This Linux laptop is a beast - Juno Computers Neptune 15 First Impressions

I received this beast on tuesday. It's made by a company you might not have heard of, called Juno computers. They operate ouf of London, and much like Slimbook or Tuxedo, they offer laptops based on Clevo designs, as well as desktops.

Disclaimer: I haven't received any money for this video, and I don't get to keep the laptop either, so be nice ;)

This one here is the Neptune 15. It's a 15.6'' laptop, with a full HD IPS panel, running at 144hz. It's all made out of black aluminium, and it's pretty lightweight for the power it packs: 4.4 pounds, or 2 kilos, for a 10th gen intel core i7 CPU, with 8 cores and 16 threads, an RTX 2060 with 6gb of memory, and 16gb of RAM. My test unit came with 256Gb of SSD, but you can actually configure that up: it can go up to and RTX2080 Super Max-Q, 64Gb of RAM, and 4Tb of storage.

They have multiple keyboard options, mine came with as US qwerty keyboard, but you could get a bunch of other layouts as well.

The I/O is pretty excellent. On the left side, you've got a micro SD card slot, a USB A port, a headset and a microphone jack. On the right side, you have 2 more USB A, and an ethernet port

And on the back, a minidisplay port, an HDMI port, the plug for the barrel charger, and a thunderbolt 3 port for data, not charging. It didn't seem to be recognized by GNOME though, but maybe it only activates with something plugged in.

Now that it's out of the box, and I had a few days to play around with it, here are some first impressions.

First, that panel. It's good. It doesn't go ultra bright, but it's matte, so basically no reflections whatsoever. And that 144hz refresh rate is simply amazing. I didn't think this mattered at all, but after using it for a few hours each day, going back to my 60hz displays on my desktop was a bit of a shock. It really does make a difference.
The viewing angles are fantastic as well, with no loss of color, or color shifting.

The webcam is pretty standard, at 720p, nothing special, you won't look like a potato during your video conferences, but it's nothing to write home about.

I thought maybe the power button would double as a fingerprint scanner, but it doesn't seem to be the case, but you still get a full size keyboard, with number pad, and, more importantly for some people, RGB. You can tweak the backlight to whatever color you want, and Juno Computers included a small utility in the top bar to let you tweak that.

By the way, another utility allows you to change the fan speed if you want, and switch profiles between the intel, or nvidia card, with an "nvidia on demand mode", which pairs well with GNOME's ability to open apps using the dedicated GPU.

Other than that, the Ubuntu install is a pretty much stock OEM install of 20.04, with the latest Nvidia drivers included as well.

The build quality is very nice, thanks to the aluminium, we'll have to see if the black texture doesn't scratch off too easily after a few more weeks of use. The screen hinge is pretty sturdy, and doesn't wobble much.

There is a bit of give around the keyboard when you type, and you'll definitely see it, but the keys feel good as well, good amount of travel, and satisfying, muffled sound. It lacks a bit of bounceback for my taste, but it's still pretty good. There is also some amount of flex on the back of the panel, but that's not somewhere where you'll be pressing most of the time, so it's not worrying.

Now, the windows key here, I could have done without. Building a Linux computer means selling it to Linux guys, and making the extra effort to remove that key and replace it by something else, a SUPER logo, or a Juno computers logo, or an Ubuntu logo even, would have been cool.

Now the trackpad seems excellent. It's super smooth, very precise, it really glides super well. Once I got some gestures set up in there, it's going to be a dream. Only problem: this 2 button layout. I've gotten used to a clicky trackpad, where two finger clicking does a right click, and going back to that seems a bit old school for me, but I'm sure some people will see this as an advantage.

It's a dream gaming laptop: beautiful without too much in the way of GAMER LOOKZ, apart from the RGB in the keyboard, and since the panel goes only to 1080p, the RTX2060 or up is largely enough to run at 144Hz and make sure you have a super smooth gaming experience.

Federated Services

Federated Services are services which many instances form a network to provide a greater whole than the sum of their parts, each participant in the Fediverse is an “instance”. A message or other item made available on one instance is visible and available on other instances.

We make these services available to all people who do not abuse it in order to promote the values of Free Speech, and those of the United States Constitution First Amendment. A free republic is not possible without free speech and commercial mainstream media do not provide it. We also get some advertisement benefit from hosting these, it is our hope that people who see how fast and responsible our services are will decide to do hosting or use other paid services here.

There are numerous federated services available, we offer Macrobloging platform Friendica, Hubzilla; Microbloging services Mastodon, Misskey, a federated search engine, Yacy, and a federated cloud service, Nextcloud.

Macrobloging services are message systems that allow long form posts similar in format to Facebook. These allow for works of fiction, poetry, technical papers, news items, short stories, and more. These formats are most useful for discussion of social issues.

Microbloging services allow only short form posts similar in format to Twitter. While you can link to larger articles elsewhere, you have a relatively short character limit and so can not post them directly.

