Whelp, here I am. Been an Arch user for over 10 years now, and to this date I love it. But something is bothering me lately. Almost two years ago I jumped ship and completely switched to Wayland (using Plasma first, then Sway). I tasted modernism with all its features and it was sweet. But those last two years were a timeframe where I had to troubleshoot quite a lot compared to before where I used XFCE which was a very stable and reliant experience.
I am at a stage in my life where I do not have the time, nor the energy anymore to troubleshoot problems on a regular basis. I am now almost afraid of installing updates, because something new could fail again. But I cannot go back anymore. Wayland is too sweet.
So although I still love Arch, maybe it is time for me to look for something else which gives me more ease-of-mind. I am specifically looking at immutable distros now since the concept seems to be exactly what I am looking for (stable, low maintenance, up-to-date packages, easy rollback). But I am a bit lost with the options and hope that you can help me with some recommendations.
I mainly browse the web, watch movies, game, do some scripting and run qemu VMs
I am comfortable with the terminal
I don't do fancy customizations
I don't like GNOME Distributions that I find interesting so far:
Aurora
Bazzite
NixOS
I am still trying to wrap my head around what the differences between NixOS and the other two are. Afaik, with Nix you can configure your system once (including what packages you want to use), save this configuration in a file, and load it up whenever I need to set it up again. And it seems to have the same concept of updates, such that you can easily roll back if needed. But it seems to be aimed more at professional users and that I might overshoot at what I was aiming for. So for someone who likes to setup a system once and then just wants to use it indefinitely without too much maintenance what would your recommendation/advice/critisism regarding my situation be?
Edit: thank you guys so much for all your recommendations and thoughts! After some further analysis I decided to install Bazzite for the following reasons:
shares a lot of similarities with other Atomic distros
but has all the nice gaming related things pre-installed and configured and it uses a properly pre-installed Steam (not the Flatpak version) (the main reason why I chose it over Aurora, which would have been my next best pick)
my qemu virtual machines run perfectly fine (also the shared folder)
some dev stuff already pre-installed (don't think I need more than there already is)
fast and the OS feels like made out of one block, very consistent
I was ready to use my machine like I want to in basically no time
I already love the atomic way of handling updates
so far no issues
The only thing left for me to do is to figure out how to properly install SyncThing and Zerotier-One, then I am absolutely set.
I noticed that you are interested in immutable distros! That's a good choice for your requirements, since it allows you to skip troubleshooting most issues by rebooting or performing a rollback.
I myself am happily using NixOS, but I think its advantages only shine when you want to spend time configuring your system. That being said, if you want to invest that time once and you stay on the stable version, you can also have quite a stable experience.
The other two options you listed are both atomic Fedora spins made by uBlue, which add minor customizations to the base image. Both of them seemt to be based on Fedora Kinoite, which would be another option. Fedora in generally is more opinionated, which is good if you don't want to tweak anything. If you want to try out multiple of these options, you can always rebase your current atomic Fedora desktop to another image.
I share your desire for a system that always, 100%, every time, is there and ready to be used.
At the same time, I really like arch and the convenience of the AUR.
Hence, I boot-strap reliability onto my system through btrfs snapshots.
The setup is extremely simple, (provided your install is grub+btrfs) just install timeshift + the auto-snap systemd services. Configure it, and forget it.
Next time something breaks, instead of spending time on troubleshooting, you timeshift back to a known good point and then just get on with using your system.
With the auto-snap package installed every update also creates a restore point to go back to before it.
In addition to that, I started updating my system less frequency. The logic being that the more often you update a rolling release install, the more likely you are to catch it at a time when something is wrong, before it is fixed. Still regularly, but instead of every other day, I now have an update notification that goes off once a week.
The result has been zero time spent troubleshooting my system. If it worked yesterday, it'll work today. If it worked last week, but doesn't today, I'm a reboot away from a known good snapshot.
Oh, for sure. If you wait a month, the bigger update can be a lot more trouble.
But look at it like this. If a rolling distro has a problem once a week, which is fixed within 24 hours, updating daily guarantees you will run into it.
While updating weekly means your chance is only one in seven.
I had my first fuck up with openSUSE+Gnome a couple of weeks ago when impatient me killed my laptop in the middle of like 1600-updates. BRTFS was the only reason I didn't rip my hair out and the primary reason I will be switching my daily driver gaming rig to Linux, finally! That FS is the tits!
If six months from now you decide that you do need updates, Arch won't like the accumulated six months of updates coming all at once and might throw a tantrum.
Also not updating is a bad idea in general, you do need security updates for stuff like your browser. Please don't use an out of date system. If you want, install something like debian which will give you only critical updates that won't break stuff until the next release.

