PieFed uses PDQ hashing to generate a fingerprint of an image and can use that fingerprint to detect other posts that use the same or fairly similar images, for moderation purposes. Hashes are added to a block list which stops the image from being re-posted in future. Demo
PieFed does not generate PDQ hashes itself - it uses a separate service to do it. Several different instances could be using the same hashing service which will be more efficient than everyone running their own. When an image is being federated around the URL of it will be sent to the hashing service by multiple different fedi instances and only the first will be slow as all the subsequent requests will be served from a cache.

Use shared language.
Don't use lefty jargon when the person you're talking to doesn't subscribe to these ideas. No white privilege, no colonial oppression, no intersectionality. Translate to a shared language, built on reasonable, common assumptions and do the work required to bring people on board.
Because you can be damned sure the MAGA crowd are doing the work.
This is not just about the alienating effect of jargon (like you normally get in science communication). It's also about sneaking unshared assumptions into the conversation.
You can be talking about Gaza to somebody who is absolutely hoffirifed by Israel's actions, but if you frame the whole thing as colonial oppression you can still lose them.
They will detach from the conversation because they don't share that particular perspective and you didn't make room discuss that assumption.

If someone posts a detailed explanation for why a thing that the current administration is doing is foolish, or misguided, or illegal, or whatever, it is NOT reasonable to assume or infer that that person things the thing they posted about is the only, or the worst, or the most important, fault they find with the administration. They are much more likely simply providing an insight about a specific thing.
it's selective too, no one batted an eye at the multiple discussions about the technical aspects of DOGE's actions, because most of the community here is IT adjacent. Other expertises get silenced
