Years ago, only mere decades, people used cash so most of the transactions weren’t noted. We didn’t have smart tv’s or meters, no tracking devices on cars, no CCTV, no mobile phones. On the face of it, introducing all those things appeared to make life easier. For you to monitor yourself and use those things to save time and hassle.

But the purpose has switched. All of that now traps us, monitors us, and will ultimately it seems, be used against us. Everything moving online, including medical appointments is the worst thing we could have done. With that they know how to get to you, and collectively they can manipulate things. Knowledge is power as they say.

They also do not appear to be making a secret of a social credit score scheme rolling out, similar to another country recently mentioned in the media a lot.

But let’s be honest, we have a class system in this country going back centuries which used to be your social credit score, then we introduced credit cards and a credit rating. Sounds like a credit system to me. And we blithely accepted that one without question.

The roll out of fitbit and apple watches to monitor your heartbeat and vitals. Exercise bikes in the home fitted up to a central system that knows you are exercising. Smart fridges that can be controlled by something somewhere. Points and incentives already for shopping where they encourage you to.

Sounds like a credit system and monitoring to me, but we invited it, signed up to it and didn’t notice when they changed the rules.
They are already talking of ‘incentives’ to make you lose weight and live healthier by their standards.

In my mind, to monitor someone on that, you have to have them log in every morning, noon and night, fill in what they eat, they drink and what they do in a day. Sounds a bit intrusive doesn’t it. They have proved they don’t trust the public one bit to make their own decisions or run their own lives.

So, picture it. You wake up, sign into your app, do your exercise, eat what they say, you get your points for the day or approval rating for your transaction. Then the next day the same, but after a week or so they decide they need to know more information. They suspect you are eating things while you are out and not reporting them, so they install a urine monitor.

Every morning, noon and night, you now have to give them a sample, to prove that you are complying. They lock your fridge once you have gone over your allotted calorie intake for the day. They restrict your card so you can’t buy food while out. They insist it is to keep you healthy, but you end up hungry, stressed, sneaking around and unhappy.

It’s a slippery slope and one we are already on and picking up speed at an alarming pace. When they start interfering in where you can go, who you can see and what you can say should have been the first warning. It will be followed by what you can wear, what you can eat, how much you can weight.

Just imagine the worst, most vindictive, controlling, hateful and unreasonable parent in the world, calling all the shots in your life, for the rest of your life. Making the most outrageous demands, stopping you doing things you enjoy just because they like depriving you of things. No-one should have more right over your body than you. Full stop.

Take a good long hard look around. Really see these systems for what they are, understand what they intend to do with them, and how that will change things going forward.

If you can work your way through all the smokescreens, lies and diversions, it is there in plain sight. And it isn’t pretty…

another British poodle wouldn't it be nice if he used his legal mind and explained the legal basis for a) Israeli attacks on hospitals, journalists, starving people in queues for aid etc
b) The rationale behind sending weapons to Israel
c) what REAL Intel there is on Iranian nukes. (So far no increase in radiation levels following Taco's strike)
d) Why do the Brits kowtow to Taco when there are better trade and security partners close to hand.

The old question of "what happens when Linus/other senior kernel dev dies" mattered far more like 20+ years ago than it does now. The kernel developers are organized quite well, Linux is in general an extremely well-organized open source project these days, and there are several who could fill in. Linus' "2nd" is Greg Kroah-Hartman, who is the lead maintainer of the stable kernel branch (i.e. the one most are using). Linus is the lead maintainer of the in-development branch.

But of course we hope that Linus continues doing this for a long time. Most people never create even one world-changing technology, Linus casually created two (Linux + Git).

Looks like the same poorly implemented Android CT library that broke a lot of apps a couple years ago... did it again 🤦‍♂️

github.com/appmattus/certifica…

in reply to Juli Jane

@julijane it’s not so black and white. If you are an unpaid maintainer you have no obligation to put in extra work, for sure. But if you do take down the banking system of a country once (still not your fault!) and people tell you your library is broken… I think you start having a responsibility to either deprecate it, fix it, or at least warn users. We live in a society.
in reply to Filippo Valsorda

Amongst other things, there's an open source software supply chain story here.

This Android library with 174 stars and one maintainer has taken down Monday.com, Eventbrite (!!!), UPS, Kraken, Lowe's, YBS, IKEA, Agibank, iFood, PagBank, pago.ro, and Udemy.

Again, this is the same failure mode that caused outages in 2023.

21 thoughts on Trump's war with Iran - by Matthew Yglesias

The problem with making a deal with Iran that offers Iran upside is it lets them improve their economy and thus pour more resources into various non-nuclear undertakings. This is especially a problem from Israel’s perspective, since they are the targets of many of these undertakings.

But the problem with not offering Iran upside is that if Iran doesn’t get upside in a deal, then there’s no deal. You end up with either a nuclear Iran or a war.

Now, maybe the war will end up being a “splendid little war” conducted by air with no American casualties and minimal impacts on Israel. Maybe Iran caves and signs a humiliating deal. This definitely might happen, and I wouldn’t trust anyone who professes to be certain it will turn into a fiasco.

That said, as Robert Pape wrote a few days ago, the practical track record of countries achieving major strategic goals through air power alone is pretty thin. Ever since aerial bombardment was invented, there’s been a desire to believe wars can be won by securing air superiority and dropping bombs, but it rarely works.

It’s going to be hard to know how much damage has actually been done to Iran’s underground nuclear facilities.

The treatment received by North Korea over the past 25 years — in contrast to Iraq, Libya, Iran, and, in a different way, Ukraine — is a strong argument for countries to sprint to nuclear weapons development and then figure things out from there. The “Iran surrenders” scenario is definitely on the table, but “Iran genuinely goes for a nuclear weapon” seems like a more likely scenario.

Hoy es un buen día para recordar y para el que no lo conozca a Mordechai Vanunu.

Earlier, #IRGC-linked sources promised a "crushing blow" as an immediate response to possible US bombings.

In this regard, the #Houthis have already announced that they will denounce all agreements reached with #Washington and will attack US ships.

Like him or not, worth listening to Scott Ritter instead of Trump's BS

So the US bombed three empty facilities, two of which already bombed by Israel with negligible results. Fordow intact apart from one entry and one exit. Nuclear material already moved elsewhere.
CentCom apparently not involved. None of the attack came from the regional bases, understandably.

Where Is The Beef? Indeed.

"Which Path to Persia?" (2009) by the Brookings Institution, outlines the US foreign policy vis a vis Iran:

brookings.edu/wp-content/uploa…

Transpires that Israel is a conduit for US's imperialistic, hegemonic foreign policy.

Many things have changed since this policy papers were published. What hasn't changed is the US/Israeli aggression in the Middle East. US foreign policy is bipartisan, no change regardless of who sits in the White House

Again, it's not Israel initiating war to Iran. US and Israel operate in lockstep in the Middle East. As this 2009 thinktank policy paper shows, the plan to regime change Iran has been long in the making
Page 12 is a good summary if you don't have time to read it all.

I'm adding the list of the Brookings thinktank sponsor in a reply to this post ... all the usual suspects
