools to target unwitting individuals. It privileges large corporations, which can afford to hire expensive legal teams to navigate complex regulatory schemes and fence out new market entrants, over average Americans.
