Israel is again threatening to nuke the western world if we don't help them to destroy Iran.

If it comes down to it though. Would it really be so bad? I mean if we keep going along with this, "what will the end be? Enslavement of our people, annexation of our land" to quote Adolf Hitler.

I would honestly rather take my chances with a nuclear world war, if it would mean the total destruction of Israel. I say it would be a worth it.

Crowdsourcing recommendations: office chairs that don't break the bank and are *actually comfortable* (and by this I mean very well padded and "soft" feeling - if I could work from a car seat, I would, to frame this whole discussion).

Absolute #1 priority above literally anything else is that the seat, where my butt goes, is non-mesh, well-cushioned, feels comfy, and is durable. If it flattens out in a month and I'm back to sitting on the plywood under the foam, it's useless! (most non-mesh office chairs I've used sadly turn out like this in about a month, but I also dislike mesh's feel on the skin soooooo). Second priority, related to this, is no hard plastic (or wood, or metal, or whatever) digging into me in high-touch places (which, itself, rules out most mesh chairs anyway, I find, they all go ham on hard plastic).

Definitely prefer high-back chairs with no mesh anywhere (I believe this is called "executive chair"?), head/neck rests are generally speaking preferred but not strictly required. Rolling ability optional but useful. Rocking ability optional but nice?

at the start of the pandemic, when I realized I'd be Working At Home a lot, I bought a refurb Steelcase Leap V2 from them. I think you'd be happier with the Gesture, but they have lots of options.

I got mine with the heavy-duty gas strut and the rollerblade wheels.

Did I mention the twelve-year warranty?

I wish I had got the headrest option, but that's not their fault. Super happy with this purchase.

[follow up] Israel expands military censorship to foreign media and social networks with new emergency order

Israeli Chief Military Censor issued an emergency order requiring all media outlets - Israeli and foreign - plus social media operators to seek prior approval before publishing missile impact locations. The order targets coverage of Iranian strikes and extends censorship rules to international networks and social platforms.

Police have already shut down broadcasts by #AP and #Reuters, claiming their footage was used by Al Jazeera. Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi said the order resulted from collaboration with National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir to "close holes" in coverage by foreign networks.

Legal experts question the order's enforceability, particularly for social media users and foreign outlets. Israel's military censorship reached record levels in 2024, with over 8,000 articles banned or partially censored - more than double previous peaks.

The Government Press Office initially issued a misleading statement suggesting much broader censorship powers than the order actually contains, later calling this an error.

[cont'd] Iran fires 23 missiles at Israel, 30 injured in Haifa direct hit

While Israeli media is reporting how successful Israel's air forces were at neutralizing launch sites, launch operators, and scientists, #Iran launched 23 missiles targeting areas across #Israel from north to south.

A direct hit in #Haifa injured 30 people, including a 16-year-old critically wounded by shrapnel and two others moderately injured. The strike damaged high-rise buildings, offices, and shops after hitting a parking garage.

In southern areas, interceptor debris caused significant damage to two houses but no casualties. Officials noted most injuries occurred among people not in protected spaces during alerts.

Wrzucić wuchtę regionalizmów i brzmieć jak Blubry Starego Marycha nie jest bardzo trudno - ale ćpnąć właściwe słowa w odpowiednich momentach by zabrzmieć jak współczesny poznaniak trzeba już z głową. Częścią tych słów nadal niechcący zadziwiam ludzi, a części kompletnie nie rozumiem, choć nie wątpię, że w gwarze istnieją i były w użyciu.

Verified apps are an implicit guarantee that this thing is as the developer intended. What app verification isn't, is a guarantee that the package you're downloading is safe, or has no security problems.

If the repo has been hacked, if one of the maintainers for the app is malicious, then the official package will also contain that code.

The security argument will often be used to push people towards distro packages instead of flatpaks and snaps, but this is also not really how things work.

The general view of distro packages is that they can be safer, because there's a trusted maintainer that will create the package, and thus can detect any unwanted change, backdoor, or problem, and prevent you from getting the infected or buggy version of the package.
This is not really the case though.

Log4J, the recent SSH vulnerability, the XZ backdoor, and basically every CVE ever discovered points to the fact that maintainers DO NOT do security reviews on most packages they build. That's not what is expected of them either. A lot of maintainers aren't developers and couldn't conduct these audits in the first place.

Another big misconception is around the sandbox for Flatpaks and snaps. A sandbox basically just means that the app you're running has a system of permissions that limits what the app can do, and how it can interact with the system. It CAN be more secure than not having a sandbox, but it doesn't mean it IS always more secure.

Another example of the sandbox not doing anything to protect the user is with the recent scam crypto apps on the snap store: these WERE sandboxed, because they scammed you through a web view, a website basically.

Another common misconception around packages is how dependencies work. You'll often read that distro packages use the system dependencies, and thus use less disk space, and are more secure, because you know that the library the app relies upon is updated by your distro, compared to a flatpak, snap or AppImage, where the dev might have bundled a dependency on their own, and never bothered to update it.

First, you CAN check which versions of dependencies the package comes with. A flatpak is open, you can see how it's built. Second, distro packages aren't always up to date either: just because it's a shared library doesn't mean it has all the latest security fixes.

This example will be clearer: MariaDB got a security update in 2021 in November. While Arch and Artix updated things the same day, Debian took 3 months to apply it, and Alpine took 4. Same goes for fixed linux kernel versions: when your distro is locked to a specific kernel version, it's been factually proven that this version becomes more and more buggy and vulnerable over time, as maintainers simply don't apply every fix, and don't backport everything. For example, the current RHEL 8.8 kernel had more then 4500 bugs open that have fixes in later kernel releases.