Censorship, is handled much different on the fediverse than on mainstream media like Twitter or Facebook. On the fediverse, each individual instance is responsible for content available on that instance, but does not censor the rest of the network. Thus if you find the rules of one instance too constraining you can move to another.

Federated search engines are analogous to federated message systems in that each instance chooses what portion of the internet it wants to crawl. When you enter a search term, the local instance queries all of the federated instances, collates and sorts the results and presents them to you. As with messages, each instance can have it’s own censorship policies but no one instance can censor the entire network.

Given the wild-west nature of the fediverse, it is probably not suitable for children under 14, and you’re guaranteed to find some material that will offend virtually everyone. With federated search engines, material that is inappropriate will usually be flagged sensitive or nsfw (not safe for work) so as long as you don’t expand material marked as such, you can avoid this sort of material. There are occasionally people who violate these rules, we do our best to remove such individuals none the less some will get through.

Friendica.Eskimo.Com
Friendica is a decentralized long format macrobloging message network. It is similar in format to facebook however there is no centralized censorship. Also, it is able to federate with all other federated message systems which use ActivityPub protocol and also we have extensions that allow it to speak to several other networks via other protocols.

Hubzilla.Eskimo.Com
Hubzilla is similar in message format to Friendica in that it allows long posts. However, it specializes in it’s ability to provide connectivity to multiple protocols and so we include it in our mix of federated services primarily for the better connectivity it offers. Hubzilla provides a great deal of interoperability between many networks though ActivityPub is still it’s primary protocol. Hubzilla gives you a greater degree of control over privacy than some of the other networks. You can create private channels that are served between hubzilla instances and other compatible instances.

Mastodon.Eskimo.Com
Mastodon is first and foremost an alternative to Twitter. While Twitter has Tweets, Mastodon has Toots. The format is very similar. Mastodon toots have a limit of 500 characters. Similar to the short limit of Twitter. This is why this platform is referred to as a Microbloging format. Mastodon interacts with other ActivityPub instances however when a long form blog post from another instance arrives, you are only shown a short portion with a link to follow to see the full post on the originating site.

NextCloud.Eskimo.Com
If you are a customer of Eskimo North, your login credentials will work without a domain extension to access Nextcloud. If you are not a customer you can apply for a Nextcloud account using your choice of login and password, in this case the login should include your originating network. Some features require an Eskimo North shell account to take full advantage of.

Pixelfed.Eskimo.Com
Pixelfed is a federated pixel gallery. A place where you can share your photos to the widest audience possible, and you can view what others have shared. Instance is new as of April 6th, 2025.


Yacy.Eskimo.Com
Yacy is a federated search engine. There are several thousand instances on the Internet. Each instances crawls whatever portion of the web the administrator requested. It is also possible for the administrator of a site with relatively few resources to request a larger site to do crawls on their behalf. Unfortunately, it does not provide a method for an end user to initiate a crawl, but if you send e-mail to support@eskimo.com and request a crawl, we will initiate a crawl on your behalf.

Shell Accounts
A shell is a command line interface for an operating system. With most shell providers, a command line interface on one flavor of Linux or Unix is all you get. Eskimo North provides access to eight different popular Linux distributions and SunOS Unix. Eskimo North also full remote desktop capabilities using X2Go with sound, and also NX, VNC, and RPD without sound.

Account Types
We offer four different levels of shell accounts: Economy, Standard, Power, and Enterprise. Background tasks such as IRC bots, Game Servers, and the like are permitted on all account types except student. IRC servers are not permitted because of their tendency to draw denial of service attacks. Standard, Power, Enterprise, and Super-Max shells include a MySQL database allowing you to run a variety of LAMP stack based applications on your website and to use non-web based applications that require a database.

Web Hosting
Web hosting under our domain is provided with all shell accounts. You can host your own domains with virtual domains or web hosting packages.

Remote Desktop
Remote desktop capability is like having a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers plugged right into our servers. Because our servers can be accessed anywhere in the world, this allows you to have a work environment you can access from anywhere in the world without risking losing your files to a laptop, tablet, or phone thief. We offer remote desktop capabilities on all of our shell servers except for the SunOS server. We support x2go, nx, vnc, and rdp protocols. X2go is the best choice as it provides extremely efficient compression and X round trip removal as well as sound.

Applications
Applications include Office Suites such as Libre Office and Caligra (which can read and write Microsoft Office file formats), Web and Program Development tools such as Bluefish Editor as well as many other editors, compilers, interpreters, scripting languages, debuggers, profilers, and online documentation.

E-mail
Our e-mail system offers unprecedented flexibility. You can access your mail via shell mail readers including graphical mailers like Thunderbird, or via Web mail, or via pop-3 and imap mail protocols, complete with TLS encryption. Our mail system includes Bayesian filtering with Spam Assassin which can be individually configured for your needs. Procmail allows you to sort and process mail automatically. Smartlist allows you to maintain mailing lists.

Security
Access to all of our servers is available via strong encryption. The shell servers all support ssh access. All of the remote desktop protocols tunnel via ssh. We maintain all of our servers up to date keep with the latest patches. Backups are made weekly.

