It's pretty chill here. I live in a big city and there's very little crime by American standards. The cops don't let bums cause trouble. The cartels don't bother you if you don't bother them, so long as you don't live in some shithole village in the middle of nowhere. (You wouldn't live on the south side of Chicago either...)
Mostly people go to work, go to the market and drink caguamas (40's) with their friends. Everyone everywhere in all of history always thinks the economy is bad and prices are high, but things are going ok here. There are "help wanted" signs all over the place, and they list livable wages. Housing is cheap, if not luxurious, but better to live in a crappy house and have beer money than live in a fancy house and work 60 hours a week to keep above water. There are tons of laws, but nobody really cares, even the government enforcers, so in practice there is a lot more freedom than in the US; lots of normal people run a small business of some sort, and profitably, and without debt.
The most striking thing coming from the US is that the people are warm and nice and the streets and shopping districts aren't dead. You can just go hang out at the market or even at the taco stand on the corner and chat with people, for hours. I've even had strangers give me free beer while hanging out listening to live street music in the middle of the night on like a Tuesday.
I grew up in southern California and can remember the border towns being like this. Even all the way down to Ensenada and Hussong's Bar.
It is good to get a local perspective. My experience here in the states since the lockdowns has been, it is no where near as dire as what I saw posted on social media.
