The stablecoin time bomb hidden in Trump’s GENIUS act - UnHerd

#geopolitics #imperialism #dollar

Today, the dollar value of circulating stablecoins is around $250 billion. For that sum to be backed with sufficient reserves, it is estimated that last year issuers purchased $40 billion of US Treasury bills, more than any foreign buyer of Treasuries during 2024. In the same year, the stablecoin issuer Tether alone reported annual pre-tax profits of $13 billion — not bad for an offshore company employing around 100 people.

Hum, isn't this a ploy to keep the dollar afloat against the US' own sanctions ?

I think anyone conforming to a strict rigid archetype of manliness is going to wonder secretly about the other world.

I'm not sure if it makes them eggs. I think once they stop caring about it, the stress of their place in the world will wash away, and they can just be themselves (average dude with some girly interests) and actually relax into their masculinity instead of reaching always for an impossible archetype

Millor no preguntar-nos-ho.

εpsilon: Sophie Adenot’s first mission name and patch unveiled

image

Image:

ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot’s first mission to the International Space Station now has a name: εpsilon. The mission name and patch were announced today at the Paris Air Show by ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Sophie Adenot, who joined remotely from the United States, where she is training for her spaceflight.

Sophie Adenot is one of the five astronauts selected from ESA’s most recent astronaut class of 2022. Following the successful completion of their basic training in spring 2024, Josef Aschbacher announced during the Space Council in Brussels that Sophie and fellow graduate Raphaël Liégois had been assigned their first missions to the International Space Station, currently planned for 2026.

The εpsilon name and patch reflect the power of small, yet impactful contributions and how multiple parts unite to create a whole.

In mathematics, “ε” represents something small. In the extensive collaborative effort of space exploration, involving thousands of participants, all roles, including the astronaut's role, stay small yet meaningful.

The hummingbird, central to the patch, embodies this idea; though one of Earth’s smallest birds, it plays a crucial role in the jungle’s ecosystem, pollinating numerous plants.

Encircling the patch is a ring of small dots, symbolising the many small contributions that together make great achievements possible. All these little actions that can be coordinated to form a circle and close the loop. At the top, three of these dots are coloured – blue, white, and red – representing Sophie’s home country, France, and ESA’s exploration destinations: Earth, the Moon, and Mars.

The name εpsilon, being the fifth Greek letter and the fifth brightest star of the Leo constellation, also follows the French tradition to name human spaceflight missions after celestial bodies. It also pays tribute to the five career astronauts of ESA’s 2022 class.

Three lines emerge from the “i” of the εpsilon, shaping the tail of a shooting star, a poetic reminder that dreams keep us alive.

At the base of the patch lies a rounded blue shape, representing Earth’s surface and its natural beauty: mountains, forests and landscapes that Sophie enjoys exploring. It serves as a reminder of our motivation for spaceflight: to explore, learn, and return with this knowledge to benefit life on Earth.

From an emotional perspective, the same message is conveyed. In life's intricate tapestry, small threads contribute to create the most beautiful patterns. A kind word, a gentle smile, a moment of patience - these seemingly insignificant actions can transform lives and shape destinies. This patch invites each of us to embrace the potential of our smallest actions as they ripple outward, touching hearts and inspiring souls.

During her εpsilon mission, Sophie will perform numerous scientific experiments, many of them European, conduct medical research, support Earth observation and contribute to operations and maintenance aboard the International Space Station.

President of France Emmanuel Macron visits the Paris Space Hub

image

Image:

Marking the first public day of this year’s International Paris Air Show, the President of France Emmanuel Macron visited the Paris Space Hub.

ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher and Director of Human and Robotic Exploration Daniel Neuenschwander welcomed President Macron, introducing him to the assembled French astronauts and a group of young space professionals in attendance.

French ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot joined by video link from the United States, where she is training for her upcoming mission to the International Space Station. Sophie detailed some of her training, explaining that no two days are alike. Fellow astronauts Thomas Pesquet, Jean-François Clervoy and Claudie Haignéré also addressed Sophie and offered their advice for her time in space. Together President Macron and Sophie announced that her mission will be named εpsilon, and revealed her mission patch.