Leider tut RIAS alles dafür um so intransparent wie möglich zu sein, packt alles mögliche in ihre Begrifflichkeiten rein und zählt das selbe Ereignis mehrfach (zb mehrere Anzeigen von den selben oder gleichen Sticker). So gut das Ansinnen mit RIAS auch war, die Zahlen als Fakten gemeldet, sind reichlich wertlos.
In der oben verlinkten Studie kann man zahlreiche Beispiele nachlesen, aus den deutlich wird, welche Probleme deren Begrifflichkeiten haben, welche Schlagseite deren Arbeit hat, wie systematisch historische Fakten verzerrt werden, und internationales Recht geleugnet wird um zur gewünschten Interpretation zu bekommen. Die fehlende Systematik, was, wann und wie gezählt wird macht die Zahlen reichlich unklar, und kaum nachprüfbar.

@tuga Depends what you mean by industrialisation; there's a lot of overlap. Producing what humans need by efficient manufacturing isn't strictly speaking the problem. A death cult of endless growth in production and concentration of wealth in the hands of a powerful overclass *as an end in itself* is the problem. But of course the industrial revolution was in service of that end, so any kind of "good industrialisation" would have to be wrested from the grip of capital.
I suppose it's fair to observe that the problem is (human) *consumption*.
Capitalism leads to it; so does industrialisation. The causes are important, of course, but the problem in the end is that we consume more and more of ... everything: energy, land, water, other species, minerals and fossil fuels, etc.
Without the complex supply chain and techniques of modern agriculture people would starve.

