I still daily drive my Pinephone. I've been looking for a good replacement for it but I still haven't found anything.
I've been thinking about getting the Pro, but the state of the software is not quite there yet (at least from what I've been reading). The best option I found is the Fairphone 5.
I really hope something better comes out before the OG Pinephone becomes completely unusable. The FP5 is more expensive than I need and I'd rather buy a Linux-first device.
@k8ie I think it really depends on which OS you want to run, and what the time frame is. If the PinePhone works for you, I don't think there's any much need to worry. I was actually almost positively surprised during my experiments that led to the blog post: Mobian Trixie (which ships GTK 4.18) worked surprisingly well overall from SD card, and the Alpine 3.21 container is nice and small and keeps a working Megapixels around.
@k8ie For current options, it's not too easy: - FuriLabs FLX1 reportedly is a good experience, but no mainline, - RK3588s options (Liberux Nexx, dawndrums Divine D) seem multiple months away, - FairPhone 5 lacks audio support on mainline (USB-C dongle works though), - Shiftphone 8 (same SoC as Fairphone 5, but 12 GB RAM is supposedly shipping in August) and how well support will pan out is unknown. OnePlus 6, Poco F1, Pixel 3a are affordable, but also aging (with hard(er) to replace batteries).

I just found out about TLP - a module to download with apt, which is a good utility for maintaining the laptop battery. You can set a minimum charge value, and a maximum charge value. But it is not sufficient for my use case. My question is - is there any utility I can use to discharge the battery WHILE connected to AC?
The reason behind this is: I want to use the solar power during the day to charge up the battery to 80 or 90% and then discharge the battery in the evening to 15-20%. Afterwards use AC power again. The solar energy during mid-day is cheaper and available in abundance.
On a big level with many computers this could make a good impact on the energy network, or am I wrong?
I've got a 2021 Dell laptop. In uefi, you can set charge times and type of charge, 50%,80%, full, and smart. I think it's in like 1/2 hour blocks by day. By that I mean on (day of week) from 9:30am to 6:00pm charge full, different day may have different settings. .
@Intheflsun @Floopquist What I meant is that I do not think you can have it discharge the battery when AC is present without altering the PD chips firmware.
The converter says "Output: 65W" So it would be something, and a good place to start as the battery is there anyway and is plugged in all the time too, anyway.
That's the absolute maximum output, a typical laptop uses more like 2-6W while running.
Plus cycling the battery like that will wear it out faster, and they're generally only rated for 500 or so cycles. The replacement cost would likely easily over come any savings.

They had done a quiz about a film, and the quiz had been ai generated. They spent most of the lesson pointing out all of the mistakes in the quiz and the woefully incorrect answers.

the article makes no mention of usernames or passwords being leaked. and while a leak of phone numbers is obviously a problem, historical sms 2fa codes are, well, historical and aren't an active risk to account security
steam's authentication process never even sends a plaintext password to the backend if i remember right, so they definitely know how to do account security and not to store plaintext passwords
The article doesn't say passwords were leaked, just 2FA codes through the SMS provider. You could use access to the 2FA code to reset a user's password, but that's not the same as a password hash leak.
tbf - this is not as big of a panic moment as it may seem. This is only historic OTP data. Steam Guard seems to be as funxtional as when Gaben fave out his password/mail combo couple years ago to prove the point of otp codes.

Looks like it's probably just 2FA info -- specifically SMS 2FA numbers -- that got leaked probably. If anyone is using SMS 2FA, they definitely should do something about it.
I won't disagree that changing passwords just to be on the safe side is a good idea though. I disagree with those who so adamantly insist that even though there is evidence of a breach of some kind we should just ignore it just because it's not immediately showing signs of including passwords.
So the great thing about Fedi is that you can edit your posts as new information comes in. No need to write a separate update post, and it spreads just as well as the original. Updating the post to remove factually incorrect information also helps to boost the credibility behind the message that changing passwords is still a good practice. Anyway, that's a long-winded way of saying I think you should update the post, but fully support pushing people to update passwords. ^^
Changing my password was made extremely difficult by the way. I use steamguard-cli and ente Auth for 2FA but steam insisted on sending me a code to the app. I had to jump through many hoops to end up at email verification again.
The 2FA had to be fully removed before I could change my pw 😅

I created a simple Bash script that will always disable the default/internal monitor on your laptop when using AR glasses (or any other external monitor). I find this useful for when using AR glasses such as the XReal One which allows you to change the mode from regular mode to ultra-wide mode and when doing this, it will act as your unplugging the XReal ones and plugging in XReal one again in a new mode, causing the interal laptop display to become enabled.
To keep the laptop display always off, weather the laptop lid is either closed or open, this simple bash script will always disable the laptop screen every X seconds (You can change it by changing the wait variable)
Simply copy this script and create a new bash script such as disable-display.sh, make the script file executable and add it to your startup applications and it will run in the background. You will need to run xrandr command with all of your displays enabled to get the names of the displays and change the variable names in the script accordingly.
NOTE: This script may not work with a full Wayland setup and may only work on X11.

I got the XReal One as a portable ergonomic monitor and I may use them as my main monitor going forward. I have a sit/stand desk with monitor arms which I can adjust the height and position for an ergonomic design to always look straight at the monitor and not looking down.
From my research currently the XReal Ones are the best AR/XR glasses on the market due to the chip built into them, not needing any other devices or software to run, just plug in play. The XReal One Pros which I think are coming out soon have some better specs but to me, not worth the extra money.
I been using them for regular desktop/laptop task and coding and I prefer to use the anchor mode when doing this. I sometimes also use the ultra-wide mode to simulate 2 monitors. I also been using them for gaming and I will either have it in follow or anchor mode but never use ultra-wide mode for gaming.

I do also have a standing desk with a relatively large screen on a monitor arm. I also have a walking pad under the standing desk. The goal being to ergonomically have as much freedom as possible while still being efficient.
I did try the XReal months ago but I don't think I tried the Pro.
Otherwise I worked with pretty much everything (Google Glass, Vision Pro, Quest (all models), Monocle/Frames, my own DIY ones, etc) but my main focus is WebXR and 6DoF, so not really replacing a screen. I do understand it is useful, and sometimes as I travel I use the Quest 3 or Vision Pro to work in there but that's typically a temporary measure. My professional perspective is that 6DoF with hand tracking and accessories (6DoF pens, BT keyboard, etc) is the most novel way to interact with information hence why I build open-source WebXR prototypes on that topic.
