Solve the alignment problem, meaning that we can robustly guarantee that we get AI systems to learn and act towards what we collectively really want over the long-term
we can do this by human-focused efforts paired with the mild charm of AI. It is a wonder, for sure, but that needs to be tempered by a holistic appreciation of the world. Otherwise our constant indecency will have no basis for AI alignment: we are the change we want to see in the world, for good or ill.
Then focus on making superintelligence cheap, widely available, and not too concentrated with any person, company, or country. Society is resilient, creative, and adapts quickly. If we can harness the collective will and wisdom of people, then although we’ll make plenty of mistakes and some things will go really wrong, we will learn and adapt quickly and be able to use this technology to get maximum upside and minimal downside.
we definitely need to get away from "harnessing people's {anything}" language, but this is essentially what I believe too. It's a shame that the ruling class still subscribes to the hegemonic idea of cultural influence: true influence comes from promoting the best, at the cost determined by authentic evaluation, otherwise values like selflessness will remain ever in doubt. @EdBoatConnoisseur to think that I lived through two changes in the Linux display server. I remember back when they were replacing XFree86 with Xorg, everyone hated Xorg too. Including me, because there was a lot of shit I had that didn't work correctly with Xorg and it was pretty frustrating to use, and everything became unbearable when every distro stopped shipping XFree86.
And again, I don't follow tranny dev drama, but it seems a lot of projects are moving to Wayland right now and starting to ditch Xorg.

x11 will probably live on for decades if not by itself than in xwayland (also forks).
@Spooke @EdBoatConnoisseur oh, absolutely le corpos want to murder it. Again, I have seen this dance already, 20 years ago. Of course, my memory is a bit fuzzy, so Xorg may have had a bit more community support back then (after all, both were still X11 implementations, and IIRC Xfree may have had some licensing issues). But still, in a relatively short amount of time, one project was effectively killed in favor of the other.

The recent "pride month apocalypse" has shown that corpos in general are moving away from faggotry and trannies because it kinda stopped being fashionable to pander to them. But Free Software projects, be they corpos or community projects, are run differently and usually have some shit about "culture over profits", so they are very likely to become the last bastion of all the freaks who are being pushed away from normal corpos.