Deutsche Medien schreiben hunderte an Schlagzeilen für die 5 LKW Lieferungen von Hilfsgütern nach Gaza (über 500 wären pro Tag notwendig), währenddessen Netanjahu sagt das sie diese nur zulassen weil sie sonst die internationale Unterstützung für ihre Kriegshandlungen verlieren.
Wieso fällt man auf diesen Trick rein, wenn er so blatant offengelegt wurde?
Zeitgleich werden humanitäre Hilfsorganisationen von Israel weiterhin angegriffen und nicht in die Region gelassen. Langfristig sollen humanitäre Hilfszentren in Zusammenarbeit mit einer U.S. Privatfirma aufgebaut werden, als Alternative zu den U.N. Hilfsorganisationen, welche laut der israelischen Regierung zu oft die Hamas unterstützten (Aussagen welche niemand bis auf die israelische Regierung selbst belegen kann).
Mit dem Ziel das diese Hilfszentren nicht für die Hamas da seien und dem Wissen wie oft und absichtlich in der Vergangenheit zwischen Zivilisten und Terroristen von der israelischen Regierung nicht unterschieden wurde, so werden diese Hilfszentren eine Katastrophe. Kein Staat kann eine humanitäre Krise auslösen und zeitgleich mit irgendeiner Ernsthaftigkeit diese bekämpfen.
Meine Behauptung ist das diese Form der humanitären Hilfe Teil der jetzigen Offensive gegen Gaza sein werden und somit auch genutzt um Menschen zu vertreiben.
Über 400 humanitäre Hilfskräfte wurden durch israelische Angriffe seit Ende 2023 umgebracht. Die Begründung lautete immer das es ein Versehen war oder sie Hamas-Soldaten geherbergt haben, ein Vorwurf welcher nie, für keinen einzigen Fall, unabhängig bestätigt werden konnte.
Es gibt einen Grund warum in keiner anderen humanitären Krise das Land welches eine ethnische Säuberung plant und durchführt, gleichzeitig auch die humanitäre Hilfe gibt, welche diese aufhalten soll.
Netanjahu will also den „Trump-Plan” von der Vertreibung von über 2.000.000 Menschen umsetzen, doch auf ein Mal gleichzeitig dafür Sorgen das Essen, Trinken und medizinische Versorgung in den Gazastreifen gelangen? Doch vor allem soll das nicht von den Organisationen (UNRWA, Rotes Kreuz, World Kitchen, Ärzte ohne Grenzen, u.v.m.) bereitgestellt werden welche alle an der Grenze drauf warten es zu dürfen, sondern einer US Privatfirma.
Es geht eindeutig nicht um humanitäre Hilfe, es geht um den Anschein dessen währenddessen man dafür sorgen will weniger Augen, weniger Kameras bei seinem Genozid zu haben. Darüber hinaus brauchen die zehntausenden Soldaten notwendig um die zwei Millionen Menschen zu vertreiben auch Essen, Trinken und medizinische Versorgung. Bei den Menschen in Gaza wird nichts ankommen.
Wir vergessen die 15 humanitären Hilfskräfte welche am 23. März von Israel in einem fahrenden, markierten Krankenwagen, beschossen wurden, obwohl er mit laufenden Sirenen gefahren ist, um daraufhin ihre Leichnam in einem impromptu geschaffenen Massengrab unterzubringen, welches mit Militär-Bulldozer dem Erdboden gleich gemacht wurde.
Daraufhin leugnete das israelische Militär alles, behauptete es hätte nur auf die Hamas geschossen und meinte sie hätten nie jemanden dergleichen begraben.
Erst als das Massengrab zufällig von Palästinensern gefunden wurde, sie die Ärzte in ihren Schutzwesten mit ihren Portemonnaies und allen Dingen die sie identifizieren sahen, behauptete die israelische Regierung das Auto sei ohne Markierung und Still auf sie losgefahren.
Dann wurde auf einen der Handys der begrabenen Ärzte ein Video entdeckt welches zeigte wie der Krankenwagen durch die Nacht fuhr, mit lauter Sirene, Markierung, und Lichtershow welche für alle klar macht: dies ist ein Krankenwagen. Erst dann räumte das israelische Militär ein „eine Investigation zu starten”, was bei vergleichbaren Ereignissegn in der Vergangenheit nie zu irgendwas geführt hat.
Bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt druckten viele westliche Medien die Israelische narrative ohne Zweifel ab, der Vorwurf die IDF habe kaltblütig auf Ärzte geschossen sei wahnsinnig. Zeugenaussagen waren praktisch irrelevant, es musste ein perfektes Video noch im Massengrab erhalten bleiben und es ins Internet schaffen, damit die Wahrheit ans Licht kam.
Wie viel öfter ist etwas dergleichen schon vorgekommen? Wie viele unmarkierten, undokumentierten Massengräber müssen noch erst gefunden werden um die Wahrheit aufzudecken? Vor allem: Wann werden wir die Zeit dafür haben, wenn jetzt gerade immer noch neue Massengräber geschaffen werden?