Speaking about the development of the space industry, President Macron said Europe must increase investment in commercial space, and emphasised the importance of complementarity of public and private investment – particularly with the upcoming ESA Council at Ministerial level and ongoing discussions for the next EU multiannual financial framework. He also mentioned the developing need for dual-use space capacity including surveillance. President Macron highlighted the importance of research and of making Europe a destination for researchers in line with the EU Choose Europe for Science initiative. He also called on Europe to improve its competitiveness in space. Watch a replay of the visit.

A new Letter of Intent between the European Space Agency and Dassault Aviation was also announced, signalling the common interest of the organisations in working on low Earth orbit exploration, in particular orbital vehicles.

The Weaponization of Victimhood: Be Careful What You Wish For

#history #geopolitics #imperialism #war

Japan, seeing how strongly this “Asians defeating the West” narrative resonated in Asia, made it their main propaganda arc: they decided to frame their own imperialism and colonialism as a fight for justice, positioning themselves not as conquerors but as liberators freeing their Asian brothers from the yoke of white supremacy and coining slogans like “Asia for Asians” and the “Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere.”

In the end, Lagarde’s proposal is less about global strategy and more about justifying greater EU centralisation. But what Europe needs is not “more Europe” — it’s a different Europe altogether.

Two surprise #snakes I saw this week.

The first guy, a big black snake, I almost stepped on while I was #trailrunning and way too focused on my podcast. We watched each other for a while until he went into the plant cover beside the trail.

The second little guy, a smooth green snake, slithered down the fallen tree and hung out with me and my friends while we were hanging out in the woods. We named him Clyde and watched him come in and out of holes in the bricks around the area.

The Tennessee Funeral Directors Association has publicly acknowledged the existence of white fibrous clots in corpses, with 64% of embalmers and funeral directors attending its Convention reporting sightings of the clots in the first half of 2025. The clots were found in an average of 17% of all corpses.

In addition to the white rubbery clots caused by the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, 70% of respondents reported signs of micro-clotting, and 39% observed an increase in infant deaths in 2025.

Former USAF Major Tom Haviland joined Nicholas Hulscher on the Focal Points podcast to discuss the first state-level acknowledgement of the white fibrous clots at a meeting of the Tennessee Funeral Directors Association.

#US / Thomas Friedman: self-serving meets redundant

There are so many silly things in Thomas Friedman’s column it’s difficult to choose a highlight. Maybe one indication he’s delusional in an old-fashioned colonial way would be this particular advice he dispenses to the #Trump administration, right after suggesting gifting Israel with even more bombs, now adding B-2s: “Recognize Palestinian right to self-determination while requiring them to develop credible, corruption-free leadership.” Thomas Friedman, clearly a genius, is asking the most corrupt regime in U.S. history to demand corruption-free leadership from the Palestinians.

Disregarding the colonial arrogance (the Palestinians’ right to self-determination is not dependent on Trump’s goodwill), but what about looking in the mirror first? When Friedman indulges in ideas like “coercive diplomacy,” he basically admits he’s an imperialist, or rather an imperialist wannabe. It’s a euphemism for imperialism, not a philosophy and not diplomacy. It’s the opposite of diplomacy, in fact. He says the U.S. has the right to dictate terms to sovereign nations, that American interests should drive regional solutions, and that military threats are legitimate diplomatic tools when used by the dominant power.

But the cherry on top is this:

[…] “But the Israeli Jews have no Belgium. They are as indigenous to their biblical homeland as the Palestinians, no matter what ‘anticolonial’ nonsense they teach at elite universities. Therefore, you will never out-crazy the Israeli Jews. If push comes to shove, they will out-crazy you.”

Never mind Friedman’s evangelical orientalism mixed with a familiar populist tone—I believe he was always an opportunistic coward—but maybe someone should remind him that Romania (where his grandfather was born) was never part of Palestine. Most of the Russian Jews who started exploring colonization in Palestine in the second half of the 19th century barely survived the first year, and most ran back home. So much for indigeneity, I guess.

But honestly, when I see him gushing over ideas Dennis Ross came up with, I’m thinking maybe it’s time the White House should hire fewer Jewish “special advisers,” negotiators, and envoys to the Middle East and add a couple of Palestinians to the mix? It’s becoming absurd.

Actually, I’m not sure why he’s using #Belgium and the #Congo as his reference point. Why not stick with #Britain? After all, they eventually left Palestine too. They also refused to implement the partition plan—or any plan, for that matter—that wasn’t acceptable to both communities: the Arab majority and the Jewish minority, which consisted mostly of non-indigenous people who had arrived in Palestine illegally.
