And some of us even didn’t like it, because those places could often blur the lines between a place of business and a place for socializing

To be clear, this was always the goal. If an employer could have you work 80 hours a week and sleep under your desk, they would. The goal is to give employees things to do around the office, so they don’t feel the need to actually leave work. Because if you’re playing ping pong in the break room, you’re immediately available for your manager to go “hey, we have a project for you.” Even if you’re not clocked in while playing ping pong, you’re essentially on call.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) had to use less precise methods to estimate price changes for the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in April due to staffing shortages.

The concerns around the accuracy of U.S. inflation data follow other issues with government statistics in recent months, including the suspension of hundreds of data series and the application of incorrect sample weights to the unemployment rate survey.

What happens when the universe’s most magnetic object shines with the power of 1000 Suns in a matter of seconds? Thanks to NASA’s IXPE (Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer), a mission in collaboration with ASI (Italian Space Agency), scientists are one step closer to understanding this extreme event. Magnetars are a type of young neutron star […]

A lot can change in a year for Earth’s forests and vegetation, as springtime and rainy seasons can bring new growth, while cooling temperatures and dry weather can bring a dieback of those green colors. And now, a novel type of NASA visualization illustrates those changes in a full complement of colors as seen from […]

China is rapidly gaining an edge over the U.S. in biotechnology, particularly in drug and agricultural development. The Harvard Belfer Center identified biotech as the sector where China has the most opportunity to overtake the U.S.

U.S. biotech hubs like Cambridge and Boston are experiencing layoffs and empty labs. China's biotech industry strengths include its dominance in pharmaceutical production and manufacturing, more human talent.

@jazzilla I sent you a link to an article that tells you about multiple historical writings which confirm many persons described in biblical accounts. The closer you get to current times, the more accounts have survived. New Testament accounts have loads of corroborating evidence, and of course those texts reference the older texts as well.

"Every bible scholar will tell you things in the bible are not true"
Except for the thousands of scholars who teach it is inerrant.

Now that PewDiePie is on his Linux/engineering arc, could he help boost the Fediverse?

Pewds has been dabbling more in Linux and engineering content lately, and considering he's essentially retired and doesn’t rely on YouTube ad revenue anymore, wouldn’t it be amazing if he also started posting his videos on PeerTube in parallel?

He can definitely afford to support decentralized platforms and wouldn’t be held back by monetization concerns. With his reach, even just mirroring his content to PeerTube could bring massive attention to the Fediverse. Do you think he'd ever consider it?

Car carrier sailing from China carrying #EVs catches fire in Pacific Ocean

cnevpost.com/2025/06/05/car-ca…

Günter reshared this.

A ship filled with 3160 ChiComm made cars - including 65 EV and 600 Hybrids is burning in the pacific Ocean - fire started in the EV section.

This is the 3rd ship that caught fire because of EV battery failures.

Fire suppression system didn't stop the fire.

Even better: the ship is carrying 350 metric tons of fuel oil and 1500 metric tons of gas.

Crew has abandoned ship.

EV's are dangerous because when the battery goes - there's very little that can be done except watch the fireworks as the Lithium Ion battery goes into thermal-runaway. Not so green.

The Blue Danube Waltz sent into the stars

On 31 May, a live performance of The Blue Danube – often referred to as the ‘anthem of space’ – was transmitted by the European Space Agency (ESA) into the vastness of space. The event marked a double celebration: ESA’s 50th anniversary and the 200th birthday of the King of Waltz Johann Strauss II.