Diese Aussage klang vor 15 Tagen noch verrückt, heute hat sich längst die Tagesschau gegen die GHF gestellt, vor allem nachdem der Gründer und Leiter mit schweren Vorwürfen gegen die Organisation zurückgetreten ist.
Nachdem das israelische Militär an einem GHF Stützpunkt Gestern auf Schutz-, Nahrung-, und Hilfssuchende geschossen hat, wobei 27 gestorben und über 200 verletzt wurden, sowie die vielen Berichte, Bilder, und Videos dieser Zentren umzäunt und mit arbiträren Exekutionen, kann die Gaza Humanitarian Foundation kaum als unabhängiger Akteur angesehen werden. Sie ist ein Mittel dieses Genozids, denn erneut: Keine Organisation die einen Genozid durchführt wir die humanitäre Hilfe bieten um sich davor zu schützen.
Die komplette Bevölkerung des Gazastreifens ist von einer Hungersnot bedroht. Doch Israel lässt nur wenige Lkw in den Küstenstreifen. Nun soll eine Genfer Stiftung die humanitäre Hilfe organisieren. Aber sie ist umstritten.
Es ist faszinierend wie die israelische Regierung bis heute behauptet, die UN humanitäre Hilfsorganisation UNRWA seien Terroristen, doch der Moment in der die IDF verantwortlich für die Notfallhilfe wurde haben sie angefangen auf die Hilfssuchenden zu schießen.
Sucht man allein auf Google nach der UNRWA (eine humanitäre Hilfsorganisation der Vereinten Nationen) so ist das erste Ergebnis eine von der israelischen Regierung bezahlte Werbung, welche Lügen über die Organisation verbreitet und die, bisher aus keiner Quelle auch nur ansatzweise bestätigte, Behauptung verbreitet dies sei eine Terrororganisation.
Könnt ihr euch noch dran erinnern als die deutsche Regierung Zahlungen an die UNRWA pausierte als Israel das erste Mal diese Vorwürfe publizierte?
Wir haben den Vorwürfen natürlich einfach Blind getraut. Daraufhin musste die Bundesregierung selbstverständlich ihre Entscheidung begründen und hat die Thematik unabhängig überprüft. Nun ja, die Zahlungen an die UNRWA sind ziemlich schnell wieder fortgeführt worden, da keiner der Vorwürfe der „Hamas-Unterwanderung der UNRWA” auch nur Halt hatten.
Das bis heute diese Behauptung fortgeführt wird um zu begründen das keine andere humanitäre Hilfsorganisation in den Gazastreifen darf außer die, die Nähe zur US Regierung hat. Naja...
Was sind das denn für Hilfsorganisationen ohne Nähe zu den US? Weil alle Nationen rund um Israel haben schon öfter militärisch versucht, Israel zu vernichten. Hilfe von der "arabischen Welt" bedeutet da was anderes.

Halt moment, also es ist schon belegt, dass Teile der UNRWA mindestens Hamas nahe sind, und das macht aus israelisch militärischer Sicht es plausibel, Hilfslieferungen nicht über UNRWA laufen zu lassen, weil die wie eine Konfilktpartei aussehen. Das muss nicht bedeuten, dass Israel ein Werkzeug haben will, um die Bewohner von Gaza auszuhungern, weil Genozid-Absichten sind jetzt noch nicht so gut dokumentiert von Israel.

Dass die UN-Zentren dem Friedensprozess mehr geschadet als geholfen haben, hat sogar die UN festgestellt, dass kann man nicht so einfach ab tun. Unter den Augen der UN fand ein massiver Schmuggel von Kriegswaffen statt, den sie nie unterbunden bekommen hat. In theory this kind of thing could be designed in a way that keeps information confidential: use a model that does not change, record the session, have it summarize the session (risky, because LLMs make mistakes), then discard everything other than the summary which would be a confidential medical record retained by the doctors office. But that isn't what they are doing in many cases. They are retaining information and reserving the right to use it for training, which goes back to the company.
The big scandal is going to be one of these outside software as a service companies the medical management team and administrators insist on using totally sifting that data on the back end.
It can be as simple as a text confirmation of an appointment. Now imagine that appointment is with an oncologist, and who would like to know that data. It can easily go beyond you simply receiving more pharma ads into real estate vultures and others wanting your property and attention
Good Grief! The orthopaedic practice I use uses human scribes. Seems to let surgeon concentrate on explanations & results in our visits. I would be looking for another practice were I in your shoes.
Best case scenario they take away jobs from people who really need it. Worst Case scenario they're lying about deleting the data and using the data either to advertise or give to the government to harass and convict innocent people. (they absolutely are, it's cheaper to pay the wrist slap fines than to stop being evil) there's no positives to agreeing to AI, it's all negative.

Apart from the confidentiality issue, it's just not good medical practice. Writing down what a patient tells me helps me work through their symptoms, identify the crucial points to aid diagnosis, and gives me a precise record of the conversation to refer back to later. No way am I going to entrust that to a half-price HAL.
