i switched mobile carriers and the new one has a voice AI assistant. the voice AI was actually better than the human pajeet i talked to. the jeet was completely bullshitting me and just talking out their ass, had no idea how to configure the access point manually for their mobile service and just basically pretended to do some technical bull crap on their end, put me on hold a few times, then didn't solve my problem

the AI at least got me pointed in the right direction, even though it gave me bad info.

eventually i figured it out from their web docs.

i kept my last phone until i was absolutely forced to buy a new one due to obsolete radio frequencies that nobody supported anymore. the phone itself was still working fine, just network changes made it obsolete. kind of unfortunate. i like my current phone too and don't want to be forced to buy a new enshittified one with no headphone jack

I feel like we have to be able to separate artists' bad behavior from our evaluation of the quality of their work.

Maybe there's a time limit? Maybe they have to be dead so they can't benefit from their work being sold.

Are there any non problematic artists/creators from 500 years ago who we nevertheless find their work product valuable to society today? What about science? Especially medicine with all the body snatching.

Neil Gaiman is almost certainly a sex pest based on all the women reporting. So I get not wanting to give him money. He hopefully gets it, too.

I like the suggestion of piracy as an approach...

I genuinely do not understand people who have deep fried opinions about Signal needing a goddamn phone number in 2025.

Many privacy nerds were outraged when you needed to give out a phone number to other people in order to talk with them. I was one of those nerds. They fixed that with the usernames rollout.

As a mobile phone app, Signal uses your phone number to bootstrap your enrollment into the protocol. This is literally the path of least resistance as an SMS replacement app, for most users.

If you want to know whether Signal can obtain enough metadata to target users that have enrolled, the answer is complicated.

The way profiles are encrypted, and how sealed sender works, makes any targeting seem infeasible. (Your profile key rotates, at mininum, when you block someone.)

Signal currently does not have IP addresses, etc. stored. If this changes in the future, it will not be retroactive. If you're worried about that, Molly boasts Tor support. Maybe that's fine. I haven't audited Molly, and won't.

On a whim, thought I'd try upgrading my #WSL #Ubuntu instance to a later release in hopes that updating from #Python 3.2 would make #Marimo actually work. do-release-upgrade actually worked pretty seamlessly, and then the new bullshit Canonical decided was a good idea reared its head. pip3 install marimo? "THIS IS AN EXTERNALLY MANAGED PYTHON, install things through packages instead!" (there is no package).

My brother is currently in a state prison that specializes the the severely mentally ill. His sentence is up next month and he will be released.
They have been trying to get him into a supervised living place for weeks but they have so far not been able to.
He's 1600ish miles from me. I'm going to fly there and pick him up. Right now, he can't leave the state.
i could rent him an apartment but if he stops his meds he gets violent.
We need more places for people like this.

I've had at least 2 coworkers that kept their family member at home.
One was her mother and she only had help when she worked (night shift-12 hrs). About did her in.
Another guy was early 60's, married another coworker. She's developed very early Alz in her late 50's. He quit, sold his house, downsized and took care of her until hospice. Had friends relieve him, but too far away for me when I had little kids.
Almost have put a chip on them.

It’s awful. So far we are just getting started. But she was diagnosed at 67 (now she’s 70). Had trouble before then, but my sister wanted her in a home. I guess she just couldn’t do it. I’m not saying it’s easy, but I feel abandoning her in a home now just isn’t right. Though there will be a time for it. I don’t think I can do all the medical stuff and I don’t believe I have it in me to do diapers. I have limits… I think!

Acting head of civil rights agency defends decisions undercutting transgender workers

The acting chair of the federal agency that enforces workers rights acknowledged Wednesday that transgender workers are protected under civil rights laws but defended her decision to drop lawsuits on their behalf, saying her agency is not independent and must comply with President Donald Trump’s orders.

Andrea Lucas, who was first appointed to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in 2020 and elevated to chair in January, spoke at her confirmation hearing at the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. Her nomination to serve another five-year term as an EEOC commissioner requires Senate confirmation, though whether she stays on as chair will be up to Trump.

Republican senators praised her leadership, especially her commitment to rolling back Biden-era regulations and guidance on gender-identity rights, which Lucas has argued overstepped the EEOC’s authority.