Since I'm gonna be nebulizing saline 2x a day for the rest of my life, I'm trying different nebulizers. This silent mini one is not recommended by bronchiectasis forums because it can't be boiled and you're supposed to boil everything to Kill It With Fire. Some also say this "mesh" style breaks when used with hypertonic saline, which clogs the mesh. But this particular model is advertised for use with saline, so I plunked down the $$$ to try it.
It's very small and cute. Has no breath activation feature so it gets saline mist everywhere; to spare my air purifiers I used it outside. Seems to work fine. Pic is of its "wash cycle," running pure distilled water. It's like a teeny cool-mist humidifier.
Running distilled water through it gets the salt out, but to really clean it you run it with hydrogen peroxide, and the soak it in same, and then soak it in distilled water again.
It will probably break in a month if used daily, but the mesh part is replaceable for $35, which is more than the cheapest mini models on Amazon cost. So, ever the intrepid product explorer, I just ordered a similar cheapo version and will test both to see which dies first. But not that often, because its, uh, front hole is a non-standard size and can't be attached to my Aerobika breath-exerciser thingy.
On the other hand it easily fits in my bike bag which makes it a game-changer for long rides. I can always have this little sucker with me, so if I start coughing from crop dust or whatever, can give my lungs a cleaning mid-trip.

@Church of Jeff That's a level of arrogance I can't even begin to comprehend, and just to make a point, being an atheist does not make you non-religious because atheism is itself a belief system and is belief that there is no God is unprovable as belief that there is a God. The only thing that differentiates an atheist from a theist is that the theist at least has some motivation to act in a moral manner, where the atheist has none, and I'm guessing for you that's the appeal to it.

oh i hear thunder i think...

got a bit of a headache when i woke up from my nap for some unknown reason. i haven't taken tylenol in many weeks which means i must be doing something right, i guess. probably from welding flux and grinding fumes this morning under the car is my guess.

i normally don't like to do flux core welding except on metal that is dirty and can't easily be cleaned, like car exhaust pipes. tig is just way nicer and cleaner but not that easy to get under a car

It's a bit diffident when you don't have big megacorp subsidies (Meta, Google, various local-market apps, etc) & have to buy all hardware from third parties. And perhaps not have planned obsolescence. And upsales. And ad revenue. And frown upon slave or unhappy workforce & other negative society impacts.

Also it looks like an ok phone, low spec cameras, but still the usual dimensions, OLED, enough RAM & CPU to be usable in desktop mode, Linux.

Google is slowly but consistently closing down the ecosystem (that should have been openv all the way through anyways).

Just like with the search engine, the early ad-free serve-everyone-equally stage is dead. Now the monopoly is about to monetise what it can & control all the things.

(Thighs might escalate a bit quicker since the "Googles android" is prob at it's peak market share rn & the China alternatives are gonna steamroll even oven giants like Google and Apple to a significant extent.)

i've said this many times, nobody crosses that border without paying the cartels money. if they do they're taking a huge risk. the democrats and deep state know this and they have a long history of working with cartels on all sorts of other nefarious activities like smuggling drugs and guns

Anyways, if anyone missed it, here it is:

Hello everybody,

this morning, Redhat employees banned me from the freedesktop.org gitlab
infrastructure - so censored all my work (not just on Xorg). They killed
my account, my git repos, my tickets in Xorg and closed all my merge
requests. And then making fun on social media about it.

They fired the shot that's heared around the world.

So much for freedesktop.org being "independent" and embracing freedom.
Perhaps we should nominate them for the next Orwell award.

It's now clear that freedesktop.org is the Redskirts, and they want
to kill X. By the way, the same corporation that tied to proprietarize a
lot of FOSS code, including the Linux kernel (and I've been one of those
who warned them about terminating our license grants them).

My most evil heresies probably were:

a) forking Xorg and making actual progress
b) talking to a journalist whose name must not be spoken in many other
Redhat/IBM tax evasion outlets, like GNOME (they're also banning
honorable long time contributors for just mentioning that name)
c) inviting anybody to join me, without discrimination

I don't know why, but it really looks they're quite scared by one guy
that's just trying to actually bring X11 forward. Hard to find he right
words for telling how honored I'm about that.

This didn't actually surprise me, I knew this would be coming for about
a year now. Just didn't expect them to do such an extremely irrational
and dumb move. Now I'm taking great pleasure seeing the Streisand effect
kicking in (my inbox is exploding). Thanks for that great publicity.

It's not the first time this happens in FOSS world, and it's not the
first time it's happening in X: remember what Xfree86 board did to
the honorable Keith Packard, back about two decades ago - what lead to
the birth of Xorg and the death of Xfree86. Same is happening again.

History repeats itself.

And now the Redskirts placed me onto the same stage as the great
honorable Keith Packard. WOOOOW.

Just to be clear, I didn't want to fork, I tried my best to work
together with the Xorg team. But I knew for long time, this day would
come. Xorg has been captured by Redhat, in order to get rid of destroy
competition. The necessary consequence is a fork, more competition.
